Wilderness Wanderings
Faith that Choses Reproach

Wilderness Wanderings

By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward (Hebrews 11:24-26). Yesterday, Pastor Anthony ended his devotion on Moses' parents with these lines, “Faith is not lived in the future, but in the present. By time heaven comes round—it'll be too late to try.” That sentence there, “Faith is not lived in the future, but in the present.” This is the kind of faith that the author of Hebrews ascribes to Moses, which he learned from his parents – their words, sure, but certainly also from their actions. Our author wants us to understand something about Moses -- because of that faith, he made a choice. He grew up in Pharaoh's household as the adopted son of the royal princess. He had access to the best luxuries and wisdom and powers of the Egyptian regal court. It was all there at his fingertips: all the papyri of the magicians who could turn staffs into snakes (Exodus 7:12), all the best food and drink, all the pleasures a young man desired, all the training of an Egyptian soldier. But he made a choice. He turned away from it all. Moses chose to identify with God's people rather than with the godless. He chose at great personal cost: loss of wealth, relinquishment of status, and intense mistreatment. He “regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt.” This phrase squishes time together: present, future and further still. Certainly, Moses experienced reproach by identifying himself with the people of God but in doing so he also experienced the reproach of the coming Messiah (that is the present and the future). Our author does this to encourage his readers, in the 1st century and in the 21st century, to make the same choice that Moses made: to accept the reproach that comes from identifying with Christ and with his church (that's the further still, us). He is encouraging us to join Paul in declaring, “I want to join [Christ] in his sufferings. I want to become like him by sharing in his death” (Philippians 3:10 NIRV). Are you willing to make that kind of choice? Are you willing to be identified with a group that declares Jesus is Lord above all the rulers of the world, even when people say, ‘where's the proof'? Are you willing to put some of your hard-earned income towards the mission of God as worked out through his church, even if it costs you that vacation or new vehicle that you are dreaming of? Are you wiling to name among your friends, people whom the world deems undesirable, people who can offer you nothing but friendship? Are you willing to be identified with a group of deeply flawed people who regularly mess up their God given mission? Does your faith enable you to trust Jesus when he said, “Truly I tell you, no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life” (Mark 10:29-30). Does your faith live in the present, in the here and now? As you journey on, go with the blessing of God: May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness: protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing; at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

Although Nibbāna is beyond all description and can not possibly comprehended by the thinking mind through language and concepts, the Buddha still used various similes to convey some idea to us what Nirvāṇa is all about. In particular, many times he compared the eperience of Nibbāna to a fire gone out. However, there's a big problem with that simile nowadays: Our current understanding how fire functions is very different from the theory of fire in ancient India. In our time, after a fire has gone out, we simply regard it as non-existant. But that would be a serious misunderstanding regarding the experience of Nibbāna. The statement that an enlightened person after death doesn't exist anymore has been explicitely rejected by the Buddha as not applicable (of course, to state that he exists is just as inapplicable). In ancient India, fire was regarded as 'clinging' to the fuel dependent on which it burns. When the fire goes out (e.g. through exhaustion of its fuel), the fire is released and enters a non-manifest state. Indian's at the time of the Buddha would not see an extinguished fire as non-existant. Instead, they believed an extinguished fire is simply freed from its entrapment to the fuel, and has entered a state in which it can't be defined or described. Secrets can destroy things. Like the home that the Overton sisters shared with their parents Frank and Nancy near Atlantic City. The fire that killed the girl's parents was ruled an arson. Could it be possible that secrets drove one of the sisters to torch their family's home?   Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us.    This is Season 5, Episode 8. Our book this week is “The Fire She Set” and our guest is Phyllis Mantelli. We will check in with Phyllis after we investigate this fascinating book. We'll also talk about ideas for how anyone can be what I call a different kind of P.I. - not a private investigator like me but a person of impact in your community.   In June of 1974, Leigh Overton Boyd was just 17 years old, the oldest of four sisters. Her world was turned upside down when the condo where her family was living caught fire in the middle of the night. She escaped, and so did her sisters, but both of Leigh's parents died in the fire.  As if that wasn't enough tragedy for them all to deal with, rumors began to swirl that one of the girls purposely set the fire. Attorneys were hired and a lie detector test was given to at least one of the sisters. No one was ever charged in Frank and Nancy's deaths. Leigh was on the brink of adulthood and ready to move into another phase of life. Years passed and the sisters rarely brought up that night. But secrets don't always stay secrets. Not when someone is determined to know the truth.   Proverbs 14:1 ICB   A wise woman strengthens her family. But a foolish woman destroys hers by what she does.   Sometimes what we call foolishness is really rebelliousness. Even accounting for the potential that Nancy was dealing with some form of mental illness, she had lucid periods where she put herself and her own desires above the needs of her children. She did have opportunities to strengthen her family to the extent she was able. When those chances were ignored too many times, tragedy followed.   But did she have the support she needed to make the most of those opportunities? The book made it pretty clear that her husband felt like he'd done what he could but it wasn't too terribly effective. Neighbors and family members knew. There's even a scene in the book where store clerks watched Nancy forget one of her kids in a store, come back drunk, and drive away with her. No one intervened.    Paul tells the church in Galatians 6:2, in the NIrV, “Carry one another's heavy loads. If you do, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Between addiction, possible mental illness, and having several young children to raise it seems as though having someone help bear her burdens might have made quite a difference. We aren't meant to do life alone, but rather in community. Who in your community has a heavy load that you can help lighten? Your help might open a door to share Jesus with them.   Let me know what you thought of this episode! Send me an email a lori@theunlovelytruth.com or message me on social media. Nothing beats the adrenaline rush of being motivated to make a change, but how do you make that change last? Lasting change is hard for us humans, but it's not hard for God. In fact, it's one of the greatest things about having a relationship with God; God's incredible power is always available to us, and it can change us from the inside out. The book of Acts in the Bible tells us about regular people who relied on God to help them change. Their change not only lasted but also caught the attention of people around them, who caught the vision that God could help them change too. So what do you want to change? Let's learn from the first Christians in Acts 2 how to let God's incredible power change us from the inside out. The Unlovely Truth

