My newsletter: https://thelongstory.substack.com/ The Dispatch was launched in 2020 with a pretty straightforward thesis: that people would pay for quality, fact-based journalism. It certainly had a partisan lean – it was co-founded by conservative journalists Jonah Goldberg and Steve Hayes after all – but it steered clear of the wholesale rejection of reality that's rampant in most pro-Trump media. Flash forward to 2025, and that thesis has been vindicated. It recently crossed 45,000 paid subscribers without the help of huge VC investors. Now, it plans to diversify its revenue streams, and to accomplish that it brought on Mike Rothman, a longtime media veteran who helped build companies like Thrillist and Fatherly. In a recent interview, Mike walked through his decision to join The Dispatch, what kind of advertising he wants to sell, and why brands are suddenly interested again in sponsoring politics media.
Zunzi's + Zunzibar CEO Chris Smith joins QSR editorial director Danny Klein to discuss the journey behind the fast-casual restaurant and beach bar concept Smith grew from its roots in Savannah to multiple locations across Georgia and South Carolina. He acquired the brand in 2014 and is now preparing for significant growth. Under Smith's leadership, Zunzi's has earned accolades like “The 33 Best Sandwiches in America” by Thrillist and Yelp's “Top Places to Drink” in Savannah. What makes Smith's journey unique is his business strategy, which combines Zunzi's purpose into every aspect of the culture and expansion strategy.
Being a pilot has its perks — but it might cost you. Beards are barred on most major airlines, meaning pilots may have to abandon their signature scruffy look when reporting to the cockpit. While it isn't an official policy enforced by the Federal Aviation Administration, a spokesperson told Thrillist that the facial hair may impact safety. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Monday, Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer who won the presidency in the wake of the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War, endured humbling defeat after one tumultuous term and then redefined life after the White House as a global humanitarian, has died. He was 100 years old. And elsewhere, newly released video of a fatal New York prison beating shows correctional officers repeatedly pummeling a handcuffed man, striking him in the chest with a shoe, and lifting him by the neck and dropping him.

On today's episode of Startup to Storefront, we're joined by Brianda, founder of The New Bar. Growing up on Catalina Island, alcohol was a common part of social gatherings with friends and family—until a life-changing moment altered that for Brianda. When her father was nearly lost to a debilitating autoimmune disease, she sought new ways to foster the same close family connections—this time without alcohol. Brianda launched The New Bar in Venice Beach in the summer of 2022, creating a platform that connects people to nonalcoholic drinks and alternatives. Her mission? To prove that socializing doesn't need to revolve around alcohol. By 2023, The New Bar became the official alcohol-free partner at Coachella, and in 2024, Brianda tripled her footprint with new locations in West Hollywood and San Francisco. She also expanded her partnership with Golden Voice to bring nonalcoholic drinks to Stagecoach. Featured in Forbes, Adweek, Thrillist, Eater, and The Guardian, Brianda is a trailblazer in the alcohol-free movement. On this week's episode, you'll learn how Brianda turned a personal journey into a thriving business, leaving the tech industry to create a platform for non-alcoholic alternatives. She shares how she's changing perceptions around non-alcoholic drinks by making them exciting and accessible, securing partnerships with major events like Coachella. You'll also hear about the life-changing benefits of sober months and how Brianda expanded The New Bar into multiple locations while influencing the entertainment and hospitality industries.

