Deep debt, political chaos, riots: Can Macron get France back on track?

In June 2024 French President Emmanuel Macron took a political gamble – and lost heavily.Hoping to strengthen his centrist alliance he dissolved the National Assembly triggering an election. The result has been chaos – a legislature with no dominant political bloc in power and leading this week to France naming its fourth prime minister in 12 months and riots on the streets of Paris. At the centre of the political chaos is the threat of austerity budgets. France is deep in debt and a succession of Macron-appointment prime ministers have proposed budgets with tax hikes and deep cuts.On Monday, prime minister François Bayrou was ousted by a decisive vote after he proposed a tough budget. By Wednesday, Macron had appointed a replacement, Sébastien Lecornu. The problem for the next government, Lecornu's, is that a budget still needs to be passed and securing the backing of a very divided parliament will be difficult. The world's stage does see not much of French prime ministers because the president, Macron, holds substantial powers over foreign policy and European affairs. So does this open the door to a snap election? And how damaging is this for Macron that his own country is in chaos while he bestrides the stage, positioning himself as a powerful European leader.Naomi O'Leary, Irish Times European correspondent, explains a bleak week in French politics.Presented by Bernice Harrison. SEND ME A TEXT MESSAGE NOWEvery year, people talk about Labor Day as if it is just a long weekend, a time to grill in the backyard or grab a bargain at the store. I wanted to step back and ask the harder question of what this day was meant to represent in the first place. When the noise of the cookouts and sales fades, what remains is the story of struggle, sacrifice, and lives that were forever changed by the fight for dignity at work.Labor Day was not born out of leisure. It came from marches that filled the streets, from strikes that shut down factories, and from people who believed that a fair wage and safe conditions were worth risking everything. These weren't abstract battles. They were real people, often forgotten, who stood together because they had no choice but to demand something better. In this episode, I take a closer look at why the holiday matters and why the history is more urgent today than most people realize. It is easy to believe we are far removed from those early conflicts, but the truth is, many of the same pressures and injustices are still with us. The names and industries may have changed, but the fight to be treated as human beings and not disposable parts of a machine continues.I recorded this episode in the shadow of a holiday that has become comfortable, even casual, in our culture. That comfort hides the blood and courage that brought it into being. What does it mean to really honor Labor Day if we only acknowledge it through hamburgers, fireworks, or a sale sign in the window? The answer is not complicated, but it demands honesty. As you listen, I ask you to carry forward the memory of those who came before us. Their voices may be gone, but their impact remains in every break we take, every hour of overtime we get paid, and every weekend we spend with our families. Labor Day is not just a day off. It is a reminder of how fragile progress can be, and how easily we forget the cost of what we now take for granted. This episode is not about nostalgia. It is about recognition. It is about facing the real meaning of Labor Day and deciding whether we are content to forget it, or whether we still have the will to stand for something bigger than ourselves.AWorldGoneMadPodcast@gmail.com

