The new President of Shannon Chamber claims the institution has been "Shannoncentric" and "elitist" in the past. Former Managing Director of Dromoland Castle Hotel, Mark Nolan, has been appointed the new President of Shannon Chamber, succeeding Eoin Gavin of Eoin Gavin Transport who held the office for three years. Nolan has been a director of the chamber of commerce since 2009 and is also the founder of Hallmark Management Limited which undertakes small design and fit-out projects for five-star hotels. He says areas like Newmarket-on-Fergus deserve the chamber's full attention.

The incoming President of Ennis Chamber has described the lack of functioning wastewater treatment plants in the town as "preposterous". According to Uisce Éireann's register, there is no available capacity at the Clareabbey sewerage plant, although an upgrade is planned. It's unlikely that any proposed developments near the plant can happen until the works are complete, and the local authority is now being urged to rezone lands for residential use near the Clon Road facility instead. Diarmuid McMahon of Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon Real Estate Agents says development has effectively been sterilised for half the town.

ShopLK, Letterkenny's shop local initiative, has attained a record breaking year of sales, the 20th consecutive year of growth for the programme. Annual sales of ShopLK Gift Cards for 2024 reached €7,059,234, an increase of €1.3m on 2023, making the program the top selling local gift card in Ireland. The initiative celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024 The record breaking year of shop local sales for Letterkenny follows an increase in corporate sales and the introduction of a raft of technological advancements for the programme including the digital ShopLK Gift Card and the ability to pick up cards in person and load with value. Commenting on the most recent achievement, Claire McDonough, Chamber President said: "Each year since our ShopLK Gift Cards were launched, we have had year on year sales increases. We were cautious this year with making a prediction after hitting such a huge milestone last year, so we have been blown away by this figure that has far exceeded all our expectations. "Our corporate sales continue to increase as businesses chose the ShopLK Gift Card as a reward for their employees and this year we welcomed new corporate customers from around the county recognising that Letterkenny is regarded as the main retail centre of the county. "Corporate sales are only part of the success story. The Chamber Office and the pop-up shop in The Courtyard Shopping centre were busier than ever right up to Christmas eve. This year we also had the ShopLK digital card as an alternative to the physical card and the 'Load this Card' option has also proven really popular. "As ShopLK Gift Cards are only redeemable in over 260 outlets in Letterkenny, this brings profit to the town and supports local jobs. ShopLK is all about supporting local shopping, sales of this level shows that the message has gotten through. Customers love the variety and the support it offers in their favourite outlets." Toni Forrester, CEO at Letterkenny Chamber, commented: "What a busy year it was. 2024 saw us move into a new partnership with Town & City Gift Card provider Miconex; this has given us much more scope in terms of a digital offering that has proved very popular, web sales were also up on last year and all round we are now able to offer a better online service. "As we headed into December we knew it was busy but this sales level has really surprised us. This is the biggest town scheme in Ireland and we appreciate our customers who have bought cards in their thousands and the many businesses who use ShopLK as their preferred employee reward." The digital version of the ShopLK Gift Card can be added to digital wallets, enabling 'tap to pay' New digital technology for corporate organisations was also introduced in the latter part of 2024, allowing organisations to send ShopLK Gift Cards to multiple recipients at once, immediately or on a future date. Colin Munro is the managing director of Miconex and said: "It has been fantastic to work alongside Letterkenny Chamber in 2024 to help take this trailblazing local gift card to the next level of growth. The introduction of the new digital ShopLK Gift Card for both consumers and corporate organisations enhanced accessibility and convenience of the card, encouraging even more people to make the move to local. "With the Irish Revenue's Small Benefit Exemption Scheme now increased to €1,500 from January 1st, local gift cards like the ShopLK Gift Card give employers the chance to gift their staff a tax free benefit that also benefits their community." Acknowledging the support of Donegal County Council, Claire McDonough added: "The financial support that we have had from the Donegal County Council, Letterkenny Milford MD, has really enabled us to elevate ShopLK over the years and really establish the brand. It has allowed us to promote Letterkenny across Donegal and the North West. "Letterkenny Chamber could not run this highly successful initiative without the support of DSP Community Employment progr...
