This week on Pour Minds, Lex P and Drea Nicole are back with a solo episode that quickly spirals into one of their funniest debates yet: why young people with old names always seem to act up. From Harriet, Bernice, and Bartholomew to whether “Rubi” only works if you add the Rose, the ladies play the ultimate Name Game—and even reveal the cringey “dream baby names” they came up with back in the day. The laughs don’t stop there. Lex and Drea unpack Kash Doll’s natural-hair era, argue over whether juniors should exist for women, and side-eye folks who keep their last name after marriage. Then it’s time for our very first Business Spotlight with Jalisa, founder of Salt XO, the feminine wellness brand changing the game. Jalisa shares how she went from making soap in her college dorm to running a 7-year powerhouse brand with viral TikTok products. From waxing aftercare and scar-fading oils, to libido-boosting shower gels and even booty deodorant, she breaks down what makes Salt XO so effective—and why every woman (and her man) needs it. Of course, the Pour Minds couch keeps it messy and fun with candid girl talk about hygiene routines, sex aftercare, and why boric acid suppositories might just be the real MVP. This episode is sponsored by Taylor Port. Bold, bright, and unapologetic—just like the Pour Crew.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
They say that most businesses don't make it five years! So what about one that makes it SEVENTY FIVE years?? Today, we are talking about Ann's Dari-Creme up in Glen Burnie outside of the Marley Station Mall! There's a lot to unpack here, from a start in Coney Island to the change of ownership in 1976, when Howard and Thea Pinsky, along with their partner Joe, purchased the iconic "hot dog stand" based on the number of rolls purchased from a local bread distributor! Sadly, Howard passed away in 2021, but Joe and Howard's family are carrying on the tradition. Today, Joe joins us with Amy, Stacy, MaryLou, and longtime manager Cindy to talk about 75 years of goodness along Ritchie Highway. If there ever was a shining example of not messing with a good thing, Ann's is it. Spoiler, we tried to wrest a few secrets from the team, but failed miserably--so the chili, brand of dogs, and bread will remain a secret! On August 31st, they will kick off their 75th Anniversary all day with giveaways, t-shirts, ice cream, plenty of specials, and a surprise or two. Be sure to stop by and grab a double dog (as I did), or if you dare, a triple dog! What a great group and what a great, true legacy business in Anne Arundel County! Have a listen! What goes into a brand or a logo? A heck of a lot more than one might think. With Jennifer Cochran Designs, it all starts with a 4-page questionnaire! You see, before the ink hits the paper (and yes, that is how it starts with Jennifer), Jennifer Cochran Designs needs to know about you, your vision, your business (or side hustle), your competition, and a whole lot more, and that makes PERFECT sense! Today, Jennifer sits down with us to talk about her background and experience, and how she brings ideas to life for Anne Arundel County businesses and non-profits. Some of her challenging work and what drives the creative brain behind Jennifer Cochran Designs! Have a listen! LINKS: Jennifer Cochran Designs (Website)
This week, we venture to West Annapolis, where Root to Bloom is creating a safe, inspiring space for young girls and their mothers to connect in meaningful ways. Dr. Kim Palmiotto, the owner and guiding force behind Root to Bloom, sat down with us to share the vision behind her new business and the unique approach she's bringing to the community. Root to Bloom blends creative expression with personal connection, offering camps and classes in art, cooking, and other hands-on activities designed to spark conversation and deepen relationships. While Dr. Palmiotto is a trained therapist, she's quick to point out that these aren't therapy sessions—but the benefits can be just as powerful. In our conversation, we explored the challenges teen girls face today, from the pressures of social media to the need for safe spaces where they can express themselves without judgment. Dr. Kim also shared practical, encouraging ways parents can support their daughters during these critical years. Whether you're looking for a fun class to enjoy together, a summer camp that builds confidence, or simply a place where creativity and connection thrive, Root to Bloom is worth discovering because small moments of shared creativity can blossom into lasting bonds. Whether you're here for brunch, grabbing a biscuit sandwich on the go, or just chasing that perfect bite, Shreveport Biscuit Company has got something made just for you. Take a look at this video as the owner, Kanya Michelle, talks about how she enjoys interacting with the community.
