Pack the car! Route 66 turns 100 this year, and the Mother Road is still one weird and wild ride. We're hitting the highway from the California border to the New Mexico high desert, where we'll encounter the feral donkeys who rule the streets of a gold rush boomtown, visit an abandoned zoo with a body count, and climb a 2,000-year-old pueblo with a hidden staircase that outsmarted the Spanish conquistadors. Along the way, journalist and adventurer Will Grant introduces us to the people who populate this legendary road: a Hualapai elder who remembers the highway's golden age, the determined shopkeeper who fought to preserve her town's iconic neon glow, and a young Diné man who grew up at his family's trading post. Together, they share what the centenarian route means to the communities that depend on it—and tap into the powerful hold it still has on the nation's imagination. Whether you long for an epic Western roadtrip or you're just here for the vintage kitsch, this episode will have you reaching for the keys. Where Route 66 takes us: Oatman, Arizona: Stop to cuddle the adorable baby burrows in this old mining town. Kingman, Arizona: Home to the Arizona Route 66 Museum, where Model T's roll in from Chicago and tourists arrive from around the globe. Peach Springs, Arizona: The heart of the Hualapai Nation, where the tribal market is the unofficial town square. Williams, Arizona: Vintage neon signs dot one of the most authentic main streets on the route. Two Guns, Arizona: An abandoned zoo where the murderous owner was mauled by his own mountain lions. Winslow, Arizona: The sandstone canyon where Easy Rider and The Grapes of Wrath were filmed, plus a classic Diné trading post. Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico: Dubbed Sky City, this mesa-top village is the oldest continuously inhabited community in the U.S. Guest: Will Grant Born and raised in Colorado, Will Grant brings a cowboy-philosopher's eye to the landscapes, characters, and histories that make the West unlike anywhere else on earth. After college, he worked as a cowboy and a horse trainer in Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas, where he apprenticed under the legendary horseman Jack Brainard. In 2008, he pivoted to a career in journalism, but he continues to seek out ways to combine horses and storytelling. His 2023 book, The Last Ride of the Pony Express, recounts his 2,000-mile journey along the famed mail route with his horses Chicken Fry and Badger. Other adventures include a 600-mile horse race across Mongolia, an expedition to find gold in Arizona, and two trips to Kyrgyzstan to play kok boru, the most dangerous horseback game on the planet. For Via, Will traded his saddle for a steering wheel to investigate some of the most storied—and strangest—stretches of Route 66. His writing has also appeared in Outside magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek, the Wall Street Journal, and regional publications throughout the West. Will currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his partner, Claire Antoszewski, and two dogs, three chickens, and five horses. Via Podcast is a production of AAA Mountain West Group.

Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 80-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 41,448 on turnover of $12.8-billion N-T. The market rebouded on Thursday after losing ground for five consecutive sessions following a solid earning's report from Nvidia, which lifted investor interest in tech stocks. Taiwan targets 100,000 monthly drone output and export growth The Ministry of Economic Affairs says the island's drone industry is expected to expand significantly (顯著地) by 2030. According to the ministry's Industrial Development Administration, Taiwan's drone output value grew 2.5-fold last year to 12.9-billion N-T under a government program to develop the unmanned vehicle sector. The administration says current monthly drone production capacity is about 15,000 units, but the industry can quickly scale-up as demand increases, This means capacity is projected to exceed 100,000 units per month by 2030 and 50-per cent of that total will be exported. Exports of Taiwan-made drones currently account for just over 20-per cent. The top buyers are the Czech Republic, Poland and the United States. Elderly anteater missing from Taipei Zoo The Taipei Zoo is asking for public help in finding a lesser anteater that escaped from its enclosure (圍起來的區域) earlier in the week. According to the zoo, the anteater has not been seen since Monday and 65 staff members have been searching for the 12-year-old animal. She was last seen on surveillance cameras around 6:55PM on Monday near a visitor walkway in a bromeliad garden. Zookeepers are speculating that a banana tree inside the enclosure may have snapped under the animal's weight while she was climbing, creating a "bridge" to an adjacent artificial rock formation, allowing her to escape. The zoo says lesser anteaters are nocturnal and tend to hide in dense vegetation during the day, which makes the search efforts difficult. The searches so far have been focused on the zoo's rainforest zone, nearby trails, and hillsides around the giant panda exhibit. Israel Releases Gaza Flotilla Activists Israel says it has released and deported hundreds of activists who took part in a flotilla attempting to breach Israel's naval blockade (海上封鎖) of Gaza. About 420 activists placed on a flight to Turkey landed Thursday in Istanbul. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said all foreign activists had been deported. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the deportations after criticizing Israel's national security minister for taunting detained activists. The flotilla, with over 50 boats, left from Turkey to draw attention to Gaza's conditions. US House to vote on limiting Trump's Iran war power The US House of Representatives is expected to vote on legislation that would severely (程度很深,嚴重) limit president Donald Trump's ability to continue to wage war against Iran. A similar war powers resolution passed the Senate earlier this week. Nick Harper reports from Washington. Mexico US Homeland Security Sec Visiting Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said that she and the U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin agreed to maintain bilateral cooperation rooted in mutual respect. Mullin's two-day Mexico visit follows tensions over the deaths of two CIA agents at Mexico's northern border and U.S. indictments against 10 Mexican officials. Sheinbaum's administration has emphasized cooperation while maintaining sovereignty. Mullin, who assumed the position in March after Kristi Noem's departure (離開), is also scheduled to meet with Mexico's Security Cabinet. That was the I.C.R.T. Are your kids dragging their feet when it comes to writing? You're far from alone. This week on Homeschool Better Together, Laney Homan sits down with Joshua Davidson—children's author and co-founder of Night Zookeeper—to unpack why so many kids lose their early love for creativity, and, most importantly, how we can spark that joy (and confidence) again, even for the most reluctant writers.Joshua shares a behind-the-scenes look into how creativity and story play a critical role in confidence building—not just on paper, but in your child's sense of self. We talk about the science behind why kids start doubting their creative abilities (especially around ages 7–8), the difference between praise-based and skills-based confidence, and why stories can help even literal, “grandpa before their time” thinkers start to unlock imaginative worlds.Laney also gets honest about her goal-oriented, checklist mindset (raise your hand if you're with me) and how it can unintentionally sap the joy from our homeschool days. There are plenty of practical ideas you can try today—whether your child needs a gentle push into creative writing, a safe space for self-expression, or just permission to invent the next great “kickboxing tiger.” Yes, that's a thing! Here's a sneak peek of what you'll learn:Why writing is so dang hard for kids (it's not just them!)The age when children typically get self-conscious… and what to do about itHow creative expression anchors real confidence—not just loud “look at me” energyThe surprising link between storytelling, play, and long-lasting self-awarenessTips for helping both wildly imaginative and “black-and-white thinker” kids get unstuckNew ways to use character-building (without forcing kids to produce yet another story)How to leverage positive peer feedback—even when you're homeschooling soloThe difference between praise-based confidence (“Good job!”) and skills-based confidence (the kind that actually lasts)Resources Mentioned:Night Zookeeper programSir Ken Robinson (on creativity)Homeschool Better Together's Language Arts Together programYour Next Steps:Check out Night Zookeeper for a playful, confident approach to writingTry building writing sessions around character creation—or let kids expand on their favorite movie/book character adventuresEmbrace “imperfect” creative sessions—sometimes that wild made-up word is the best thing your family will rememberReady for more encouragement and practical tools? He explains Venice's unbundled architecture where each component—from Kafka-based pub/sub to RocksDB-powered servers—operates as an independent distributed system. Félix details their rigorous chaos engineering practices, including regular load tests that push data centers beyond normal capacity to ensure reliability. The discussion covers fundamental distributed systems concepts like the CAP theorem and the trade-offs between consistency and availability in multi-region deployments. He also explains why Venice, as a derived data system, deliberately sacrifices strong consistency for high throughput and availability, and concludes by discussing their experimental integration of DuckDB for SQL-based analytics and data exploration capabilities.RECOMMENDED BOOKSKasun Indrasiri & Danesh Kuruppu • gRPC: Up and Running • https://amzn.to/3sBGBJJTomer Shiran, Jason Hughes & Alex Merced • Apache Iceberg: The Definitive Guide • https://amzn.to/488Z30kWilliam Smith • Arrow Flight Protocols and Practices • https://amzn.to/4o2Q2fdAdi Polak • Scaling Machine Learning with Spark • https://amzn.to/3N9vx1HMark Needham, Michael