Today's episode is a sneak peak from our upcoming summit. We speak with Drs. Lindsay and Lexie Kite, authors of More Than a Body, about how parents can help their children develop a healthy body image in a world that often prioritizes appearance over well-being. We explore the concept of self-objectification and how societal pressures, especially through media, can lead kids—particularly girls—to view their bodies as ornaments rather than instruments. The Kites emphasize body image resilience, encouraging parents to challenge harmful beauty standards and model a positive relationship with their own bodies. They share practical strategies for fostering a healthier mindset in children, including focusing on what bodies can do rather than how they look, promoting media literacy, and reinforcing self-worth beyond appearance. This episode offers essential insights for parents looking to raise confident, body-positive kids in today's image-focused culture. Up first today is Deej's catastrophy that prompts a discussion about misplacing your shit and what assholes our children can be. Kites are lame, and so is National Kite Day. At least according to Mitch. Mostly because he just can't seem to get it up. What's not so lame? The Feast of the Ass, which apparently is now Mitch's new favorite holiday. In this week's news - a vegan and gluten free bakery allegedly passed off Dunkin Donuts as their product. How effed up is that?! Thankfully our local (DuBois) Dunkin' friend Jordan has Deej's back in terms of his allergies. Thanks Jordan for being an awesome human being! This week's discussion centers around food-related sayings and why we use them. We think it's safe to say that origins of food idioms are generally really dumb. Tonight, we'll read excerpts from “Healthful Sports for Boys”, written by A.R. Calhoun and published in 1882. Also known as Alfred Rochfort, born in 1844, Calhoun was an American soldier, author, journalist and critic. He served in the Union army during the U.S. Civil War. "Healthful Sports for Boys," was a guide to engaging in physical activities that promoted health and well-being. One popular game covered in the book was marbles. Calhoun likely saw the value in marbles not just as a fun pastime, but also as a way to develop hand-eye coordination, strategic thinking, and social skills. Glass marbles ultimately came into being around the middle of the 1800's, not too long before this book was written. It is believed that they were first created by glassmakers who shaped bits of leftover glass at the end of the day to take home for their children. For Calhoun, games like this wasn't just about exercise. His book emphasized the importance of sportsmanship, fair play, and the development of character. Our episode tonight offers a glimpse into the sporting world of a bygone era, reflecting the values and ideals of the time. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Our special guest is back for a second installment, so we decided to show her exactly what Steve and Brandon put themselves through each week by playing a movie that is waaayyy less competently done than last week's episode. But first, we talk about our #dreams for a bit and look for a little analysis. Killer Kites: Abby receives a crappy plastic kite as part of her grandmother's estate. Unbeknownst to Abby, this isn't just some ordinary kite. It is a blood-thirsty communist PInko kite set on the destruction of capitalist society. After the mysterious death of her brother, Abby has to assemble a crack squad to combat the Red Kite menace. Boys From County Hell final grade: Steve An upper-echelon movie for the ultra-low-budget set. I was entertained. Jokes hit. The movie's lead star was better than expected. 4.0/5.0 Brandon A good way to kill an hour or so. Not my favorite of the micro-budget movies, though, so have to rank it lower than some others. 3.5/5.0 Amanda I was entertained by the absurdity, but the story itself was underdeveloped. It left me with a lot of unanswered questions. 3.2/5.0 Cocktail of the Week: Plastic Kite 1 1/2 oz Bourbon 3/4 oz Amaro 1/4 oz Campari 3/4 oz Fresh-Squeezed Lemon Juice 1/4 oz Simple Syrup Combine everything in a cocktail shaker. Shake to chill and combine. Serve in a martini glass. As usual, feel free to chill the glass if you want. Double strain it if you want. Garnish if you want. Make it your own. Cocktail Grade: A good variation of the more famous Paper Plane. Even our non-bourbon-fan control group said the drink was "not terrible." Bourbon fans will give it higher marks. 4/5 ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support

This goofy confection of Sunshine Pop was so at odds with the popular music of the day that it seemed doomed from the start. The Dedrick family, (Chris, Sandy, Bruce, Ellen, and Stephanie), were so unhip that the classical-jazz compositional genius of Chris Dedrick and the sublime sibling harmonies on display were incomprehensible to the rock intelligentsia. (There were The Cowsills, of course…but….) For God's sake, The Free Design were produced by Enoch Light, of all people - ( I always loved that name) - my dad's “Easy Listening” guru; it was the music he had on in the background when he did his weekend paperwork. They only existed as a group from '67-'72, after which Chris pursued an award winning, film composing and arranging career in Canada. And, here's where the trajectory of this esoteric ditty arcs interestingly: their only charting song, Kites Are Fun barely peaked at 114 on the “bubbling under the hot 100” list, after which the group plummeted to obscurity.  But, later, much later, like an excavated Paleolithic fossil, their catalogue was uncovered in the 1990's, and reissued by Trattoria, a Japanese record label. Since then, this tune has been lauded, covered extensively, TikTok'ed, and featured in numerous tv commercials and shows. And, now, no one can deny that kites are most assuredly fun.

