In Acts 5, we see Peter and the apostles beaten for preaching the gospel. Their response? They rejoiced that they were counted as worthy to suffer dishonor for the name of Jesus. And so what is our calling as believers? That through the word of our testimonies, we too may suffer with joy, overcome by the blood of the Lamb, and do it all for the glory of God!

Did you know that the second Friday in January is known as “Quitter's Day?” Studies have shown that by this day each year, 80% of all New Year's Resolutions have been abandoned. I think one reason for this is that we don't plan for failure. We tend to be overly optimistic about how easy it will be to start exercising or stop spending. Habits are hard to break. That's why they're called habits in the first place. Mike Tyson famously said that “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” What matters is what we do after getting hit. Join us this week on A Time to Sharpen as we discuss getting punched in the face…and how a good dose of reality sauce will actually make us stronger in the end.

The crucifixion is terrible to read. The whole thing actually, from beginning to end. All the events that took place…unsettling. I don't want Jesus to have suffered. The anger I feel when I think of those priests and teachers and elders. The lies they told. Their blood lust. They were supposed to be the ones you could trust. Goodness and morality were key parts of their job. Yet they were the crowd that shouted to crucify. If only things had been different. If only Pilate had refused. But here's the thing. It had to be this way. Jesus came to do one thing. And this was it. It all had to happen. Each piece was crucial. This timing was everything. None of it was by chance. No coincidences. Jesus had to die. Otherwise, we would. This was the only way to defeat death. The only way to bring salvation to sinners. “When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. ‘I am innocent of this man's blood', he said. ‘It is your responsibility!'All the people answered, ‘Let his blood be on us and on our children!'” Matthew 27:24-25Continue reading the rest of the show notes on our website Nothin' But Fine.---Check out the Nothin' But Fine blog and website.Follow us on social media: Instagram Facebook Twitter YouTube Want everything in your inbox? Should stars use concert stages and football fields as platforms for their politics or policy activism? John Cougar Mellencamp made news this week for leaving the stage after being challenged by his fans to “just play music!” rather than proselytizing his public policy views from the stage. Jacki is joined by Jeff Fisher of “Chewing the Fat with Jeff Fisher” to discuss. Jacki argues that the stage and field are not the *performer's* platform, and that having to suffer through Mellencamp's sermon should be a breach of contract for a ticket purchaser who thought they were exchanging big dollars for a performance of “Hurts So Good!”
In “Hurts So Good,” Pastor Robert Madu shares from the idea that we often want God as the loving Savior, but not as the corrective Father. Will your current level of discipline sustain the person He is calling you to be? Be encouraged today that as we grow in our discipline — we become unshakable.
