We have finally reached the last episode and the final stage of mastery. Sadly, at the 8th Stage of Mastery, we are at a point where there is very little we can say. As Buddha puts it in the Diamond Sutra, “Words cannot express the truth; that which words express is not the truth.” (Ch. 21) Or as Lao Tzu puts in in the first lines of the Tao Te Ching, “The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao.” (Ch. 1). But we give it a shot. In summary, the 8 stages are:LOWER SELF -- DYSFUNCTIONALStage 1: Physical (aka Gross)Stage 2: Dysfunction (aka Emotional or Astral)Stage 3: Recovery (aka Rational or Mental)PIVOT/BRIDGEStage 4: Healthy (aka Transpersonal)HIGHER SELF -- MASTERYStage 5: Cosmic (aka Holy Spirit)Stage 6: Universal (aka Buddha/Illumination/Subtle)Stage 7: Divine (aka Transcendental/Enlightened/Causal)Stage 8: Fully Liberated (non-describable/non-doing/Wu Wu Wei)I should say that I am indebted to my late teacher George Falcon for much of the ideation behind this model and my thinking on levels of consciousness more generally. Though many other ancient masters and my own practice have shaped my understanding, he was the one that first introduced it to me. The 6th stage of Mastery is the consciousness of some of the greatest masters to have lived. Jesus, Krishna, Buddha, Lao Tzu, Moses, Zarathustra and Mohammed are a few of the people likely who achieved this level (at least). It goes by many names, depending on the time and the place. For example, the Hindus might have described it as the stage at which the Ajna Or Third-eye Chakra opens. More typically we will call it the stage of Illumination or Universal Consciousness. Mastery is about realizing our full potential in life. It is about acquiring authentic power. It is about remembering that this power belongs to us already. And it is about experience a life free from suffering. Such is the promise offered by masters from Lao Tzu and Buddha through to Jesus and Krishna. The way in which it is acquired varies in the details but, whether it is an Islamic mystic from the Middle Ages, or Cherokee Shaman, a Christian saint or a Jewish luminary, the message is essentially the same. In this episode we unpack what this so-called fourth stage of mastery looks like. It is a particularly interesting stage because it is the pivot point between the bottom three (all of which are forms of dysfunction) and the next three (all of which are forms of mastery). Some traditions call this intuition. Others the heart chakra or Beatrice. But is all more or less the same.Though the rendition is my own and I draw from many other sources, I should say that I am indebted to my late teacher George Falcon for the original the ideation behind this model and my thinking on levels of consciousness more generally. The ancient masters, one after another, have spoken of a state of peace and happiness that is available to each and every one of us. But how do we reach such a state? It turns out this process is typically not a sudden flash of Satori or sudden enlightenment. In most cases it is a process and this process can be marked by a series of stations along the way. In this episode we examine the transition from the second stage to the third stage. The tricks to moving past the dysfunction of Stage 2 are elucidated as well as the features of what Stage 3 or Recovery looks like. In Summary, the 8 stages are as follows:LOWER SELF -- DYSFUNCTIONALStage 1: Physical (aka Gross)Stage 2: Dysfunction (aka Emotional or Astral)Stage 3: Recovery (aka Rational or Mental)PIVOT/BRIDGEStage 4: Healthy (aka Transpersonal)HIGHER SELF -- MASTERYStage 5: Cosmic (aka Holy Spirit)Stage 6: Universal (aka Buddha/Illumination/Subtle)Stage 7: Divine (aka Transcendental/Enlightened/Causal)Stage 8: Fully Liberated (non-describable/non-doing/Wu Wu Wei)I am forever indebted to my late teacher George Falcon for much of the ideation behind this model and my thinking on the nature of the self and levels of consciousness more generally. Much of what you will hear in this series was shared with me by him years ago. In the years since those conversations, I have discovered that he didn't invent this model. Rather he synthesized it from very similar ones used by Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, Christians, Ancient Polynesians, Ancient Egyptians, Indigenous Americans, and many more. It is a universal experience of spiritual advancement to pass stages of some number and these stages, regardless of the tradition, tend to strongly resemble one another. The differences are more with how many stages the tradition breaks them up into. Sometimes there are four, sometimes 10 or 16 or more. Regardless of the number, the ideas and features of the process are more or less the same. Having now studied models from approximately 10 traditions, and investigated my own journey along this path of self-mastery, I am sharing my perspective on these so-called stages of Self-Mastery. In this episode the focus is on what is called the "Recovery" stage. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

