On August 1, 2026, detectives believe 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci deliberately started the Old Trails Fire in North Spokane County.  His alleged actions burned more than 3,200 acres and destroyed 694 homes.  Court documents say Farinacci admitted to starting that fire and more than 20 others because he finds fire "powerful" and "beautiful."  He's currently facing five counts of first-degree arson as detectives continue to investigate other unsolved crimes.  In this episode, we dig into the case against him and what could come next.

A west Belfast Accountant whose business was destroyed in an arson attack is blaming associates of a convicted death driver. Tim ‘Timo' Molloy says people close to Martin Olali Jnr, who is awaiting sentencing for mowing down a pedestrian and his pet dog in a hit-and-run, are to blame. The wildland firefighting community is mourning again. Nate Matthews, 43, a 10-year veteran from Lincoln, Nebraska, has died from burn injuries suffered during the June 27 burnover on the Utah-Colorado border — making him the fourth firefighter killed in the same incident. Three other crew members died at the scene, and a fifth remains hospitalized. The Knowles Fire has since been overtaken by the Snyder Fire.  Then, we turn to a local arson case: a judge will consider Tuesday whether to grant bail to a West Jordan man accused of setting the Timp Fire that evacuated the Timpooneke Campground in American Fork Canyon. Once again, Jewish communities in Israel came under attack on Shabbat as jihadi arsonists targeted the community of Chavat Gilad in Samaria (Shomron). Families were forced to evacuate during the holy day as flames spread, with reports indicating that around 30 homes and businesses were destroyed. In this episode, Rabbi Marc Katz sits down with historian Jeffrey Marx to discuss his fascinating book Jewish Firebugs: Arson and Antisemitism from the Civil War to World War I (NYU Press, 2026), which uncovers a little-known chapter in the history of American antisemitism. In the decades after the American Civil War, major insurance companies instructed agents to deny fire insurance to Jewish customers, claiming they were uniquely prone to arson. That accusation quickly spread beyond the insurance industry, finding its way into newspapers, cartoons, vaudeville, popular songs, and silent films, helping to cement the image of the "Jewish firebug" in the American imagination. Drawing on fire department records, insurance files, trial transcripts, newspapers, and other archival sources, Marx untangles the complicated relationship between stereotype and reality. Episode 119 John Stuart and James Finch finally stand trial for the Whiskey Au Go Go firebombing—but this is no ordinary murder trial. As prosecutors build their case around disputed confessions, jailhouse informants, and weeks of alleged extortion threats, Stuart repeatedly sabotages the proceedings by swallowing homemade spring-loaded wire devices that send him into emergency surgery.