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 10, 2023 35:00

Most people in Lincoln, Illinois, didn't lock their doors in the 1970's. They weren't worried about murderers roaming around. Mike Hartnett and his wife arrived in town to work at Lincoln College, a private junior college. Both were ready to counsel Lincoln's students and they wondered how much trouble there could possibly be in this peaceful looking small town in 1972. If they'd only known, who knows if they would have gone there at all. Our book this week is “And I Cried, Too “, by Mike Hartnett. This episode's guest is our chaplain here at The Unlovely Truth, Lori Prather. She grew up near where these murders took place, and I grew up nearby in the Midwest. We were both pretty sheltered and stories like this were shocking to say the least. But unfortunately, they are reality as well, so I think we need to talk about them to see what takeaways we can glean from them to help ourselves and our communities be safer. Let's take a look at a great verse for anyone who thinks the Bible is super hard to understand. Some parts are more difficult than others and require more study to put them in the proper context, but this one is very straight forward. Let's read it: “Don't let anyone fool you. ‘Bad companions make a good person bad.'” 1 Corinthians 15:33 I chose the NIrV translation because it's made to be easy to read, and easy to understand. And context helps us as well. Paul is writing to the church at Corinth to warn them against false teaching. He knows how easily influenced we can be. In this week's case, Mike Mansfield went along with someone he thought was his friend and he ended up paying for his misplaced trust with his life. We've all been burned by someone we thought was our friend. We've watched it happen to our children too, haven't we? I'm so grateful that it never went this far for me, and I want to help you keep it from ever going this far in your life or the life of a loved one. To me, one of the biggest steps to accomplish that is a little self-awareness. In western Christianity, we love to talk about love, and grace, and forgiveness, and happy things like that. Great stuff, of course, but the Bible has a lot to say about evil too. We need to know what God says evil looks and acts like so we can recognize it, in others - and in ourselves. That's right. We don't like to think about that, but we all have the capacity for evil thoughts and deeds. Outside of Scripture, I think the late Russian author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn said it best. Yes, I love all kinds of stories, even those from Russian dissidents. But listen to what he has to say about how understanding evil really means understanding human nature. “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” Let's all find someone this week that we can have a conversation with about this. The first step toward being safer is being aware of what we have to keep ourselves safe from. And sometimes, that doesn't look like what we might think it should.
