Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

If we're going to be equipped for real life, we have to see how Christ actually prepares us to face the unavoidable brutalities of life. We've been looking at how faith in Christ concretely and profoundly changes us. And in Romans 8, we get to the subject of suffering. It's absolutely crucial if we're going to be equipped in any spiritual way for real life, to see how Christ helps us in our sufferings. This text gives us three things: 1) it gives us a warning about suffering, 2) it gives us three resources for suffering, and 3) it tells us how we can be sure those resources will work. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on December 10, 2006. Series: In Christ Jesus: How the Spirit Transforms Us. Scripture: Romans 8:13-27. Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

When I first embraced the Christian faith, there were a number of things in my life that profoundly needed changing. But nothing seemed to work until some Christian writers took me to Romans 6, 7 and 8.  When I began to understand the teaching of these chapters, my life began to change. In this brief series, I'm sharing these teachings with you as we ask this question: how does faith in Christ actually lead to real change in one's life? In Romans 8, we see that in Jesus, you get three things: 1) you get the freedom to know yourself, 2) you get a new method to change yourself, and 3) you get a new power to be yourself. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on December 3, 2006. Series: In Christ Jesus: How the Spirit Transforms Us. Scripture: Romans 8:1-13. Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

How does change really happen in somebody's life? And how does faith in Christ concretely and practically lead to change?  In Romans 7 we see, in very starkly and shockingly realistic terms, a depiction of the human heart. And what we really see is the very heart that any principles about change have to be applied to. When we look at Romans 7, I think we learn three things: 1) what our biggest problem is, 2) what won't address that problem, and 3) what will. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 26, 2006. Series: In Christ Jesus: How the Spirit Transforms Us. Scripture: Romans 7:1-9, 18-25. In this episode, I speak with Husband, Father, Grandfather, former Pastor, teacher, elder, small group leader, current Chaplain for Young Adults, and Author Sam Wegner on The Weight of The Wait. Listen as Sam shares his touching story of heartbreak and hope. He encourages listeners to see that affliction is how to know that we continue to trust God because he is the one in control. It is impossible to please God without waiting, however; we can trust that God is good and when we struggle to believe this, ask him to reshape our definition of good.  Prayer: Lord, change me so that I can find peace in the storm, continue to seek your face, and fulfill your purpose for me. Find Sam :    the website  If you are feeling lead to help Sam and Crystal on this journal you can do so HERE.   Scripture: Romans 8:24-26 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.   Isaiah 40:31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.   Psalm 27:13-14 I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.   Job 13:15 Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him; I will surely defend my ways to his face.   1 Corinthians 16:11 No one, then, should treat him with contempt. Send him on his way in peace so that he may return to me. I am expecting him along with the brothers.   Psalm 119:68 You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.   Psalm 119:71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.   Daniel 3:17-18 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliverus from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty's hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."   Mark 9:23-25 "'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for one who believes."  Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again."   Additional Scripture: Hebrews 11, Psalm 34:17-20, Psalm 34:19, 2 Corinthians 12:9, 1 Corinthians 10:13 REGISTER @ CFLEX Academy Arts Enrichment   Listen to our sister podcast:  Abundantly Rooted   Other Resourses: Grab your Artza Subscription Box and bring home a bit of Israel.  use promo code: ARTZAKRISTINARISINGER for 25% off   Check out our Linktree   Get the Books:  Life After Losing A Loved One: How to Turn Grief Into Hope Strength and Purpose Adventures of LiLy and Izzy Bee: The Imagination Journey

December 1, 2025Romans 7 teaches that following Jesus isn't about obeying God out of pressure — it's about loving God out of freedom. Paul uses the picture of a marriage covenant to show that when we died with Christ, we were released from the law and united to Him in new life. Instead of producing a harvest of rebellion, our union with Jesus now produces a harvest of good fruit. This message explores the difference between religion and relationship, and how the Holy Spirit empowers us to live in love, not legalism. Real transformation flows not from trying harder, but from living connected to Christ.Scripture:Romans 7:1-6Resources:FaceBook- FCC Young AdultsInstagram- @fccyaEmail- fccyadmin@fccsantamaria.orgWebsite- fccsantamaria.org

Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

As we end our series on the Holy Spirit, we come to maybe the most astonishing thing the Holy Spirit does for us. We've looked at a number of well-known things the Holy Spirit does in us and for us. He calls us and enables us to believe. He regenerates us, creates Christ-like character in us, unites us inside the church, and empowers us with his gifts so we can serve people around us. But now we look at a passage that tells us about the ultimate, the final thing the Holy Spirit does for us.  Let's notice from the text 1) what the Spirit will do for us in the future, 2) what the Spirit, therefore, can do for us in the present, and 3) how we can let the Spirit do that in our lives. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 12, 2010. Series: The Holy Spirit. Scripture: Romans 8:17-25. We have read through much of the Story of the Scripture, we have read Stephen, Paul, and Peter's summaries of the Story of Scripture, and in Romans, we get to study the apostle Paul's theology of the Story of Scripture. In this letter to the church in Rome, Paul calls the Jewish and Gentile Christians to unity, faith, and obedience to Jesus. In the first few chapters, he reminds his Jewish brothers of what all of humanity was called to in Genesis 1, what we all lost in Genesis 3, and how Jesus fully and finally redeems all who receive him in faith.

Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

If you've ever read a translation like the King James Version, you know when you get to the word “patience,” the older English translation will use the word “longsuffering.” This is because the Greek word for patience literally means to suffer a long time, which doesn't sound very promising.  What it's saying is that patience is the trait by which you are able to bear up under difficulty without giving up or giving in to bitterness. There are two kinds of patience: there's patience under difficult circumstances and there's patience with people. And Romans 12 is a remarkable passage about how to be patient and gracious to people who are opposing you.  This passage gives us 1) a principle of showing patience, 2) some ideas on how to practice it, and 3) how to get the power to do it. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on May 2, 2010. Series: The Real Signs of the Spirit. Scripture: Romans 12:9-21. Romans 6 is a call to live like the resurrection actually changed us. Paul reminds believers that sin's power is broken — we're no longer slaves, no longer controlled by what once ruled us. Through Christ's death and resurrection, we have the freedom to live new lives, not by our own strength but by grace. Sanctification means dying to sin and coming alive to righteousness — a daily choice to yield our bodies, desires, and habits to God. Real faith doesn't just believe in Jesus' victory; it lives from it.Scripture:Romans 6:1-14Resources:FaceBook- FCC Young AdultsInstagram- @fccyaEmail- fccyadmin@fccsantamaria.orgWebsite- fccsantamaria.org

Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

How do you know whether you're just trying to be good, or whether the Holy Spirit has really brought transformation into your life?  The way to know is to look at what's called the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. There's a whole set of characteristics of a supernaturally changed heart. We're looking now at the first of these: joy. Romans 5 tells us three things about joy. It tells us 1) joy is important, 2) Christian joy is unique, and 3) where Christian joy comes from. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on April 18, 2010. Biblical Talks  In this episode of Biblical Talks, SD and Lady V dive into Exodus 13:17-22 from the New International Version. This passage beautifully showcases God's unwavering love for His people, a love that continues to be just as powerful and present today. And that is even more reason for us to look to God.  Now, in the passage mentioned, the people of God lost faith. Even though God rescued them from Egypt and freed them from slavery, they quickly forgot His kindness, mercy, dedication, and above all, His love.  When we turn to God for help and guidance, He always has our best interests in mind, even when it doesn't make sense to us.  With that in mind, have you read Exodus 13:17-22?  If so -- what are your thoughts? This is your time to receive the Gift of Salvation through Christ Jesus.  Now, you may be wondering, "Why do I need that?" Oh, I'm so glad you asked. The Bible says, that because  Adam ate fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil -- he released sin into the world.  And ultimately, Adam's sin brought death and death spread to everyone.  No doubt, you may be thinking, "Of course, everyone is going to die." But, my question to you is "Where will you spend eternity?" Because there is life after death. In fact, when you die you go to one of two places -- heaven or hell.  Also, it is important to understand that Adam's sin also brought an eternity in hell. But for those who choose not to receive the free gift of eternal life. Thus, you must make that choice before you take your last breath.  Romans 5:17 New Living Translation says,  “For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God's wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.”  To sum it all up, Romans 6:23 New Living Translation says,  “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”  So, if you are reading this, don't let another day go by without receiving this life-changing gift.  Scripture   Romans 10:8-10 New Living Translation says,  “8 …“The message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart.” And that message is the very message about faith that we preach:  9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.”  Salvation Prayer  Lord Jesus, I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins. I ask You to forgive me. I want to follow You, Jesus. I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead. By faith, I ask You to be my Lord and Savior. Romans 6:15-23 confronts us with a profound truth: we will serve someone or something, whether we acknowledge it or not. This passage challenges the dangerous notion that grace gives us license to continue in sin, asking the piercing question: are we to sin because we're under grace rather than law? The answer rings clear—absolutely not. We're presented with only two masters: sin leading to death, or obedience leading to righteousness. There's no third option, no middle ground where we can blend worldly living with Christian faith. The transformation that comes through Christ isn't an addition to our existing life—it's a complete metamorphosis. We see this illustrated through the story of Elisha, who burned his oxen and plows, eliminating any possibility of retreat to his former life. Similarly, Jesus' disciples left their nets, their boats, and even their father immediately when called. This radical commitment stands in stark contrast to the lukewarm Christianity described in Revelation 3, where the church of Laodicea was neither hot nor cold, prompting Christ to say He would spit them from His mouth. The parable of the sower reminds us that only one in four who hear the word will produce lasting fruit. The question we must wrestle with is this: which soil are we? Are we clinging to escape plans and old relationships that keep us tethered to our former slavery, or are we willing to take that first step of obedience, trusting God will reveal the next?### Sermon Notes**Scripture**: Romans 6:15-23**Introduction**: - Rick, a pastor at Hope Church, continues the study of Romans, focusing on Romans 6. - Reminder that they preach through books of the Bible, emphasizing the importance of scripture-based preaching.**Key Points**:1. **Understanding Sin and Grace**:  - The question Paul raises: Are we to sin because we are under grace, not the law?  - Emphasis on morality within the law and grace.2. **Analogy of Slavery**:  - Paul uses the analogy of being slaves to sin versus slaves to righteousness.  - Bob Dylan's illustration: "You gotta serve somebody."3. **Transformation through Salvation**:  - Christianity is not just an addition but a transformation of life.  - The old self versus the new self: Embrace becoming a slave to righteousness.4. **Challenges in Christian Walk**:  - Temptation to mix worldly views and new belief systems with Christianity.  - Importance of separating from past sinful lifestyles and friendships.5. **Practical Illustrations**:  - Rick's personal testimony about radical change after accepting Christ.  - Importance of cutting off past connections that hinder spiritual growth.6. **Reasons for Struggling with Sin**:  - Continually resurrecting old sinful behaviors.  - Lack of suffering or commitment in serving God wholeheartedly.  - Not eliminating the past life entirely.7. **Biblical References to Commitment**:  - Examples of Elisha burning his plow and the disciples leaving everything to follow Jesus.  - The rich young ruler's story: Heart's attachment to possessions.8. **Fruit of Righteousness**:  - Encouragement to analyze life for spiritual fruit.  - Belonging entirely to Christ results in sanctification and eternal life.**Practical Applications**:1. **Cut Ties with Sin**:   - Identify and remove old habits and relationships that hinder spiritual growth.2. **Embrace Transformation**:   - Acknowledge that faith in Christ leads to a completely changed life, not just an addition to current beliefs.3. **Serve with Zeal**:   - Dedicate the same energy formerly given to sin towards serving God.4. **Evaluate Your Life**:   - Regularly assess if your life reflects the fruit of righteousness or if it's still tied to the old self.5. **Take Steps of Faith**:   - Listen for God's direction and take incremental steps towards fulfilling His call.**Discussion Questions**:1. How does understanding that we are under grace, not the law, change your perspective on sin and righteousness?2. What are some steps you can take to ensure you're living as a "slave to righteousness" rather than a slave to sin?3. Are there aspects of your past life that you are still holding onto, and how can you fully commit them to God?4. How has your commitment to Christ transformed your everyday life and decisions?5. Discuss a time when taking a small step of faith led to a significant spiritual victory or growth in your life.

Your spiritual gifts determine how God wants to use your life.  Are you willing to allow God to use your life, for His glory, to build the kingdom of God?  Are you willing to say “yes” to God?Main Points:1. The Bible has a lot to say about spiritual gifts.  There are at least 20 of them listed in the Bible.  We don't have time to define them all today, but you can read about them in these passages of Scripture:  Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, and Ephesians 4.  2. Peter contends that each of us has received at least one spiritual gift when he states, “As each one has received a gift.” These gifts of grace are to be distinguished from natural talents, skills, and abilities.3. What this tells us is that God wants to use our lives uniquely. He has gifted and enabled us to serve Him and others. God intends for your life to be a blessing to others. You have a particular role in the work of God, and by the Holy Spirit, God has given you a gift to make this happen.Today's Scripture Verses:1 Peter 4:10-11 - “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.”Romans 12:6 – “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”1 Corinthians 7:7 – “But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.”Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

Jesus Christ was not just born. He had an existence before he was born; and therefore, Jesus was not just born—he was given to us. Jesus is the one gift that, if you have it, you have all the other gifts. Jesus is the one gift that, if you reject it, you lose all other gifts. The apostle Paul says that Jesus is the inexpressible gift. By thinking about Jesus as a gift, I think we'll come to understand more of who he is and how we should relate to him. So let's look at three essential qualities of a gift: 1) gifts are surprises, 2) gifts can be insulting, and 3) gifts are immensely valuable. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on December 19, 1993. Series: Understanding Jesus. Scripture: Romans 8:32.
