The Cape Peninsula University of Technology has shut down all its campuses and ordered the evacuation of student residences following an arson attack at its Bellville campus. The move comes amid growing tensions over proposed financial clearance and registration requirements for 2027, which many students argue could lock out thousands who are already struggling financially. While university management says the safety of staff and students is its primary concern, student activists maintain that the proposed measures amount to financial exclusion. To help us unpack the situation, we spoke to DA Student Organisation, DASO Federal Chair, Gilbert Monnanyana.

On August 1, 2026, detectives believe 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci deliberately started the Old Trails Fire in North Spokane County.  His alleged actions burned more than 3,200 acres and destroyed 694 homes.  Court documents say Farinacci admitted to starting that fire and more than 20 others because he finds fire "powerful" and "beautiful."  He's currently facing five counts of first-degree arson as detectives continue to investigate other unsolved crimes.  In this episode, we dig into the case against him and what could come next.

Jay Inslee posted from Lopez Island to blame climate change for Spokane County's devastating wildfires — the kind of political opportunism that's become his brand. The internet is forever, and so is the police report: a suspect is now sitting in jail, charged in connection with the Old Trails Fire. Climate change. Or an arsonist with waterproof matches. You decide, Jay.The suspect, Farinichi, comes with a violent criminal history that includes a 2010 killing in Arizona. None of that makes it into the fundraising email, of course. Sean breaks down the arrest details, the political exploitation playbook, and Jason Rantz's reporting on how Inslee turned Spokane's smoke into a campaign asset before the facts were even in.Also on the show: the Climate Commitment Act's real impact on what you're paying at the pump, a comparison to how Governor Ferguson has handled the same season, and a closing segment on Fauci pleading the Fifth while the gain-of-function story slowly unfolds.Subscribe to @reasonablenews for daily news that actually questions the narrative.#NFRP #JayInslee #SpokaneGO PREMIUM WITH REASONABLE+ FOR UNCENSORED ACCESS

There's currently much hand-wringing that our arsenal of precision and long-range weapons has been depleted to the point where we may be unable to continue combat operations against Iran, let alone deter – and, if necessary, win – a war with Communist China. Understandably, the Pentagon is reluctant to provide sensitive information on the topic. But leaks and congressional testimony suggest there's truth to the speculation.  If so, it's the predictable result of “strategic arson” perpetrated by Chinese dictator Xi Jinping. His Russian and Iranian allies' attacks on Ukraine and Israel, respectively, came after consultations in Beijing. And they have diverted our policy-makers, consumed our warriors' energies and materiel and overwhelmed inadequate military production lines.  The Trump administration and Congress are scrambling to expand our defense industrial base. The question is: Will China's next arson in “World War Xi” wait until we do so?   This is Frank Gaffney.

We also explore the competing theories that have surrounded the Whiskey Au Go Go fire for more than fifty years—from organized crime and protection rackets to insurance fraud, revenge, and international heroin trafficking. Finally, we dive into the evidence presented during the recent coronial inquest, discuss why its findings remain eagerly awaited, and share where we believe the evidence points after eight weeks of research. Once again, Jewish communities in Israel came under attack on Shabbat as jihadi arsonists targeted the community of Chavat Gilad in Samaria (Shomron). Families were forced to evacuate during the holy day as flames spread, with reports indicating that around 30 homes and businesses were destroyed. Israeli Police have detained two Palestinian Authority policemen in connection with the incident. In a separate incident, a jihadi woman was caught on camera attempting to ignite fires near a Jewish community in eastern Gush Etzion. Thankfully, that fire was contained before causing any damage to the Jewish community. These attacks are not isolated events. During Israel's dry summer months, arson terrorism has repeatedly been used as a low-cost but highly destructive tactic against Jewish communities throughout Judea and Samaria and other parts of Israel. This raises difficult questions about the ideology motivating these attacks and why peace has remained so elusive. In this video, Avi Abelow examines the broader context of these incidents, discusses the involvement of Palestinian Authority policemen in many attacks against Israelis, and explores the ideas of former Labor MK Einat Wilf, who has argued that modern Palestinian nationalism developed primarily to destroy the Jewish state of Israel, not around building an independent state for themselves. The video also reflects on the international reaction following the October 7 massacre, including the wave of pro-Hamas demonstrations seen in many Western cities, and asks what these events reveal about the challenges Israel faces both on the battlefield and in the battle of ideas. If you value honest analysis, historical context, and an unapologetic pro-Israel perspective, subscribe to Pulse of Israel, like this video, and share it with others.Join Our Whatsapp Channel: https://chat.whatsapp.com/GkavRznXy731nxxRyptCMvFollow us on Twitter: https://x.com/AviAbelowJoin our Telegram Channel: https://t.me/aviabelowpulseFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pulse_of_israel/?hl=enPulse of Israel on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IsraelVideoNetworkVisit Our Website - https://pulseofisrael.com/Donate to Pulse of Israel: https://pulseofisrael.com/boost-this-video/

