Passage: 2 Kings 5:1-19a Date: 2 August 2026 Speaker: David Montgomery Summary: In today's sermon, we explore the story of Naaman, a respected military leader who, despite his status, faced a life-altering struggle with leprosy. Through the eyes of a young captive girl, we see how even the most powerful can be humbled and healed by faith, reminding us that true transformation often comes from unexpected places. This message challenges us to recognize the profound impact of our testimonies, no matter our circumstances. Links: Church Website Watch on YouTube Contact Us
Some of the earliest canals in colonial America, referred to as the Inner Passage, were constructed by enslaved people living in the Lowcountry of South Carolina in the early 1700s. In a paradox of history, for over a hundred years enslaved Black people used these canals, constructed for white plantation owners, to travel southward to freedom in Spanish Florida. In The Inner Passage: An Untold Story of Black Resistance Along a Southern Waterway (MIT Press, 2026), Virginia McGee Richards documents the lost narrative of the Inner Passage through 60 extraordinary photographs of landscapes altered by slavery and portraits of Lowcountry descendants, along with an essay describing her discovery of this untold history. In an accompanying essay, Imani Perry writes about her own journey on the Inner Passage, putting Black resistance to enslavement and Southern history into an immediate context. James Estrin brings decades of insight about photography and the power of visual storytelling to his affecting foreword. Together, these words and images offer a powerful living map of history. On this edition of Free City Radio we hear directly from Alex Nelson, a frontline housing researcher in London, Ontario who is actively working to bridge the social and economic gaps between the many researchers looking at the crisis along with those holding direct frontline experience on the ground. Alex speaks to the active policy decisions by successive Liberal and Conservative governments who have failed not only to address the crisis but have propelled the depths of the crisis in the context of the financialization of housing. Thank you to researcher and educator Jayne Malenfant for making this connection originally. The music track is Passage by Anarchist Mountains. Our poet moves from his scholastic and even (medieval) scientific opening of PARADISO into his invocation . . . to Apollo? This passage has often embarrassed Dante scholars who feel the need to excuse various pieces of it.But we can let those pieces stand as part of the polyvocality of the text.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we move back and forth from the Christian to the pagan as we walk through this second part of Dante's opening lines of PARADISO.Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:11] My English translation of PARADISO, Canto I, Lines 13 - 36. If you'd like to read along or continue the conversation with me via a comment on this episode, please find its entry on my website, markscarbrough.com.[03:09] This passage embarrasses too many Dante scholars.[09:14] This passage is polyvocal, a two-part fugue or invention.[17:59] These two voices lead to dissonances in the passage.[23:36] Did Dante intend these dissonances?[25:20] Three small dissonances: Dante crowns himself, fights in an arena, and find his worth in two places at once.[28:32] Marsyas, a comedic tragedy.[32:01] The flame of the tongue, Pentecost, or maybe Ulysses.[34:48] A high-toned, perhaps red-flag reference to Cyrrha.[35:55] An inaccurate but telling reference to Parnassus.[39:07] Rereading the passage: PARADISO, Canto I, lines 13 - 36.

Does 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 really teach a secret pre-tribulation rapture? For generations, many Christians have viewed this passage as one of the clearest biblical proofs that the Church will be removed from the world before the Great Tribulation. But is that what Paul actually meant? In Episode 3 of Top 10 Most Controversial Verses: Eschatology Edition, Matt Plett examines the famous “caught up” passage and challenges one of modern evangelicalism’s most influential assumptions. Rather than describing believers escaping the earth, Paul may instead be portraying the public, victorious arrival of Christ and the resurrection of the dead. Exploring the meaning of “meeting the Lord in the air,” Roman historical background, resurrection themes, and the wider biblical context, this episode takes a fresh look at one of the most debated texts in Bible prophecy.

