In this final episode in the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, Suzanne Mattaboni discusses her debut novel, ‘Once in a Lifetime', and shares excerpts from the story. Set in 1984, where punk reigns and Andy Warhol rules, 20-year-old art student Jessica longs for a life beyond her reach. Dreaming of an avant-garde study program in London, she's stuck waitressing and navigating drama with her boyfriend Drew, who wants to date others. Life takes a turn when she meets Whit, a magnetic guitarist, and dives into a post-punk scene full of quirky characters—cheating waiters, mystics, a military drag queen, and a Svengali bouncer—all while grappling with the specter of AIDS. Jessica must decide if chasing her dreams is worth risking heartbreak and self-discovery. With a smart, edgy '80s vibe, ‘Once in a Lifetime' is a coming-of-age story exploring friendship, love, and ambition. Suzanne Mattaboni is a former Newsday reporter and a Pushcart Prize-nominated author of women's fiction, horror, and pop culture essays. She's also a retro podcaster and a past winner of Seventeen magazine's Art and Fiction Contest. Her work has also appeared in The Huffington Post, Chicken Soup For The Soul, Mysterious Ways, Guideposts.com, Seventeen, Child, Parents, Motherwell, Dark Dossier, Turtle, Humpty Dumpty's, Long Island Weddings, and LA Parent. She's had pieces featured in anthologies including Pizza Parties and Poltergeist (horror stories set in the 1980s), Writes of Passage, The Little Demon Digest, and The Running Wild Anthology of Stories. In the third installment of the Oral History of Amendment 10, we discuss the lawsuits filed by several counties in the summer of 2018 in their attempt to toss Amendment 10 from the November ballot. We cover the litigation that went all the way up to the Florida Supreme Court and how the constitutional officers were ultimately victorious. Then with less than 50 days before the election, sheriffs got to work to educate the public about Amendment 10 by branding it the “Protection Amendment." We learn about the dedicated effort that united all sheriffs into garnering enough support for Amendment 10 to pass with more than 60% support.

This week on the podcast we're talking about Notre Dame, which had its grand reopening ceremony over the weekend. I talk to the local mayor, Ariel Weil, about what he has already seen inside, and then what's next for Notre Dame. Then, for a visitor's perspective going forward, I talked to Bertrand d'Aleman, the co-founder of My Private Paris about what tourists visiting Paris can expect from the cathedral over the next year or so. Both of these interviews were recorded not far from the Notre Dame itself. We recorded both on camera, you can see the video on YouTube here: This season of The Earful Tower is brought to you by the award-winning travel company My Private Paris, which specializes in tours in Paris, day trips outside Paris, and travel itineraries. Passage: 25 “Then there will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars; and there will be anguish on the earth among nations bewildered by the roaring of the sea and the waves. 26 People will faint from fear and expectation of the things that are coming on the world, because the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 But when these things begin to take place, stand up and lift your heads, because your redemption is near.” 29 Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they put out leaves you can see for yourselves and recognize that summer is already near. 31 In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all things take place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. -- Luke 21:25-1 (CSB) Song: Make a Way (https://open.spotify.com/track/12EfpMAgDKFFAwPD6lVUmP?si=949813e881ee4ad0) by Isaac Wardell, Kate Bluett, Paul Zach Lyrics: Come Son of God and make us new Light of the world our hearts renew Hope in our inner darkness lies Oh healing sun of justice rise Come promised since our Eden's end Child of the woman come defend Long have we felt the serpent's sting Come strike his head and mercy bring O make a way open wide the gates O make a way through the sorrow and the pain O make a way though the road is dark and winding O come come Come Son of Man to show the way O through the tears may we see the day So long did we in darkness dwell Come down to break the chains of hell Prayer: Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Bible reading from John 18:28 - 19:16 (EHV)
