The Reel Schmooze on 'Beaufort': How Israel left Lebanon in 2000 with a bang

The Times of Israel Daily Briefing

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 13, 2026 46:54

Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. The duo sat down to record early this week during the confluence of three major events: Iran again struck Israel, the Tonys were awarded, and RUSH played in Los Angeles. Movie maven Hoffman gives us the Jangles from the awards recognizing the best Broadway productions during the 2025–26 season and follows up with all that is Jewish about RUSH. The main feature this week is Joseph Cedar's 2007 "Beaufort," which became all too relevant again when the IDF recaptured the medieval castle early last week. Set in 2000, the blockbuster Israeli film depicts the (then) final week of the IDF's occupation of the famed UNESCO site in southern Lebanon. In the grisly Oscar-nominated movie, we meet -- and lose -- soldier after soldier who are stuck on the besieged rock. As it hits all too close to home for mother-of-soldiers Borschel-Dan, she decides to grade the film according to two scales. Let's hear who gave it an "oy," "meh" or the prized "not bad" this week on The Reel Schmooze. The Reel Schmooze is produced by Ari Schlacht and can be found wherever you get your podcasts.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Happy Lonely Guy Friday (with a little Regular Guy Friday mixed in when Kelsey joins Kev later in the  'progrim')! Today, Kev explores why so many of our core beliefs are formed before we're even teenagers—and why changing them later in life (like 35-55) can feel so difficult. He breaks down how researchers think every generation thinks they've changed a lot in the past decade but won't change much in the next one - and why it's a lie. Plus, why nearly half of what we do every day is driven by habit, the real reason personal growth stalls, and why self-awareness—not more information—is often the key to transformation. Kev shares why major life events, identity shifts, and even heartbreak can become powerful catalysts for change, and why lasting growth comes from repetition, not one big breakthrough. He also dives into how survival mode can make us forget the lessons we've already learned, why we all need periodic emotional tune-ups, and how the right community can help us become the people we're trying to be. We also tackle  multitasking, people-pleasing, and how constantly putting everyone else first may be getting in the way of your biggest dreams. Then a discussion on one of life's most pressing questions: what's the difference between the people at the Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys? Bye Betches. You are joining us for another perennial favorite here on Time Sensitive. At the end of nearly every episode, we ask our guest hosts a simple question: What are you into? Even though this sounds like a sexual invitation (it mostly isn't), we ask our guests to focus on a movie, book, album, game, podcast, or pop culture subject they are currently enjoying. But no one ever asks Sam and Ian what they are into, so we have decided to devote a whole episode to our own pop culture proclivities.Check us out on...Twitter @TSMoviePodFacebook: Time SensitiveInstagram: @timesensitivepodcastGrab some Merch at TeePublicBig Heads Media

NBL Rewind: Broadway's Biggest Night – Voting for the Tonys The Tony Award nominations for 2026 just dropped, so we are rewinding back to our Tony episode from 2025. The lights are bright on Broadway as Katie and Josh learn all about the Tony Awards from Broadway producer Rashad Chambers and the Wharton Center's Eric Olmscheid, who both serve as Tonys voters. We discuss seeing 42 shows in a season, the voting process, Tonys marketing and press, the role the Tonys play in the larger theater industry landscape, and more. We even make some 2025 awards predictions! Rashad V. Chambers is a Tony Award-winning Broadway and film producer; his show Purpose won two Tony Awards in 2025. (https://www.esquireentertainment.com/). Eric Olmscheid is the Executive Director of the Wharton Center for Performing Arts in East Lansing, MI (https://www.whartoncenter.com/). Actor/writer talks about being in The Vacant Lot, the sketch show immediately after Kids In the Hall and how the CBC tanked it, what it takes to be a bad waiter, why Canadians are funny in the US, how Canada makes people take turns being successful, how show business culls the herd, and the great conversation he had with his dad on the day he died.  Bio:  Paul Greenberg is an Emmy-winning writer, producer and performer whose work spans television and film. He co-created the cult sketch comedy series The Vacant Lot and the mockumentary-style series International Ghost Investigators: Hollywood Division. Greenberg has collaborated with some of the biggest names in entertainment, most recently with Jim Carrey on the script for Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and has served as Neil Patrick Harris' main writer for his hosting duties, which includes the Emmys, Tonys and Oscars. As a performer, he can be seen alongside Dana Gould as the painfully naive bandleader, Rusty Steel, on the satirical talk show Hanging with Dr. Z. Currently, Paul is at work again with Jim Carrey on the aptly titled sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The world just celebrated Shakespeare's birthday — born in late April, a scant four hundred and sixty two years ago, which makes him almost as old as this podcast. Over the years we've had many guests on The Sewers of Paris for whom Shakespeare's work was an inspiration, and this week we'll hear my 2021 with Jeffrey Masters — then the host of the acclaimed podcast LGBTQ&A, and now a senior producer at The New Yorker Radio Hour. Jeffrey launched his career in interviews and storytelling with a move to LA, planning to be an actor. And at first, he found that his Shakespearean training left him unprepared for what Hollywood was looking for. Also: A quick heads-up that the Sewers of Paris will take a little pause for the month of May — but you can come see me live, because I'll be on a book and speaking tour all month long. Come see me in Stockholm; Vienna; Utrecht; and Heidelberg, Germany. More details and dates are on my website.

Hello, and welcome to the Reloading Podcast here on the Firearms Radio Network.   Tonight the gang is talking about moving the shoulder back on necked cartridges and why or why not it's important.    We push the shoulder back on our fired cases during full length sizing. This allows the case to fit back into the chamber freely without stressing the action or causing the case to develop uneven contact points, any of this would lead to in-accuracy. Other problems that could happen is galling of the bolt lugs. How we get to pushing the shoulder back can be done in different ways. Use a Full Length Die, Next we have a Shoulder Bump Neck Size die. Some Body dies will push the shoulder while not touching the neck. Neck sizing works for a limited time or until the case becomes so tight in the guns chamber that it becomes almost impossible to close the bolt. How much do we set back the shoulder?  I use 0.0015” to 0.002” for bolt actions. Take a caliper and close the jaws to zero then open to 0.0015 or 0.002” you have to hold it up to the light just to see how little we are pushing back shoulders, for bolt guns. Single shots need the full 0.002” to 0.0025” or 0.003” with falling block action not having much camming power. Lastly we deal with Semi-auto actions, in some ways they have little camming power, and in other ways with bolt force (action slamming) it can force the case into the chamber. Crushing it into the chamber. So now we set the shoulder back 0.003” to 0.004”. This allows the cartridge to fit without damage to cartridge.    Cartridge corner:    Suicide hotline 988 or 800-273-8255 https://walkthetalkamerica.org/ For Active Military or veterans, www.militaryonesource.com   Reviews:   Reloading Podcast Merch link   Please remember to use the affiliate links for Amazon and Brownells from the Webpage  it really does help the show and the network.
