Ryan Crafts joins The Nice Cult to discuss The Freedomite movement. This movement consists of a split-off of the Doukhobors, a community of Spiritual Christians who had emigrated from Russia to Canada in the late 1800s. The Freedomite movement first appeared in 1902 in Saskatchewan, and later in the Kootenay and Boundary Districts of British Columbia. The Good: So committed that they would burn their own house down just to prove a point. Ideal of community and self sufficiency are good. Nude Protesting. The Bad: So committed that they would burn their own house down just to prove a point. Burning money Nude Protesting. Bombs The Culty (is there anything in this cult worth incorporating into our own?): This week The Nice Cult takes on building a tutorial on how to create a cult... while in the nude. For this week's episode we are excited to present two cults you may never have heard of before! First, Kelsey shares the very complicated history between a Canadian "cult" and the government, let's just say Kelsey thinks both sides did a few things wrong. Then, Alanna spreads the message of a supernatural cult whose beliefs are out of this world, but you may still find yourself agreeing with. So get ready and tune in for the first, of we hope many, cult episodes. Join us!! Listener voted cult...that doesn't seem all that cult like, in one sense, after researching. More like nude, semi-anarchist hippies. From Russia to Canada. And who is the real bad guy, here? Not necessarily the "Freedomites." It isn't what expected before researching, and goes to show, there are always at least two sides to a story. On today's episode of Let's Start A Cult we will be talking about The Freedomites also called The Sons of Freedom, and their fight to save their children from the government. The Freedomites were a religious, extremist cult that used nudity, arson, and...
How do you practice safe sects? You stay out of cults. This week we are talking cults. Two cults in particular. Nydia shares with us the story of the Order of the Solar Temple. These are the folks who sacrificed a baby and then held mass suicides in three countries. Was it suicide though or an elaborate murder plot? Dana tells us about the Freedomites are a sect of Russian dissenters who were notorious for violently protesting their right to be pacifists. I hope the irony wasn’t lost on you. For dinner, we had creamy garlic swiss chard chicken which left us going back for seconds. For dessert, we had Russian peach, cranberry, and almond sharlotka. It’s known as a Russian dump cake. It was a perfect dessert for anyone with an extreme sweet tooth. Our wine was Frenzy a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with deliciously refreshing hints of peaches, melon, lime, and grapefruit. A perfect light wine for under $10. Oh Lordy, it's religion week. Which we're approaching with as much tact as you would expect for a delicate subject like this. Sam discusses the Freedomites, Canada's nudist vegan terrorists (pacifist terrorism, of course. The best kind). Meanwhile Tom discusses the origins of the term buggery. Which, it turns out, may just be a bit of medieval fake news. Subscribe and listen to us! Apple Music // Podbean // Overcast // Stitcher // TuneIn // Spotify Welcome to That Was Genius: Two blokes. A 12-hour time difference. An immature sense of humour. And 10,000 years of human civilisation. A weekly podcast looking at the weirder side of history. Join Sam Datta-Paulin (he likes history and lives in Britain) and Tom Berry (he also likes history but lives in New Zealand), for a weekly reflection on the bold, the brilliant... And the downright strange. From bizarre events and stories to equally odd inventions, barely a day goes by without something incredible (or incredibly stupid) happening around the world.