Parents bring children into the world every minute of the day and it is a beautiful thing. But, let's face it, it can be stressful. If you are looking for a way to make it easier for mom, dad, and baby, this is your episode! Emily Encinosa of Expecting with Emily, is a local doula and midwife and her job is to be a "woman who serves" which also is the ancient Greek meaning of the word doula. From inception to post-partum, Emily is there every step of the way making sure your child birthing experience is as easy, safe, and hasslle-free as possible. How much more relaxing would it be to deliver at home in an environment you know? How reassuring would it be to have a trusted doula at your side? This week, we dive into it and learn all that and much more---too much more! Have a listen! LINKS: Expecting With Emily (Website) Expecting With Emily (Facebook) Expecting With Emily (Instagram)
Everyone loves a well-behaved dog. If you want one (or maybe yours needs a tune-up), AmericanK9 has you covered. Today we speak with Krys Ruth, a long-time dog trainer (fun fact, she trained the first ever bed bug sniffing dog) who trains dogs on a beautiful farm in Davidsonville. From chihuahuas to Irish wolfhounds, she and her team are more behaviorist than trainer as they read each dog's personality and figure out their touchpoints. In addition, she is a breeder of labs who are mostly used for service work--military, law enforcement, and psychological. We learned about some of the amazing things animals can do to help humans, and it all begins with a solid foundation of training. American K9 even has the Sniffspot--a private dog park just for you and your pooch (and maybe a few selected friends). Krys is not a fan of public dog parks--listen and see why! If you are looking to get a new puppy, or maybe your dog could use a refresher, or maybe you know someone who might need assistance from a service animal-- here's your sign (as Bill Engvall might say)! Times are changing. Forty years ago, someone with a developmental or mental disability was a candidate for institutionalized care. Today...not so much. And locally, we can thank Fello for that! Today we speak with Jonathon Rondeau, who is the President and CEO. Their services range from day services to workforce development to residential programs for clients and their families across the Chesapeake region on the Eastern and Western Shores of Maryland. We learned about the name change from The Arc and what sets them apart from other organizations in the same orbit. Jonathon has had a call to help quite literally since summer camp as a youth. And from that point on, he has dedicated himself to helping our neighbors with disabilities. Have a listen! LINKS: Fello (Website) Fello (Facebook) Fello (Instagram) Fello (Linked In) Fello (YouTube)
Often, a USNA grad will go on to do great things. And Joe Kirby is no exception. When Great Harvest Bread Company in West Annapolis was on the precipice of closing, Kirby swooped in and took the reins of this local icon. After a brief closure, Great Harvest Bread Company is alive, well, and thriving in the familiar red building at the corner of Ridgely and Melvin Avenues. And Kirby has plans for the future, including an expanded menu (can you say sandwiches and coffee), and an expanded building. We discuss the most popular breads, the way Great Harvest supports the community, and the different ways that organizations and businesses can always use a great loaf of bread--baked in West Annapolis that same day! Hungry yet? Go visit, and then... Have a listen! LINKS: Great Harvest Bread Company (Website) Great Harvest Bread Company (Facebook)
Vanessa Bright had an idea. What if formerly incarcerated individuals would not have such a tough time when they were released? And with that, the Maryland Re-Entry Resource Center (MDRRC) was born. There are so many barriers for formerly incarcerated people that often they end up committing more crime to figure a way to survive. MDRRC offers the resources and referrals needed to thrive post-release. From job coaching and resume writing, to helping find housing, to obtaining insurance or a drivers license, the MDRRC can help. The organization works very tightly with the Annapolis Police Department who has their own re-entry program; and they are even starting their own social enterprise to offer solid jobs for former inmates. In a world where. many are forgotten, MDRRC is making a difference for those who are just looking for a second chance. Have a listen! When was the last time you called your bank and a human answered the phone? Well, if you bank at Arundel Federal Savings Bank, the answer would have been "the last time I called my bank." THAT is