Point No Point is at the north end of Washington's Kitsap Peninsula in the small town of Hansville. Construction of a lighthouse at Point No Point began in April 1879. Point No Point is the oldest lighthouse on Puget Sound, and it consists of a square 30-foot-tall brick and stucco tower between an attached office and a fog signal building. Photo by Jeremy D'Entremont In the late 1990s, the last Coast Guard personnel left Point No Point and the property was leased to Kitsap County Parks and Recreation. The county created the 60-acre Point No Point Park. The U.S. Lighthouse Society relocated its headquarters to the keeper's house at Point No Point in 2008. One side of the duplex house is the Society's offices and the other side has overnight accommodations open to the public. The keepers' house at Point No Point. Photo by Jeremy D'Entremont. There are two interviews in this episode, and the first is with three people. Dave Anderson is the president of the Friends of Point No Point Lighthouse. Lori Raymaker is the docent coordinator for the organization, and Shelly Douglas is a past president. The second interview is with Al Bryant , an architect with special expertise in historic preservation projects. Al is on the board of directors of the Friends of Point No Point Lighthouse and he's overseeing the current plans for a restoration of the lighthouse buildings. USLHS executive director Jeff Gales takes part in both interviews along with host Jeremy D'Entremont. Sunrise on the beach at Point No Point. Photo by Jeremy D'Entremont.
Russ Rowlett (Univ. of North Carolina) Host Jeremy D'Entremont is joined by co-host Michelle Jewell Shaw. When Russ Rowlett was growing up in Richmond, Virginia, his only exposure to lighthouses was climbing the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse when his family vacationed at Virginia Beach. Russ started his web site, The Lighthouse Directory, in 1999, and it kept growing until, by 2009, it covered the whole world. It's one of the most useful lighthouse information sites on the Internet, and Russ is the first guest on this episode of Light Hearted. Bob Muller Bob Muller was the founding president of the Long Island Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society in New York. He has been involved in lighthouse research, education, lecturing, and preservation for twenty years. In this first installment of The (non-political) Muller Report, Bob updates us on the restoration efforts for Stepping Stones Lighthouse, the westernmost lighthouse in Long Island Sound, a project in which Bob has been personally involved. In a history segment, Michelle and Jeremy relate the story of Willie Williams, longtime (1883-1911) keeper of Maine's remote Boon Island Light Station, who said in retirement: “There were days when I first went on the station that I could not get away from the idea that I was the same as locked up in a cell." William C. Williams, courtesy of Jim Claflin Jeff Zappen The next interview is Jeff Zappen, who retired in December 2018 after 28 years as a Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. Jeff is still working for the Coast Guard as a Waterways Management Specialist in Port Orchard, Washington. Jeremy interviewed Jeff during a visit to the U.S. Lighthouse Society’s headquarters in Hansville, Washington, last January. The conversation involves the evolving nature of the Coast Guard’s role with America’s lighthouses and other aids to navigation.
From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/tast-025-heyday-farm-creamery/ Heyday Farm Creamery proprietors Vicky and John McGarrity visited the BCB Tastes of Bainbridge booth at the July 30 Farmers’ Market. Listen here as the McGarritys explain why they have moved their entire operation to Bainbridge Island from Hansville to join the Heyday Team. Now producing their signature goats milk cheeses on Bainbridge, they'll soon be offering cows' milk cheeses, and by next spring they plan to bring out sheep milk cheeses. Vicky and John are committed to achieving the highest level of quality in the food they produce. Here they discuss some of the processes that are required to produce their cheese varieties, including the unique pasturing system that allows them to grass feed their animals and use a barley fodder process when fresh grass is hard to find. And did you know you could hear taste? We decided to try: there was an on-air tasting that explored the various and subtle differences in the cheeses. Listen and see if you can feel the flavor!
