This episode originally aired on Sept. 12, 2023. Novelist, screenwriter, producer and publisher Lee Goldberg knows what it is to work in collaboration. He has helped to write and produce a number of television shows, including "seaQuest" and "Monk," and he also served as a supervising producer and executive producer of the long-running series "Diagnosis Murder," starring Dick Van Dyke. While working on "Monk" and "Diagnosis Murder," he wrote several original tie-in novels based on those series. Lee is also an accomplished storyteller in his own right—the author of nearly 40 novels, including Lost Hills, True Fiction, and the first five books in the Fox & O'Hare series, written with best-selling mystery novelist Janet Evanovich. His book Malibu Burning, tells the story of an elaborate heist staged in the middle of a raging California wildfire, including two additional books, Calico and Dream Town. Since this interview kicked off our third season, Lee has released a number of books, including Fallen Star and the just-published thriller Murder by Design. His forthcoming novel Split Screen, the seventh novel in his popular Eve Ronin series, is now available for preorder. Note: during our conversation, talked turned to one of Daniel Paisner's long ago book projects, in which our As Told To host chronicled the making (and unmaking) of a CBS sitcom pilot. Lee, a student of all things television who just happened to have his own publishing imprint, was intrigued, and subsequently rescued the book, originally entitled Horizontal Hold, from the scrap-heap of out-of-print books. Under his Cutting Edge Books imprint, he reissued the book with a new title—Show—and a new introduction, and we humbly suggest you check it out. Join us for a fun and informative conversation on what it means to work in and around television, and how it is that one writer has been able to capture the imagination of audiences in a variety of mediums. Vor zwei Wochen ist der zweite fünfstündige Teil erschienen: "Castration Movie Anthology II: The Best of Both Worlds".
Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military correspondent Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. All 20 living hostages were released in two stages this morning. Fabian speaks about their releases and their status. We hear about some of the more well-known faces among them and how they are faring today. Shortly before releasing them, the Hamas terror group on Monday morning orchestrated video calls between some of the living hostages and their families, who were anxiously awaiting their return. As we recorded just ahead of the Simhat Torah holiday in Israel, US President Donald Trump had just finished a long and colorful speech to the Knesset, in which, among other statements, he firmly announced the end of the Gaza War. Fabian summarizes Israel's losses and wounded in the war. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates.
Ever feel like your workweeks slide into chaos, no matter how many productivity hacks you try? If you have ADHD—or just a brain that refuses to follow “traditional” time management—you're not alone. This week on ADHD-ish, Diann Wingert breaks down the problem of context switching for ADHD entrepreneurs and introduces the concept of “focus days” with three different models to choose from. Get ready to discover practical, customizable models to help you protect your time, boost your productivity, and work with your brain, lifestyle, and stage of business. About the HostDiann Wingert is a former psychotherapist and serial entrepreneur turned business coach, specializing in helping entrepreneurs with ADHD and other “not-so-neurotypical” brains thrive. Drawing from both her clinical expertise and personal experience, Diann delivers actionable advice, real-world strategies, and a refreshingly honest perspective on building a business, balancing priorities, and protecting your most precious resources: your time and your creative energy. Here's your quick guide to Focus Days, ADHD-style:The Single Focus Scheduling MethodThink of this as giving every day its own “job”—Mondays are CEO days (big picture, strategy only!), Tuesdays and Thursdays are for clients, Wednesdays for content creation, and Fridays for building connections. The magic? You get to deeply immerse in one type of work at a time—no more multitasking burnout. The Essential Three Model: Create, Connect, ConsumePerfect if you don't want to lock yourself into a five-day structure. Allocate days based on energy: Create (any kind of output work), Connect (people-focused work like client calls), and Consume (input tasks like learning or admin). You can spread these across your week however you like—and it totally honors both structure and spontaneity. The Split-Screen ApproachNot all of us can devote a full day to a single focus. With the Split Screen model, you match tasks with your daily energy: deep work when your brain's sharpest, creative or relational work when it feels right, and breaks when you need them. It's about flowing with your energy patterns, not fighting them.Which one to try?Are your days packed with interruptions? Go for the Essential Three.Thrive with structure? Try Single Focus Scheduling.Need max flexibility or have health/family stuff? Split Screen's your friend.Protect your boundaries (and sanity):Most “emergencies” can actually wait. Create clear expectations and communicate your availability so you're not always on call—this protects your energy, time, and creative spark.Embrace experimentation over perfection:Whether you need more structure or more flexibility, give yourself permission to tweak any system. Growth comes from iteration, not rigid adherence. Try one approach for a few weeks, then adjust as needed.Not-so-fun fact:Research shows it can take UP TO 25 MINUTES to fully recover your focus after switching tasks. And with ADHD? Yep, it can take even longer. It's like trying to cook five different cuisines at once—the results are always a little…messy. As climate action shifts east and south, some would-be Climate Week attendees are staying away due to visa hassles, fears of invasive immigration procedures and risk of detention. The rollback of US climate policy likewise has global effects as the Trump administration strongarms nations into buying US gas and weakening climate policies and upends global trade with mercurial tariffs. “The Europeans are not buying it,” Carbon Tracker's Mark Campanale told Amy Cortese on the latest Agents of Impact podcast.

