This morning I'm going to focus on a currency that is quite costly and maybe even a bit intimidating for some of us, and that is the currency of hospitality. Many of us give of our time to serve and volunteer, and many of us give some money to charity or noble causes, but we would rather not get too involved with people! We like our privacy; we don't want to get tangled up in other people's problems; and we generally prioritize spending time and investing energy in people we like and have much in common with as opposed to getting entangled with “strange” people or poor people or people we don't think we can relate with. Be that as it may, Jesus calls His Church to be generous with our hospitality as a result of God's grace. I'm going to be working from a lengthy passage from Luke 14:7-24 that falls into three segments that I'll cover under three subheadings:1) Resisting the Inner Ring; 2) A Strange Invitation; and 3) The Poor in Spirit BanquetSupport the showThanks for listening! Join us for our summer wrap up series: OVERFLOWING GENEROSITY. Our hope is this series would propel us into the new (school) year. This isn't your typical generosity series, instead we will be tackling some key subject and asking the question: How are we generous with The Gospel?
The keeper of a garden containing poisonous plants best serves his guests not by throwing open the gates but by explaining and guarding the plants. Paul's manner of life among the Thessalonians models a similarly attentive hospitality as he selflessly pours himself out for their good. Listen to Pastor Brett's sermon on I Thessalonians 2:1-12 to see how joyous mission leads naturally to generous hospitality.

Let's look into our hearts to see if we are ready to open the door to welcome our community.
Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 NLTThis means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to himKey Thought:Jesus models for us what it is to be a GO + TELL kind of person. All of the following verses demonstrate that Jesus was famous for using GENEROUS HOSPITALITY as a way to meet people and invite them into moments that transformed their lives.John 2:2-3 TPT - Jesus' first miracle, where He turns water into wine. Luke 7:34 TPT, Mark 2:25-16 MSG - Jesus' reputation as a man who loved to eat with social outcasts. Matthew 15:37-38 TPT - Jesus feeds a multitude. Luke 14:1 TPT - Jesus' teaches at the table. Luke 22:14-16 TPT - The last thing Jesus wanted to do with his followers before being crucified, was to eat with them.. Luke 24:30-31 TPTP, John 21:12 MSG, Luke 24:41-43 TPT - Jesus verifies his deity with food. Romans 16:1 MSG - The Jesus way is generous hospitality “In Luke's Gospel, Jesus is either going to a meal, at a meal or coming from a meal.” - Robert Charis, New Testament ScholarThe Jesus Model for reaching people can be broken down into 4 steps:Jesus MEETSJesus met people right where they were, both geographically and socially. Jesus changed the world one conversation at a time. We shouldn't underestimate the power of simply turning up…to church, to life group and being PRESENT with the people God has placed in our world. “Your presence does more to change the world than your tweets ever will.”Jesus EATSGathering around a table together is the great leveller, and Jesus knew this. From tax collectors, priests, prostitutes, and the poor, Jesus ate and drank with them all! The table elevates the poor and humbles the proud.Jesus SPEAKSJesus didn't waste his words, He spoke the truth. John 8:31 -32 NLT Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”People are looking to find freedom in their lives and this kind of freedom only comes from knowing the truth. If we withhold TRUTH, we withhold freedom and the TRUTH is a person. John 14:6 TPT Jesus explained, “I am the Way, I am the Truth, and I am the Life. No one comes next to the Father except through union with me.Jesus ASKSJesus was always inviting people into powerful moments of transformation. He left nothing ambiguous or uncertain. Today He is still clearly asking us to embark upon the task of reconciling people to Him. Discussion Questions:Your presence does more to change the world than your tweets ever will. Jesus changed the world one conversation at a time. Can you remember a conversation with someone that deeply moved, inspired, or challenged you? What was it about that conversations that made it so memorable? The table elevates the poor and humbles the proud. What do you think it was about the gathering around a meal that had such a powerful impact on those at the table with Jesus? Why do you think Jesus used these meals to communicate so much of his message? The truth is a person. Jesus was very clear about that a life lived with Him was a life of salvation and freedom. If we know that this truth will set people free, why do we often find it difficult to share this truth with others? How could we use Jesus' model of reaching others, through generous hospitality, to speak the truth of the gospel to someone this week? In this topical sermon on Luke 14:12-14, Pastor Andrew Coleman teaches that a healthy church shows GENEROUS HOSPITALITY because Christ was ultimately hospitable to sinners. Hospitality is a theme found throughout all of Scripture, and Christians should joyfully engage others as a testimony to the inner heart transformation through the Gospel. By becoming more hospitable, Christians fulfill God's aim for their lives. When you think of hospitality, what comes to mind? Entertaining guests in your home? Someone you know who is an incredible host? Today, we discover what authentic hospitality is by listening to Jesus tell us what it's not! Much to learn & apply from today's text.
Jesus has a compelling ability to make strangers into family and others into us. He did this primarily through eating meals around a table. Few practices are more important for this cultural moment than hospitality.

Part two of a collection of messages on generosity, our Lead Pastor Paul Benger speaks on Generous Hospitality.
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Romans 12:12-13
The Bible commands us to 'practice hospitality', but what does biblical hospitality look like? Through Jesus, all people get a seat at God’s table. When we grasp the generosity of God, we realise that even our own homes and our tables can become sacred spaces in which the Kingdom of God is made tangible.
