If past practice is any guide, Chinese dictator Xi Jinping's state visit to North Korea yesterday afforded an opportunity for more  “strategic arson” aimed at distracting the United States from his increasing preparations for acquiring Taiwan via force if coercive pressure and/or elections don't have that effect. That could entail a manufactured ratcheting up of tensions with South Korea now controlled by another of Xi's Communist allies, President Lee Jae-Myung. He's long wanted to remove U.S. forces from the peninsula and would probably happily play along with a bit of PRC-directed theater to do so to avert a Potemkin crisis. Another ominous possibility is that Xi covertly directed Kim to join him in rearming Iran, building on their Chinese-approved collaboration on nuclear weapons by transferring one or more of them from Kim's burgeoning arsenal to Tehran.   Brace for impact. Episode 114 In March 1973, a firebomb ripped through Brisbane's Whisky Au Go Go nightclub, killing 15 people and injuring many more in one of Australia's deadliest nightclub fires. But according to one man, the tragedy wasn't a surprise. Months before the fire, career criminal John Stuart had been warning police, reporters, and nightclub owners that organized crime was planning a series of nightclub firebombings. First an empty club. Then a crowded one. Most dismissed the warnings as the paranoid ramblings of a convicted criminal. Then an empty nightclub called the Torinos was firebombed. Less than two weeks later, the Whisky Au Go Go burned. In Part 1 of this series, we examine the Brisbane nightclub scene of the early 1970s, the layout and fire safety issues inside the Whisky Au Go Go, the events of the March 8, 1973 fire, and the disturbing warnings that suddenly made investigators ask one question: How did John Stuart know? Petty refused to move away. Instead, he rebuilt on the same plot of land and channeled his trauma into a song of defiance. The message of resilience in the face of adversity became a universal mantra for overcoming any struggle.     Maybe like me you've acted against your own better wisdom, saying 'yes' instead of 'no', going along to get along, or something else. You know what I'm talking about. Maybe like me you finally figured out a better way to live. We've got just one life. In a world that keeps pushing us around we stand our ground, we won't back down! Today, Chinese emperor Xi Jinping accorded his vassal, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, the same red-carpet treatment Donald Trump got last week. Despite assertions that the President's pomp-and-circumstance was evidence of respect that offset Xi's several affronts and otherwise aggressive attitude, the message is clear: China's ruler is actually an enemy.  That reality was central to a PresentDangerChina.org webinar on Monday which critically examined last week's Beijing summit and its outcomes. Our experts agreed that Xi's regime is in acute political, economic and strategic difficulty, if not extremis, and that Mr. Trump has considerable leverage. But that can translate into heightened danger.  That's especially the case if the Xi-Putin meeting fits a pattern of such summits serving as preludes to joint “strategic arson.” If Xi feels emboldened to act against Taiwan, giving Russia its marching orders would be a precursor.  Watch this space. In June 1998, eight year old Robbie Middleton was attacked in the woods behind his Texas neighborhood,. He was then doused in gasoline, and set on fire in what investigators would later describe as one of the most horrifying attacks they had ever seen. Burned over nearly 99 percent of his body, Robbie somehow survived and spent the next thirteen years enduring more than 150 surgeries while the person accused of attacking him remained free. Then just before his death in 2011, Robbie gave a final videotaped statement identifying the person who was responsible and revealed information that changed the entire direction of the case. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 7th study session on Dr. Colin Anthony Beckles' PanAfrican Sites of Resistance: Black Bookstores and The Struggle To Re-Present Black Identity. This 1995 dissertation is the first time in the illustrious 14 year history of The Katherine Massey Book Club that we will read a non-book. Dr. Beckles conducted an extraordinary amount of research and produced several reports documenting the import of black bookstores and the intense Racism targeting them around the world. Having just completed Char Adams' Black-Owned: The Revolutionary Life of the Black Bookstore, Gus concluded that text willfully excluded Dr. Frances Cress Welsing and Neely Fuller Jr. to stress anti-sexual behavior and to practice black misandry. Reading Dr. Beckles' - who is briefly mentioned in Adams' work, dissertation is the corrective to Black-Owned. Last week, Dr. Beckles cited the works of Dr. Frances Cress Welsing among other black authors who lectured at and penned books to be sold at black bookstores. Apparently, black bookstores in Jamaica blasted Bob Marley alongside Dr. Welsing on their loudspeakers. We also learned about the widespread and international repression against these locations of counter-racism literature.
