Hang onto your slipcases, because Blake Howard and the legendary @RufusTSuperfly aka Tom Reagan's Hat discuss the swashbuckling delights in the choreography and sound design of Criterion's new release, The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers: Two Films by Richard Lester. The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers: Two Films by Richard LesterAlexandre Dumas's immortal tale of adventure and camaraderie received perhaps the finest of its numerous screen adaptations with this two-part swashbuckling spectacular from A Hard Day's Night director Richard Lester. Featuring Michael York, Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay, and Richard Chamberlain as the swaggering swordsmen, who thrust and parry their way through courtly intrigue in seventeenth-century France, The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers are also graced with an all-star supporting cast that includes Raquel Welch, Faye Dunaway, Geraldine Chaplin, and Charlton Heston. Lester's exuberant epic breathes new life into an oft-told classic through its boisterous slapstick invention, its meticulous attention to period detail, and a sense of pure, unbridled bravado that is thrilling to behold.Richard Lester's spirited adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's timeless novel immediately distinguished itself from previous film versions with its irresistible lightheartedness. It follows the brash, young wannabe musketeer d'Artagnan (Michael York) as he travels from the French countryside to Paris and befriends Athos (Oliver Reed), Porthos (Frank Finlay), and Aramis (Richard Chamberlain), famed swordsmen whom he must help to stop the conniving Cardinal Richelieu (Charlton Heston) and his plot to undermine the king. The Three Musketeers sweeps viewers away with its exquisite sets and costumes, chivalric romance, and breathless duels punctuated by the ingenious physical comedy that was Lester's trademark. It may be “all for one and one for all,” but it took director Richard Lester two films to contain the sweeping spectacle of Alexandre Dumas's swashbuckling adventure. This sequel—shot simultaneously with The Three Musketeers, since they were originally conceived as a single film—dials down the comic high jinks that distinguished the first installment in favor of a more somber tone, as our heroes are drawn into a deadly revenge plot orchestrated by the seductive Milady de Winter (a deliciously wicked Faye Dunaway). Upping the psychological stakes and deepening our sense of the characters, The Four Musketeers brings this beloved tale of honor and friendship to a close with a rousing emotional flourish.SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restorations, with uncompressed monaural soundtracksIn the 4K UHD edition: Two 4K UHD discs of the films presented in Dolby Vision HDR and two Blu-rays with the films and special featuresTwo for One, a new documentary by critic David CairnsThe Saga of the Musketeers (2002), a two-part documentary featuring interviews with cast and crew membersThe Making of “The Three Musketeers,” a 1973 featurette with behind-the-scenes footage of director Richard LesterTrailersEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingPLUS: An essay by film critic Stephanie ZacharekNew illustration by Mattias AdolfssonThe legendary @RufusTSuperfly aka Tom Reagan's Hat can be found here.Support: JOIN THE ONE HEAT MINUTE PATREON FOR AS LITTLE AS $1 A MONTHFollow the hosts:Blake Howard - Twitter & One Heat Minute Website Alexei Toliopoulos - Twitter & The Last Video StoreSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It's a funny week for physical media. In that there are some tremendously funny movies in the mix but also some landmarks to put in your library. Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski guide you through the work of Charles Burnett and the singular film by Kerry Conran. They take you through the multiple versions of a Ridley Scott epic, perhaps the best of the Musketeers films and the weird backstory of an SNL sequel. Warner Archive has a couple of biopics named after songs as well as Al Pacino's Oscar-winning role. A collection of Audie Murphy titles are followed up with a conversation of one of the 1980s' cable staples re-written by John Hughes. Finally, two of the best comedies of the past 30 years should be a double feature that everyone listening should want to make an evening out of.1:35 - Criterion (Killer of Sheep 4K, The Three Musketeers & The Four Musketeers 4K)18:16 - Disney (Kingdom of Heaven 4K)28:06 - Warner Archive (Lean on Me, La Vie en Rose)40:39 - IFC (Love Crime)44:22 - Shout (Scent of a Woman 4K, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow 4K)1:02:22 - Kino (Audie Murphy Collection IV, Nate & Hayes, Wayne's World 2 4K, Kingpin 4K, Bottoms)1:58:29 - New TV on Blu-ray (Outlander Season 7, Yellowstone Season 5)1:59:56 - New Blu-ray AnnouncementsCLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCAST This is a public episode. Retired attorney, former President of the Lafayette chapter of the Sons of the Revolution, and all around General Lafayette expert Dale Henley sits down with David to talk about the Marquis de Lafayette and his visit to Lexington in 1825. They talk about Lafayette's background, from joining the Musketeers at the age of thirteen to defying the French King and sailing to the American colonies to advance the cause of liberty at just nineteen years old. Dale shares book recommendations for learning more about Lafayette's role in the Revolutionary War, his abolitionist views, and his 1825 visit on the invitation of President Monroe. He also tells us about the events in Lexington in May 2025 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Lafayette's visit. The opening music for this episode is the “Brandywine Quickstep” named for Brandywine, Pennsylvania where Lafayette took part in his first battle of the revolution and was subsequently wounded. The recording is by the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and is in the public domain.