In this episode of Raising Godly Girls, co-hosts Rachael and Natalie explore the concept of "Holy Habits"—the intentional, God-centered practices that shape a lifelong spiritual foundation. As 2024 draws to a close, they reflect on the importance of creating habits that go beyond simple routines, offering examples of how spiritual rhythms can deeply root faith in the heart and mind of your daughter. From regular worship and family prayer times to joyful celebrations of spiritual milestones, Rachael and Natalie discuss how Holy Habits can nurture and sustain a girl's relationship with God year-round. One essential practice they explore is the concept of “Spiritual Rites of Passage.” Inspired by a recent Raising Godly Girls Minute segment, they consider how celebrating milestones like baptism or confirmation with the same enthusiasm as birthdays can help girls see their faith as an integral part of their identity. Rachael and Natalie share personal experiences, along with Biblical insights, to illustrate how marking these moments can anchor your daughter's spiritual journey and create cherished, God-focused memories. They also dig into the importance of keeping Holy Habits free from legalism or a “checklist” mentality. As Natalie puts it, these habits are about tuning our hearts to sing God's grace—not about earning His favor. From the hymns of old to the wise words of mentors, they remind listeners that spiritual growth often comes through “long, slow obedience in the same direction.” Listeners will discover practical ways to start building these holy habits—from choosing a single, small habit to foster consistency, to incorporating age-appropriate faith practices with resources from AHG's ministry alliances. The episode encourages parents to approach these practices with grace, knowing that growth in faith, like any good habit, takes time and commitment. Today's Passage: 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. 6 If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. 7 Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.Today's Prayer: God of all Comfort, we are encouraged today by the words of the prophet Isaiah: Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. In a season that seems to leave no room for sadness, we take great comfort from knowing You took our pain and bore our suffering. We ask that Your Spirit would help us to know You more deeply on this day as the God of all Comfort. Amen. For more information about this Advent season, visit our Christmas at Fellowship page. Passage: 6 But now Timothy has come to us from you and brought us good news about your faith and love. He reported that you always have good memories of us and that you long to see us, as we also long to see you. 7 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and affliction, we were encouraged about you through your faith. 8 For now we live, if you stand firm in the Lord. 9 How can we thank God for you in return for all the joy we experience before our God because of you, 10 as we pray very earnestly night and day to see you face to face and to complete what is lacking in your faith? 11 Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you. 12 And may the Lord cause you to increase and overflow with love for one another and for everyone, just as we do for you. 13 May he make your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. Passage: 1 The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks; he summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 From Zion, the perfection of beauty, God appears in radiance. 3 Our God is coming; he will not be silent! Devouring fire precedes him, and a storm rages around him. 4 On high, he summons heaven and earth in order to judge his people: 5 “Gather my faithful ones to me, those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” 6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God is the Judge. Christ is coming! Come, Thou blessed Prince of Peace, come, Thou blessed Prince of Peace. 2 Earth can now but tell the story Of Thy bitter cross and pain; she shall yet behold Thy glory, When Thou comest back to reign: Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Let each heart repeat the strain, let each heart repeat the strain. 3 Long Thine exiles have been pining, far from rest, and home, and Thee; but, in heav'nly vestures shining, they their loving Lord shall see: Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Haste the joyous jubilee, haste the joyous jubilee. 4 With that blessed hope before us, let no harp remain unstrung; let the mighty advent chorus onward roll from tongue to tongue: "Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Come, Lord Jesus, quickly come, come, Lord Jesus, quickly come!" Prayer: Grant, Almighty God, that as you have stretched forth your helping hand to us by your only begotten Son, not only binding yourself to us by an oath, but even sealing your eternal covenant by the blood of the same, your Son—grant that we in turn may keep our faith toward you so that we persevere in the undefiled worship of your name, till we attain unto the reward of our faith in your heavenly kingdom, through the same, Christ our Lord. Passage: 3 Then the Lord will go out to fight against those nations as he fights on a day of battle. 4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. The Mount of Olives will be split in half from east to west, forming a huge valley, so that half the mountain will move to the north and half to the south. 5 You will flee by my mountain valley, for the valley of the mountains will extend to Azal. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of King Uzziah of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come and all the holy ones with him. 6 On that day there will be no light; the sunlight and moonlight will diminish. 