Iron Maiden has earned their spot as one of the biggest touring acts of the new millenium through an unwavering work ethic and delivering quality in every way to their legion of dedicated fans. As they prepare to come to North and South American to wrap up their Run For Your Lives Tour, they released a career spanning documentary, Burning Ambition, for a limited theater run before the inevitable release on DVD/streaming. As the boys have reviewed most of Maiden's 80's output and a few live reviews on their favorite heavy metal band, you knew they were going to check this out and tell you what they thought. But Maiden have offered up many documentaries over the decades (12 Wasted Years, The Early Years Part 1, 2, 3 and Flight 666) so they were curious as to how this one would be different and how many new tidbits they'd be able to glean from this one-night doc. The movie spans their whole career starting in 1975 and talks about the vision and work ethic of one Steve Harris, the founder and leader of Maiden since its inception. Because of the huge amount of time to cover, the film didn't dive deep into the making of albums, chart success or tours but gave everyone a voice (off-screen) using footage from the 50 years of the band's career. The hardcore fans may not have learned too much but to hear the stories of famous fans like Brian Slagel (a guest of UAWIL), Javier Bardem and Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine was a nice touch. Plus, they included past members, crew members and fans from around the world sharing their stories of why they are so loyal to Iron Maiden. For the most part, they highlighted how bringing new members into the band change the music for the better (and sometimes worse), how that affected their popularity and draw as a life act and how (and why) they're still going today. They hit the highest of highs in the 1980s but burned themselves out in the process. Thanks to grunge and significant lineup changes in the 90s, they went backwards a bit, especially in America where they sometimes found themselves playing to 500 people. But the reunification with Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith on Brave New World and beyond propelled them back to the top - a place they haven't left in 25 years. And of course, there's lots of Eddie in his many incarnations - perhaps the greatest marketing image in the history of heavy metal or even recorded music. While the hardcore fans may lament a lack of details or stories about the albums, it's a cool journey to see where they came from, how they rose to the top, fell down near the bottom and rose again to be the biggest (and in our opinion best) heavy metal band in the world. Filmmaker Dave Markey discusses his documentary "The Secret Lives of Bill Bartell", the punk scene's most fascinating, mysterious, and surprisingly influential behind-the-scenes figure. Stream it now | Order the Blu-Ray Topics Include: Dave Markey has a large record collection but stopped buying recently. Vinyl prices have skyrocketed — once cheap records now cost thousands. Dave bought records directly from band members at punk shows. Ian MacKaye sold Dave a first press Minor Threat 7". Dave bought Minutemen and Descendents EPs from D-Boon for a dollar. Dave made the Bill Bartell documentary for people who don't know him. Bill Bartell was unknowable — different things to different people. Dave tried making this film in the 90s; Bill refused to cooperate. The film was made ten years after Bill passed away. Bill Bartell faked backstage passes to get into arena rock shows. Bill named the Iron Maiden live EP Maiden Japan. Bill gave Steve Harris his outfit, worn in the "Run to the Hills" video. Bill saw no distinction between the Scorpions, the Germs, and the Beatles. Bill would tell artists exactly what he thought — no filter whatsoever. Bill told Steve Perry he was responsible for the worst night of his life. Bill told Beck "I don't like you" upon their very first meeting. Bill tried out as guitarist for Public Image Ltd in 1981. Kiss circulated photos of Bill to security: do not let him in. Bill befriended Sean Lennon, which led to a friendship with Yoko Ono. Bill's 1988 Beatlefest noise performance nearly caused a riot. Bill talked Kiss manager Bill Aucoin into discovering Generation X. That connection indirectly launched Billy Idol's massive solo career. Billy Idol himself didn't know Bill Bartell's role until recently. Bill gave Kurt Cobain Os Mutantes tapes, reviving the band's career. Pat Smear and Drew Barrymore were sought for the film but unavailable. Dave's band Painted Willie did Black Flag's final tour in 1986. Dave preferred Painted Willie's early Spinhead Records releases over SST output. The Bill Bartell documentary and Love Dolls films are now on Criterion Channel. Bill Bartell's Flying V guitar now hangs in the Punk Rock Museum, Las Vegas. Bill's money, connections, and secrets largely died with him — still a mystery. Interview by Kris PetersHillbilly Vegas' dynamic sound caught the ears of an independent label in Nashville in 2011, and their first album Ringo Manor was released and sold more than 10,000 copies – driven by the hit single Little Miss Rough and Tumble.The band has gone onto chart five songs on Billboard's Rock charts, including Let It Ride – which remained on the chart for 13 weeks and reached #10, Feels Good, High Time For A Good Time, Hell To Pay, Two GunTown, and fan favorite Shake It Like A Hillbilly. The band has earned a reputation for rousing live shows-bringing a loud, party-like atmosphere that is all-inclusive.They've shown they have a broad appeal across different genres, pleasing crowds while performing shows with rockers Blackberry Smoke, The Kentucky Headhunters, Wolfsbane and Ted Nugent; along with country icons Alabama, Travis Tritt, Blake