The winter before Captain Scott's ill-fated attempt on the South Pole, his youngest team member Apsley Cherry-Garrard (known as “Cherry”) set off across the ice in the middle of the polar night. Henrietta Hammant talks to Alok Jha about this astonishing journey and Cherry's subsequent memoir, which remains one of the most gripping works of travel and adventure writing to this day. Henrietta is an anthropologist specialising in the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration. Her research considers how this era of Antarctic history is displayed in museums. She has worked across the UK and Canada, most notably at the Polar Museum in Cambridge, and has recently submitted her PhD thesis at the University of Reading. To support this podcast and the work of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust click here To buy a copy of Cherry: A Life of Apsley Cherry-Garrard click here Season 5 of A Voyage to Antarctica is made possible by support from HX Hurtigruten Expeditions.Sound Credits: Footsteps in Snow by SoundBiterSFX - https://freesound.org/s/730914/ - License: Creative Commons 0Walking in Soft Snow.wav by Percy Duke - https://freesound.org/s/420633/ - License: Attribution 3.0Silencyo_CC_Wind Mistral_Strong_pine trees.aif by silencyo - https://freesound.org/s/81797/ - License: Creative Commons 0Heavy hailstorm with thunder by Cinetony - https://freesound.org/s/620489/ - License: Creative Commons 0Short Hailstorm.wav by Benboncan - https://freesound.org/s/63802/ - License: Attribution 4.0 Hosted on Acast. Upset stomach? Feeling liverish? Is something obstructing you from your normal functions? It might be a microscopic Nazi U-boat exploring your nether regions. How will you survive? Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, archives, and to buy my books, such as Sisyphus, Eat Your Heart Out, available in paperback and ebook from Amazon. What folk remedy settles an upset stomach? This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. Doktor Goren's surname is taken from a minor character from the Springbok Radio drama Vale of Darkness, written by Ron Evans. I can't find info about when it was originally broadcast, but you can listen to the series from the Internet Archive or other sources on the web.https://archive.org/details/vale-of-darkness-19xx-xx-xx-26/Vale_of_Darkness_19xx-xx-xx_01.mp32. For the purposes of crossover with Melinda's stories about fairy munchkins, hamquatches, reptilibugs and the pets of our extended family, let's assume Fritz is actually my sister-in-law's dog playing the trombone. He's not a Nazi, just playing a part.3. When I was searching for a “sad trombone” on freesound dot org, I found 91 sound trombone samples stretched and modified by user PhonosUPF. The weird dramatic sound near the end of the episode is actually two of those trombone sounds combined.Credits:The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950) and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. "The Bowmen" / "Out of the Earth" by Arthur Machen

In 1914 Arthur Machen published “The Bowmen”, a patriotic supernatural tale intended to boost the morale of British soldiers fighting in the trenches and those at home who had heard reports of the horrors of warfare. However, much to his consternation, Machen's story was taken as fact by a public who desperately wanted to believe and spawned the legend of The Angels of Mons. His 1915 short story “Out of the Earth” deals with the aftermath of “The Bowmen” controversy, exploring the ways that myths and stories can take on a life of their own by examining some peculiar happenings along part of the Welsh coast. This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “The Bowmen” by Arthur Machen (1914) and “Out of the Earth” by Arthur Machen (1915). You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to a forthcoming episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem. CREATOR'S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that's what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. There are many narrators who don't do this and they will be delighted to meet you. I try to do different voices just because I think it helps differentiate between characters when you're listening. Apologies if I don't nail every accent. You knew what I was going for, and at least I gave you a laugh. Apologies if I accidentally used a WW2 gun for my WW1 sound effects. Apologies if I said some of the Welsh things wrong. It's hard, you know. The stories I read on this channel come from another time, many decades ago. If some of the ideas, beliefs, sentiments, and language upsets you, try and forgive them…as you will expect to be forgiven by the people judging you ten years from now.

The piece is an evocative soundscape that mixes history and memory in an act of defiance against media manipulation and the suppression of human voices in depictions of war. Liz, is currently pursuing her Master's degree at Macquarie University in Australia and works as a visual designer in Sydney, with a focus on graphic design, layout design, film, and video production. Social media platforms make more decisions about free speech every minute than the Supreme Court has made in more than two hundred years. So the values and systems adopted by these Corporate Speech Overlords matter a lot.  Guests Nicole Wong—former Google VP and Twitter Exec—and Alex Stamos—Director of the Stanford Internet Observatory and former Facebook Chief Security Officer—tell the story of how Big Tech stumbled its way through developing systems of speech regulation, from the early laissez-faire days to the controversies of today. Sporadic Phantoms are joined by Nicole, Hedrick Chapman, and Richard Dolon in our new studio to thoroughly explain the connections between Elizabeth Li, Kyle Stephenson, and Sharethetruth, how they affected The Sharing, and what exactly was going on during Kyle's livestream. What started in suspicion and paranoia ends in teamwork and togetherness. And a new chapter of the investigation opens.