7 It will be a unique day known only to the Lord, without day or night, but there will be light at evening. 8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it toward the eastern sea and the other half toward the western sea, in summer and winter alike. 9 On that day the Lord will become King over the whole earth — the Lord alone, and his name alone. -- Zechariah 14:3-9 (CSB) Song: In the Fullness of Time (https://open.spotify.com/track/1rfHpuFhvuaJEa5lQVaeSw?si=827457ab780143bf) by Matt Papa and Matt Boswell Lyrics: In the fullness of time God sent His Son Immanuel now behold incarnate Love A virgin and her child a Savior meek and mild The star become the sign in the fullness of time Prophets long they foretold the promised dawn Hail God of God Light of Light begotten One By Whom all things were made there in a manger laid Now born to us this night in the fullness of time Holy holy holy moment God has come to dwell with us Glory to the Lamb the great I Am who came On that night divine in the fullness of time Hosts of angels resounded at His birth And hosts of angels will endless tell His worth And He shall come again His kingdom has no end All things made new made right In the fullness of time Holy holy holy moment God has come to dwell with us Glory to the Lamb the great I Am who came On that night divine in the fullness of time Glory in the highest Our deliverer Holy holy holy moment God has come to dwell with us Glory to the Lamb the great I Am Holy holy holy moment God has come to dwell with us Glory to the Lamb the great I Am who came On that night divine in the fullness of time Born to us this night in the fullness of time The star became the sign in the fullness of time Holy holy holy in a manger lowly Christ the Son now veiled in flesh in our humanity Kingdoms bow before Him heaven and earth adore Him God here in person Hail His majesty Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. This week on the podcast we are chatting about gin with Charlotte Buisson Dackow from La Distillerie de l'Arbre Sec. This cool, new micro-distillery is located on a quiet street, with a macabre history, mere steps from the Louvre museum in the 1st arrondissement. We visited their stunning workshop and listened as Charlotte explained the evolution of the gin culture in France. Offering excellent quality gin, as well as tastings and workshops, it's clear that Charlotte and her colleagues take gin seriously. Of course, wine is the dominant beverage here, but, as Charlotte explains, things are changing. “I think gin is taking over the world! Often French people are set in their ways, so we are a little behind everywhere else, but it's starting here in France. I think it's really exciting.” This craft-distillery is such an exciting addition to the Paris mixology scene, comfortably co-existing alongside the more traditional emblems. As Charlotte says “wine will always be there, but we're just making the drink culture richer.” We couldn't agree more. Bible reading from John 17:6-19 (EHV)
Passage: 1 At that time Judah left his brothers and settled near an Adullamite named Hirah. 2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua; he took her as a wife and slept with her. 3 She conceived and gave birth to a son, and he named him Er. 4 She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and named him Onan. 5 She gave birth to another son and named him Shelah. It was at Chezib that she gave birth to him. 6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. 7 Now Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the Lord's sight, and the Lord put him to death. 8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother's wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and produce offspring for your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, so whenever he slept with his brother's wife, he released his semen on the ground so that he would not produce offspring for his brother. 10 What he did was evil in the Lord's sight, so he put him to death also. 11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Remain a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He might die too, like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father's house. 12 After a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers. 13 Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.” 14 So she took off her widow's clothes, veiled her face, covered herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. 16 He went over to her and said, “Come, let me sleep with you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me for sleeping with me? ” 17 “I will send you a young goat from my flock,” he replied. But she said, “Only if you leave something with me until you send it.” 18 “What should I give you? ” he asked. She answered, “Your signet ring, your cord, and the staff in your hand.” So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him. 19 She got up and left, then removed her veil and put her widow's clothes back on. 20 When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get back the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her. 21 He asked the men of the place, “Where is the cult prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim? ” “There has been no cult prostitute here,” they answered. 