Carp, Professor of History at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center | The Great New York Fire of 1776: A Lost Story of the American Revolution Following defeat at Long Island, Washington's forces escaped to Manhattan. The British Howe brothers hesitated, offering pardons and hoping for reconciliation. The debate over burning intensified: General Nathanael Greene advocated burning (September 5), but Congress President John Hancock ordered Washington to prevent it (September 6). Washington later confessed this refusal was a "terrible error," as burning would have deprived the British of critical winter quarters. Although Americans publicly blamed the British, rebels had previously burned Norfolk, Virginia. Loyalists circulated rumors that rebels planned arson.

One version suggests an accidental fire started by "careless drunkards" in a tavern. However, British observers on warships reported multiple, relatively simultaneous points of ignition (up to 20 points), strongly suggesting rebel saboteurs. Civilian governance had deteriorated; the fire chief feared rebel arson. Firefighting efforts were hindered because the city's bells had been removed for cannons, and equipment was in disarray.

Carp, Professor of History at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center | The Great New York Fire of 1776: A Lost Story of the American Revolution Three Continental captains were circumstantially linked to the arson: Amos Fellows (died in prison, possibly caught with incendiary materials), Abraham Van Dyck (accused of planning the fire by the British, later recommended for a captaincy by Washington), and Abraham Patten (spy who confessed on the gallows in 1777 to setting the fire). Following Patten's death, Washington eulogized him, and Congress awarded funds to his widow, suggesting recognition for his services. Washington never admitted ordering the fire but thought it beneficial, stating "Providence or some good honest fellow has done what we didn't think to do for ourselves."

On September 29, 2025, authorities had a press conference where they discussed the latest developments in an infamous quadruple murder — the yogurt shop murders — in Austin, Texas. Detective Daniel Jackson of the Austin Police Department mentioned but did not name a 1998 cold case homicide that occurred in Kentucky that they linked to Robert Eugene Brashers.On December 6, 1991, Robert Eugene Brashers is believed to have bound, sexually assaulted, and murdered 17-year-old Jennifer Harbison, 15-year-old Sarah Harbison, 17-year-old Eliza Thomas, and 13-year-old Amy Ayers. Their bodies were found in the burning I Can't Believe It's Yogurt! shop in Austin, Texas. Police also found evidence from a .380 firearm linked to Brashers. Evidence from that same gun also ties into the 1998 Kentucky case.On November 6, 1998, somebody murdered 43-year-old Linda Rutledge. She was killed in her parents' business, the Nixon Hearing Aid Center, shot multiple times. Then the building was set on fire. A sense of relief and justice was palpable at the High Court in Wellington today as the man who lit the fatal Loafers Lodge fire was convicted of murder. But it was underscored by incredible heartache. A jury of 10 were unanimous in finding 50-year-old Esarona Lologa guilty of five counts of murder, and one of arson, for setting the Wellington hostel alight in 2023. Five people died in the deadly blaze: Michael Wahrlich, Melvin Parun, Peter O'Sullivan, Kenneth Barnard and Liam Hockings. Lauren Crimp reports.

This is A Slow Burn by Chuck Brownman.About ArsonEpisode 16, First Reports are Rarely Right, was a different kind of arson story. In the episode, we talked the case of serial arsonist, Thomas Sweatt. Today, I thought we'd get a little more technical. An article published back in June 1982 in Fire and Arson Investigator, Volume 32 Issue 4, classified arson motives based on a sample of 139 cases in New York City. The following comes directly from the article's abstract and is rearranged to be easier to follow:Types of arson motives identified are: (1) pyromania (10.1 percent) The pyro firesetter usually sets the fire in an occupied multiple dwelling at night in a public portion of the building, usually on the floor and using a flammable liquid for one fire rather than multiple fires.(2) revenge (52.9 percent) The revenge firesetter, who often threatens arson prior to the act, will focus on the residence or a building associated with the targeted victim. Flammable liquid is used to start one or multiple fires.(3) vandalism (12.3 percent) The vandal arsonist targets occupied multiple dwellings as well as commercial buildings, schools, jails, churches, and abandoned buildings. Night is the favorite time and the first floor is preferred for starting the fire.(4) insurance fraud (6.55 percent) Arson for insurance is obviously committed on insured property, and the fire is designed to provide complete devastation.(5) welfare fraud (6.55 percent) Welfare fraud fires are usually set in the residence of the perpetrator after all valuable property has been removed, and the crime concealment arsonist is usually concealing a burglary, and existing paper at one spot on the floor is generally used.(6) the psycho firesetter (8.7 percent) The psycho arsonist usually sets the fire in his own residence and customarily starts one small fire without the use of an accelerant.(7) crime concealment (2.9 percent) Fires are set to destroy evidence of other crimes, such as theft or murder. There are several caveats to be aware of. This article is 43 years old and it was based on a narrow data set – 138 cases specifically in NYC. I liked it for the simplicity in the way the results were presented. While I'm sure there are other more recent reports out there, I didn't find one nearly as neat. From 1968 through the early 1980s, thousands of fires raged through the Bronx. The precise number is unknown and it's uncertain who was responsible for setting them. But at the time, most fingers pointed to the working-class Black and Puerto Rican tenants who lived in the borough. The newspapers said as much, as did the Blaxploitation movies of the late 1970s. Politicians, too: in the words of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, “People don't want housing in the South Bronx, or they wouldn't burn it down.” The Bronxites who lived that history, however, have long identified a different culprit, and over the past decade, historians have arrived at a new explanation for the arsons. Arson - which frequently involves the destruction of property - and business are not typically thought to be compatible. Indeed, there is a whole industry - the insurance industry - whose stated business is the mitigation of risk, including the risk of fire. Over the course of the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, fire insurance and fire prevention became untethered. This, combined with other developments, created the circumstances for arson to become profitable for some landlords. In this month's episode, guest Bench Ansfield details the local, national, and international circumstances that helped fuel the rise of arson-for-profit in U.S. cities. In doing so, they show how the Bronx and other urban areas like it served as crucial sites of late twentieth-century financialization via a ground-up history of finance told from the perspective of Bronx residents and community activists. Along the way, we discuss insurance brownlining, community-developed arson-fighting algorithms, and disco.
