“Ladies and gentlemen, the Bronx is burning!” That legendary and apocryphal phrase, allegedly uttered by announcers during the 1977 World Series as flames rose above Yankee Stadium, seemed to encapsulate an entire era in this nation's urban history. Across that decade, a wave of arson coursed through American cities, destroying entire neighborhoods home to poor communities of color. Yet as historian Bench Ansfield demonstrates in Born in Flames: The Business of Arson and the Remaking of the American City (Norton, 2025), the vast majority of the fires were not set by residents, as is commonly assumed, but by landlords looking to collect insurance payouts. Driven by perverse incentives—new government-sponsored insurance combined with tanking property values—landlords hired “torches,” mostly Black and Brown youth, to set fires in the buildings, sometimes with people still living in them. Tens of thousands of families lost their homes to these blazes, yet for much of the 1970s, tenant vandalism and welfare fraud stood as the prevailing explanations for the arson wave, effectively indemnifying landlords. Ansfield's book, based on a decade of research, introduces the term “brownlining” for the destructive insurance practices imposed on poor communities of color under the guise of racial redress. Ansfield shows that as the FIRE industries—finance, insurance, and real estate— eclipsed manufacturing in the 1970s, they began profoundly reshaping Black and Brown neighborhoods, seeing them as easy sources of profit. At every step, Ansfield charts the tenant-led resistance movements that sprung up in the Bronx and elsewhere, as well as the explosion of popular culture around the fires, from iconic movies like The Towering Inferno to hit songs such as “Disco Inferno.” Ultimately, they show how similarly pernicious dynamics around insurance and race are still at play in our own era, especially in regions most at risk of climate shocks. PLRB on Demand
Suicide, Arson, and the Intentional Loss Exclusion

