A conversation exploring the Jewish view of death, grief, and the afterlife. Drawing from her personal losses and decades of spiritual exploration, Elissa shares her journey, reflections from her work preparing bodies for Jewish burial, and powerful insights on mourning rituals and what they can teach us about what it means to truly live. Elissa Felder is the Coordinator for Core's Communities of Practice. Elissa started and actively manages Core's community of practice for women engaged with traditional chevrah kadisha. She is responsible for providing on-going professional development for the community. Passage: 1 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,  whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity,  and in whose spirit there is no deceit. 3 For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away  through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;  my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah 5 I acknowledged my sin to you,  and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”  and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah (Psalm 32:1–5) Song: Forgiven by Brian Johnson, Graham Moore, Jeremy Riddle, and Joel Taylor Lyrics: I will sing for You alone have rescued this life Jesus You have set me free You alone took away all sin and disgrace When You gave Your life to ransom me I am forgiven at the foot of the cross I am accepted by the power of Your love My every stain is washed away I am forgiven Here I stand in the light of Your glory and grace Where heaven's love and justice meet Now I live for the One who has called me by name Who is risen and alive in me I'm embraced at the foot of the cross By the love and the mercies You have lavished on us My every stain is washed away And I am forgiven Prayer: O most mighty God, and merciful Father, who has compassion upon all men, and who does not despise the sighing of a contrite heart, nor the desire of such as are sorrowful; mercifully assist our prayers that we make before you in all our troubles and adversities, whensoever they oppress us; and graciously hear us, that those evils, which the craft and subtlety of the devil or man work against us, may, by your good providence, be brought to nothing, that we your servants, being hurt by no persecutions, may evermore give thanks unto you in your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. —Book of Common Prayer (1552)

We are used to kings who use their power to their advantage, see their position as a way to get what is best for them, and whose power is limited. But Jesus is not like other kings. Jesus uses His power and position to serve and sacrifice, and even death cannot stop His reign. Jesus is more than just a savior, He is a king like no other. No other ruler has ever proven themselves to be sovereign over death. Plenty have tried, but no one is like King Jesus. His power over death is your hope, because His victory over death means death doesn't have to be the end of your story—if you will submit to Him as king. Long before chocolate eggs and Sunday services, cultures around the world honored the Earth's reawakening in alignment with Goddess traditions - Eostre, Ishtar, Inanna, and hundreds of others - who embodied life itself, renewal, fertility, the sacred power of the body, and the great turning of the seasons. We'll explore the mythic origins of Easter, before Christianity, the rise and fall of Goddess Cultures, the symbolic significance of Spring, underworld journeys and how they show up in our lives, as well as what it means to reclaim the sacred feminine in a modern world. This episode is both a remembrance and a reclamation, a call to akaen the goddess that lives within all of us and listen for the song of the Earth as she rises again into a new cycle of life and fertility. In this episode you'll hear:00:22 - Introduction 03:15 - Grounding Practice04:32 - A Peek Into Ancient Goddess Cultures 07:07 - Every Woman Carries The Echoes of the Goddess07:39 - Feminine Rites of Passage08:23 - The Destruction of Goddess Traditions11:35 - Christianity's Co-Opting of Ancient Celebrations 12:45 - Why Eggs + Bunnies Represent Easter14:03 - What Easter Was Really About15:25 - The Goddesses of Rebirth: Ishtar, Oestre, Inanna, Persephone, and More17:52 - Death and Rebirth Stories Have Always Been A Part of Human Consciousness18:19 - The Story of Inanna's Descent Into The Underworld27:51 - The Three Stages of a Rite of Passage and How They Show Up In Our Lives As Women and Mothers31:19 - Rites of Passage as a Part of Female Biology and How Our Feminine Cycles Mirror The Cycles of Nature33:27 - The Ancient Symbols of Easter: Eggs, Hares, Water, + Fire40:06 - May We Remember: A Wish For Us All at the Turning of Spring40:50 - Closing Meditation: Awakening The Goddess Within Send me a text! In this special extended episode, I spend the day with my good friend, documentary photographer Giles Penfound, once the head of photography for the British Army, now a passionate ambassador for the slower, more intentional world of film photography. We're in the darkroom together, where Giles takes the film I shot recently in India and brings it to life. If you've ever wondered what really goes on in that red-lit sanctuary, or what it means to wait, to watch, and to witness an image slowly emerge from nothing, this one's for you. Even if you've never stepped into a darkroom, there's something in this about patience, process, and friendship that I hope might just land with you. It's part workshop, part fireside chat, and at times it gets deeply personal. Over a cooked breakfast in a feature I call In the Fryer, I ask Giles some tougher questions, the kind you only ask a friend you trust, and the kind that lead to answers you don't always expect. This is a story about time and about why film photography, with all its waiting and wonder, still has something powerful to teach us in a world that wants everything now. Links to all guests and features will be on the showpage, my sincere thanks to Arthelper and LOWA who sponsor this show, plus our Extra Milers without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. If you're a bloke, or have a bloke (young or old) in your life - this is a conversation not to be missed. Once you've listened