Phew!
What if Trump Discovers that Unpaid UK (and French) Debt From WWI? The current administration has tossed concepts such as “special relationships” with allies out the window. The administration seems willing to apply just about any leverage it has to obtain concessions from allies, including concessions that might reduce the US debt. Seen in that light, what will happen when Trump and the Musketeers discover that the UK and France have hundred-year old unpaid debts? With interest, that unpaid debt would now amount to a few trillion dollars. Enforcing these debts would be near impossible, except that the UK and France own a whole bunch of US Treasuries. Could the administration try to force a swap of those Treasuries into longer term obligations? Or try to use the US government's claims against the UK and France as a setoff, reducing payments on US debt held by those governments? Seems loony. But loony is normal these days. Watch Off the Bench Presented by UDF with Chatterbox Sports Monday-Friday 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. LIVE on the Chatterbox Sports YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE to the channel to ensure you never miss a thing. The 2025 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, launching on March 18, promises another thrilling March Madness with its blend of powerhouse programs, emerging mid-majors, and inevitable surprises. The 68-team field, finalized on Selection Sunday, March 16, features 31 automatic qualifiers from conference tournaments and 37 at-large bids selected by the NCAA committee. With Selection Sunday now behind us, the bracket is set, and the First Four kicks off the action in Dayton, Ohio, on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 18-19, narrowing the field to 64. The tournament culminates at the Alamodome in San Antonio on April 7, but the opening days will shape the narrative. In the 2025 NCAA First Four, Xavier faced Texas on Wednesday, March 19, in a thrilling matchup. Xavier trailed by as much as 13 points but mounted a furious second-half comeback, fueled by hot shooting and a supportive Dayton crowd. The Musketeers erased the deficit, tying the game at 65 with eight minutes left, and finished with an 86-80 victory, led by Zach Freemantle's clutch scoring (15 points, including six in the final two minutes). Texas' Tre Johnson (18 points) couldn't stop the collapse, and Xavier advanced to face Illinois. On Tuesday, March 18, North Carolina dominated San Diego State in a lopsided 95-68 blowout. The Tar Heels, a controversial at-large pick, silenced doubters early, building a 24-point halftime lead. RJ Davis was unstoppable, going 6-for-6 from three-point range, while San Diego State never found its rhythm, trailing by as much as 33 in the second half. North Carolina moved on to play Ole Miss, proving they belonged in the field of 64. Thursday, March 20, 2025, marks the start of the NCAA Tournament's First Round, a 16-game marathon that ignites March Madness with wall-to-wall action. Across eight host cities—Lexington, Providence, Wichita, Denver, and more—top seeds like Duke and Florida take on No. 16 underdogs, while volatile 8-9 and 7-10 matchups promise drama. Fresh off Tuesday's First Four upset, where Alabama State stunned Saint Francis (PA) with an 85-foot pass and a game-winning layup, the day carries upset potential—watch for a 12-seed like McNeese State to challenge a 5-seed like Clemson. Games tip off around noon EDT and run late, broadcast across CBS, TBS, TNT, and truTV, with fans glued to screens for buzzer-beaters and bracket chaos.

March is a big month on the American Jesuit calendar because it's the biggest month for men's and women's college basketball. The March Madness tournaments are the most purely fun and chaotic sporting events on the planet. Nothing beats massive single elimination tournaments if you're looking for surprises and drama. And these tournaments are often big showcases for our Jesuit colleges and universities, many of which have rich basketball histories. In recent decades, no Jesuit program has been more successful than the Gonzaga University Bulldogs men's team, led since 1999 by head coach Mark Few. And one person you might notice on the end of the bench if you watch a Gonzaga men's or women's game this March is a rather short guy wearing a red Gonzaga sweater over black clerical attire. This is Father Bryan Pham, SJ, a Jesuit priest and the chaplain for both Bulldog hoops teams. You might think someone with this job would be a huge basketball fan. Not so in Fr. Bryan's case, who was quick to tell host Mike Jordan Laskey that he rarely understands what he's watching on the court. Fr. Bryan is a huge fan of the athletes themselves, though, and he sees his role as one of availability and spiritual support. We wanted to find out what the work of a Jesuit basketball chaplain entails and what March Madness looks like through his eyes. Fr. Bryan also shared reflections about his many other roles at the university.