Shelton, and Wynonna Judd. I do a lot of observational stuff, and people I know are just things I've seen, and there's a lot of things on there. Talk about a high bar to live up to for rock n roll live production!?! Who would he find that can deliver such a live performance? The answer is Iron Maiden, the heavy metal pioneers that Brian has witnessed live over 300x, who incorporate all kinds of props, blistering playing, lights, pyro and even an enormous mascot, Eddie. Brian takes us back to 1981 as Maiden were opening for Judas Priest. Brian tells us how he sold the album Killers in his record store to help promote the band he loved and sought out every album and single from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal he could get his hands on. So he jumped on a plane to Houston to see his favorite band. Hear how Brian was thwarted by Texas cops as he attempted to headbang, how his buddy gave him a ride to interview Steve Harris at the hotel after the show and the power of Maiden during the early years. Brian also talks about how Paul Di'Anno dropped a bomb on him ahead of a show in Long Beach as he interviewed him for his fanzine, The New Heavy Metal Revue. He brings more than 28 years of federal service, including positions at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Defense (DoD), along with extensive expertise in interagency collaboration, public-private partnerships, international policy, and acquisition. Before joining PSC, Harris was a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES) and served as the Deputy Executive Assistant Director for Infrastructure Security at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). In this capacity, he led CISA's efforts to secure the nation's critical infrastructure in partnership with government and private-sector stakeholders. He also held several other senior roles at CISA and its predecessor organization, including Acting Executive Assistant Director for Infrastructure Security, Acting Deputy Director for CISA, Acting Assistant Secretary for the National Protection and Programs Directorate's (NPPD) Office of Infrastructure Protection, and Deputy Director of NPPD's Office of Cyber and Infrastructure Analysis. Earlier in his career, Harris held various positions within the Department of Defense. He served as Deputy for Policy at the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, where he developed and implemented international policy for Foreign Military Sales and security cooperation programs. He also held contracting and acquisition roles at the Naval Air Systems Command and the Navy International Programs Office. Harris has received numerous awards for his public service, including the Presidential Rank Award – Meritorious Executive, the DHS Secretary's Silver Medal for Meritorious Service, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service. He holds a Master of Science in Management/Contract Management from the Florida Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary's College of Maryland. Our guest this week is Steve Harris of Lanesboro, MN a free-lance writer, widower, author and father of two sons with disabilities. Part 2. Steve and his wife, Susan, have married for 17 years. Steve and his first wife, Pam, were together for 30 years, before she passed away in 2012 due to a rare neurological disorder. Steve and Pam had two boys: Matthew who was born in 1980 with Spina bifida and younger son, Andrew, who is 37 and who has Cerebral Palsy. Both boys would eventually be diagnosed with PMD or Pelizaeus Merzbacher Disease, a rare neurological disease, where there is a lack of myelin covering the nerves.Very sadly, Matthew passed away in October 2020 four days short of his 40th birthday. Steve's career included being a pastor, a middle school teacher and for 20 years, director of communications at Twin Cities YMCA . When Iron Maiden announced they'd be doing the Run For Your Lives Tour in 2025-26, The Wolf & Action Jackson knew they would have to go see a couple of shows. And when there were only European dates announced for 2025, they knew they needed to dust off their passports because there was no way they would be able to wait 2 years to see the boys on what could be their biggest and best (perhaps last?) greatest hits tour ever. So they chose Stockholm as their European venue because 1) They'd never been to Sweden and 2) Iron Maiden played 2 nights there. Plus the Wolf Cub had been promised by her father that he'd take her to see Maiden in Europe once she was old enough (but was she? Swedish authorities didn't think so but we came up with a work-around). Stockholm was an enchanting land full of beautiful people and a packed house full of Iron Maiden fans for 2 nights of heavy metal classics. We were revved up by Lzzy Hale and Halestorm who held their own on the stage and then treated to the best setlist The Wolf has seen in 30 years of seeing the band live. As The Wolf marked his 9th and 10th IM shows, they were the first without Nicko McBrain on the drums as the band introduced Simon Dawson to the family (though most knew him from Steve Harris' side project British Lion). Besides the Eddies who came out to have fun with the band, the real show was the new video screen behind the stage and on the amplifiers. It set the backdrop for the song like showing the Eiffel Tower during Murders in the Rue Morgue or a creepy graveyard for Fear of the Dark. But they also created some more interactive movies for epics like Rhime of the Ancient Mariner and Hallowed Be Thy Name. While the boys played lights out, the screen enhanced the experience and understanding of the lyrics for folks from the front row to the back of the house. Two truly magic nights in Stockholm which only left us wondering when (and where) would we see our heavy metal heroes again.
