Cultists 2024's Abigail isn't a "Remake" of Dracula's Daughter. To call it a "Reimagining" would even feel like a stretch. Instead it takes just the core concept of Dracula having a daughter and builds a blood splattered "Monster In The House" action comedy from it. Scout Gillett "Tough Touch, Scout Gillett's sophomore album, emerges from years of relentless motion—a period the Missouri-born, Brooklyn-bred, and now LA-based artist describes as one of growth, vulnerability, and learning to trust her instincts. Set for release in 2026 via Slouch Records, the album explores the pain that vulnerability brings, the fragility of life, and the challenge of finding oneself within a relationship—all rendered with the gritty, glittery cosmic twang that makes Scout's sound so singular." This week's episode of The Interviews, the spin-off show that rounds up our chats with film folk, is a belter. First, Chris Hewitt chats accents and auditions and more with Theo James, star of The Fuze [1:36 - 17:51 approx], and then Jamie Graham is joined for some trash talk by The Pope Of Trash himself, John Waters, just in time for the launch of a new season at the BFI Southbank called Trash! The Wildest Films You've Ever Seen. [19:02 - 32:45] Finally, we have an extended excerpt from our Ready Or Not: Here I Come spoiler special interview [34:18 - 52:52 approx] with that film's directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, which features strong, unbleeped language from the off, as well as a deep dive into that movie's twists and turns. So be advised! And also, of course, enjoy.

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have cemented themselves as subversive filmmakers with broad audience appeal. The duo garnered positive attention after directing segments of 2012's V/H/S, but it was the Searchlight horror film READY OR NOT that took them to the next level. The film became a cult classic and earned nearly $58 million at the global box office. In this interview, we talk about the organizational challenges of a co-directing partnership, the benefits of budget limitations, their new film, and much more. Want more? Woman of the Hour (Kendrick 2023) We have great appreciation of Anna Kendrick as a talent. And this film does have a very rare original take on the serial killer genre, unfortunately for us it did not coalesce into a meaningful film watching experience. The film is exactly the sum of its parts and it landed on us accordingly. Our guess is that in trying to avoid making problematic choices, which we support, Kendrick relegated her film to being one of cromulence. We hope she keeps working behind the camera as well as in front. There is lots more of our podcast! Please listen, review, subscribe, and tell your friends. Bournemouth and Sunderland cancelled each other out at Vitality Stadium in a frustrating 1-1 draw that did little for either side's European ambitions. On a night where both teams showed flashes of quality, the game never truly found its rhythm — broken up by fouls, stoppages and a series of baffling refereeing decisions that left players, managers and supporters exasperated. Was it a tactical stalemate? Or did poor officiating rob the match of any real flow? We go over the weekend's action before previewing Cherries' BIG clash against the Bees. Our clashes against Brentford suggests recent history is not on our side. With an abysmal record against the West London. side, can the Andoni Iraola's side finally turn the tide, or will old habits die hard? Strange Darling (Mollner 2023) What a breath of fresh air! A film that is presented non-linearly for a reason! Reports of the death of nightlife may be greatly exaggerated. In recent months we've heard of new clubs opening in Peckham and Brixton, an audio upgrade at Tola and plans for a DIY venue in Catford. Even the Old Blue Last is good again!Yet the official figures paint a depressing picture, with hundreds of venues lost, and thousands of jobs. So which story is right? To inspect the situation, Party Lines author Ed Gillett returns to the podcast fresh from his contribution to the London Nightlife Taskforce report. The report's 23 recommendations are the result of a year-long consultation following the axing of the night czar role previously held by Amy Lamé. Ed talks to us about noise, crime, gentrification, the closure of Corsica Studios, and his concern that the discourse of decline might be doing more harm than good.Plus, Chal reports back from the Green Party Party at Heaven, a fundraiser-slash-rally for Zack Polanski's insurgent electoral movement. Are we really letting Lobsta B lead the green revolution? Get full access to No Tags at notagspodcast.substack.com/subscribe

Following the career of the Irish lace designer and inspector Emily Anderson (1856-1948), Irish Lacemaking: Art, Industry and Cultural Practice (Bloomsbury, 2025) by Dr. Molly-Claire Gillett traces a network of designers, makers, organizations and institutions involved in the late-19th and early-20th-century Irish lace industry and explores their contemporary relevance.Dr. Gillett maps the Irish lace industry's connection to stakeholders such as the British Department of Science and Art, the Cork School of Art, The Irish Agricultural Organisation Society and the Irish Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction, pairing a close study of patterns and techniques with an investigation of broader issues in design education, philanthropy and women's professionalization. Concluding with a consideration of contemporary Irish lacemaking – now proudly claimed as an element of Ireland's intangible cultural heritage – Gillett tells the story of a 20th-century shift in the conception of lace design as 'art for industry', and lacemaking as an economic necessity to both practices as expressions of identity, creativity and community-building.Richly illustrated and framed within the narrative of Anderson's life and career as a woman designer and civil servant during a pivotal moment in Irish history, Irish Lacemaking is an essential resource for students and researchers in craft, women's history and Irish Studies. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Abigail (Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett 2024) Directed by Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, who have made very solid Scream requels and the really excellent Ready or Not, we had high hopes for Abigail. With lots of promise and overall good audience reactions we were unfortunately very disappointed. Abigail is bad. Real bad. No character development, no movitations, no sense of geography, and any even remote potential for fear or suspense was undermined by the marketing. Any hope that it would challenge or disrupt tropes and stereotypes, given that the vampire is a girl, are compromised completely by the film's ending. It is reasonably watchable as a second-screen film, or something to have on in the background, which is not meant to be a compliment. There is lots more of our podcast! What if everything you've been taught about sleep, parenting, and discipline isn't biologically normal, just culturally common? In this powerful episode of The Art of Raising Humans, Kyle and Sara Wester sit down with Tracy Gillett, founder of Raised Good, to explore what it really means to raise children through connection instead of control — from infancy through the teen years. Together, they unpack the truth about:• sleep as a developmental milestone (not something to train)• attachment and emotional safety across every stage of childhood• navigating parenting through difference seasons — babies, kids, and teens• authenticity as the foundation for connection• why closeness matters more than compliance• how to repair after rupture and rebuild trust• letting go of fear-based discipline in favor of relationship-based parenting Tracy shares her journey from veterinarian to global parenting advocate and explains why modern parenting advice often contradicts a child's biology and how tuning into your instincts can transform your experience as a parent. This episode is a gentle but powerful invitation to step off the parenting treadmill, release unrealistic expectations, and reconnect to what matters most: your relationship with your child. If you're questioning mainstream parenting practices…If sleep struggles are wearing you down…If the teen years feel confusing or overwhelming…If you're craving a more peaceful, grounded approach… This conversation will meet you there. In other words, if you shop regularly on Amazon, you can support my work by clicking on any of the books I linked and then searching for whatever you want to purchase. Thanks for your support.