Living the Dream, Facing the Nightmare: An Interview with Alan C. Mack This week's Team Never Quit guest is a decorated war hero and an extraordinary pilot whose military career spanned nearly 36 years, including 17 years in Army Special Operations. Alan C. Mack, a retired Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5), shares his incredible journey from a young man with a passion for flying to a highly respected leader in some of the most elite units of the U.S. military. Alan's expertise and leadership saw him involved in numerous high-stakes operations, many still classified. One of the most notable missions he discusses is the Battle of Takur Ghar, also known as the Battle of Roberts Ridge, during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan. Alan's bravery and skill under fire, including crash-landing a helicopter and attempting multiple rescue missions under heavy enemy fire, highlight his exceptional courage. Alan's distinguished service has earned him numerous awards, including the Legion of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Bronze Stars, ten Air Medals (one with a Valor device), and many more. His impressive flight record includes over 6,700 flight hours, with more than 3,200 hours under Night Vision Goggles. After retiring from the military, Alan continued to serve his community. He now works as the Deputy Commissioner of Emergency Services for Orange County, New York, a role that he appreciates for its peaceful nature compared to his military experiences. Alan's story is one of resilience, dedication, and the pursuit of one's dreams. Despite the adversities and challenges faced in combat, his journey is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome and find meaning in serving others. His life is an inspiration, showing that with determination and courage, it's possible to live out your dreams while also facing and conquering the nightmares. This episode will leave you both inspired and reflective. In This Episode You Will Hear: • The biggest cause of an air refueling incident is the grohe – it's a big hose – you are actually only 19' from rotors to tanker. (26:26) • [During air refueling] You're doing 110-120mph over the water. (27:00) • I've done air refueling as low as 100' off the coast of Iraq. (27:08) • I get a missile fired at me so now I drop down between buildings. I'm down on the rooftops and you know what's in front of me? Kites. Hundreds and hundreds of kites. (34:10) • The older [Chinook helicopter] Delta models just had handheld maps. (43:34) • [During Operation Red Wings] I sat down with the A10's and the AC130's with my map and the imagery and said “I need you to either suppress or creative a diversion that's so big no one could help but look. (50:15) • Crew Chiefs sometimes see things that aren't there (and I hate to say it that way) but sometimes they'll see lights of a car and think they're seeing signal light signals. (53:28) • Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. (55:00) • My youngest son was a Night Stalker Flight Engineer, and my oldest son is a Navy F18 wizzo (back seater) He's a Goose. (58:05) • I did 17 years with the Night Stalkers, plus about 10 years of deployment. (59:03) • Every aircraft munition has a probable kill ratio. A surface to air missile has a “PK” of 75%, meaning that if they fired at you, you have a 75% chance of killing you. The ground has a 100% PK. (64:23) • I've got about 3,500, maybe 4,000 hours of night vision time, which is a lot. (67:51) • Anaconda was a conventional operation, such as Red Wings. There's no soft component to it. (68:57) • We had 4 or 5 people on the aircraft tail, and we are diving at about 150, [one of our men that fell out but is tethered] while they're shooting at us and his toes are tickling the trees. The crew chief is returning fire with an M60 machine gun. He looks over and pulls our guy up, and I learned we had lost Neil [another guy] and decided we've gotta go back. So I turned inbound and climbed back up and the controls stopped moving. Imagine you pulled the keys out of your car. That's what it's like with no hydraulics. So I'm like “Guys… we're done,” as in “We're going to die.” (79:03) • In the spirit of never quit, there's a saying: ”Never quit flying the aircraft.” (83:22) • Everything I do in life, I associate with movies I've seen.
