As a show of mostly Xavier guys, it's hard not to celebrate the death of Bob Huggins' career after he used a homophobic slur on a Cincinnati radio station trying to make fun of Xavier. The fellas spend a good chunk of time laughing at Xavier taking down Huggins without having to do anything and ponder why Huggy Bear has such a grudge against Xavier (spoiler alert, it's because he's 8-10 against the Musketeers). The fellas shift gears to talk about the NBA Playoffs, and Cesar feels like his Celtics should be much further ahead in their series against the 76ers. Plus, the guys decide if they should tail or fade the corgi who has accurately picked the first 4 games of the Lakers/Warriors series. The conversation moves to baseball, where the fellas wonder if Mookie is coaching Alabama after the Bama coach was fired for using a proxy to place bets for him against his own team. Scott thinks it's hilarious that baseball and legal sports gambling are contributing to the downfall of college athletics. The guys dig into Dallas Braden's statement after Glen Kuiper torpedoed his own career dropping a slur during an Oakland A's pre-game broadcast. The show wraps with the fellas doing that hockey, and discussing whether or not the NHL Draft Lottery was rigged for Chicago. #Sponsored by Caldera + Lab. This week we take a look at the second most expensive TV show of all time, the flashy waste of money that is Amazon's Citadel, from the Russo Bros., one of the most expensive French films of all time, Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan, a great Evil Dead sequel in Rise, the Superman 4K collection, Kieslowski's Three Colours Trilogy in 4K, and a bunch of good TV like Florida Man, The Diplomat, Yellowjackets Season 2, Dead Ringers, and Sweet Tooth Season 2.
A private college that grows heart and mind. I am a product of a large university. I am proud of my USC experience, but honestly, there is nothing quite as comforting as a small school. You feel the difference almost immediately. Upon my arrival in the Admission office – I was greeted, given a packet and invited to refreshments in a cozy waiting room. I drank my water on the blue couch in front of a fireplace and waited to be escorted down the hallway to a room that was once the inside of a chapel with stone colored brick and vibrant stained-glass windows. Founded in 1861, Xavier is the 6th oldest Catholic college in the US and located in Cincinnati, OH. It is home to just over 4000 Musketeers What does it mean to be a Jesuit Institution? It means they are committed to a well rounded to liberal arts education and social justice. Here are three things to note about Xavier University: First: Sticking with the warm, welcoming, comfortable feel of a small school – the Xavier community can be best summed up by describing Freshman Orientation – known to Musketeers as “MAN-REE-SA” Imagine your first day of college – you drive up with your parents with a car full of boxes and you are scared to death and your parents are trying to hold it together. When all of a sudden – neon t-shirts descend onto your car as you pull up – and a small village of upperclassmen unload your boxes and personally deliver them to your room!! Shortly thereafter – you say good-bye to that empty car load now only filled with love - and YOU spend the next 72 hours enmeshed with your MAN – REE- SA group – and begin discovering new friends that just might be your friends for life. I cannot imagine a better way to be greeted on the first day of college. Second: there are a few programs that will require an additional application and/or process for admission. I want to point out two: Radiologic Technology – 2 year and 4 year program This requires and meeting with head of the program - Donna Endicott They have rolling admissions – so the sooner the better Please write down – this program has a 100% job placement rate within 6 months of graduation. Nursing – There is room for about 130 nurses each year -- deadline to apply January 15 Minimum 3.0 GPA AND 24 ACT with 21 in Math Please note here – the admission process begins after January 15 and ALL applicants are notified 4-6 weeks later. Finally: Xavier basketball: This is big time DI basketball. The “cross town shootout” is an annual big game against out of conference rival, University of Cincinnati. Students camp out – outside of the Cintas Center waiting to be let in. The Head Coach has been known to come bearing gifts of pizza and the like. Don't overlook what you might call “small schools” – a college that can grow your heart and your mind – is worth investigating! The Texas Longhorns have the opportunity to do what just five teams before them have been able to do, reach the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament. Standing in their way, are the Xavier Musketeers, who bring one of the more effective offenses left in the tournament. Xavier and head coach Sean Miller are coming off a close win in the opening round over Kennesaw State and a runaway victory over Pittsburgh, and are hoping to improve on the last year of Miller's last stint in Cincinnati with a trip to the Elite Eight. Miller leans heavily on a seven-man rotation weighted heavily toward the starters, with just five players boasting a double-digit scoring average for the year. Guard Souley Boum and forward Zach Freemantle lead the way for the Musketeers, averaging 16.5 and 15.2 points per game respectively, while Freemantle chips in 8.1 rebounds per game. How do the Longhorns stack up against the Musketeers and what will it take for Texas to come away with a win? Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook. (00:00 - 27:21) - The Fan MidDay Show is LIVE in the Bottleworks District today. Inside the Garage Food Hall the show opens up with Jimmy Cook and Brian Noe discussing the Indianapolis Colts signing of quarterback Gardner Minshew. He comes to Indy from the Philadelphia Eagles after spending two seasons as their backup. Noe believes that Minshew is a decent signing for the Colts as he is a decent talent and saves the team some valuable cap space. Is there a massive gap in talent between the top four quarterback names being thrown around in the 2023 NFL draft? Would signing a new quarterback make the fan base impatient if the team draftet a quarterback as well? Princeton's miraculous upset over Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last night. (27:22 - 40:33) - Cook and Noe dig into the Purdue and Fairleigh Dickinson matchup happening later today. Dickinson's head coach talked a big game saying they think beating Purdue is a strong possibility. Why did Brandon Miller play in the first round if he is nursing a groin injury? As a 1 seed team Alabama could have afforded to sit a star player for their first game. The colors of the courts in this tournament seem to be a bit off. (40:34 - 49:48) - Noe thinks that both IU and Purdue will be defined by their consistency in this NCAA Tournament. Kent State is seen as a rough matchup for IU, Cook wants to see the Hoosiers attack early and often to set Kent State on their heels early. While Purdue has a substantially easier matchup, they have to leave their frustrations over foul calls at the door this game and just go out and play strong basketball. (49:49 - 1:20:00) - Kevin Bowen of The Fan morning show Kevin & Query joins the program at the start of the second hour, the three hosts all comment on the variety of activites you can engage in at The Garage in the Bottleworks district. Then Bowman discusses how he feels about IU's chances tonight. He believes that a couple of players will have to get going in order for others to follow suit. If Trace Jackson-Davis or Miller Kopp can start hot then the rest of the team should be able to match that energy. Kent State will not be timid against IU tonight, as they have played very well against high ranked opponents and are riding high off their MAC Tournament win. Pivotting to football Bowman thinks that Minshew joining the Colts is going to be a solid addition to the team right now. Minshew played under the Colts new headcoach Shane Steichen in Philadelphia. Despite the addition the conversation of how is Indianapolis going to protect its quarterback is still up in the air. (1:20:01 - 1:34:35) - Recapping some of the fun basketball stories that have come from this NCAA Tournament. 14th ranked Kennesaw State, who at the time of recording was up over the 3rd ranked Xavier had their first nationally televised home basketball game this season. Keyontae Johnson who collapsed during a game with a large heart in 2020 is passing on a 5 million dollar insurance payment in order to pursue an NBA career. Noe and Cook go over the current tournament games being played, and if there are any appealing bets to be placed. (1:34:36 - 1:38:41) - A fan gifted the guys a drink on this St. Patrick's Day episode of the MidDay Show. The guys close out the hour with more conversation over Colts latest signee Gardner Minshew and comparisons to who else they could have signed. (1:38:42 - 2:05:02) Coach Seth Greenberg is on the show to talk about the NCAA Tournament and immediately addresses the Kennesaw State vs. Xavier situation saying that the Musketeers are just getting "out toughed" by the Owls. Greenberg is confident that IU will win their contest tonight against Kent State. The Hoosier's strong guard game is a noticeable advantage to him. He is similarly hopeful for Purdue, but notes that their schedule gets difficult quickly as a win tonight immediately puts them against either Memphis or Florida Atlantic, then Duke or Tennessee will be after that. After the interview there is more deconstruction of IU and Purdue's matchups. Cook references a relevant statistic pertaining to NCAA Champions regular season 3 point percentage. IU's three point percentage is within the range of those National Champion teams, while Purdue has not. Purdue shoots plenty of threes. but they are not hitting nearly as many. Noe received a "career ending" handshake yesterday during JMv's show. (2:05:03 - 2:19:20) - Xavier managed to comeback and tie the game up, live updates on the program. Noe admits to Kyle, the Bottleworks Manager, that his handshake caused an injury yesterday. Noe and Cook take the time to interview Kyle about the development of The Garage Food Hall and how they managed to build up a fantastic eatery in the downtown area. The three men then sort of run down the bracket and see who has been making the right picks so far this tournament. (2:19:21 - 2:22:42) - J Cook's Plays of the Day and closing conversation. It's March! This episode we focus on Xavier and the Big East tournament. The Musketeers haven't won a game here since 2019, but are poised to do so this season. We break down the loss of Zach Freemantle, the emergence of Cesare Edwards, and what impact that has on Xavier's chances of a deep run. We'll give our predictions for the tournament, the awards, and a piping hot take about Providence on this episode of Banter.
The Musketeers capped off the month that has tripped them up recently by hammering Seton Hall on the road. That leaves X in a great position entering March and gives us a chance to peak ahead to the conference tournaments. There are big comebacks to discuss, Nate Oats being a coward, Fran McCaffery doing God knows what, and your questions on this episode of Banter.
