Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

President Trump signed an executive order on Jan. 27, 2017 "Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States." Thousands around the US protested at airports following the executive order. Many have argued that the order was a Muslim ban. Others contended that it was for the safety and security of the United States. The field recording was captured Jan. 29 during one of those protests in the International Arrivals section of Terminal E at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas.  Recorded by Walker Wooding. Happy New Year to each and every one of you!We ended 2021 being downloaded in 84 countries – what a fantastic accomplishment!Thank you so much for helping to pave the way for us to reach this tremendous milestone. We're extremely proud and excited to launch Season 3 with this episode! This by far is our most ambitious episode with so many new features for our exclusive elite members and subscribers!  Thank you to Apple Music & Pandora for this unique opportunity! In a time of division, facts unite. In a time of uncertainty, facts provide clarity.  We know that the truth dies in the darkness. As we continue to shed light on difficult topics and as we approached the 1-year anniversary of the brutal attack on our Capitol and democracy – we focus the intense light of the truth on Hate and Domestic Violent Extremism (DVE), with a special focus on The Proud Boys. From Pittsburgh to Poway and Charlottesville to Charleston, HATE – and its divisive nature --seems to be everywhere.  HATE seems to permeate the very fabric of this country. HATE has always “sold well” and been a foundational characteristic of this country. HATE has a firm grip on our society: From slavery and the slave trade; to the genocide of Indigenous peoples, and the Indian Exclusion Act; to The Chinese Exclusion Act; to Executive Order 13769, titled “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States”, a.k.a. the "Muslim ban" by ex-US President Donald Trump, which was nothing more than an Executive Order to discriminate.I truly felt and still feel to this day that this country is “closer to Civil War than it ever was since April 4th, 1865, when the Civil War ended”.Sadly, HATE crimes have been growing in number in recent years in the U.S.  The FBI says that HATE crimes are at their highest levels since 2008. More murders which were motivated by HATE were recorded than ever before. The Southern Poverty Law Center has reported that there are at least 838 Hate Groups in America.  The Proud Boys are one of them.  In this episode, we define exactly what a HATE crime consists of.  We explore just who are The Proud Boys, what they believe, what are some of the things they have done. The attack on The U.S. Capitol on January 6th was born from HATRED and it came from within – it wasn't from a foreign entity or power – it was “home grown domestic terrorism”.In a sea of an enraged, blood-thirsty, violent mob of seditionists, all Trump supporters -- members of The Proud Boys descended on the Capitol with their guns, bats, knives and shields.  The neofascist Proud Boys, who claim to be “past the point of peace and crazy enough to actually do something about their perceived wrongs”, had an outsized impact and effect on much of the violent chaos and mayhem that we witnessed on January 6, 2021.Light ‘Em Up takes an in-depth look at an insurrectionist mentality that is becoming normalized and more popular in our country.  A new type of political movement that has emerged from the rabid right has extreme violence at its core.  Its proponents are emboldened to commit violence, and it is coming from the mainstream, which includes white collar workers: lawyers, doctors, business owners and architects, soccer moms and homemakers.  Tens of millions of Americans say they are willing to use violence to “change things” according to their way of how they feel things “should be”. We share in-depth information that only “Light ‘Em Up” had exclusive access to.As we mark the 1-year anniversary when democracy was on the brink of collapse. we learn from history – that we don't learn from history.  And America and Americans have a very short memory.Thank you for joining us!  We are here for you and because of you!Phil Rizzo Executive Producer