one difference between a national bank and community one. Today, we spoke with Matt Mullen, the President of Arundel Federal, to learn all that a community bank can do for individuals and businesses alike. We also dive into fraud (spoiler: they take it VERY seriously) and some of the best ways to be safe. If you are not baking locally with a community bank, you should, and this Local Business Spotlight tells you why! Have a listen! Few of us can afford a yacht to cruise the Caribbean, Mediterranean, or even the Chesapeake Bay at will. But what if it was possible for a lot less than you think? Today we talk with Kirstie Palmer Tippett, the President of Waypoints Yacht Charters based right here in Eastport! If I don't sail, I can go to Waypoints and charter a boat for a week--they can provide a captain and crew. If I am an expert, I can go to Waypoints and charter a boat for a week and be on my way solo. And there are plenty of options in between. So, what is the Waypoints difference? It's personal. They are small enough to handle your charter from start to finish without passing you around to other departments or employees. Their boats are not part of a fleet, but are individually owned and managed for their owners. And with bases in Annapolis and the BVIs, they have team members nearby to handle any questions that might arise. Yacht Charters may be a misnomer as they truly are a vacation company, and much more! Have a listen! And then go cruise! LINKS: Waypoints Yacht Charters (Website) Waypoints Yacht Charters (Facebook) Waypoints Yacht Charters (Instagram)
Did you know that a bi-partisan commission has recommended non-partisan elections for the City of Annapolis for nearly 30 years? Did you realize that the increased assessments on property in Annapolis are causing your taxes to increase; yet allowing the City to claim they have not raised your taxes? Do you think that 7000 voters in the City of Annapolis should be allowed to participate in primary elections? Would you like to get a break on your tax bill? It's possible with two petitions that Annapolitans for a Better Community are circulating to allow the voters to answer those questions in the form of a ballot referendum in November. We sit down with Bill Kardash, one of the founders to discuss it and open our eyes. We dive deep, but a key takeaway is that the petitions are NOT a vote for or against--they are merely asking "permission" to allow the voters to decide in November. When looking at the non-partisan primary petition, in rough numbers there are 28,000 registered voters in the City with 14,000 registered Democrats, 7,000 registered Republicans, and 7,000 voters registered as unaffiliated or independent. In this election year, those 7,000 likely will have no say in who is elected Mayor of Annapolis (there are only two Democratic candidates and no Republicans, and currently unaffiliated voters are locked out of the primary). The tax petition is a bit more complex, but there are three taxes paid on a property--State, County, and City. While the County has voted to cap the increases at a maximum of a 2% increase, the City has not and has been collecting 10% increases as the assessments go up. The tax rate is not increased, which is a political talking point despite the revenue going up. The best example is a product for $100 is sold and the tax rate is 10%-- you will pay $10 in taxes on that product. Now the same product is in demand and the price increases to $125, you will now pay $12.50 in taxes. The tax rate did not increase, the value of the product did. In plain numbers, if your home was worth $600,000 in 2024 and the triennial assessment (phased in over 3 years) brought the value of your home to $744,000, your County tax would increase from $4,516.56 to $4,699.03 (due to the cap). However, on top of the County taxes, you pay a City tax as well, and using the same assumptions, your taxes would increase from $4,781.89 to $5,490.72. Both issues have nuances, but both issues deserve to be heard. Have a listen! If you found a dollar on the ground in the parking lot and wanted to do something good with it, I have a suggestion for you. Give the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County a call. Today, we chat with John Rodenhausen, the Director of Gift Planning, to talk about philanthropy. It is not just for the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and DuPonts. It is for the Smiths and Joneses, too! And you don't need a lot of money to make a huge difference in our community. We discuss what a community foundation actually is, why someone wants to work with them, why non-profits want to work with them, and how to get started. More importantly, we discuss