EPISODE 240 Human life is rarely defined by permanence. It is instead defined by change. You do not live in static conditions. You live your life in dynamic conditions. A career begins and ends. Relationships form and dissolve. Health changes. Beliefs evolve. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) disrupt industries. You move through periods of uncertainty in the chaos of change before your life stabilizes into something new. Between every significant “before” and “after” exists an interesting space: called the “passage.” A “passage” is the ambiguous space between two change events. A “passage” is a psychological, emotional, intellectual, relational, and spiritual interval space between what was and what will become. A “passage” is often where your most important personal growth actually occurs. How can you use effective use “passages” when they occur your own life? Reacting to “passages” and change in a positive way can help you create a positive impact in your personal and professional life. Send us Fan MailRELENTLESSPart 2 | The God Of Another ChanceSenior Pastor Keith StewartJuly 26, 2026Have you ever wondered if God still listens when the mess you're in is entirely your own fault? Jonah wasn't running toward God—he was running away. Even after God rescued him, his heart still had a long way to go. Yet God refused to give up on him. This weekend in RELENTLESS: The God Who Won't Give Up on People, we'll look beyond the famous fish to discover the real miracle of Jonah chapter 2. What if God's greatest work isn't simply rescuing us from our circumstances—but patiently transforming us through grace upon grace? If you've ever struggled with failure, self-righteousness, or wondered whether God could still use someone like you, this message is for you. Join us this Sunday at Springcreek Church or watch online. You may discover that you've been living inside Jonah's story longer than you realized.Discussion Questions Have you ever been absolutely convinced you were right, only to discover later that you had completely misunderstood the situation? What happened? Digging Into the Passage 1. Read Jonah 2 aloud together. What stands out to you after hearing the sermon that you may never have noticed before? 2. Jonah repeatedly thanks God for rescuing him, yet never explicitly confesses his rebellion. Why do you think that omission is significant?3. Compare Jonah's prayer with Psalm 51 or Psalm 32. What differences do you notice between David's prayers and Jonah's? 4. The sermon suggested that Jonah stopped running because he couldn't run anymore—not because his heart had fully changed. Have you ever obeyed God before your heart completely caught up? What did that experience teach you? Applying the Message 5. The sermon said: "The greatest miracle in Jonah chapter 2 isn't that a fish keeps a man alive. It's that God keeps loving a prophet who still doesn't love what God loves." How does that statement change the way you think about grace? 6. Why do you think it's often easier to recognize other people's sins than our own? 7. Jonah could receive grace but struggled to extend it. Why is that such a common struggle for religious people? 8. The sermon suggested this progression: Repentance → Grace → Transformation (what we expect) vs. Grace → more Grace → still more Grace → eventuallyTransformationHow has your own spiritual journey reflected that second pattern?Personal Reflection Pastor Keith shared that after nearly fifty years of ministry, he continues to discover how relentless God's grace has been throughout his life. Looking back over your own story, where can you now see God's grace pursuing you—even before you fully understood it? Is there an area of your life where you're more like Jonah than you'd like to admit? What would it look like to pray, "Lord, show me the truth about myself"? Close by sharing one way you've experienced God's grace recently and pray that God would help each person become not only a recipient of grace but also someone through whom that grace "spills over" into the lives of others.
On this edition of Free City Radio we feature a long format conversation with Latin American historian Alexander Aviña. Alex speaks about the current US neo-colonial designs for the region, but how that exists in a historical context. Also Alex critically speaks to a topic that I have been wanting to see expressed more widely which is around the ways that the experiences of thousands of activists and human rights observers from both Canada and the US impacted cultures in those respective countries. The music track is Passage by Anarchist Mountains. Title: A Future of Redemption Preacher: Caleb Morell Series: God's Future for His People Passage: Isaiah 59:1-21
When did we need life to be so predictable and safe that it siphoned all the adventure and aliveness out? The antidote is questions and initiations to open the mystery back up by challenging everything we think we know. And our guest today, Lincoln Stoller, is here to invite us to some interesting perspectives. Join us to find out more! Lincoln Stoller is a mountaineer, physicist, computer scientist, entrepreneur, psychotherapist, hypnotherapist and neuropsychologist. Lincoln was born later in life to parents who were both artists who provided him support, motivation and encouragement to be creative, but not much direction to pursue those. He was rebellious, pushed boundaries and resentfully attended public school, constantly questioning the limitations taught in classrooms by his teachers. Lincoln preferred real danger like what he found in his introduction to mountaineering over fabricated danger. With time and maturity, Lincoln learned that if you’re going to be in more and more dangerous situations, the consequences of your mistakes get increasingly serious. Lincoln Stoller is also a bestselling, award-winning author. While writing both his first book “The Learning Project – Rites of Passage” he spoke to a lot of people who went through rites of passage, and they said several important things, one of which was to find mentors. Lincoln now works from his home on Vancouver Island, to provide counseling, consulting and brain training to achieve goals, relieve stress, and help you to redefine your future. Watch or listen to the show to learn tips to help you achieve goals, relieve stress, and redefine your future. You’re Invited! He works remotely worldwide and in-person on Vancouver Island, Canada. He addresses short-term mental health situations dealing with symptoms of anxiety, emotional distress, depression, and trauma due to difficult relationships or ill health. He is especially interested in people who are changing or creating things. He does not subscribe to any psychotherapeutic modality and instead work with each person’s unique issues, strengths, weaknesses, and situations. What