From the earliest wisdom teachers to the great living masters of today, we consistently hear the message that ‘you are free’, ‘you do without doing,’ and ‘you are not the self.’ It doesn't matter whether it is Lao Tzu or Krishna, Jesus or Mohammed, Buddha or Rumi, they all share this same insight. But what can they possibly mean? Unfortunately, we have to experience it to understand it. It is impossible to explain in a way the intellect can grasp. Bearing that truth in mind, you can use this extended meditation practice to help you remember who you really are. Can you experience enlightenment right now? The great masters have told that you already have this enlightened state as your essential nature. You've just forgotten. You're just asleep. But then, who are you, really? Unfortunately, it is impossible to answer this question using words or concepts. So today, instead of giving a lecture on who you really are, I am going to guide you in a way that you might just be able to begin to get a sense of it. This model was taught to me by my teacher George Falcon and I have adapted it into a method of contemplation and meditation that you can use to begin to grasp this ancient teaching on the nature of self. It will give you a more intuitive understanding of what it is these masters are talking about when they say things like ‘you are free’, ‘you do without doing,’ and ‘you are not the self.’ You may wonder why it is so important to understand who you really are. It is because this confusion is the source, in one sense, of all your problems in life. Buddha tells us in the Diamond Sutra, for example, that "Nirvāna and samsāra are, for the human mind, merely the ultimate pair of opposites, and like all lesser pairs of opposites, such as ego and nonego, they are unreal. Only in the transcendent state, beyond the domain of opposites, is truth realizable." (The Diamond Sutra and The Sutra of Hui-neng (Kindle Locations 193-196). Shambhala Publications.)But never forget that this is just a model and, as Buddha said many times, these teachings "of the Dharma is to be likened unto a raft." and just like any model or teaching, or Dharma, "the buddha-teaching must be relinquished." (The Diamond Sutra and The Sutra of Hui-neng (Kindle Locations 395-396). Shambhala Publications.)This is a 45 minute version of the Letting Go of Who You Think You Are episode. In one sense, all our problems in life stem from a confusion about who we really are. Buddha is among the most explicit on this point. He speaks repeatedly about how we are not an ego entity, a personality, a being or and individual. He tells us, for example, in The Diamond Sutra, that we “should leave behind all phenomenal distinctions [such as the idea that we are a self] and awaken the thought of the consummation of incomparable enlightenment”. But what does this mean exactly? And how do we awaken this thought? Unfortunately, this is not something we can put into words, as the somersaulting language of the Diamond Sutra attests. But we are told again and again by saints and sages throughout the ages that this experience of our higher self, our true self, is possible. So why not take them at their word and give it a go? Why not take seriously the possibility that this awakening is something we can experience. That is what we are going to do today. In this meditation, you will be guided to a place where you might just be able to get an inkling of the awakening Buddha speaks about. This framework was taught to me by my teacher George Falcon and I have adapted it into a contemplation/meditation practice. While you may not experience satori or the sudden awakening that Zen speaks about, it will at least bring you to a place where you can understand at a more intuitive level what it is these masters are talking about when they say things like ‘you are free’, ‘you do without doing,’ and ‘you are not the self.’Can you experience enlightenment right now? Maybe not but why not try? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Zebediah Rice begins this episode by sharing some of the insights he learned from Peter Wohlleben's best-selling book, “The Hidden Life of Trees.” It turns out that trees do all sorts of extraordinary and almost human-like things. For example, they care for each other, have memories, make friends, think, and talk with each other. And scientists have shown that humans can hear this tree conversation, albeit at an unconscious level. In this episode, Zebediah Rice has selected several clips from his library of recordings of George Falcon's talks where this idea of tree's ability to communicate and remember is discussed and used as a metaphor for the human connection to the divine. In Wohlleben's book we learn that following the lessons from the higher or greater elements in the natural chain from leaf to tree to forest gives each tree the power to realize its full potential. Primarily using Christian language (since that was the audience), but also alluding to Hindu, Buddhist and Taoist concepts, George Falcon explains that, as with individual trees, each of us individual humans, if we follow the rules set out by the universe and allow life to do its job rather than each of us trying to control the details of our fates, can live the best life possible. We are not subject to time, space, motion, or electromagnetism. And we have no beginning or ending or duration. He then goes on to explain who we really are and how to remember that using his metaphor of The Three Bags and the model of Consciousness vs. Awareness. The trick, he explains, is that consciousness is fashioned, by us, to create our experience. We have the power to fashion reality as we wish so why not make it great? We just have to anchor our identity in Awareness and accept the power that is ours by definition. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.

We are not the content of our awareness. And once we realize the truth of that statement we can exercise our power to choose what emotions we want to have, when we want to have them and for how long we would like to feel that way. It includes 1) a 15 minute guided meditation; 2) a brief talk starting a minute 16 where George explains what it means to not be the content of your awareness and how this relates to the sleeping state; and 3) a final circle of sending and receiving loving feelings which you can simulate by imagining you are holding people's hands.