Economy Watch
US courts doubt Trump had tariff-tax authority

Economy Watch

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2025 7:31

Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news there was an unexpected turn in the US tariff situation late last week.In a dramatic ruling, most of Trump's global tariffs were declared illegal by a US appeals court that found he exceeded his authority in imposing them. He will almost certainly appeal to his Supreme Court. Then, over the weekend we got the official Chinese PMIs for August and they extended the sluggish environment their manufacturing sector finds itself in. Despite the 90 'extension' before punitive tariffs kick in with the US, orders contracted for a fifth consecutive month. On the services side however, they maintained their small expansion in August, albeit marginally better. But early data suggests their housing slump is not ending, maybe even getting worse. Sale volumes in August are likely to be more than -17% lower than a year ago.Although it is a shortened week in the US, it ends with the August jobs data. Markets expect another weak result (just +78,000). You will recall the weak data last month saw Trump fire the agency head who compiled it. So there will be special attention this time on its believability under the BLS agency's deputy. Before that we will get lead-up jobs data, the ISM PMIs for the US.Canada will also release labour market data. The EU inflation data, and others will release GDP data for Q2-2025, including from Australia on Wednesday. At the end of last week, July data out in the US shows that disposable personal income was up +2.0% from a year ago, personal consumption expenditure was up +2.1% on the same basis. On a month-on-month basis, the income was up +0.4% and expenditure up +0.5%. These elements are not major but they do indicate a tightening in household financial budgets.Nested deep within this release was that core PCE index rose 2.9% year-on-year in July, its largest rise since February and above the Fed's target and comfort zone. Tariff costs are getting the blame. Financial markets noticed. And that is the same sort of tightening indicated by the widely-watched University of Michigan sentiment survey. Its final August version fell back markedly from its initial readings, a clear indication households are finding it tougher. It is now -14% lower than a year ago. The Biden boom is now just a memory. On the factory floor, the latest indicators are shifting down too. The August Chicago PMI headed south quite sharply to be -10% below year-ago levels. And the US seems to be losing the tariff war it started - and Americans are paying the tariff-taxes. The latest trade data for July shows that the US merchandise trade deficit jumped to -US$104 billion in the month, exactly the same as July a year ago, and far above expectations of -US$90 bln deficit. It is their largest in four months. Imports jumped +7.1% from a month earlier, led by industrial supplies, capital goods, food, and consumer goods. Meanwhile, exports slipped -0.1%.Certainly, American farmers are not happy. And they have a President who probably doesn't even know where Pakistan is, let alone most other simple facts. In Canada, they got a sharp dose of shock in their Q2-2025 GDP result from the sharp turn on them from their southern neighbour. Their GDP fell -0.4% in the quarter and cancelling out the +0.5% gain in their first quarter. Year-on-year their GDP is still up +0.9% however.Across the Pacific the economic data is generally much more positive. South Korea's retail sales surged +2.5% in July from June, a big jump from a revised +0.7% increase in June and marking the fastest growth in over two years. From a year ago it is up +2.4% and that too is the most since January 2022.South Korean industrial production grew solidly in July as well, up +5.0% from a year ago. After a good gain in June, Japan's industrial production fell -1.6% in July, reversing a +2.1% June gain and much more than the -1.0% decline anticipated.Japanese retail sales only rose by +0.3% in July from a year ago, slowing sharply from a downwardly revised +1.9% gain in June and falling well short of market expectations for a +1.8% increase. But Japanese consumer confidence actually rose in August to its best level of the year with gains across all surveyed questions. We should also note that protests in Jakarta on Friday that turned deadly have put Indonesia on edge. They have spread over the weekend. Canberra will be watching nervously. In Europe, the ECB's survey found that consumer inflation expectations were stable ("well anchored") in July at 2.6% for the year ahead.Globally, air passenger demand was up +4.0% in July, driven by the Asia/Pacific +5.7% rise and held back by the North American +1.9% rise. Most of this is due to international travel. Meanwhile, air cargo traffic was even stronger in July, up +5.5% from a year ago, up +6.0% for international trade. Asia/Pacific was the strongest region here too, up +11.0% for international cargoes. But North American international cargo volumes only rose +1.5%, the weakest global region. The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.23%, unchanged from Saturday, but down -3 bps from a week ago. The price of gold will start today at US$3,447/oz, up another +US$5 from Saturday, and close to a new record high, but basically a measure of the USD markdown. A week ago it was at US$3,371/oz so a net +US$76 gainAmerican oil prices are again little-changed at US$64/bbl with the international Brent price holding just under US$67.50/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is at just under 59 USc and unchanged from Saturday at this time, up +30 bps for the week. Against the Aussie we are holding at 90.1 AUc. Against the euro we are unchanged as well at 50.5 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just under 66.5, and unchanged from Saturday, up +20 bps for the week. The bitcoin price starts today at US$109,022 and up +0.5% from this time Saturday. But is down -6.7% for the week. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been low at just on +/- 0.5%.You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.