you want to do and are able to do are all that he focuses on. While he is interested in mental and physical diagnoses he is not directed by them; his response to both is, “How can you benefit from dealing with this?” Lincoln offers a 3-level sliding scale based on whether you are insured, employed, both or neither. Under some conditions he will accept a lower or request a higher fee. He lists his rates in US dollars. He offers a free, introductory consultation which you can schedule on that website. Dave Brisbin 7.26.26 Played high school football my first two years. Bookish kid trying to fit in, never got off the bench in league play. But I could learn that playbook. Knew it cover to cover better than the starters. Took some nerdy pride in that. Small and fast, they put me at tight end and during a training scrimmage, quarterback called an end around. I knew that play cold: two steps off the line, planted, spun around across the backfield, quarterback fading into view, ball suspended in my path, slapped against my chest. Clamped down and turned back toward the line. Perfectly executed. But in my mind, the play was over. No more lines on the page. Holding the ball with absolutely no idea what to do next. A big linebacker showed me. I had focused on what I could understand, but everything it means to be a football player starts where the playbook ends. The parts we can read and memorize are not why we go to football games. What we do when nothing is telling us what to do…that's worth a ticket. In real life, though, excitement turns to panic when we can't see the path ahead. It's an honest mistake. We see the path snaking behind, choices and events like stones in a lawn, and we imagine the future laid out in front of us as well… destiny, fate, God ordained…if we could just get a glimpse. But wise man say the path is made by walking on it. Life is not a worn path in the woods, stretching out behind and before. It's an adventure, a masted ship at sea. You see the wake behind, ahead only trackless ocean. A cloud of possible futures, constantly shifting with each choice/event. We look to religion, its scripture, laws, beliefs, rituals—playbook and promise. If we follow the book, we'll be safe. Saved. It may actually seem to work for awhile, until we suddenly find ourselves holding the ball with no idea what to do next. Religion puts the play in motion. Jesus shows us how to exceed the playbook and run downfield with the ball. Life begins where the playbook ends. Why we buy the ticket. The way ahead is trackless ocean, a field of linebackers. Frightening. We could get in trouble. But that's how you know it's an adventure.

There have been many tributes this week to our dear colleague Edward Stourton, who died last weekend at the age of 68. They've come from across the media, from the churches and faith communities he covered for so long, and from listeners who simply trusted his voice on a Sunday morning. William Crawley looks back at his extraordinary contribution to religious broadcasting. Also in the programme, Andy Burnham's first visit as prime minister was to a Catholic run homeless shelter in London called the Passage. He made his first pledge as PM to end rough sleeping. People familiar with his work as mayor of Greater Manchester will know it's a promise he made when he was elected in 2017. Emily Buchanan visits a project set up by a Christian charity in the city to hear about his track record there and his ambition for the country. Every day, dozens of Palestinian patients from the occupied West Bank cross into Israel for desperately needed specialised medical care they can't get at home. Waiting to drive them to hospital are Israeli volunteers who have increased in number since the October 7th attacks in 2023. Since the war started, it's become an increasingly rare space for Israelis and Palestinians to speak and build trust. A meeting of two worlds amid the trauma of war. Naomi Scherbel-Ball has been joining the patients and volunteers for the journeys from the checkpoints to hospitals in Israel. Living in Seal Beach, California, Zac has built his life around one central conviction: the greatest adventure isn't paddling to Catalina or riding bicycles down the California coast—it's becoming the husband and father God created you to be.In this conversation, Ned sits down with Zac Ernst to explore what it looks like to intentionally pursue God, your wife, your children, and your own formation as a man. From the opening minutes discussing dreams and how God still speaks today, the conversation quickly moves into entrepreneurship, margin, fatherhood, adventure, raising teenagers, discipling children, and the loneliness epidemic facing modern men.Zac shares how building businesses wasn't primarily about money—it was about creating enough freedom to be present at every game, school event, and important moment in his children's lives. He explains the family values acronym “GraceFi,” why adventure slows time down with kids, and why fathers should become students of their children's hearts instead of trying to make them into younger versions of themselves. One of the most powerful moments comes when Zac explains the transition every Christian parent eventually faces: moving from telling children about Jesus to revealing Jesus through a life of answered prayer, faithful obedience, and authentic dependence on God.The conversation concludes with Zac sharing the heart behind Pursuit—a nationwide movement helping men fight isolation through community, physical challenge, spiritual growth, and honest relationships. This episode is packed with practical wisdom for fathers who want to raise resilient kids, build intentional families, and become the kind of men whose lives point people toward Jesus.5 Questions This Episode AnswersHow do fathers build deeper relationships with teenage children? How do I help my kids develop their own faith instead of simply borrowing mine? What should fathers do when their kids don't enjoy the same interests they do?How can entrepreneurship create more freedom for family life? How do Christian men build authentic friendships with other men?---------Check out Zac's Christian men's fitness and fellowship program Pursuit:www.joinpursuit.coJoin a nationwide 90-Day Challenge with Pursuit in August 2026 - or anytime!Pursuit 90 Day Challenge---------The Dream Journal App---------Check Out the Program Talked About: Genesis by Rise Up KingsThis episode is sponsored by Genesis - a Rite of Passage by Rise Up KingsOrder The Adventure of Fatherhood children's book hereCheck out the TEDx----------Want to learn more about The Adventure of Fatherhood?www.adventureoffatherhood.comwww.rebelandcreate.comEach week Ned sits down with a dad and asks him to open up his field notes and share with other men who find themselves on the Adventure of Fatherhood.