Millions of Americans across the country gathered over the weekend in support of “No Kings Day”, a nationwide protest against the Trump Administration. Marches were planned to contrast with a military parade at the nation’s capital, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Army. The events also coincided with President Trump’s birthday. And it all came after a week of escalating tensions between the federal government and California officials, where immigration raids had prompted clashes between protestors and police… and Trump had called in the military against the wishes of the state’s governor. Across Washington on Saturday, cities from Olympia, to Wenatchee, even passengers on a ferry from Bainbridge island - had “No Kings” protests. We wanted to get a sense of what the protests felt like across the state - and how the momentum of crowd participation could spark further action. On Saturday, Trump would like nothing more than images from Los Angeles of tear gas and balaclava-clad anarchists throwing bottles at Marines to complement video of himself in the stands at his military parade, saluting the troops amid a field of flags. That's part of the reason why he chose LA to federalize the Guard—home to numerous adversaries who willingly take his bait. And while tanks are going to roll through DC, wrecking its streets for the big birthday boy, Israel is going after Iran like it went after Hezbollah. Meanwhile, Kristi Noem handled the Padilla incident like a little fascist, and it only just occurred to Trump how the deportations will affect farms and hotels. Plus, a "Les Miz" correction, a 'Godfather' goof, and fighting words over The Beach Boys v. Lou Reed. Tom Nichols joins Tim Miller for the weekend pod. show notes Why Trump deployed troops to LA Tom's late night piece on Israel's attack on Iran Tom's "Silence of the Generals" piece The baptism scene in The Godfather Tim's playlist

After Tuesday's Vice-presidential debate, viewers were left feeling some nostalgia from debates past: heavy on policy, politeness, and comity. This week, Claire McCaskill is joined once again by her friend and former Senate colleague Heidi Heitkamp. They tick through the particulars from a relatively genial debate, and while it won't likely move the needle much, it exposed the two distinct faces of JD Vance. Then, former Obama chief strategist David Axelrod stops in to shed some light on what the Harris-Walz team should be laser-focused on in the final month of the campaign. And lastly, Heidi and Claire sift through three important stories emerging that could influence November, and how to navigate the impact of the stuff you can't control in any campaign.Want to listen to this show without ads? Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian, US bureau chief Jacob Magid and Olympics correspondent Amy Spiro join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Fabian updates us on what he knows about the IDF's preparations for a multitude of scenarios for a retaliatory strike from Iran and its proxies over the assassinations of Hamas head Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah chief of staff Fuad Shukr last week. He speaks about the Homefront Command's new system to send location-based public warning messages, following successful trials. Seven reservists were wounded, including four seriously, during fighting in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday morning. Also yesterday, an Israeli truck driver was lightly injured by a rocket impact near Kibbutz Re'ím, as terrorists in the Gaza Strip launched a barrage at southern Israel. Fabian debriefs on the current fighting in Gaza. Early this morning, an anti-tank missile hit the backyard of a home in the evacuated northern community of Avivim, without causing casualties. But, as Fabian describes, just yesterday there were attacks that left IDF soldiers wounded. We hear how the IDF retaliated.
