Welcome to this week's episode of the [Insert Podcast Name], where your favorite comedy duo makes sense of the senseless—one sarcastic joke at a time. Here's what we tackled:1. Adriana Smith & Georgia's Dystopian Abortion LawsThe tragic story of Adriana Smith—a brain-dead woman being kept on life support against her family's wishes—highlights just how extreme Georgia's abortion restrictions have become. It's like the Handmaid's Tale… except somehow less fictional.2. David Geffen's Go-Go Divorce82-year-old media mogul David Geffen is splitting from his 32-year-old go-go dancer husband. We're shocked, shocked that marrying someone 50 years younger didn't work out. True love, meet prenup.3. Venezuelans for Trump (Until He Meant Them)Venezuelan voters in Doral, Florida are suddenly questioning their MAGA hats. Trump's mass deportation plans weren't supposed to apply to them, right? Spoiler: They do.4. Salvatore Garau's Invisible SculpturesYes, an Italian artist is selling invisible sculptures. Real money. Fake art. He's out here living every art major's dream—and we can't even get people to pay attention to our  podcast.5.

Bacardi Jackson took over the role of Executive Director of the ACLU of Florida in May of 2024. Prior to joining the 60-year-old organization, Jackson was deputy legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center's “Democracy: Education and Youth” advocacy and litigation team, where she led efforts to stop the school-to-prison pipeline and to ensure equitable access to mental health services and high-quality public education in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. We talk about the work the ACLU of Florida is focusing on now, as the executives, both here in Florida and at the federal level, are exerting their executive power beyond the bounds of what we're accustomed to.

This week Chris and Jason read and discussed a paper Chris wrote for a strategic studies project about neo-Nazi terror networks and their links to far-right militias in Ukraine. The influx of foreign fighters to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion of 2022 has outpaced US intel and law enforcement agencies' ability to monitor potential radicals going to and coming from Ukraine. Far-right extremists have been drawn to the conflict in Ukraine since 2014 due to affiliated organizations that belong to a web of loosely related violent neo-fascist organizations. Several affiliated extremists have been apprehended planning terror attacks and other acts of violence. Amos, Howard, and Harriet Salem. 2014. “Ukraine Clashes: Dozens Dead after Odessa Building Fire.” The Guardian. The Rules: For each quad, pick the number of gymnasts based on the rules at that time (e.g. the Sydney format is 6-5-4, Athens is 6-3-3, London is 5-3-3, Tokyo is 4-3-3 + 2 individuals) If you are too heartbroken to leave an athlete at home, you can name 2 travelling alternates. You can even name two non-travelling alternates if you must  With all of the best gymnasts from the quad competing at their quad-level peak with no injuries, burnout, and retirements, who do you pick? If you enjoyed what you listened to, you can support us by leaving a review and sharing our podcast in your networks!   GLOSSARYIncels (p. 5 in the transcript, 19:50)Incel is a member of an online subculture of primarily heterosexual men who identify as being unable to have romantic or sexual relationships. This self-described inability to form attachments is often expressed as grievance toward women. Incel subculture has been associated with misogyny, extremism, rape culture, and expressions and acts of violence. Incels are a subset of the “manosphere,” which includes other online communities animated by sexism and hostility toward women, such as pickup artists, Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW), and men's rights activists. The Southern Poverty Law Center classifies incels as a hate group and identifies them as part of the online male supremacist ecosystem. The term incel was initially coined by a woman. Known only by her first name, a Canadian woman named Alana began using the term invcel (later shortened to incel) in 1997 to connect with other singles struggling with social awkwardness. She documented her experiences on her personal website, “Alana's Involuntary Celibacy Project,” which became a forum for people struggling to form romantic relationships. In 2000 Alana stopped participating in the project, and she has since said that she feels uncomfortable with how the term has been hijacked. As incel communities began to establish themselves on the forum-based websites Reddit and 4chan, the term shifted from its initial meaning. By 2010 incel was associated with misogynistic trolling and threats of violence by men's rights groups operating on fringe right-wing platforms. In 2017 Reddit banned a particularly active subreddit called r/incels for violating Reddit's rule against content that “encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual or group of people.” source Me Too movement (p. 7 in the transcript, 26:22)Me Too movement is an awareness movement around the issue of sexual harassment and sexual abuse of women in the workplace that grew to prominence in 2017 in response to news reports of sexual abuse by American film producer Harvey Weinstein. While the phrase had been in the lexicon for more than a decade, a tweet by American actress Alyssa Milano sparked a social media phenomenon that raised awareness, gave voice to survivors, and led to sweeping cultural and workplace changes. The movement is credited with giving visibility to the scope of sexual violence within the United States and across the world. It is also defined by a push for accountability, including examining power structures in the workplace that had enabled misconduct, and, in some cases, renewed efforts to seek justice for survivors through criminal and civil court systems. In the first year of the movement, numerous prominent men lost their jobs after they were publicly accused of wrongdoing. Since then, the Me Too movement's legacy has broadened to encompass issues related to gender equity in the workplace and legal reforms to eliminate barriers that had prohibited victims from coming forward. Some U.S. states have since abolished statutes of limitations for reporting sexual crimes and banned nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) that aimed to keep misconduct allegations from the public's view. The movement has also led to changes in the workplace and society at large through the implementation of greater safeguards and educational tools that aim to change behavior in future generations. source

