In this episode, Mikey and Aaron discuss chapter 3 in Matthew Bingham's book "A Heart Aflame for God." What role did Scripture reading play in the devotional lives of the Protestant Reformers and their churches? How should we think about modern "issues" like "quiet time"? Is there anything we can learn from faithful Christians who have gone before us?

Walking in the Spirit is a vibrant life—messy and beautiful. That's the life we're called to but we often return to the law or rules because they are comfortable. Why would anyone do that? Because, the trail into the glorious future God desires to walk with us is unknown and frightening. Today, we want to remember that the greatest joys in our life usually begin just a few steps beyond our comfort zone.

In this message, "Tongues Aflame," Duane Fischer explores the powerful message of James 3:1-12 regarding the tongue. He highlights that controlling our speech is a crucial indicator of true spirituality, likening the tongue's influence to a small bit controlling a large horse or a small rudder steering a huge ship. The message calls for thoughtful, consistent, and honest speech [17:16] that uplifts and honors Christ, cautioning against impulsive, critical, or destructive words that can cause harm.

Mon. Oct. 13: 1) Pluto (The Transformer) turns Direct in AquariusThere's a shift from inner shadow excavation to outer empowerment. In Aquarius, the Transformer reanimates collective renewal — systems, technologies, and communities are being reborn. You may feel the tectonic plates of your psyche moving: what inner underworld work have you done since May that now wants to express in service of the greater good?Reflection Question:What truth about your power or your purpose is now ready to move from hidden depth into active expression?2) Venus (The Relational One) enters LibraTime to reimagine relationships not as compromise but as creative co-weaving. It's a cycle for listening with your whole being, for recalibrating the harmony between giving and receiving.Reflection Question:Where can you restore balance or beauty in how you meet the “other,” whether that's a person, project, or part of yourself?3) Venus opposes Neptune (The Dreamer)The Dreamer stirs visions of unconditional love and spiritual union, yet the Relational One seeks clarity and integrity. Watch for projections or disillusionment that can dissolve boundaries — or open portals to transcendent compassion.Reflection Question:How can you stay heart-open without losing the clarity of your own truth?Tuesday, October 14: Venus trines Uranus (The Awakener) in Gemini and Pluto (The Transformer) in AquariusVenus meets two agents of radical renewal, sparking relational breakthroughs, creative reinvention, and fresh freedom in connection. Something once stagnant can shift quickly now if you allow love to evolve beyond the familiar script.Reflection Question:What new pattern of relating or creating is ready to liberate you from an outdated way of connecting?Thurs. Oct. 16: Sun (The Heroic Self) in Libra squares Jupiter (The Teacher) in CancerThe Sun's light on partnership and fairness rubs against Jupiter's instinct to nurture and protect in Cancer. This tension can amplify generosity or inflate expectations — both reveal where growth demands a rebalancing of confidence and care.Reflection Question:Where might over-giving or over-controlling be blocking true mutual growth?Fri. Oct. 17: Sun (The Heroic Self) in Libra opposes Chiron (The Wounded Healer) in AriesRelationships mirror old wounds of independence and belonging. We explore how our desire for harmony often hides ancient fears of rejection or domination. Healing happens when we can hold both self-assertion and empathy as sacred.Reflection Question: What old relational wound is asking for compassionate witnessing rather than defense or withdrawal?Sun., Oct. 19: Mercury (The Storyteller) conjunct Mars (The Warrior) in ScorpioWords pierce to the truth. This potent conjunction intensifies communication — it's surgical, passionate, and potentially confrontational. When wielded consciously, this energy cuts through illusion and fuels courageous conversations that catalyze transformation.Reflection Question:What truth needs to be spoken or written from the depth of your courage, not the edge of your anger?Podcast poem: For Presence by John O'DoSupport the showGo to Sheila's website for information for transformational resources: https://www.ontheedgesofchange.com/home-page This episode was co-created with generative AI, engaged as a soul-aligned ally in service of transformation. Since publishing his debut essay collection—Video Night in Kathmandu, featuring far-flung reportage from 10 Asian countries—in 1988, the prolific travel writer Pico Iyer has gone on to write more than a dozen books exploring themes ranging from displacement and identity to globalization and technology, as well as contribute to publications such as The New York Times, Time, and Condé Nast Traveler. Over the years, Iyer's travels have taken him to some of the world's most remote destinations—North Korea, Bhutan, and Iceland, to name a few—but it's his hundred-plus visits to a Benedictine hermitage in Big Sur, California, that form the heart of his latest book, Aflame: Learning From Silence. Connecting with his inner stillness during these various sojourns in solitude has left him wholly transformed, opening him up to discover the thrumming, ineffable joy of being truly awake to the world and wonderfully alive. On this episode of Time Sensitive, Iyer explores the purpose and joy of travel, and shares deeply moving reflections about what he finds most essential in life.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Pico Iyer[4:25] “Aflame”[4:25] “Autumn Light”[4:25] Philip Larkin[4:25] “The Art of Poetry No. 30”[7:18] Bashō[7:18] Leonard Cohen[10:21] New Camaldoli Hermitage[10:21] Post Ranch Inn [16:25] “Postmodern Tourism: A Conversation with Pico Iyer”[17:08] “The Eloquent Sounds of Silence”[21:48] “The Joy of Quiet”[31:42] “What Ping-Pong Taught Me About Life”[33:14] “Walden”[37:28] “The Open Road”[41:37] “Video Night in Kathmandu”[41:37] “The Lady and the Monk”[41:37] “Lonely Places”[41:37] The Global Soul[44:40] “In the Realm of Jet Lag”[52:35] “Culture: The Leading Hotels of the World”[55:17] Potala Palace[55:17] Naoshima, Japan[55:17] Teshima, Japan[55:17] Narita, Japan[01:00:43] “The Half Known Life”[01:10:10] “No Time”

