In 2000, Lara Merriken was 32, recently divorced, and without a job when she decided to make energy bars by mixing cherries, dates, and almonds in her Cuisinart. Eventually, she perfected the recipe and launched her company: LÄRABAR. After just two years, the company was bringing in millions in revenue. In 2008, she sold to General Mills, but stayed on to help grow LÄRABAR into one of the biggest energy bar brands in the U.S. PLUS in our post-script "How You Built That," we check back with Gerry Stellenberg who combined his knack for technology with his love of pinball to create a company for modern pinball enthusiasts called Multimorphic.

Gerry Stellenberg of Multimorphic () joins me to discuss his history with control systems, development of the revolutionary products the P-ROC, P3-ROC, and the P3, and custom pinball development on the P3. I use and enjoy many of the products produced by his company, and his boardset allowed me to complete the Multi-Bingo in a very short amount of time. I have used his boards in every project since and never hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a control system. The P3 is a modular pinball machine which allows for custom development. It has many unique features, from the wall and scoop assembly that can change the geometry of any game on the platform instantly, to an LCD screen that can serve as score display and collection of virtual targets - the ball can roll over items on the screen and interact - it's truly amazing. The 2010 Expo seminar that Gerry references - and Pinball News has a writeup here: A (very) early video of the ball tracking used on the P3: We even sneak in some bingo talk at the end! Join us in the pindev slack channel to discuss homebrew or custom development. When Jon Stein realized he couldn't stand the sight of blood, he gave up the idea of becoming a doctor. Instead, he went into finance, but soon grew restless with "helping banks make more money." So he decided to build a business where he could help everyday investors make more money: an online service that would use a combination of algorithms and human advisers. Jon launched Betterment at a precarious time — shortly after the financial crash of 2008. But today, the company has roughly 13 billion dollars under management. PLUS in our postscript "How You Built That," how Gerry Stellenberg combined his knack for technology and his love for pinball to create the P3: a pinball machine that allows a real-life ball to interact with virtual objects.

We’re back in the studio to recap all things related to Pinball Expo 2014 where we run through all the announcements, give our thoughts on everything we saw and discuss the most notable parts of the show. We then discuss what we’ve been working on in-between travels over the past month and Brent recaps his progress on the Burgertime Project (the winner in the “Put Brent to work” poll) while Whitney finally (*finally*) gets one of the games he’s been after for years (a grail?!?!?) – Zoo Keeper! We are fortunate this month, as we have two interviews – our first guest is Andrew Heighway of Heighway Pinball and we talk about all things related to Full Throttle and get some info on the upcoming Alien Pinball. Gerry Stellenberg of Multimorphic Pinball sits down with Brent for our second interview and discusses the P3 pinball platform while we get some scoop on Lexi Lightspeed and Cosmic Cart Racing! We announce the winner of our first listener contest, play some voicemail, respond to some feedback and talk a bit about another upcoming Chicago trip where we go back to Stern for a factory tour! All this and more and Brent finally gives us the answer to the question we never asked – purple. My answer was 42, so we had to come up with a compromise. ;) I don’t think Brent ever found his dancing shoes… The post Episode 19 – The Village and the Idiot first appeared on Brokentoken.com.