Hunger & Michael Simons • DuckDB in Action • https://amzn.to/45QwSliSimon Aubury & Ned Letcher • Getting Started with DuckDB • https://amzn.to/3VPk4qBlueskyInstagramLinkedInFacebookCHANNEL MEMBERSHIP BONUSJoin this channel to get early access to videos & other perks:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs_tLP3AiwYKwdUHpltJPuA/joinLooking for a unique learning experience?Attend the next GOTO conference near you! With real tutors, smart scaffolding, and a gentle, visually stunning interface, Night Zookeeper helps reluctant writers become confident storytellers—and gives fluent writers a global community to share their work. What you'll learn How creativity fuels literacy: kids design characters, then naturally want to write, revise, and share. Built-in scaffolding: age-appropriate prompts and supports progress from picture-choice sentences to full paragraphs and essays. Immediate feedback (from a penguin!): friendly, low-friction corrections keep momentum high. Safe, moderated community: every post is reviewed by humans; parent controls let you dial features up or down. Comprehensive ELA: reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, poetry, persuasive and report writing—guided by quests or sandbox play. Tutor feedback: real people encourage, coach, and celebrate wins. Grows with your learner: ages ~5–11 with pathways for beginners and advanced storytellers. Cross-platform access: computers and tablets; iPhone available now, Android app coming. How Night Zookeeper works (quick tour) Create a character (unicorn-rainbow besties with a crisp packet named Bill? yes.). Tell the story with prompts that match skill level. Get feedback—from tutors, peers, and the professorial penguin. Build skills via gamified lessons and the new Quests mode (a structured route through the curriculum). Share & celebrate inside a fully moderated, kid-safe community. Safety & parental controls All student work is reviewed by human tutors before it's public. In this episode Andrea revisits her 2019 conversation with Dr. Daniel J. Siegel to explore Mindsight — his science-based approach to understanding the mind, integrating the brain, and cultivating empathy. Dr. Siegel explains the difference between mind and brain, the benefits of the Wheel of Awareness meditation, and how Mindsight can change brain structure and improve health. Watch full interview here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7pnea2Vbzc Practical tips include daily Mindsight practice, naming emotions to build self-awareness, and simple emotional check-ins to make learning and relationships more meaningful. This week, in our review of EP 28 with Daniel J. Siegel, MD and his book Mindsight, we learned: ✔ The Difference Between the Mind and the Brain. ✔ The Benefits of The Wheel of Awareness Meditation. ✔ How to Understand and Apply Mindsight that gives us insight into ourselves, and empathy for others. ✔ How Mindsight can change brain structure and improve health. ✔ In order to make teaching and learning more meaningful, what we are teaching must have an element of emotion. Welcome back to SEASON 14 of The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we connect the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning and emotional intelligence training for improved well-being, achievement, productivity and results—using what I saw as the missing link (since we weren't taught this when we were growing up in school), the application of practical neuroscience. I'm Andrea Samadi, and seven years ago, launched this podcast with a question I had never truly asked myself before: (and that is) If productivity and results matter to us—and they do now more than ever—how exactly are we using our brain to make them happen? Most of us were never taught how to apply neuroscience to improve productivity, results, or well-being. About a decade ago, I became fascinated by the mind-brain-results connection—and how science can be applied to our everyday lives. That's why I've made it my mission to bring you the world's top experts—so together, we can explore the intersection of science and social-emotional learning. We'll break down complex ideas and turn them into practical strategies we can use every day for predictable, science-backed results. Episode 371: For today's Episode 371, we continue our journey into the mind with the next interview review. Just a reminder-this review series began back with Episode 366[i], where in Part 3 we discovered an important lesson: if we don't like our results—or what we see on the outside—we need to shift our mindset and look within. True change always begins on the inside. EP 369[ii] we learned how to Rewire our Brain with Dr. Dawson Church and his Bliss Brain Meditations, and then last week, EP 370[iii] with John Medina's Brain Rules, we reviewed how important this understanding of neuroscience is, especially connected to education, teaching and learning. Which brings us to today's review, EP 371, where we revisit a very early episode with clinical professor of psychiatry from UCLA's School of Medicine, Dr. Daniel J Siegel. He's from EP 28[iv], that was recorded back in November of 2019. As