We're joined by Allen Anderson, a veteran SNES coder, and one of the key programmers behind Rock n' Roll Racing. Starting as a teenage game cracker in Arkansas, he shares how hacking games led him into the industry, the chaos of SNES development with homemade dev kits, and how he programmed the Game Genie under insane deadlines, and the story behind the legendary cancelled Sega Saturn title, Propaganda. David Zahl is the director of Mockingbird Ministries and editor-in-chief of the Mocking Bird website. Born in New York City and brought up elsewhere, David graduated from Georgetown University in 2001, and then worked for several years as a youth minister in New England. In 2007 he founded Mockingbird in NYC. We talk about his latest book The Big Relief:the urgency of grace for a worn-out world. Today David and his wife Cate reside in Charlottesville, VA with their three boys, where David also serves on the staff of Christ Episcopal Church. He is also the author of A Mess of Help: From the Crucified Soul of Rock N' Roll and co-author of Law and Gospel: A Theology for Sinners (and Saints). His book, Seculosity: How Career, Parenting, Technlogy, Food, Politics, and Romance Became Our New Religion and What To Do About It, appeared in 2019 from Fortress Press. Even after all these years, he's still mourning the end of Calvin and Hobbes (and hoping that Morrissey and Marr will bury the hatchet). His favorite theologian is probably a cross between Johnny Cash, Flannery O'Connor and his brother Simeon.

This week we celebrate bands that can re-imagine their songs with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air… guitars! Electric artists have been playing acoustically since the beginning of recorded music. Most songwriters start the process with an acoustic instrument and capturing the sound of a song on just wire and wood has a vulnerable, human feel to it. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss the FORGOTTEN. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artist that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.Songs this week include:The Gems – “Like A Phoenix (Acoustic Version)” from Phoenix (2024)Cicadstone – “Burn Your Name (Acoustic)” from Future Echoes (Acoustic EP) (2024)Dokken – “In My Dreams” from One Live Night (1996) Rise Against – “Swing Life Away” from Punk Goes Acoustic (2003)Twelve Foot Ninja – “Kingdom (Acoustic)” from Mutant Dreams And Face Transplants: An Acoustic Experience (2024)Joey Eppard – “Dregs” from Joey Eppard Live In Concert (2013)Megadeth – “Symphony Of Destruction (Acoustic Live)” from Unplugged In Boston (Live 2001) (2001)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria StoreCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

For our 350th episode, we present to you the fantastic, world-renowned Rock ‘n Roll singer-songwriter-musician-poet and author, Suzi Quatro, who happens to be making her second appearance on StoryBeat. Suzi's been writing and performing music since she was in her teens and is widely considered to be one of the most influential rock bassists and singers of her generation.Suzi has sold over 55 million records, putting out such hits as 48 Crash, Devil Gate Drive, The Wild One, She's In Love With You, If You Can't Give Me Love, and her duet with Chris Norman, Stumblin' In.Suzi's also well-known for playing Leather Tuscadero on the hit TV Series, Happy Days, as well as for her various other TV appearances.Suzi turned her bestselling autobiography, Unzipped, into her one woman show, which premiered at London's Hippodrome in 2007.A prolific poet and writer, Suzi has published such books of poetry as Through My Eyes, Through My Heart, Through My Words, and Through My Thoughts. Her first novel, The Hurricane, was released in 2017, and she recently published her latest novel, Grave Undertakings. I've read Grave Undertakings and can tell you it's a fantastic dive into the minds of a college psychology class, and what happens when the small group of students and their professor analyze themselves and one another revealing their own inner lives and sensibilities. This is the rare work of fiction that I believe should be taught in psychology classes everywhere.Aside from her wonderful writing, Suzi continues to tour and release new albums.
You know they got hell of a band.