Story of the Week (DR):Trump signed an order ending DEI. Here's what it means for Fortune 500 companiesTrump's latest presidential moves mandate government agencies to specifically target companies in the private sector engaged in what it describes as “illegal DEI discrimination and preferences.”Despite the intended chilling effect of these executive moves, multiple legal sources point out that Trump's order and action do not constitute a change in the law. Rather, the language used in the order simply “enforces longstanding federal civil rights laws,” says Britney N.D. Torres, senior counsel at employment law firm Littler.Trump's executive moves just mean that companies will have to continue to carefully review their DEI-related policies, practices and initiatives based on longstanding anti-discrimination laws, and make sure they can't be interpreted in a way that is different from what they intended, she says. This week in Davos, Jamie Dimon reaffirmed JPMorgan's DEI commitments after the National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative nonprofit, proposed the bank revisit how compensation is tied to the company's racial-equity goal. “Bring them on,” said Dimon referring to the efforts from right-leaning groups. “We are going to continue to reach out to the Black community, the Hispanic community, the LGBT community, the veterans community.”Will this ever trickle down to JPM leadership?15 on Operating Committee: 1 POC (an Indian man–Sanoke Viswanathan, CEO of International Consumer and Wealth–who came from McKinsey); 7/15 F though so some credit dueBoard: nearly 50% F but a woeful -21% gender gap; no leadership positions on board or top 3 committees: only committees where women have power are Public Responsibility Committee and Risk Committee; 11 on board: 9 WM and 2 BFCan we stop pretending board and shareholder oversight is a thing? This week, Josh Moon and David Person delve into the chaotic landscape of American politics, particularly focusing on the Trump administration's impact, the rise of celebrity billionaires, and the ongoing issues surrounding immigration and economic realities. They discuss the disconnect between political rhetoric and the lived experiences of Americans. Then, Jerome Dees from the Southern Poverty Law Center, zooms in to discuss the implications of the Trump administration's policies, particularly focusing on poverty and immigration issues in Alabama. Jerome emphasizes the need for effective communication about how policies impact everyday lives and the importance of addressing deep-seated poverty. Finally, the recent actions of the Republican party regarding the pardons of January 6th insurrectionists. They discuss the implications of these pardons on the party's image as the "law and order" party, the violence that occurred during the Capitol riot, and the ongoing struggles for accountability in the aftermath. We need to remember the Monroe Doctrine. Also: the Southern Poverty Law Center puts out an annual hate map, in which they showcase hate groups like “anti-government groups” that promote “conspiratorial and dubious views of government…as evidenced by the movement's popular rhetoric on such issues as COVID-19 regulation.” Also on the SPLC's hate list: people who don't think that drag queen story hours promote literacy.