we take this journey deeper into the mind, Dr. Dan Siegel offers the perfect place to begin, with his ability to bridge cutting-edge neuroscience and practical wisdom. Dr. Dan Siegel, is well known for his books, trainings and courses that bridge cutting edge neuroscience with mindfulness and therapy. A reminder of his background-he's a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and executive director of the Mindsight Institute[v] where you can find his courses, workshops, books and tools to help anyone understand and apply what can sometimes be complicated scientific concepts and make them easy to understand and applicable to our daily lives. At the end of the interview, I let Dr. Siegel know that I had been practicing his Wheel of Awareness Meditation, and ended up reviewing what I learned on EP 60[vi] where we explored the Science Behind a Meditation Practice. You can watch the whole interview by clicking on the link in the resource section in the show notes, and learn all about Dr. Siegel's work that encompasses schools, with resiliency, brain science and helping our next generation to understand how to apply these important strategies whether it's in our classrooms, or workplaces of the future. Today we will continue to explore within, sharpen our mindset, and learn about what Dr. Siegel calls Mindsight. VIDEO 1 Click Here to Watch In Clip 1, Dr. Siegel unpacks the concept of Mindsight and helps clarify the difference between the mind and the brain, when I asked him to explain this distinction. I knew this wasn't an easy question—as I had already listened to him answer it many times over the years, and still wasn't sure I fully grasped it. In fact, I even tried to tackle it myself back in Episode 23[vii], Understanding Your Brain and Mind for Increased Results. But revisiting this topic now, I can see this concept requires a much deeper reflection. So, I asked Dr. Siegel if we could look at his definition of the mind—one he has been studying for years and that many in his scientific and educational circles agree on. He describes the mind as “an embodied and relational process—since it's in the body and it's in our relationships with one another—that regulates the flow of energy and information.” I wanted to hear him expand on this again, especially around why relationships are so critical for our health, our well-being, and for creating what he calls an integrated brain—which he equates with a healthy brain. His answer helped me to understand the importance of implementing Mindsight into our daily life. He said: “The word mind doesn't actually have a formal definition—not in education, psychotherapy, or even in fields like psychology that study it directly. But if we look closely, the mind includes your subjective experience—that inner feeling of being alive. It also includes consciousness—the ability to know that you're having that subjective experience. And beyond that, there's information processing—which doesn't always require consciousness and is essentially what school focuses on: learning to process information. When you understand the mind as a self-organizing process—a complex system that regulates its own becoming—you begin to see the power of teaching about the mind itself. This is what we call Mindsight. And if we could bring this understanding into education, the outcomes for students would be profoundly different.” Key Tip 1 with Dr. Dan Siegel Understanding and Applying Mindsight which is “the way we focus our attention on the internal world. It's how we bring consciousness to our own thoughts and feelings, and then next, how we attune to the inner world of someone else. Mindsight gives us insight into ourselves, and empathy for others.”

You may know him best as the voice of Salem The Cat or Norbert from Sabrina The Teenage Witch and Angry Beavers but Nick Bakay is also the Writer/Producer who brought you Mom, King Of Queens, Paul Blart Mall Cop and Bookie. What does it take to sustain a multi-decade entertainment industry career? Versatility. Nick takes us deep into Sabrina lore with tales of the old-school imagineering of Salem Saberhagen, brought to us via several cats, puppeteers, animatronics, trainers and cat treats. A Buffalo, NY native, Nick's facility at performing, writing, and producing allowed him to create opportunities for himself that were both entertaining and rewarding. He's heard from a generation of young women who felt empowered by Sabrina to take on adult life, even without the benefit of witchcraft. Along with his pal Keven James, Nick went from writing on King Of Queens to creating Paul Blart: Mall Cops One and Two, and Zookeeper. And it was his writing chops that forged a connection with Chuck Lorre, providing Nick with an opportunity to write for Two And A Half Men and go on to helm nine seasons of Mom, HBO's Bookie and an upcoming Netflix sitcom, Leanne. Nick is also a household name to sports fan who see his work on ESPN. He was recently inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasting Hall Of Fame and, a Quick Buffalo Indulgence Warning: Nick and Weezy do get a little carried away waxing sentimental about their shared Buffalo roots.