Martyn Lloyd-Jones Sermon Podcast

Luke 24:13-35 — In this sermon preached at the Sunday morning service on August 27, 1967 to Seventh Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones expounds on the encounter between the risen Christ and two disciples on the road to Emmaus. He highlights their initial state of sadness and dejection, despite the resurrection having already occurred. This, he argues, mirrors the condition of many Christians and churches today who, though possessing the truth, live as though defeated. The remedy lies in hearts set aflame by the risen Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. When Christians live in light of the resurrection, with burning zeal and enthusiasm, they will be filled with an infectious and indelible joy that draws others to the gospel. The church must move from sad and slow hearts to burning hearts if it is to truly live out its calling. *Special note on Dr. Lloyd-Jones's Preaching Method During his ministry, it was Dr. Lloyd-Jones's practice to preach sermons geared towards the edification of believers at the Sunday morning service and sermons geared towards the evangelism of unbelievers at the Sunday evening service. This sermon serves as a good example of a message geared towards believers, whereas its counterpart from the evening service (to be released next week) an example geared towards unbelievers. This method has been referred to half-jokingly by contemporaries as "Saints in the morning, Sinners at night!" However, it must be noted that this practice did not mean that within Dr Lloyd-Jones's sermons edification and evangelism were mutually exclusive. There would be plenty within each sermon to feed and convict both believers and unbelievers alike.

After his California home burned in a wildfire, acclaimed author and travel writer Pico Iyer retreated to a remote monastery in Big Sur. There, he discovered the power of solitude and stillness to help process loss and cope with uncertainty. In his new book, “Aflame,” Iyer writes about his frequent visits to the monastery over the following three decades, always finding joy and renewal in the “silence and emptiness and light”… and lack of screens. We'll talk with Iyer about the book, and why his inner journeys mean more to him than his far-flung trips across the globe. Guests: Pico Iyer, journalist and author, "Aflame"

Writer Pico Iyer lost everything in a 1990 California wildfire. After being rendered homeless and sleeping on a friend's floor, he was told about a Benedictine monastery. His time spent in silence on retreat there changed him both as a person and as a writer. He spoke with Terry Gross about his new memoir about the experience, Aflame.
