Host Jason Blitman talks to Charlotte McConaghy (Wild Dark Shore) about Charlotte's journey from writing fantasy epics to exploring real-world themes, environmentalism and human connection in her recent works, and the challenges and joys of depicting complex, authentic characters. Jason is then joined by Guest Gay Reader Bruce Vilanch who shares amusing anecdotes from his vast career in entertainment, including his experiences with celebrities and the most memorable—and infamous—projects he's worked on. Charlotte McConaghy is the author of the international bestseller MIGRATIONS, a TIME Magazine Best Book of the Year and the Amazon Best Fiction Book of the Year for 2020, which is being translated into over twenty-five languages and adapted for film, as well as the New York Times Bestseller ONCE THERE WERE WOLVES. Her forthcoming novel WILD DARK SHORE will be released March 4, 2025. She lives in Sydney, Australia.Bruce Vilanch is an actor (occasionally an actress), writer (occasionally a rewriter), and comedian (occasionally for money, often for causes). He has coauthored 25 Academy Award spectacles, winning two writing Emmys in the process, and has been nominated for seven more. In addition to the Oscars, he has cowritten many Tonys, Emmys, Grammys, People's Choice, American Comedy Awards, TV Land Awards, SAG Awards, and a ton of other pageants, roasts, tributes, and various trumped-up reasons for people to strut a red carpet. He has coauthored dozens of variety television shows and actually put words in the mouth of Cher. He's also a lyricist, scoring gold and platinum records for disco songs he wrote for Eartha Kitt and the Village People. And musical theatre geeks will remember him as the coauthor of the Broadway misfire called Platinum, which was revived off-Broadway for reasons that continue to mystify Bruce.BOOK CLUB!Use code GAYSREADING at checkout to get first book for only $4 + free shipping! Our next ensemble song takes us to 1890s Germany via Broadway in 2006. Spring Awakening, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by rocker Duncan Sheik, is based on an 1891 German play that explores many of the worst things that can occur to a person, especially during adolescence. Winner of 8 Tonys, the show speaks frankly about sexuality, abuse, and mental health, and while "The Song of Purple Summer" -- which we talk about in this episode -- doesn't address those issues directly, the show definitely does, as does our discussion. Listener discretion is very much advised: parents, talk to your kids before this one. Feeling old yet, Slackers? When we were young, there were so many movie stars—and not just the Brat Pack. Sean Penn, Kiefer Sutherland, and Elisabeth Shue come to mind. Fast forward to today, and these former young heartthrobs and beloved teen idols have become Hollywood royalty, winning some of the industry's most prestigious awards, including Golden Globes, Academy Awards, Emmys, and Tonys. Movies like TAPS and Fast Times at Ridgemont High boast numerous award winners, including multiple Oscar wins. While Sean Penn received recognition fairly early in his career, actors like Christian Slater and Jennifer Jason Leigh didn't receive any significant award buzz until 30+ years into their careers. Though I'm an avowed Ferris Bueller hater, it was still pretty cool to see Alan Ruck (Cameron) receive nominations for his role on Succession.Although I don't typically pay much attention to award shows, I'm rooting for Demi Moore to finally win the big one for her role in The Substance. We dive into how these stars have evolved—not just in their careers, but in their artistry—transforming from iconic teen roles into multi-award-winning performances. We explore their journeys from being the faces of an era to becoming respected actors and performers across different genres. It's fascinating to see these once-young stars redefine what it means to age gracefully in Hollywood while staying relevant, admired, and celebrated.

I could not be more excited, because today is R and P day on the show! That's right — today we're chatting with the fabulous Lindsay Jill Roth, one of my new favorite people, about her book Romances & Practicalities: A Love Story (Maybe Yours!) in 250 Questions, which comes out today, January 28. I spoke to Lindsay just before my wedding, and even though I was obviously in major love mode in the leadup to that, let's be honest — I'm always in major love mode. I'm a hopeless romantic, and I love reading books about relationships, and Lindsay's book and the 250 questions within it gave my husband and I a chance to bond even more during our engagement. R and P is not just the title of Lindsay's new book, but also a system created by her — today she tells us about that system and what she hopes it achieves; how this great idea originated; the methodology for choosing these 250 questions to help get to know someone more deeply; how she chose the sections of the book, which include Animals and Pets; Communication; Relationships, Sex, and Sexuality; In-Laws and Families of Origin; Chores, Domestic Duties, and Building a Home; Health and Medical; Children; Careers; Money and Finances; Weddings and Marriage; and Religion, Spirituality, and Politics. Romances & Practicalities is filled with experts and interesting people, and in it is sprinkled details of Lindsay's own romance with her now husband. Lindsay clarifies, by the way, that you do not have to be partnered to take this inventory, and that it's for everyone; I also ask her about what she means when she writes in the book “The sexiest kind of romance is also the most practical” and what it's like to write a book about relationships after writing a novel in the past, and how those two experiences differ. Let me introduce you to Lindsay — she is an award-winning television and live events producer who has created and developed a wide variety of programming globally, including original content for NBC, ESPN, BET, Billboard, Food Network, the Grammys, the TONYs, the Masters, and the U.S. Open. She is the former producer of the Emmy-nominated Larry King Now and the creator and executive producer of Haylie Duff's Real Girls Kitchen. As I mentioned a moment ago, Lindsay is also a novelist, writing What Pretty Girls Are Made Of in 2015. I am thrilled for her in this new adventure, and I certainly think she's found a big time calling here. Let's dig into it. “Gypsy,” a work by Stephen Sondheim, Jule Styne, and Arthur Laurents, is often called the greatest of American musicals; a new production on Broadway is a noteworthy event, especially when a star like Audra McDonald is cast in the lead role of Rose. McDonald has won six Tonys for her acting, in both plays and musicals. In the repertoire of musicals, race in casting is still very much an issue, and one columnist criticized her portrayal of Rose because of her race. “I have dealt with this my entire career,” McDonald tells Michael Schulman, recalling that in her breakout performance, in “Carousel,” some audiences “were upset with me that I was playing Carrie, saying, ‘She wouldn't have been Black.' There's a man who comes down from heaven with a star in his hand!” In a wide-ranging interview onstage at The New Yorker Festival, McDonald discusses how when she was a child theatre was initially intended to be a type of therapy for her, and the roles her parents wouldn't let her take. “Gypsy” is currently in previews on Broadway.

(1964) Mame (1966) Dear World (1969), Mack & Mabel (1974) The Grand Tour (1979), La Cage (1983), Jerry's Girls (1985) and "Mrs. Santa Claus" (1966), a CBS TV special starring Angela Lansbury.  Showtune, a revue of his life's work, is performing in regional theatres around the country.  His string of awards and honors includes, Tonys, Grammys, Drama Desk Awards, the Johnny Mercer Award, the Richard Rodgers Award, the Oscar Hammerstein Award, the Frederick Lowe Award, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Theatre Hall of Fame.     Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)