Elected officials in Rhode Island have been trying to reinvent the state's economy practically since the Great Depression -- and it remains a work in progress. During his State of the State speech on Tuesday, Governor Dan McKee cited an upbeat message. He says Rhode Island is flipping the script on outdated narratives about being an economic laggard. But polling shows Rhode Islanders do not share McKee's optimism about the state being headed in the right direction. The state still lacks the kind of more diversified economy found in Massachusetts. And the possible move out of state by Hasbro shows how unexpected changes can quickly emerge. As president of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce since 2005, Laurie White has a front row seat on these issues. So what are the top obstacles to building a better economy -- and does the chamber have any bright ideas for making things better? This week on Political Roundtable, I'm going in-depth with president of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce Laurie White.

Welcome to Season Two of Business Matters! Coming to you from the WIN Technology Studio, and a special thank you to our media sponsor, Royal Credit Union. In this episode, Chamber President & CEO Dave Minor sits down with Shawn Kapanke of Silver Spring Foods to celebrate Manufacturing Month and discuss the vital role manufacturing plays in the Eau Claire community. Silver Spring Foods, a family-owned business for over 90 years, is known for its iconic mustard and horseradish, which have put Eau Claire on the map in the food manufacturing world.
The President of Shannon Chamber has accused politicial representatives of "putting up obstacles" to renewable energy progress. With confirmation being given in the Dáil that sites for offshore wind development off Clare's coast will be zoned next year, key stakeholders are expressing frustration with the pace at which progress is being made. Launched last June, the Shannon Estuary Economic Taskforce report identifies harvesting 30 gigawatts on Atlantic wind energy by 2050 as one of its primary goals. This, it's stated, would satisfy Ireland's current electricity demand five times over, while the process would create an estimated 10,000 green jobs in this region by 2035. Responding to Inagh Green Party Senator Róisín Garvey in the Dáil, Green Party Minister of State for the Environment Ossian Smyth has confirmed that a map to zone areas off Clare's coast for offshore wind projects, known as a Designated Maritime Area Plan, or DMAP, will begin next year. The ESB has been granted planning permission to convert Moneypoint Power Station from a coal-fired to a heavy fuel oil facility prior to its transition to a renewable energy hub. Chairperson of the Shannon Estuary Economic Taskforce Barry O'Sullivan says what this region needs is strong political representation from those who are committed to getting renewable energy projects over the line. The confirmation that the DMAP for the West Coast will commence in 2025 has come in the same week than An Bórd Pleanála has stated it no longer stands over its previous decision to uphold the grant of planning permission for a data centre in Ennis. Plans for the data centre have been shrouded in controversy since they were first lodged with Clare County Council in 2021, with 60 submissions made in objection. Shannon Chamber President Eoin Gavin insists politicians should be finding solutions instead of simply expressing their opposition to proposed developments.
As an adult living in Seattle, Shoreline and Mukilteo, WA, Tita considered herself apolitical. She researched candidates and issues and voted but she had no thoughts of being involved in local government. But, when she moved to Seaside in 2002, she started attending city council meetings, as well as commission, committee and board meetings because she thought that's what a responsible citizen should do. Within a couple of years she was elected to the board of the downtown development association and became the Chamber President. In 2004 she led a group which sued city hall for the right of citizens to vote on whether to allow ODOT to make 101 through Seaside into a five lane highway. Not many people can say they sued city hall and won! Not only did the citizens get to vote, 57% of those voting turned down ODOT's proposal which would have destroyed 17 businesses and more than 70 homes. You could say that most of the city council members were not her fans. When she ran for office in 2006, the other guy got ONE more vote than she; but, in 2010 she was both appointed and elected to the council where she has served the city of Seaside for the last 14 years. During her years in Seaside, Tita has also co-owned a fabric store, worked as the Business & Community Liaison at Tongue Point Job Corps Center as well as the executive director of the Seaside Downtown Development Association. She estimates she has served on twenty or so boards, councils and commissions during the past 22 years. And this is the person who just had her sights on being a Library Board member when she moved to Seaside.

From the most powerful voice for Business in Michigan. The Michigan Chamber Business Brief. Jim Holcomb is the Chamber President. State of the State Reaction.
The President of Shannon Chamber believes developers and proprietors of vacant buildings need to be provided with incentives in order to boost housing supply. It comes as the Economic and Social Research Institute has called on the government to introduce a tax on commercial construction in order to meet the needs of the growing population. There are currently 2,790 households awaiting an offer of social housing here, with over 50% of this group seeking accommodation in Ennis and Shannon. Shannon Chamber President Eoin Gavan says the state's reluctance to engage with the local authority is preventing the necessary development.