Season 5 of The Object begins Monday, March 6! Until then, enjoy this encore presentation of "The Black Musketeer," first broadcast in May 2022. The man behind "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo" was one of the richest, most popular authors in the world—an adventurous celebrity who could fight as well as write. Here it is. Our massive exploration of one of the most disreputable genres imaginable: The Swishbuckler. A loose collection of movies created in the mid-70s through the mid-80s parodying the classic swashbucklers of yore, swishbuckler films like Zorro The Gay Blade, Pirates, Yellowbeard and Cheech & Chong's The Corsican Brothers are marked by their terrible comedy, penchant for grotesquerie, extreme campiness and even more extreme poor taste. This might be The Pink Smoke's most massive podcast undertaking yet: from the genre's roots in Richard Lester's Musketeers films to a send-off into the swashbuckler revival of the 90s ignited by Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, it's an improbably in-depth look at an utterly ridiculous genre for which hosts Christopher Funderburg and John Cribbs have an almost inconceivable enthusiasm. Support our Patreon: www.patreon.com/thepinksmoke (Still need an explanation of what the hell is going on here? Here ya go: At the dawn of cinema, there was The Swashbuckler: intrigue, romance and derring-do that swept audiences into the colorful royal courts and handsome pirate ships from the pages of Dumas and Sabatini. Even after its post-war peak, the Swashbuckler remained the most popular of Hollywood entertainment, having made international stars of Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn and modern legends of mythical heroes like Zorro, Robin Hood, the Three Musketeers and Captain Peter Blood. By the 1970's, the legacy of Fairbanks and Flynn had devolved into what we loving term the Swishbuckler: a subgenre of comedy that borrowed the same tales of adventure and romance mixed with a healthy dose of modern irreverence. For a solid decade, raunchy satires placed in historical settings marked a trail of flatulence and queasy sexual politics across American screens to an overwhelmingly hostile critical and poor commercial response. We at the Pink Smoke are so fascinated by this odd epoch of cinema that we recorded a nearly five-hour episode in which we chronicle 14 Swishbuckler "classics," trying to understand how this wave of mediocrity managed to stay afloat for 10 years in spite of marked indifference to outright derision from critics and consistently sinking box office returns. How did these always weird, sometimes nasty exercises in Golden Era grave robbing reflect the styles and attitudes of comedy of the time? How did they deal with huge movements like women's liberation? Was the heritage of the Swashbuckler respected, even while the outmoded ideals of gallantry and romance were being purposefully disrespected? If you ever asked for an in-depth analysis of this bizarre trend of parodying a bygone era of film, you've come to the right place!) This Week in the Big East - Weekly Overview of NCAA College Basketball's Top Conference
This Week In The BIG EAST Radio Show, distributed by Westwood One, continues its ninth season with guests Xavier graduate guard Souley Boum, St. John's head coach Mike Anderson and FOX Sports Analyst Andy Katz. The sixth episode of TWITBE reviews the past week of BIG EAST basketball, taking a deep dive into the league's top contenders for the regular season title. As the home teams continue to dominate, the top four teams in the standings–Marquette, Xavier, Providence and Creighton–are currently 8-0 against each other on their home floors, in addition to being a perfect 27-0 combined at home in overall conference action. The BIG EAST Spotlight is on Xavier guard Souley Boum, who runs the point for the BIG EAST leading Musketeers. Ranking at the top of the BIG EAST with a 4.6 assist-turnover ratio in league play, tied-for-second at 5.7 assists per game and seventh with 15.7 points per game, Boum discusses his growth from starting his career at San Francisco, competing at UTEP and now leading the charge at Xavier. With the ability to defend, dish, drive, and shoot, Boum is drawing well deserved national notoriety. The BIG EAST Focus shines on St. John's head coach Mike Anderson, ahead of the Red Storm's showdown with No. 20 Providence at Madison Square Garden Saturday at Noon ET on FOX. Outside the everyday tasks of teaching and coaching, there are many outside factors affecting coaches these days. Recruiting, the transfer portal and NIL are making the profession more challenging by the day. Anderson provides his take on his team and the day-to-day life of being a BIG EAST head coach.FOX Analyst Andy Katz gives a view on the national perspective. March Madness is officially just around the corner, but there is still much to decide in terms of regular season and conference tournament champions. In addition, the process of seeding the NCAA Tournament field will be particularly difficult this season with the strengths of conferences such as the BIG EAST, Big 12 and Big 10. Katz takes the time to break down the top conferences and teams with an eye toward the Big Dance. The episode's “Who's Hot” segment features the return of “Blast from the Past”, rewinding the tape to just a season ago, February 15th, 2022. Villanova's do-everything guard Collin Gillespie went off for a career best 33 points in an 89-84 win at Providence. The win paved the way to a strong end of the year finish for the Wildcats and Gillespie, with the latter earning BIG EAST Player of the Year, the Dave Gavitt Trophy winner as Most Outstanding Player in the BIG EAST Tournament, as well as a Final Four appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The returning hosts for This Week In The BIG EAST (#TWITBE) are John Rooke, a longtime BIG EAST play-by-play voice, and Kevin McNamara, BIG EAST radio host, columnist and author. Rooke and McNamara give a comprehensive look at the teams, coaches, players and storied tradition of the top basketball conference in America in each episode. To join the conversation and send questions to Rooke (@JRbroadcaster) and McNamara (@KevinMcNamara33), use #TWITBE on Twitter. Fans may submit questions to be featured on the show. Please subscribe, rate and review to keep #TWITBE top of the podcast charts. This will air Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. ET on Sirius 138 XM 201 Online 964 leading into the St. John's broadcast of Providence @ St. John's.