Folks, I have a question. And this one is just for the men listening. How cold... would you have to be... before you looked down and thought, "Well, I guess THIS is going into the fireplace."Seriously. What's the temperature? Negative 200? Ice Age? Penguins filing workers' comp claims? Because I can tell you right now, my survival instincts are going to lose that argument every single time.I ask because there's a story out of Indiana that reads like somebody gave ChatGPT a concussion.Police respond to a stabbing.Firefighters respond to a garage fire.At first you think, "That's a busy night."Then the investigations merge into one story, and somehow the missing family member turns out to be... well... only partially missing.According to investigators, this guy allegedly cut off his own penis... and then set it on fire. Now, I don't know who looked at that crime scene first, but imagine being the detective."So... we've got a fire.""Anything accelerate it?""Apparently poor decision-making."The reports say he admitted it.Admitted it?Sir, I don't think you needed a confession. I don't think CSI had to dust for fingerprints. There are some crimes where the evidence introduces itself. And here's what really gets me.He gets charged with... arson.Arson! That's adding insult to catastrophic injury. The prosecutor's reading the charges like it's any ordinary Tuesday."Sir, you're charged with destruction of property...""...and by the way... the State would also like to discuss the garage."Now, I have practical questions.Since when is that considered firewood?I grew up learning about kindling.Nobody ever said, "If the logs are damp..."And imagine the Boy Scouts handbook."Today we're earning the Fire Safety badge.""No, Kevin... NOT THAT!"The article says a family member was reported missing.Missing member?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Why were Jews once stereotyped as America's arsonists? In this episode, Rabbi Marc Katz sits down with historian Jeffrey Marx to discuss his fascinating book Jewish Firebugs: Arson and Antisemitism from the Civil War to World War I (NYU Press, 2026), which uncovers a little-known chapter in the history of American antisemitism. In the decades after the American Civil War, major insurance companies instructed agents to deny fire insurance to Jewish customers, claiming they were uniquely prone to arson. That accusation quickly spread beyond the insurance industry, finding its way into newspapers, cartoons, vaudeville, popular songs, and silent films, helping to cement the image of the "Jewish firebug" in the American imagination. Drawing on fire department records, insurance files, trial transcripts, newspapers, and other archival sources, Marx untangles the complicated relationship between stereotype and reality. He explores why some Jewish immigrants became involved in organized arson schemes, how insurance companies often enabled those crimes for their own financial interests, and why Jews became the only ethnic group in America burdened with this particular accusation. The result is a nuanced history that reveals as much about immigrant life, poverty, and urban America as it does about the enduring power of antisemitic myths. Together, Marx and Katz examine how stereotypes are created, why they persist long after the facts have faded, and what this forgotten episode teaches us about the history—and continuing evolution—of antisemitism in the United States. Episode 119 John Stuart and James Finch finally stand trial for the Whiskey Au Go Go firebombing—but this is no ordinary murder trial. As prosecutors build their case around disputed confessions, jailhouse informants, and weeks of alleged extortion threats, Stuart repeatedly sabotages the proceedings by swallowing homemade spring-loaded wire devices that send him into emergency surgery. Eventually barred from attending his own trial, Stuart dismisses his lawyer, forcing the court into the extraordinary position of conducting part of the proceedings in his hospital room. This episode explores the bizarre courtroom drama that followed, the witnesses whose credibility would be questioned for decades, and the evidence that convinced a jury to convict both men. But the story doesn't end with the verdict. From rooftop prison protests and repeated acts of self-harm to lingering allegations of fabricated confessions and unanswered questions about Stuart's death, the controversy surrounding Australia's "crime of the century" only deepens. And with another confession, a kidnapping, and fresh challenges to the convictions still ahead, the Whiskey Au Go Go saga isn't over yet.  Sources for this episode include Geoff Plunkett's excellent book, The Whiskey Au Go Go Massacre: Murder, Arson and the Crime of the Century, along with contemporary reporting and historical records. If you'd like a much deeper dive into the case, we highly recommend the book. As always, keep your exits clear and your fire escapes free of storage.

"I love talking with people. I also like that process of trying to shape messy reality into some kind of story, or that moment when you're alone with your notes, and you're trying to figure out how to organize it, and how to bend it into something that works as a story that will carry readers. That's the probably that's the kind of calmest moment for me," says Matthew Wolfe, author of Fires in the Night: The Earth Liberation Front, the FBI, and Secret History of Eco-Sabotage.Hey, CNFers, another LIVE podcast recording, this at Hodgepodge Books & Taps in Eugene, where I spoke to author and journalist Matthew Wolfe and about the art and craft of telling true stories. Pretty great. I love bringing my rig to places and gigging the podcast. This was a standing-room only event and they sold out of books, and two kegs were kicked. Is it the CNF Pod effect? You tell me.Matthew was on the show last year when he had an Atavist story so I HAD to talk to him, haha, but he reached out to me several weeks ago wondering if I'd be willing to interview him as part of a book event and I was like, I know a venue and we'll make it a podcast. HIs book is Fires in the Night: The Earth Liberation Front, the FBI, and a Secret History of Eco-Sabotage. It's published by Viking.I cut out the Q&A portion of this because you couldn't hear the question and I wasn't assertive enough to repeat the question into the mic. I'll be better about that in the future, but also, that's the ephemeral part of the live experience: part of why we attend live events is because it's here and then it isn't.So in this live podcast, Matt and I talk about: The ledger of invisible debts Asking questions in a stakeless way How Matt interviews Shaping messy realities How research is like cooking Broad stroke outlining Writing through quotes Why he's still drawn to this kind of work Competing with the phone And the blood, flesh, and messiness of human existenceDo enjoy.