Some of the most famous caves date back to Roman times and have served mankind honorably through the centuries - for many purposes in addition to storing wine. Why do we care? The 1950s to the 1990s are often dubbed as the cocktail's Dark Ages where drinks like Long Island Iced Teas and Midori Sours reined supreme. The drinks from this time are often reviled or ridiculed, but they made important contributions to cocktail history, too. Today I am joined by Amanda Wilbanks! Although she grew up in an Appalachian family where recipes were traded like heirloom plant cuttings, Amanda never envisioned herself as the CEO of one of America's premier pie companies. Her legacy of delicious Southern baking became a career in 2011, when her mother-in-law taught her how to make an incomparable, melt-in-your-mouth, all-butter pie crust. Within a few months, baking turned from a hobby into an obsession, and Amanda's husband - whose waistline was rapidly expanding - demanded she either stop baking or start selling her delicious creations. As a result, Amanda launched Southern Baked Pie Company in 2012 with nothing but $400, a knockout pie crust recipe, and a dream to share the joy of fresh-baked pie with the world.Today, that dream is a reality with four retail locations across North Georgia and Metro Atlanta and thousands of pies shipped nationwide every day. Together with her dedicated team of bakers, Amanda has created a gourmet selection of sweet and savory pies, and the world has taken notice. Since the doors opened ten years ago, Southern Baked Pie has garnered features on Oprah's Favorite Things, The Today Show, Southern Living Magazine, Food Network, and more! Named one of the best pie shops in America by Thrillist and Mashed, Southern Baked proudly ships elegant, handmade pies nationwide so that everyone can celebrate life's special occasions, big and small, with pie.Amanda approaches every role in her life with passion and joy. JW Wiseman of Curious Elixirs is a bonafide audience whisperer. After working as an early marketing hire at the media startup Thrillist, he went on to found a growth marketing firm. That experience unlocked the key audience expansion strategies he's employed at his cult-y non-alcoholic RTD brand, Curious Elixirs. This is a brand you won't find on store shelves. It's nearly all DTC subscriptions, with a bit of prestige on-premise placements (like the Blue Note jazz club in NYC). Curious Elixirs was audience-driven from the get-go. JW launched the brand on Kickstarter — not because he needed the money, but rather as a smart tactic to grow community and demand around the product. Since launching in 2015, the brand has been laser-focused on its subscription strategy and customer loyalty, and now serves millions of consumers a year. The brand's growth has been driven by word of mouth in sober curious communities, and by really effective targeting on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Yes, social channels are STILL performing very well for Curious Elixirs. So much so that the brand is up 40% in sales year over year. Want some tips from Curious Elixirs' wildly successful playbook? In this episode, JW discusses: - How to grow — and sustain! — a community around your brand - Strategies for building word-of-mouth referral - How to build a successful DTC subscription business in today's marketp - Why video — and UGC content specifically — should be the backbone of your social strategy - Low-cost, IRL customer events and activations - Why customer loyalty is the No. 1 KPI you should pay attention to And more! Episode 332 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Ben Lerer, Managing Partner of Lerer Hippeau. The tech scene in New York City has come a very, very long way over the past 14 or 15 years. A lot of that transformation and growth was due to access to early-stage capital which wasn't prevalent back then, but Lerer Hippeau was a key element to the foundation of its success as a seed stage investor. The firm was an early investor in many consumer brands that you recognize as they have all been very successful like Allbirds, Casper, Warby Parker, BuzzFeed, Mirror, Venmo, and many more. Its reputation was built on these consumer breakouts, but ultimately the firm is category agnostic investing equally across the enterprise and consumer landscapes. For example, take a look at two of their most recent investments, which are Boston companies, 10Beauty (consumer robotics for manicures) and Tollbit (content monetization in the era of AI), which we talk about in details for this podcast. Ben is now a fulltime VC after founding and running Thrillist that scaled and then added other digital media brands under its umbrella as Group Nine Media, which was acquired by Vox Media. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * Ben's thoughts on the market and if now is the ideal time to start a company. * The inspiration behind Thrillist, plus lots of stories and lessons learned around the full lifecycle and evolution of the company to Group Nine Media and acquisition by Vox. * Advice for entrepreneurs on building a startup media company in today's world. * How Lerer Hippeau came to fruition and what they are targeting for investments, plus why he considers himself a talent driven investor versus a thesis driven investor. * And so much more.

Located in Thomas, the business will offer a unique gaming and educational opportunity for customers, providing safe and fun social activities to locals and tourists alike. The shop also will provide board and trading card games for sale, offer opportunities to rent and play games before purchasing them, and space to rent tables for game playing. “Businesses like The Adventure Guild Game Shop contribute to both business prosperity and the revival of small towns with engaging activities,” said Andy Zulauf, Executive Director at the West Virginia Jobs Investment Trust. “WVCAP funding can help turn historic buildings, that would otherwise go unused, into hubs of excitement and community interaction.” Visit www.theadventureguildgameshop.com to learn more. Emma is the bestselling author of six novels — including All Adults Here, The Vacationers, Modern Lovers, and Laura Lamont's Life in Pictures — the short story collection Other People We Married. Today we're talking about the weapon we seem to talk about after every mass shooting in the United States: the AR-15. The AR-15 is the most popular rifle on the consumer market. An estimated 1 in 20 American adults owns at least one. But, it wasn't always this way. In fact, the AR-15's rise in popularity is pretty recent, and when the gun first became available to consumers, it was something of a black sheep. On the show today, Washington Post reporter Todd Frankel walks us through how the AR-15 went from military weapon to consumer product, the marketing that boosted its appeal and what the AR-15 signifies to a country plagued by gun violence. In the News Fix: Finland is the newest member of NATO. We'll get into what that means for Russia's war in Ukraine. And, some news you can use: There are significant delays for passport processing at the State Department. If you're planning an international trip, renew your passport ASAP! Later, one listener shares a piece of trivia about cherry blossom trees in Tokyo. Plus, another listener sent us a stunning photo of cherry blossoms in Seattle. And, this week’s answer to the Make Me Smart question comes from NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, commander of the Artemis II mission to the moon. Here’s everything we talked about today: “How the AR-15 became a powerful political, cultural symbol in America” from The Washington Post “Analysis | Decades of marketing reinvented the AR-15 into a top-selling firearm” from The Washington Post “Nashville attack renews calls for assault weapons ban – data shows there were fewer mass shooting deaths during an earlier 10-year prohibition” from The Conversation “The Rifle That Ruined America” from The Atlantic “Hoping to Travel Abroad? Don't Put Off Your Passport Application.” from The New York Times “Passport Processing Times Just Increased Due to Summer Travel Demand” from Thrillist “Finland joins NATO in major blow to Russia over Ukraine war” from AP News “Why did Sanna Marin lose Finland's election?” from The Guardian What have you been wrong about lately? We want to hear it. Leave us a voice message at 508-U-B-SMART, and your submission may be featured in a future episode.