22 So the Adullamite returned to Judah, saying, “I couldn't find her, and besides, the men of the place said, ‘There has been no cult prostitute here.' ” 23 Judah replied, “Let her keep the items for herself; otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send this young goat, but you couldn't find her.” 24 About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law, Tamar, has been acting like a prostitute, and now she is pregnant.” “Bring her out,” Judah said, “and let her be burned to death! ” 25 As she was being brought out, she sent her father-in-law this message: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.” And she added, “Examine them. Whose signet ring, cord, and staff are these? ” 26 Judah recognized them and said, “She is more in the right than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not know her intimately again. 27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb. 28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand, and the midwife took it and tied a scarlet thread around it, announcing, “This one came out first.” 29 But then he pulled his hand back, out came his brother, and she said, “What a breakout you have made for yourself! ” So he was named Perez. 30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread tied to his hand, came out, and was named Zerah. Passage: 25 “Therefore I tell you: Don't worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Consider the birds of the sky: They don't sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you worth more than they? 27 Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying? 28 And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don't labor or spin thread. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. 30 If that's how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won't he do much more for you — you of little faith? 31 So don't worry, saying, ‘What will we eat? ' or ‘What will we drink? ' or ‘What will we wear? ' 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you -- Matthew 6:25-33 (CSB) Song: Peace Be Still (https://open.spotify.com/track/0uCviUHk4AxxivWciQGa1X?si=e012dec5cda140c3) by Andrew Holt, Hope Darst, Mia Fieldes Lyrics: I don't want to be afraid Every time I face the waves I don't want to be afraid I don't want to be afraid I don't want to fear the storm Just because I hear it roar I don't want to fear the storm I don't want to fear the storm Peace be still Say the word and I will Set my feet upon the sea Till I'm dancing in the deep Peace be still You are here so it is well Even when my eyes can't see I will trust the voice that speaks I'm not gonna be afraid 'Cause these waves are only waves I'm not gonna be afraid I'm not gonna be afraid I'm not gonna fear the storm You are greater than its roar I'm not gonna fear the storm I'm not gonna fear at all Peace peace over me Let faith rise up O heart believe Let faith rise up in me Prayer: Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. -Book of Common Prayer
Dozens of bills have passed through the Senate in Labor's last-minute effort to churn through its legislative backlog before the end of the year. Deals with the crossbench and the Coalition got the bills over the line, but the government has faced criticism for the lack of scrutiny for the bills.

Real estate agent and mature athlete Barry Karch and host of the Running For Your Life podcast returns to the show to share more of his wisdom and insights on how we can all outsmart Father Time and stop him in his tracks by challenging ourselves to become stronger and healthier every day. Barry also describes his most recent challenge called Rite of Passage, which requires continuous movement for 24 hours and is guaranteed to break you down and discover things about yourself that you never knew before. It is also designed to help participants grow physically, mentally, spiritually, and form life-long relationships with other team members. Most of all, Barry encourages all of us to reject the belief that we can't get better as we get older, to embrace the fact that each decade can be better than the one before, and celebrating what we are able to accomplish, no matter how big or small. Download this positive, encouraging, and uplifting episode to hear more of Barry's story and words of encouragement, including how he fared in the Rite of Passage, and what he has next on his challenge agenda. In this sermon, John MacArthur explores 1 Thessalonians 5:18, where Paul commands believers to "In everything give thanks." MacArthur emphasizes that gratitude should be a constant aspect of the Christian life, regardless of circumstances. He highlights that thankfulness is a distinguishing mark of believers, contrasting it with the ungratefulness characteristic of unbelievers. By recognizing God's sovereignty and His work in all situations, Christians are called to express gratitude in every circumstance.
