This edition of Free City Radio features the second in a set of programs focused on hearing community voices from Montreal who engaged with the Voices beyond lockdown zine project of Free City Radio. The zine was launched in the fall of 2024 and focuses on the ways that community activists and artists responded to the pandemic lockdowns of 2020, particularly people directly from, or directly working with, communities that were already experiencing systemic persecution or discrimination before the pandemic began. This interview set is an opportunity to hear reflections in the current context, in 2025, on the sustaining relevance and importance of understanding how this period impacts the present. Also the ways that focusing on activist and artist voices in regards to how to both conceptualize and frame the sustaining relevance of this period, is important. On this edition Jordan Arseneault, researcher, performer, musician and community activist shares their reflections on the zine. Jordan underlines the ways that the realities of the pandemic lockdowns in the winter 2020 were driven by neoliberal policies. Jordan also underlines that the pandemic can be considered a topic that was is over discussed while still certain realities were excluded from those discussions, like those faced by undocumented workers. Jordan references historian Mary Beard's work as interesting because this period of lockdowns, again pushed us toward the local, while different from past periods where only the local context mattered, in 2020 it was a local that was globalized. Jordan references Joyce Wieland's work as an interesting way to understand the layers involved in this presentation, with both the obvious political conclusions being present while there also existing multiple layers of meaning when we take the time to reflect and discuss. In unserer neuen Folge von „Zugehört“ sprechen John Zimmermann, Jürgen Luh, Jörg Morré und Frank Reichherzer über das lange und vielschichtige Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs – und darüber, warum das Jahr 1945 weniger ein Schlusspunkt als ein Übergang war. Neubewertungen des Zweiten WeltkriegsAuch achtzig Jahre nach seinem Ende ist unser Verständnis vom Zweiten Weltkrieg und seinem Ausgang im Wandel. Historische Forschung, gesellschaftliche Debatten und politische Entwicklungen haben dazu beigetragen, die Ereignisse von 1945 immer wieder neu zu interpretieren. Unsere Gesprächspartner werfen einen differenzierten Blick auf das Jahr 1945 – und stellen die Frage: Wie lassen sich die Umbrüche am Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs fassen und bewerten? Wege aus dem KriegAngesichts der globalen Dimension des Zweiten Weltkriegs ist es kaum möglich, von dem einen Kriegsende zu sprechen. Für manche Regionen begann der Frieden bereits vor den offiziellen Kapitulationen Deutschlands und Japans – für andere hingegen setzten sich Gewalt, Zwang und politische Auseinandersetzungen in neuen Konstellationen fort. Der Übergang vom Krieg zum Frieden stellte vielerorts keine klare Zäsur dar, sondern war ein ein brüchiger und langwieriger Prozess. Potsdamer Konferenz und Nürnberger ProzesseIm Mittelpunkt des Gesprächs stehen zwei Schlüsselereignisse des Jahres 1945: die Potsdamer Konferenz im Sommer sowie die Nürnberger Prozesse, die Ende des Jahres begannen. Beide markieren zentrale Momente für die kommende neue Ordnung der Welt und im Umgang mit der Vergangenheit. Im Mikrokosmos der Potsdamer Konferenz werden die geopolitischen Weichenstellungen mit ihren Spannungen und Bruchlinien deutlich, die in der Nachkriegszeit die internationale Ordnung prägten: vom Kalten Krieg bis hin zur Dekolonisation. Die Kriegsverbrecherprozesse wiederum waren nicht nur ein neues und internationales juristisches Projekt, sondern auch ein moralischer wie auch politischer Versuch der Vergangenheitsbewältigung – und gleichzeitig ein Forum, um Ordnungsvorstellungen zu entwickeln. 1945 als Passage – ein Jahr des ÜbergangsIn dieser Folge von „Zugehört“entsteht ein facettenreiches Bild des Jahres 1945, das einfache Narrative hinterfragt. Sie lädt dazu ein, um über Transformationen von Gewalt im 20. Jahrhundert nachzudenken. Das Gespräch eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf die Vielfalt der Erwartungen, Möglichkeiten und Wege, die in und durch das Jahr 1945 in die Zukunft führen konnten. So wird zugleich weniger eine „Stunde Null“ als vielmehr die „Passage 1945“ deutlich. Unter dem Leitmotiv „Passage 1945“ findet am 2./3 September 2025 in der Orangerie im Neuen Garten in Potsdam ein Workshop statt. This edition of Free City Radio is the first in a two editions that are focused on reflecting on the Voices beyond lockdown zine project, an initiative of Free City Radio that highlights the voices of community activists and artists responding to the pandemic lockdown. For these two editions I invited people who attended the launch of the zine in Montreal in the fall of 2024 to share their reflections on the publication and the sustaining importance of the political, social and cultural lessons of the pandemic lockdown period. As the zine held a particular focus on the experiences of communities already experiencing marginalization (economic and political) before the pandemic began, the voices featured look to collective action and community organizing that took place to address power imbalances and injustices during the pandemic. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA), along with numerous state cattle associations, is urging lawmakers to support the Hauling Exemptions for Livestock Protection (HELP) Act, introduced by Representative Jeff Hurd (R-CO). This critical legislation would provide long-overdue relief for livestock haulers, protecting them from the burdensome Hours of Service (HOS) and Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandates. HELP Act Would Reinstate Vital Exemptions for Livestock Transportation The HELP Act seeks to permanently codify HOS and ELD exemptions that were temporarily granted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) during the COVID-19 pandemic. These exemptions allowed livestock truck drivers to safely transport live animals without being restricted by rigid federal mandates. For nearly two years, these waivers gave haulers the flexibility to adapt to weather, traffic, and the unique demands of transporting live animals—ensuring animal welfare and supply chain efficiency. However, once the exemptions expired, livestock haulers once again faced regulations that threaten both. By reinstating these exemptions, the HELP Act would ensure drivers can continue safely and humanely transporting livestock across the country without unnecessary delays or stress to animals. Speed Limiter Rule Dropped, But More Relief Is Needed In a recent win for the livestock industry, FMCSA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the withdrawal of a proposed rule to require speed limiters on commercial trucks. While this was welcomed by livestock haulers, HOS and ELD mandates remain a pressing concern. Unlike other freight, cattle and other livestock cannot be easily stopped, unloaded, or left idle during transport. Delays can cause undue stress or injury to animals, making flexible transportation rules essential. NCBA Thanks Rep. Jeff Hurd and Urges Congressional Action The NCBA has voiced strong support for the HELP Act and applauds Rep. Jeff Hurd for introducing this livestock-friendly legislation.