On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a writ of certiorari, agreeing to hear arguments when the nine Justices reconvene in the fall on whether President Donald Trump's Executive Order 13769, entitled Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States, , or what the President himself has called a "travel ban" is constitutional. Yet, they also lifted a stay on certain aspects of Trump's travel ban, overriding several federal appeals court decisions blocking the order. The ruling means anyone coming to the U.S. from the six countries on the travel ban (Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen) will be forced to prove they have "bone-fide ties" to a local organization or citizen in order to gain entry until the final Supreme Court decision is handed down. According to Diala Shamas, a lecturer in law and a supervising attorney at Stanford Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic who works with Muslim communities in the United States, as well as refugees stranded abroad, the SCOTUS ruling on Trump's travel ban is proof that the judicial branch cannot be the kind of check on the President's agenda that many on the left were hoping for. Her op-ed “Lawyers alone can’t save us from Trump. The Supreme Court just proved it.” appeared in Tuesday's edition of the Washington Post. In this episode of "TrumpWatch," host Jesse Lent talks to Professor Shamas about what the Supreme Court decision will mean in the immediate term for people coming to America from the six countries included in the travel ban, why it signifies the problems with expecting lawyers to be able to provide cover from the President and what citizens can do to effectively resist the change in national immigration policy if the answer isn't in the courts.

As many are likely aware by now... US President Donald Trump is acting quickly on his campaign promises. Through the use of some very strategic executive orders, he has shaken the very foundation of immigration law and policy in the United States. Although this Podcast is traditionally devoted to Canadian immigration, my special guest Heather Segal, a Canadian immigration lawyer and US immigration attorney, shares insight on not only what is happening in the US, but the potential impact it could have for Canadian immigration. If you think what is happening in the US will have no impact on us in Canada, listen to what Heather has to say... you might just have a different outlook when you are finished! [smart_track_player url="http://traffic.libsyn.com/canadianimmigrationpodcast/CIP_S2_E5.mp3" social="true" social_twitter="true" social_facebook="true" social_gplus="true" social_linkedin="true" ] If you are anything like me, you are probably wondering what the heck is going on south of the border. Although many of us thought President Donald Trump would do some pretty crazy things while in office, I'll bet none of you thought he would act so quickly to ensure his campaign promises became a reality. I am seriously starting to think that President Trump's wall between Mexico and the US might actually happen....... who actually "pays for it" is an entirely different topic. Heather Segal and I had a great time talking about what is happening in the US and musing over the possible ramifications, both good and bad, for immigration in Canada. One thing is certain, we will be impacted one way or another. With any luck for us immigration lawyers, Canadian immigration will be booming once again in just a few short months. Heather Segal is founder of Segal Immigration Law in Toronto. She is widely recognized for her expertise in immigration law and she speaks regularly at conferences and seminars throughout the world. Heather practices exclusively in the area of Canadian immigration law and American Consular and Border immigration law. She has spent a decade as a Director on the Board of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). She is currently a member of the AILA Customs and Border Protection National Liaison Committee. She was voted by her peers as one of the world's leading practitioners in corporate immigration law in 2018 in Who's Who Legal - Corporate Immigration, a distinction I am also grateful to have received. In this episode Heather and I discussed the following topics: background on the current executive orders and what they mean; how US immigration policy compares with immigration policy in Canada; the potential impacts of US immigration policy on Canadian immigration; what President Trump intends for H1B and L visas in the US; and what does President Trump have in store for NAFTA. In the 2nd episode of Aider & Abettor, Sajid and Avi start with the "Opening Statement" where they discuss President Donald Trump’s Executive Order “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States” commonly known as the #MuslimBan (0:30).  They share their excitement and pride about the role of lawyers in the movement to counter this new policy and emphasize the need for self-care for activists working to effectuate change.      In the "Deep Dive" segment, they break down another Executive Order by President Donald Trump, “Executive Order: Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States,” and the cross-section between the criminal justice system and immigration laws (14:40). They express concerns about the potential consequences of this policy to prioritize removal of non-citizens merely accused of crimes.  They go on to talk about sanctuary cities and the the interaction, or lack thereof, between states and the federal government in the enforcement of immigration laws. Sajid and Avi finish up with their "Thing(s)" of the week (34:50).  Sajid shares a courtroom experience from last week that reminded him of a silver lining to an otherwise haunting election day: the passage of Prop 57 which took the power to charge minors as adults away from California DAs.  Avi recounts his brush with the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in an airport.  They finish up making their Super Bowl picks between the Patriots and Falcons.
