Pacifist. Humanitarian. Whistleblower. From humble roots growing up in Cornwall, Emily Hobhouse went on to challenge the societal issues of her day and expose the horrors of British concentration camps during the Second Anglo-Boer War. Speaking to Emily Briffett, biographer Elsabé Brits uncovers the story of a woman who was branded a 'traitor' for defying the British establishment, but saved thousands of Boer women and children. Machinery is Power is EvilWriting to his son Michael in the RAF:[here is] the tragedy and despair of all machinery laid bare. Unlike art which is content to create a new secondary world in the mind, it attempts to actualize desire, and so to create power in this World; and that cannot really be done with any real satisfaction. Labour-saving machinery only creates endless and worse labour. And in addition to this fundamental disability of a creature, is added the Fall, which makes our devices not only fail of their desire but turn to new and horrible evil. Should We Unquestionably Obey The Government? - 11:8:24, 8.28 PM

Reason for Truth

Are Christians biblically commanded to ALWAYS DO EVERYTHING the government tells them to do? What about when going to war? I am not confusing the WW2 time period with today. These are two different times in history, two different generations, which very different moral values. That being said, the principle of biblical moral grounds for obeying government is just the same. It seems that World War II was the last war that I see as definitively morally justified to warrant war. War leads to death and destruction on all sides in order to squelch evil. Today, I am going to show you that for the most part, we are to follow the government, but the Bible is clear that we are to avoid EXTREME PATRIOTISM as well. What is "Extreme Patriotism"? In light of Romans 13:1 as a primary verse which says, "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgement." (There is also Romans 13:3-13:5 which speak further to the issue.)But, there is more to God's position on the ethics and morality of listening to government when we look at the Bible. For example, just because a government (often an immoral or biblically immorally run government) commands (Christians to) war, doesn't mean the that war is justifiable biblically. As such, we as individual Christians act rightly/biblically when we critically analyze the WHY behind THAT we are to go to war. After all, war entails death, destruction, injury and mental scars that last a lifetime. As such, we are called to analyze government mandates with a biblical worldview and act rightly in light of what God says. And if a godless government asks Christians to fight a biblically immoral war and kill or harm other human beings, we are called as Christians to analyze that war and our level of involvement in military service. This is a touchy subject and I am VERY patriotic. That said, I serve God before I serve any government or human leader(s). I pray this episode brings more clarity than it does emotion. The performance of Sir Ben Kingley as this small, meek person with no position in government taking on the British in order to get India its sovereignty is absolutely remarkable. However, is that performance enough to make this three hour biopic brilliant on every other level. Earlier histories of the Cold War haven't exactly been charitable toward the peace activists and pacifists who led peace initiatives. Pacifists in the United States were either simplistic and naïve, or they were fellow travelers of the Soviet Union. Peace proposals coming from the Soviet Union were nothing more than propaganda. Activists in Europe, meanwhile, were treated as a kind of curiosity in the broader Cold War, but their role was to highlight the growing tensions between the superpowers. This left an important question unanswered: what exactly was the significance of this peace activism that emerged after 1945? Did it amount to anything? Petra Goedde's The Politics of Peace: A Global Cold War History (Oxford University Press, 2019) fills in the important history of peace movements during the Cold War. Goedde discusses the different movements that existed in the United States and Europe from 1945 until the early 1970s. She looks at different facets of these peace movements. Much of it is centered on opposition to nuclear weapons, but Goedde's analysis extends into the realm of decolonization, environmentalism, and gender. She concludes by noting some of the long-term impacts of peace activism, including the formation of the Green Party in Germany and the adoption of certain policies by foreign policy realists such as Richard Nixon. Betsy Aaron is living with stage 4 stomach cancer. She is a writer and has recently started to share her observations, information, and attitude to living peacefully with, rather than waging war on cancer. She and Sara talk about the language the medical industry uses, and that we are too used to: “Fighting it”, “Killing the cells”, “Battling” and knows for her these words weren't working. They talk about Betsy's realization that this “fighting” takes the wrong kind of energy and puts blame on someone who isn't conquering the disease, thinking they aren't battling the right way or enough. Betsy takes an active part in decision making with her medical team and believes it's important to make decisions based on how you feel, what your body needs and how to go about it. Betsy has done well with not using her energy for fighting. She has reduced her cancer by a lot. Though it doesn't go away, she knows that an inner peace and peaceful co-existence in her body and spirit really helps her.  One of Betsy's recent projects includes her 20-episode video series, “A Pacifist's Guide to Living with Cancer,” now on YouTube. The Deadliest Pacifist in US History - Alvin York | Testicular Fortitude