the needs right here in Anne Arundel County and how great it is. In fact, there is a new tri-annual study coming out this summer--put it on your summer reading list. When you see a problem, you do what you can to fix it! And that is what compelled Julie Shay to start the Good Neighbors Group! What started as word-of-mouth, neighborhood chit-chat, morphed into a community newsletter and is now a full-blown non-profit determined to reduce waste in our community by recycling, repurposing, and rehoming. Sure we all know about recycling, but how much thought do we give to renovations or upgrades? But their efforts do not stop there. From Donations Before Dumpsters to their Annual Earth Day Festival, to One Clean Block--their impact is spreading! Today's spotlight will get you thinking of ways that you can help. And Julie and her team of helpers are there to, well, help! Have a listen! And if you know of a commercial building owner that wants to help out a great cause... have then listen as well! This is NOT your normal dentist! Dr. Yasamin Roland has re-invented her practice! Sure, you can get cleanings and fillings and all the standard dentistry at the Center for Transformative Dentistry; but Dr. Roland has transformed her vision to focus on the whole body and how dental health relates to it. Oxygen is critical for health and sometimes teeth may impede the flow as jawbones have shrunk as we have evolved. A nice smile is a mental boost to a giver or a recipient. She offers a different approach to dentistry. She provides a broad scope of dental and orthodontic techniques that address underlying causes, not just the symptoms. It's a “whole body approach” that is non-invasive for children and adults alike. There were several "a-ha" moments in here for me, and I am sure there will be for you as well! Have a listen! OK, so the title is a little dramatic (and abbreviated). It is the title of a book by local author, Susan Moynihan -- 100 Things to Do in Annapolis and the Eastern Shore Before You Die! And while some of these types of books are geared to tourists in town for a weekend, this one is not. Sure, it serves that purpose, but no matter if you are here for a few days, or have lived here your entire life, there will be something unexpected and cool you will discover! We all know about Chick & Ruth's Delly, but how many know about the Modern Stone Age Kitchen in Chestertown? That's the advantage of having a book written by an almost lifelong resident. It's a fast and easy read and is the perfect book to have around the house for when your guests say, "What should we do?" Own an Airbnb? Are you a realtor? Maybe you work at a local hotel? Unlike your kids or your dogs, when you call them, they come! I am talking about the 1000+ men and women who make up the Anne Arundel County Fire Department! Sure, the department is an arm of the County Government, but the IAFF Local 1563 is the Union that collectively bargains for their pay and benefits, makes sure that they are staffed safely, and they are getting the support they need. After all, they see some pretty horrid things in the course of their duty! Today, we speak with Joe Addivinola, the long-time President of IAFF Local 1563, to see how the union plays a role. And, it is a lot larger than I imagined! From literacy campaigns to coat drives, our Firefighters, EMTs, and Paramedics go all out for the community when they are not working that 24 on 3 off shift! Did you know that the Union owns a four-story building in Millersville? Did you know there is a huge banquet room that can be rented out? Did you know they are a nonprofit, and you can donate directly to support their work? Me either! Joe even lets us know his thoughts about Anne Arundel County Executive Pittman! Pets are family! And no one knows that better than Dr. Megan Martorana. After practicing for many years, Dr. Megan decided to put four wheels under her practice and bring the vet to you. Enter Annapolis Area Mobile Vet! Look it's stressful going to a people doctor. Imagine the stress for a beloved cat or dog? Here, get in this crate... drive around for a while and wham-- some guy in a white coat is poking your butt with a needle. Was it a trip to the vet? Or an abduction! Annapolis Area Mobile Vet takes a different approach. Think of her as your old-time primary care physician. She comes to your home (or wherever your loved one may be) and introduces herself and offers a treat and a belly rub to get acquainted. Once comfortable, your dog or cat can be cared for in the place where they are most comfortable. Need a bonus ? Instead of a quick check by the doc, Dr. Megan will spend as long as it takes to make you and your pet comfortable!Makes perfect