Matt Trump fights through tech gremlins to deliver a powerful episode on the turmoil unfolding in England. From the migrant hotel battles in Epping to the haunting legacy of Rotherham's scandals, he traces how years of neglect and two-tier justice have fueled today's eruption of English patriotism. Revisiting the 2024 Southport stabbings and the government's heavy-handed crackdowns, Matt shows how frustration boiled over into riots, arrests, and now a peaceful wave of St. George's Cross flags spreading across the country. He connects these events to broader questions of national identity, sovereignty, and the deliberate humiliation of English heritage, weaving in history from the Battle of Agincourt to the cultural imprint of The Who. With reflections on faith, Shakespeare adaptations, and the genius of grassroots resistance, this episode captures the spirit of a nation rediscovering itself in defiance of its rulers.

Delays in PJM's interconnection queue have stalled 143 gigawatts of new projects (mostly renewables like solar and wind), creating a bottleneck.  Reliance on natural gas, which can be expensive and unreliable during extreme weather, has also driven up costs. Offshore wind projects, part of the state's clean energy push, have faced setbacks and higher costs, contributing to the supply-demand mismatch. Political and Policy Context Governor Phil Murphy's administration has pursued aggressive clean energy goals (e.g., 100% clean energy by 2035, EV mandates), which supporters say are necessary for long-term sustainability but critics blame for closing plants and inflating costs without adequate backups. In response, the state offered relief like $100-200 credits per household and deferred some costs.    https://twitter.com/KobeissiLetter/status/1954841769272541503     Fed structure may be in flux, not just rates For one, Miran, who has written about re-ordering the Fed voting system and appointment process and binding the central bank more closely to government thinking, still has to be confirmed by the Senate. While that process may be expedited, because he was already confirmed as a White House official, he would ostensibly only hold the post until Kugler's term formally ends in January. He would also only get one vote under the current system, and Trump has yet to name his pick to replace Chair Jerome Powell next May. But most Fed watchers think Miran is likely to be confirmed for the full board term eventually, even if he's not considered a candidate for the top job. For some critics, Trump's dramatic embrace of digital assets, crypto tokens and stablecoins is already an indication of a very real direction of travel that could transform the monetary world and banking system. The Drive - A Daily Devotional by Pastor Mike Sternad

Send us a textAct 19:29-41So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's companions in travel. But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him. And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater. Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd. But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky? Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash. For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess. If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly. For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.” And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.Support the show

Trump Rejects Epstein Obsession, Fires Comey's Daughter President Trump lashes out at MAGA supporters still focused on the Epstein case, calling them “past supporters” duped by a hoax. Meanwhile, the DOJ fires Maurene Comey, James Comey's daughter and a former Epstein-related prosecutor. Bryan notes how bizarre the case has become, especially with Ghislaine Maxwell now appealing to the Supreme Court under Epstein's old plea deal. Trump Uses IRS Data to Locate and Deport Illegal Immigrants The administration is now using IRS records, including ITIN filings, to track down updated addresses for undocumented migrants. Democrats warn of racial profiling and mass arrests, but a court has upheld the program. ICE arrests are climbing toward an annual pace of 330,000, with new policies encouraging self-deportation and long-term detention for those apprehended. Eswatini Accepts U.S. Deportees the World Refuses to Take The African kingdom of Eswatini has agreed to imprison deportees that countries like Cuba, Yemen, and Laos refuse to accept. King Mswati III has taken in five convicted criminals for now. Bryan praises the move as a brilliant deterrent: mess with America and end up in a country you can't find on a map. Riots in Spain as Migrant Violence Sparks Vigilante Justice After a 68-year-old Spaniard was beaten by Moroccan migrants, vigilante attacks erupted in Torre Pacheco. Bryan frames this as part of a larger European backlash against open borders and leftist immigration policies that ignore cultural and national identity. Gaza Stampede Kills 20 as Humanitarian Aid Crisis Deepens Armed militants reportedly triggered a deadly panic at a Gaza aid site. Israeli leaders and military officials blame disorganized aid distribution and lingering Hamas interference. Peace talks remain deadlocked over the group's future role and the governance of Gaza. Mali Junta Uses Helicopters to Steal $117M in Gold from U.S. Miner Mali's ruling junta seized a ton of gold from Barrick's mine after a profit-sharing dispute. The theft underscores growing instability and radicalism in Africa, where Russian meddling and Islamic terror groups are driving waves of migration into Europe.