An Ennis retailer is adamant the government must intervene to prevent soaring wage bills from forcing businesses into insolvency. A new report published by Deloitte has found that Ireland had its highest number of corporate insolvencies since 2018 last year with 663 businesses finding themselves unable to pay their debts. As of January 1st, the national minimum wage is €12.70 per hour which many business owners says will lead to a significant surge in their week-to-week costs. CEO of Retail Excellence and owner of Willow in Ennis Jean McCabe believes many businesses will be forced to close their doors if they the government doesn't ease the pressure placed on them by rising wage costs.
The Shannon Chamber of Commerce claims the government is failing to action on renewable energy projects in the county. In June, the Independent Shannon Estuary Taskforce found that by 2035, the catchment area has the potential to produce enough green electricity to achieve net zero status and create 10,000 new jobs. However Shannon Chamber believes enabling initiatives such as zoning Atlantic waters for development and including a 400 MW(Mega-Watt) floating wind demonstrator in the schedule of works must happen urgently to realise this. President Eoin Gavan says both our environmental and economic future is at stake.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, Sept. 10 Recent data shows tourism in West Virginia continues to grow by leaps and bounds…the Mountain State's forest products industry generates $3.2 billion a year…and, thinking of digging ginseng? The medicinal herb has many uses, but Forestry wants to make sure you follow the rules...on today's daily304. #1 – From THE GAZETTE-MAIL – West Virginia's tourism industry continues to grow year over year, according to West Virginia Department of Tourism data revealed at the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce's annual business summit recently at The Greenbrier Resort. The data show West Virginia tourism-related content received more than 7 billion impressions in 2022 — more than doubling 2021 numbers. Visitor spending generated more than $754 million in tax revenue for the state that same year. “We have the newest national park in 2022 and West Virginia was the only state to get on every major travel list,” Chamber President and CEO Tricia Ball said. “CNN named us as one of the most underrated travel destinations. USA Today named us a top family destination and Lovely Planet ranked us as the No. 2 travel region ranking only behind Iceland.” According to the West Virginia Department of Tourism, the industry accounts for about 44,000 jobs across the state and 21,000 job openings are projected within the next few years. West Virginia's beautiful, forested mountains make it the second-leading hardwood state in the country, ranked third nationally by percentage of forested land. The forest products industry—which is made up of loggers, sawmills, dry kilns, veneer plants and furniture and rustic rail fence producers—generates $3.2 billion for the state economy every year and employs more than 30,000 people in highly skilled and technical positions. Companies such as AHF Products, Gat Creek, Weyerhaeuser and Columbia Forest Products, among others, make use of the state's 12 million acres of forestland and 75 billion board feet of timber inventory in an industry that reaches all 55 counties. The promise of expansion, sustainability and an already skilled workforce positions West Virginia as a critical provider of hardwoods as more and more companies focus on utilizing sustainable products, according to Eric Carlson, executive director of the West Virginia Forestry Association. Carlson said he would also like to see more secondary and finish manufacturing investments and new products, as well as innovation in harvesting equipment, develop in the Mountain State. “We have seen great cooperation with the state's economic development team to date, but we also need private equity investment to modernize the entire supply chain,” he says. “Like many businesses, it takes years to recoup the initial investment, and market demand for products is crucial.” Read more: https://wvexecutive.com/fundamental-forest-products/ #3 – From THE REGISTER-HERALD – Ginseng season is underway in West Virginia and runs through Nov. 30 Wild ginseng has been an ingredient in Appalachian culture, as well as medicinal folklore, for generations. West Virginia 'seng diggers have been looking to make money from the golden root for nearly 200 years. It has been used for centuries in North America and Asia for its purported medicinal properties. According to traditional folklore, ginseng roots are used in teas, soups, and medicines to treat sickness, increase vitality, relieve mental and physical fatigue, and prolong life. The West Virginia Division of Forestry closely monitors the harvesting of ginseng to protect ginseng supplies for the future. If you're a ginseng digger, consult (and heed!) the rules and regulations posted at wvforestry.com/ginseng-program. The site includes resources such as lists of West Virginia ginseng dealers and weigh stations.