What's your Favourite Beatles Cover, Art? Or, more generally, for those listeners not named Art, what's your Favourite Beatles Cover Art? There are seemingly endless global 7” and 12” covers from which to choose. Despite all but a small few ever being authorized by the Fabs, a good many are iconic, super weird, or a mesmerizing combination of both. Loyal listener and Patreon member Mick B brought us this great suggestion, inspired by the live-performance photo on the cover of “The Beatles In Italy”; which, indeed features hits by The Beatles! Just not live. Or “In Italy”. Maybe Bruce Spizer will help us sue Calderstone/Odeon for fraud??? In this episode, the Cover Two (#GOBEARS) show…and tell…and show, if you smash this link for our WORLD PREMIERE SHOW VIDEO, their Favourite Beatles Cover Art. Along the way, they ask the hard hitting questions that those grotty, non-officially-Apple-authorized podcasts are too meat free Saturday, chicken-substitute-s**t to ask, like:

This is Play That Rock n' Roll's special FULL TEAM COVERAGE of the announcement stating that WARREN ZEVON is a 2025 inductee for the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME! This roundtable discussion features Chad Kushins (author of NOTHING'S BAD LUCK: The Lives of Warren Zevon), former radio host Anita Gevinson (who wrote about her relationship with Warren in her book, YOU TURN ME ON, I'M A RADIO), and photographer George Gruel (who wrote about his time as Warren's best friend and road manager in his book LAWYERS, GUNS, & PHOTOS). In this episode, we celebrate the news of Warren being inducted and discuss WHY he is deserving of this honor. Chad gives some backstory about why it took so long for Warren to be inducted, while Anita and George tell some hysterical stories about him. Anita also shares her memories of singer/songwriter (and Warren's friend) Jill Sobule, who tragically passed away recently. Finally, we built an "entry point" playlist of Warren Zevon songs for those who are new to his catalog or perhaps are only familiar with "Werewolves of London". In 1985, David Lee Roth was out and Sammy Hagar was in. One of the biggest lead singer shakeups in music history led to some of the biggest sales of Van Halen's career. It also led to more drama, to Lamborghinis and Ferraris racing through the streets of Los Angeles, to military assault vehicles storming Beverly Hills, to crazed fans and loaded guns – and at the middle of it all, a modern-day warrior, a man with a code, trying to orchestrate his own survival. Movie & Music mega-fan/Podcaster Crewmember Mike Ensing takes his best shot at the chaotic movie set fixing game: NO-BUDGET FILMMAKING DISASTERS! This time, our guest must improve a Rock N' Roll music drama that's in disarray due to: *most of its soundtrack being public domain tunes, *the crew trying to make the production look cinematic (and not look Hallmark-like) *and untalented castmembers who can't sing but who also can't be fired due to being nephews of the producers. How will Mike stop this ship from sinking and keep everyone's careers afloat? Tune in for comedic movie-related mayhem! SONG USED: "Time Passing By" by AudioNautix. This is Play That Rock n' Roll's interview with author C.M. Kushins about his book "BEAST: John Bonham and The Rise of Led Zeppelin". In this conversation, we talk about why he wanted to write about John Bonham, how Chad navigated the myths and legends that surround Led Zeppelin, and what sets this book apart from all the other biographies about this band. We also discuss the new documentary “Becoming Led Zeppelin” and Chad shares his thoughts about what Zeppelin might have done if Bonham had not tragically passed away when he did. Also, Chad has a new book that will be released later this year called “COOLER THAN COOL: The Life and Work of Elmore Leonard”. We talk a bit about this one as well. What are the origins of Britain's original bad boys, The Rolling Stones? Where did they all come from and how did they meet? What was it about the 1960s, with its air of sexual liberation, newly elected Labour government, and rising youth culture that allowed them to burst onto the musical scene? Who was Brian Jones, the band's troubled founder? And, what made the Rolling Stones, even from the earliest stages, so much more controversial than The Beatles? Join Dominic and Tom as they discuss the rise of one of history's greatest, sexiest, and most suavely devilish bands, and the glaring light they shed upon the tumultuous 1960s. _______ Twitter: @TheRestHistory @holland_tom @dcsandbrook Producer: Theo Young-Smith Assistant Producer: Tabby Syrett + Aaliyah Akude Executive Producers: Jack Davenport + Tony Pastor Learn more about your ad choices. Cut your lava lamp on, gaze at that blacklight poster through the haze of smoke, and join your favorite rock n' roll grave robbers as they dig deep into the core of 70s Acid Rock n' Proto Metal crypt to unearth some obscure bands that helped influence and mold what would become known as Heavy Metal. KNOW GOOD MUSIC Interviews LAURIE KAYE Laurie wrote a great book called "CONFESSIONS OF A ROCK N' ROLL NAME DROPPER : My life leading up to John Lennon's Last Interview. We talk to Laurie about her career in radio with the RKO NETWORK (KFRC) in the 7o's and some of the people she interviewed like David Bowie, Mick Jagger, George Harrison and of course, John Lennon who she interviewed on Dec 8th, 1980 at the Dakota hours before he was murdered. Her book is a great look into the 70s and how she got to experience some great concerts and encounters with Rock Legends first hand. Matt and Rob read the book and loved it! Loved how Laurie incorperated the dialogue from her interviews into the book (the audio version has excerpts from the actual interviews) ***** ABOUT THE BOOK and LAURIE Rock reporter Laurie Kaye interviewed John Lennon just hours before he was murdered in 1980 outside New York's famous Dakota apartments and even ran into his assassin (whom she refuses to cite by name) on the street outside, and here she recounts the story of that fateful night, the centerpiece of this memoir about the life of a SoCal girl with a