to it, share it far and wide, as Dr. Zac Seidler, a clinical psychologist and Director of Research at Movember, has the most comprehensive view I've ever come across on what positive masculinity and good men's mental health looks like. The conversation focuses on not just the psychological aspects of men's mental health, but the societal framework that shapes masculinity. The discussion traverses through topics of men's mental health awareness, therapeutic approaches, toxic and positive masculinity, and how we can foster healthier male communities. What You'll Learn: Deciphering Masculinity: We delve into how the traditional concepts of masculinity can be both harmful and beneficial and discuss the need to redefine masculinity in more positive, flexible terms. Therapeutic Approaches: Explore why traditional therapy might not resonate with men and how 'gender-sensitive' therapy can be a more effective approach. Social Connection: The vital role of social networks in men's mental health and how a lack of these connections can lead to severe psychological issues, including suicide. Preventative Measures: Understand the importance of getting ahead of mental health issues through early interventions and community-based programs. Breaking Down Stigmas: Discuss the societal changes needed to address mental health proactively instead of reactively, and the importance of redefining spaces for men to safely express themselves. Key Takeaways: Masculinity Redefined: Emphasising the value of attributes like stoicism, altruism, and service when appropriately contextualised. Supportive Networks: Highlighting the significance of building and maintaining strong social connections throughout life. Therapy Reimagined: Utilising flexible therapeutic practices that consider men's socialisation and comfort levels. Community and Connection: Promoting the idea that safe, non-judgmental spaces are crucial for men's mental health. Early Intervention: The critical role of incorporating mental health teachings and practices from a young age to build resilience. Resources: Engage with Movember's initiatives focusing on men's mental health. Explore gender-sensitive therapy training programs like "Men in Mind" to better understand how to engage men in therapeutic settings. Connect with organisations like "The Man Cave" and "Top Blokes" that offer programs to support young men. Support and Share: Listening to this podcast could inspire not just awareness but also actionable steps towards building better support systems for the men in our lives. This conversation sheds light on the core issues impacting men's mental health and explores innovative solutions designed to uplift and support men in maintaining mental health wellness. To continue this important dialogue on men's mental health, visit Movember's website and explore their extensive resources aimed at creating change and advocating for better health. Passage: 1 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. 2 O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. 3 Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. 4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. 5 Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. 6 Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. 7 Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O Lord! (Psalm 25:1–7) Song: 25 by Red Rocks Worship Lyrics: To you, Lord, I lift my soul I will trust the one who steadies me I will wait and have no shame As you make me to know your ways All my days are yours Take me by the hand and lead me in your truth Teach my soul to rest only in you For you are the one who saves all the lengths of my days My hope rests only in you Forever I will fix my eyes On the rock who stands much higher You defend, you call me friend You have marked me with your righteousness Your presence is my home Take me by the hand and lead me in your truth Teach my soul to rest only in you For you are the one who saves all the lengths of my days My hope rests only in you You are good Lord Steadfast is your love You are good Lord Steadfast is your love You are good Lord Steadfast is your love You are good Lord Steadfast is your love Take me by the hand and lead me in your truth Teach my soul to rest only in you For you are the one who saves all the lengths of my days My hope rests only in you, only in you Prayer: Write your blessed name, O Lord, upon my heart, there to remain so indelibly engraved, that no prosperity, no adversity shall ever move me from your love. Be to me a strong tower of defense, a comforter in tribulation, a deliverer in distress, a very present help in trouble, and a guide to heaven through the many temptations and dangers of this life. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God. 11 You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another. 12 You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord. 37 And you shall observe all my statutes and all my rules, and do them: I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:1-4, 9-12, 18, 37) Song: The Greatest Commandment by Paul Zach Lyrics: Love the Lord your God With all your heart and soul and mind And love your neighbor as yourself Let us be known let us be known By the way we love Love love love the greatest commandment is Love love love the greatest commandment is Love love love the greatest commandment is love Prayer: O Lord, Let me not live to be useless or to do no good; Deliver me from an inactive life and from squandering your gifts. Distilling a 4200-mile Pacific passage into memorable sound bites isn't easy. But certain experiences definitely stand out. Here are some favorite moments from our 33 days at sea. Summary  Sitting in a rolling anchorage is a great time to review Pacific passage highlights. After 32 days at sea and 8 hours heaving to so we could anchor during daylight there are so many epic experiences to reflect on. On our passage, I wrote daily emails. Follow the link below for access to all of them. They include observations of conditions and the moon and stars. But here, I'm just focusing on the highlights. One major highlight was crossing the Equator. Why should crossing an imaginary line feel so momentous? I don't know. But talking to other cruisers, I know we're not alone.  