PLRB on Demand

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 19, 2025 20:35

Warning, this scenario mentions suicide. The insured's 21-year-old son lives with them and suffers from depression. While the insured parents are away, their son goes through a breakup and decides to kill himself. He gets very drunk and douses the entire first floor in the gasoline they use for their lawnmower. He turns over a candle and goes upstairs to pass out. A neighbor called the police in time, and the young man was saved-- but the resulting fire consumed the house.   Notable Timestamps [ 00:10 ] - John shares a serious scenario that raises pertinent coverage questions. [ 01:22 ] - The intentional loss exclusion ensures insurance covers fortuitous/accidental events, not property purposely destroyed for the prupose of collecting insurance proceeds. [ 02:00 ] - The intentional loss exclusion is clearly worded: if any insured commits an intentional act causing loss, no insured, even innocent ones, are entitled to coverage. [ 03:16 ] - Two criteria for the exclusion: the act must be by an insured, and committed with intent to cause loss, which can be difficult to prove. [ 04:53 ] - Courts consider if the perpetrator lacked the ability to form intent due to mental handicaps, mental health issues, or age, making the exclusion potentially inapplicable. [ 05:40 ] - Courts are now less friendly to the intoxication defense. The inferred intent doctrine holds that if a loss (like fire from gasoline) is "substantially certain to occur," intent is inferred, regardless of primary motive (e.g., suicide). [ 08:30 ] - Suicidal intent can be a defense, as individuals may not be in their right mind. However, the inferred intent doctrine makes recovery difficult if the actions were likely to cause property damage. [ 13:36 ] - In states with a Standard Fire Policy (SFP), which uses "conduct of the insured," innocent co-insureds might still recover, overriding tighter policy language. [ 17:20 ] - John provides a recap of the points above. Episode 74 On November 21, 2016, a fire tore through a home in Flora, Indiana, claiming the lives of four young sisters: Keyana, Keyara, Kerriele, Kionnie. Nearly nine years later, the case remains unsolved, mired in contradictions, unanswered questions, and a community still searching for justice. In this episode of Crime to Burn, we sift through the layers of rumor and fact surrounding the Flora fire. From conflicting reports about accelerant use to the shifting narratives in the press, we trace how early investigative missteps and public speculation blurred the line between truth and gossip. We'll examine the timeline of the fire, the aftermath that shook Carroll County, and the resignation of key officials that left even more questions hanging in the air. What we cover in this episode: The night of the fire and the immediate response Early statements by officials and how they conflicted The role of rumors in shaping public perception Why investigators and community members remain at odds The lasting impact on a small Indiana town still waiting for answers The Flora case is more than just an unsolved fire — it's a story about trust, accountability, and the thin line between official record and whispered speculation. Chicago Man Charged with Murder and Arson in Fatal Apartment Fire That Killed Four, Including Pregnant Woman and Child A 23-year-old Chicago man, Lontray Clark, has been charged with multiple counts of murder and arson after allegedly setting fire to an apartment building in the Austin neighborhood in Chicago on June 26, 2025. The blaze resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including a pregnant woman and her 5-year-old son, and left several others injured. According to prosecutors, Clark became enraged after discovering that his ex-girlfriend was dating his friend. After seeing a photo of the couple on social media, Clark allegedly purchased gasoline and materials to create a Molotov cocktail, which he used to ignite the apartment building located at 5222 W. North Avenue. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Clark buying gasoline and other items prior to the incident. The fire broke out around 1:50 a.m., trapping residents inside the building. The victims who perished in the fire were identified as Brad Cummings, 76, editor of the Austin-based newspaper The Voice; Regina Henry, 32, who was three months pregnant; her 5-year-old son, Jayceon Henry; and Regina's sister, Destiny Henry, 28. Destiny's 4-year-old son, Kyle, was critically injured and remains hospitalized. Clark's ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, who were the apparent targets of the attack, managed to escape the blaze by climbing out of a window. Clark was arrested in Springfield, Illinois, and is being held without bail. He faces multiple charges, including eight counts of murder, four counts of aggravated arson, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of residential arson Community members and family of the victims have expressed grief and outrage over the incident. Reverend George Smith Jr., a relative of the Henry family, stated, "He took precious lives from us and justice will be served." The fire displaced at least 28 residents and required the response of approximately 140 firefighters. On January 7, 1995, 43-year-old Connie Townsend’s home burned to the ground in Brockwell, Arkansas in front of over 20 witnesses. Connie was moving out of her house that day. She had separated from her estranged husband, David Townsend years earlier. David had been staying with his parents, Dale and Ramona, and also with his girlfriend of three years, JoAnn Ellis. But according to Connie’s daughters, Stacy and Amber, David was angry that day and had threatened Connie. They also said that David had threatened to burn the house down in the past. Connie’s body was found in a utility room; she was lying face down with a pair of sewing scissors underneath her body. Investigators said that Connie had died of smoke and soot inhalation, and according to the autopsy report there was no tissue left. And it seemed like after investigators went through the charred remains of her trailer, they had a lot more questions. Was Connie’s death due to an accidental fire, or murder and arson? We had heard from Connie’s daughters that Connie’s body was found in a junk room, a bedroom that they kind of used as a utility room. If there was a fire, why would Connie shut herself into a closet in the back of the utility room, a place where there was no escape? Or could someone have put her in that closet? If you have a case you’d like Catherine Townsend to look into, you can reach out to us at our Hell and Gone Murder Line at 678-744-6145. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Arson, Ego & Apologies: FBI Behavioral Analysis of Diddy's Alleged Tactics When Kid Cudi's Porsche was firebombed, it wasn't just an act of destruction — it may have been a message. In this episode of Hidden Killers, former FBI behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke joins us to analyze one of the most chilling elements of the Diddy federal trial: the alleged use of arson, intimidation, and performative apologies. We explore how these acts line up with the behavioral profile of a high-control, narcissistic personality operating in a closed ecosystem. Why would a powerful figure risk so much to send a message? What does it mean when an apology comes years later — and only after a public career detour? Robin breaks down the psychology of symbolic violence, the weaponization of status, and how actions like these can fall in line with coercive enterprise behavior seen in criminal and intelligence operations. This isn't about celebrity gossip — it's about understanding the behavioral tactics behind fear, silence, and control. #diddytrial #kidcudi #firebombing #federalcourt #robindreeke #behavioralanalysis #truecrime #diddyarson #celebrityabuse #hiddenkillers Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