troubled childhood who got to live out her dream by interviewing many of the most famous rock stars of the time. Name dropping? Well, they say it ain't bragging if you really did it and Laurie Kaye has really done it. These stories about so many culturally important people are exciting and illuminating. I read this book with pleasure and amazement. I know that you will dig it, too! On December 8, 1980, twenty-something rock journalist Laurie Kaye entered the legendary Dakota apartments on Manhattan's Upper West Side to co-conduct an interview with her longtime idol, John Lennon. It was the last interview Lennon would ever give—just hours later, outside that same building, Lennon was shot dead by a twenty-five-year-old man (whom Kaye refuses to refer to by name) whom Kaye herself had encountered after finishing the interview and stepping outside onto the street. Kaye has beaten herself up ever since over her failure to recognize that the assassin—who blocked her path and harassed her with questions like “Did you talk to him?” “Did you get his autograph?”—posed a danger and should have been reported. Now, as we approach the forty-fifth anniversary of Lennon's death, Kaye reflects how she rose from teen runaway from a dysfunctional family to expatriate studying Balinese dancing in Indonesia to journalist, writer, and producer with credits including RKO Presents The Beatles/The Beatles from Liverpool to Legend (at the tender age of twenty-one) and the Lord of the Rings DVD release, plus interviews with such titans of the music industry as Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Talking Heads, The Ramones, David Bowie, and Mick Jagger, whom she put on hold so that he could listen to her newscast before getting down to business. But it was the day she shared a loveseat with John Lennon and watched him push his iconic granny glasses down the length of his nose and smile at her in agreement that remains indelibly etched in her mind—both the best and worst day of her life. Laurie Kaye began her career in radio at KFRC-AM San Francisco, for years one of the nation's greatest top 40 stations, where she started as an intern and worked her way up to on-air reporter and anchor. She wrote and coproduced numerous radio rock specials for RKO, including RKO Presents the Beatles (later expanded and retitled as The Beatles from Liverpool to Legend), and The Top 100 of the 70's before moving on to write Dick Clark's weekly radio countdown show and syndicated newspaper column. Kaye then moved on to television and film as a writer, producer, and casting director. This book won a Writer's Digest Award the year it was released - 4th place in the Memoir/Personal Essay category of their annual writing competition! ************ VISIT LAURIE'S WEBSITE to find out her upcoming appearances and links to purchase and listen to the book (audio includes experts from her interviews). www.confessionsofarocknrollnamedropper.com ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found almost anywhere you listen to podcasts including Podbean (host site), Spotify , Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and YOUTUBE Links to more sources at Link Tree - www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic Help support our Podcast by purchasing some cool merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/knowgoodmusic Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video segments from all of our interviews. With his spiked blond hair, perpetual sneer, and gloved hands clenched in defiance, Billy Idol seemed like an avatar of punk rock dreamed up by central casting. But Idol's look, his attitude, and especially his music were completely authentic. He was a pure rock 'n' roll animal. Few rock stars lived a life as hedonistic and debaucherous as Billy Idol, and even fewer lived to tell the tale. Who is the most debaucherous star you've heard about in Disgraceland? "Play That Rock n' Roll" proudly presents the second part of a special mini-series that details the incredible life and career of songwriter Jimmy Buffett. We are joined by my friend Chris to explore Buffett's full studio catalog, track by track. In this episode, we cover a soundtrack he recorded for a largely-forgotten comedy film, the introduction of the Coral Reefer Band, and a hot streak of hit records that made up the most successful period of his catalog, which included his career-defining hit song "Margaritaville". We also settle, once and for all, the debate over what goes on a proper Cheeseburger in Paradise. We are also joined by Stephanie Myers from the Songfacts Podcast, as she visits the pod to share some thoughts on her favorite album of Jimmy's, which was released during this era. Once upon a time, there was a girl with a song in her heart. Her name was Sister Rosetta Tharpe - a guitar-playing, gospel-singing legend whose unique style and stage-presence inspired the greatest rock musicians of the last century. She is known as the godmother of rock n' roll and was posthumously inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. [This episode originally aired September 2021.] About the Narrator Kateri Bluford is an American singer, born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who gained national and international acclaim after appearing on Season 2 of The Four starring Sean Combs, DJ Khaled, Megan Trainor and host Fergie. Bluford captivated audiences with her powerful rendition of Tasha Cobbs “I'm Getting Ready” and Celine Dion's legendary Grammy Award winning song “Because You Loved Me”. As a rising star, the young artist stays true to her deeply rooted faith and the inspiration of her mentors Bishop Darrell and Pastor Pamela Hines. There is a divine power that resonates when Bluford performs that harkens to her Gospel roots, something she embraces in the entirety of her life. “I'm on a mission to heal the world” commented Kateri, who has struggled over the years with her own identity and self- confidence. There is power in music and Kateri Bluford is on a trajectory of success and transformation. Kateri Bluford also toured with Jonathan Mcreynolds this past spring and summer of 2019.