We also saw an epic pod of commuting dolphins. I say commuting because they didn't play in the bow but kept moving. Other wildlife included a visiting bird, determined to be a swallowtail gull.  Near the equator, the moon rises as the sun is setting. So we could see the sun going down over our bow as the moon rose over our transom.  Before the seas became rough, we caught a large mahi-mahi that kept us fed for two days.  While not a highlight, the chafe of our main halyard added some excitement to the passage. Using the topping lift to carry the main was a temporary fix until we used it as a messenger line to secure a replacement halyard.  Other highlights included ticking off milestones--our first 1000 miles and crossing the equator. I enjoyed watching our self-steering unit (we called it Larry) do its work.  Of course, even routines are momentous underway, including our traditional Sunday pancake breakfast. With 30 knots of wind, it was exciting. But it was a good reminder of how we're adjusting our ideas about acceptable conditions.  We completed our passage of over 3000 miles at 5.5 knots on average, faster than many cruisers on boats longer than our 28-foot Calypso. In the end, we were generally comfortable, ate well, and got enough rest. I hope to see you in an anchorage. Look for Calypso. And check out the links to find pictures and more details of our passage. We are taking this season to see how this sacred text unifies us to one another as well as generations before and after us. (Psalm 17:1–7) Song: Psalm 17 by Poor Bishop Hooper Lyrics: You have tested my heart and examined me In the night, You have tried me and found nothing I've determined that my mouth will not sin anymore You have tested my heart and examined me In the night, You have tried me and found nothing I've determined that my mouth will not sin anymore Hear my plea, for it comes from honest lips Check my mind and my thoughts, everyone of them I pray becausе I know You hear it I pray because I know You hеar it Protect me, O Lord As the pupil of Your eye Underneath the shadow of Your wings is where I hide My steps are set up on Your paths My feet have never slipped despite The countless men surrounding my every move Rise up, O Lord And bring them down Rise up, O Lord And bring them down Rise up, O Lord And bring them down But I will see Your face in righteousness When I awake I will be satisfied But I will see Your face in righteousness When I awake I will be satisfied But I will see Your face in righteousness When I awake I will be satisfied But I will see Your face in righteousness When I awake I will be satisfied With Your presence (With Your presence) With Your presence (With Your presence) With Your presence, with Your presence (With Your presence)... Prayer: “Your glorious Majesty surround me, the blessed Trinity protect me, and the eternal Godhead preserve me. Your unlimited mercy support me; your loving kindness encompass me; your favor make me to rejoice. The eternal truth of God be my delight, the saving knowledge of Christ strengthen me, and the all-prevailing grace of God be sufficient for me. May the grace of God the Father lead me, the wisdom of God the Son be my consolation, and the power of the Holy Spirit enlighten me. Lord my Creator, stand by me; my Redeemer, save me; and my Comforter, dwell with me. Amen.” — Johann Habermann

Passage: 1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” 3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. 5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. 6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. (Psalm 16:1-6) Reflection: “Apart from you I have no good” (Psalm 16:2). It's a short sentence, but it says more than entire volumes of theology. David's words here are a confession, a re-centering of the heart around a simple truth: God himself is the source of everything good. At one level, this is about gratitude. Every good thing—relationships, work, beauty, food, rest—is ultimately a gift from God. Even when life feels chaotic or uncertain, the blessings that remain are not accidents. They come from a good and generous hand. So this psalm invites us to say thank you—not just in a general sense, but directly to the one from whom every good and perfect gift comes. But David's words also go deeper. They're not just about receiving good things from God, but about recognizing that God himself is the good thing we need most. He is our portion and our cup (Psalm 16:5). He is the inheritance that makes all the “lines” fall in pleasant places (16:6). To know him is better than any other joy or achievement life could offer. To walk apart from him is to forfeit true life, even if we appear to gain everything else. So consider: Do you see God as the giver of every good thing—or do you live as if you must grab those things on your own? Is your joy rooted in God himself—or only in the gifts he gives? Sometime today, pray that God would re-center your heart to delight in him above all else—and thank him for every good thing that flows from his hand. Song: Fullness of Joy (Psalm 16) by Caroline Cobb Smith Lyrics: O God You are my refuge I know without You I have no good thing O God You are my portion My chosen portion You are what I need No other god beside You You hold my lot and fill my cup Oh beautiful inheritance You are enough In your presence there is fullness There is fullness of joy At your right hand there is goodness Boundless goodness Forevermore I choose you Lord O God you go before me You're right beside me In my darkest night My God you hold my future My hope it rests secure In the finished work of Christ My heart is glad My soul rejoices You hold me fast you won't let go Your ways are good and good for me I'm yours and yours alone Your holy one has risen up He's overcome the grave The path of life is opened wide For he has made a way Prayer: “O God, you are life, wisdom, truth, bounty, and blessedness, the eternal, the only true good; our God and our Lord, you are our hope and our heart's joy— we acknowledge with thanksgiving that you have made us in your image, and that we may direct our thoughts to you. Lord, make us know you aright, that we may love, enjoy, and possess you more and more; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” — Anselm