In the heart of the maelstrom that was World War I, amidst the chaos of battlefields and the deafening roars of machine guns, a most unexpected hero emerged—an unassuming man named Alvin York. York's journey was not one of conventional heroism; rather, it was a saga of unwavering courage, unyielding faith, and a relentless commitment to a higher calling. Testicular Fortitude is presented by Haines Knives - http://hainesknives.com/manlihood Enter to win an EDC by Haines Knives here: http:manlihood.com/contests York has been called “The Deadliest Pacifist in US History.” After he single-handedly captured 132 enemy soldiers, they asked him how he did it. He said, "I surrounded them." Alvin York's testicular fortitude was in his strategic brilliance that completely went against all of the conventional norms of warfare. He was born in a log cabin near the Tennessee-Kentucky border in 1887, grew up in a family sustained by subsistence farming and hunting.  In 1915, he had an experience with God, and became a devout Christian As World War I engulfed the world, York, now a man of profound faith, sought conscientious objector status upon being drafted.  That pacifist position was challenged though, when he encountered Luke 22:36  "He who hath no sword, let him sell his cloak and buy one." Guided by those words from Jesus, York abandoned his initial stance and enlisted in the U.S. Army's 82nd Infantry Division. The crucible of York's heroism unfolded on October 8, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, the final Allied push against German forces. Tasked with seizing German-held positions, York's battalion was under fire - a German machine-gun nest rained bullets upon them. As chaos ensued and the unit's numbers dwindled, York was thrust to the forefront, commanding a squad of merely 17 men. Undeterred by the odds, York, feeling a divine calling, advanced alone against the machine-gun position. Drawing upon his sharpshooting skills cultivated during Tennessee Turkey hunting days, he systematically neutralized the enemy. The undergrowth around him ablaze with gunfire, York's determination and marksmanship cut through the chaos, with lethal precision. Ammo was running short. Six Germans charged him with bayonettes, and with only seven shots, he took out all six. As he approached the German commanding officer, the tide of the battle irreversibly turned. Faced with the inevitable, the officer surrendered his entire unit, a total of 132 men, in exchange for his life. York's story reverberated far beyond the battlefield. Lauded as "the war's biggest hero" by The New York Times and hailed by General John J. Pershing as "the greatest civilian soldier" of World War I, York returned home to a hero's welcome. He leveraged his fame to found a school for underprivileged children, the York Industrial Institute. In 1941, Hollywood immortalized his bravery in the movie "Sergeant York," starring Gary Cooper.  When York died in 1964, President Lyndon Johnson eulogized him as "a symbol of American courage and sacrifice," embodying "the gallantry of American fighting men and their sacrifices on behalf of freedom." Alvin York, A humble man propelled by faith and armed with unyielding determination, became a symbol of courage, defying expectations and inspiring generations.  His name echoes as a testament to the enduring power of faith, courage, and commitment on the battlefield. Nobody would have thought that the United States could fight in a world war in 1938, let alone be a major reason for victory. That year, it was so politically isolationist and pacifist that its defense forces were smaller than Portugal's, and Charles Lindbergh was so forceful in his public praise of Nazi air power that Göring decorated him with the German. But while this was going on, Franklin Roosevelt ordered the federal government to spark a dramatic expansion in domestic airplane production, and this minor effort — three years before Pearl Harbor — would in time become the arsenal of democracy, the full-throttle unleashing of American enterprise that was the secret weapon for victory in World War II. Combined with Roosevelt's public fight with Lindbergh -- known as the Great Debate — victory at land and sea and air across the globe began at home in America. Today's guest is Craig Nelson, author of “V is for Victory: Franklin Roosevelt's American Revolution and the Triumph of World War II.” Revealing an era when Detroit was Silicon Valley, Ford was Apple, and Sears Roebuck was Amazon, we see how during the war years, America built 2.5 million trucks, 500k jeeps, 286k aircraft, 86k tanks, and 2.6 million machine guns. More importantly, Roosevelt said that it wasn't these weapons that were the real arsenal of democracy, but the American people themselves. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3101278/advertisement

Lo! Peninsula - Super Glue (Cover) from the 2023 self-released album The Resurrection Of The Princess Of Woe And Her Vampire Hound Posse. Lo! Peninsula is a shoegaze/dreampop trio from Imphal, India that first caught the ears of KEXP's John Richards and his producer Owen Murphy back in 2018 with their debut full-length AKA Lo Peninsula. Murphy interviewed the band that year about making music in a conflict-torn area and their DIY recording process. Since then, they've only released less than a handful of singles but recently returned with “Super Glue.” The song is a cover of Indian noise-rockers Hoirong's 2013 original and appears on a covers album made in celebration of the tenth anniversary of Hoirong's debut album The Reincarnation of The Princess of Woe and Her Vampire Hound Posse. Titled The Resurrection of The Princess of Woe and Her Vampire Hound Posse, the album sees contributions from Indian bands like Pacifist, Disco Puppet, Mr. INDIA, and Audrey. Hoirong's version of “Super Glue” is a lo-fi affair with screeching warbles and fuzzed-out guitars while frontman Kamal Singh melodramatically sings, “Slowly comes an asshole and he looks so good /Slowly you become my menstruation /Funny how you try to be the super glue.” The original is so good that it's a nerve-wracking undertaking to cover. Instead of trying to mimic, Lo! Peninsula wraps the song in a sheeny haze, taking “Super Glue” to new heights. Watch the video for Lo! Peninsula's 2021 single “Kintsugi” and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