sense to me! Do you have a four legged family member? Have a listen! As a society, we are finally at a place where we recognize that mental health is equally as important as physical health. And thankfully, we have folks out there that are able to help us. Today we speak with Allison Scarinzi who is the owner of Lotus Psychotherapy and The Refuge; along with Chelsea Tarleton and Michelle Case. We take a dive into the stigmas surrounding mental health, the various treatments available, and some of the signs that a friend or loved one may be struggling. We snuggled up on the couch with Gus (an amazing Golden Retriever) and got into the weeds of individual and group therapies.. Lotus Psychotherapy and The Refuge have a team of people to address virtually all aspects of mental health and to help you deal with it. We all suffer to some degree and it is foolish to ignore it. Welcome back to the BH Sales Kennel Kelp Holistic Healing Hour and YouTube Channel@billholt8792 Today, I wanted to take a moment to clarify and discuss the nature of our online forums. As many of you know, these spaces are designed to foster community, share information, and support each other on our holistic healing journeys. It's important to understand that our forums are not open marketplaces for direct advertising or the display of goods. While we deeply value and appreciate the presence of business proprietors from around the world, and I personally welcome them on this podcast to share their expertise, the forums themselves maintain a focus on community interaction rather than commercial promotion. This distinction is crucial for maintaining the integrity of our community and ensuring that the primary purpose remains the exchange of knowledge and support. We believe that by creating a space free from overt advertising, we can cultivate a more authentic and meaningful experience for all members. However, I recognize the importance of connecting our community with valuable resources. That's why I'm dedicated to featuring business owners and experts on this podcast. Here, we can explore their offerings in a conversational and informative way, allowing you to learn more about the products and services that may benefit your holistic journey. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in upholding these guidelines. I hate to break it to you, but we all are getting older. And many of us have older parents and loved ones as well. Today, we speak with Art Dandridge who is the owner of Interim Healthcare - Annapolis headquartered right on Bay Ridge Avenue. We cover a lot of ground about aging in place-from the obvious benefits to the level of care they can provide. We learned that Interim Healthcare can handle a rehab assignment just as easily as they can a 24-7 situation. Maybe you just need a periodic well-check and organizational visit for mom or dad--Interim Healthcare can handle that as well. It is a real peace of mind for a child that may not be local. All of this is handled by a small army of CNAs and GNAs (employees, not contractors) who are overseen by a team of four RNs. And while honest, respectful, and competent care are the hallmarks of Interim Healthcare, they are quickly followed by effective communications. But enough of this... Have a listen! Tucked away in a small business park near the Annapolis Bowl, is an oasis of sorts. There arae plenty of buds, flowers, and greenery at Thrive Dispensary. Alex Swartz is the Retail Director for the business that also has a location in Upper Marlboro, and he gave me a tour and a lesson all about weed in 2025. First off, to dispell any false narratives, dispensaries today are run much more professionally and securely than most other busiensses--mostly due to regulation. But today, I learned about the experience of the budtenders, the different afflictions that cannabis can help, the differences between recreational and medical, and a whole lot more. Have a listen! Spring has sprung (or so it seems), and it is time to dust off the bike and hit the trails! What? No bike? Well, we have the answer today as we talk to Ernest Freeland, the owner of Crofton Bike Doctor! Ernest was one of the original employees at the original Bike Doctor and loved it so much he ended up buying a location in Crofton 22 years ago and never looked back. Anne Arundel County is rich with opportunities to bike with the B&A Trail seemingly the backbone of a growing network. And there are roads and trails for riders of all skills. At Crofton Bike Doctor, they have bikes to match each of those riders. From kids bikes (with a cool trade-in program because kids grow), to road bikes, to e-bikes, and even racing bikes. But what sets them apart is the level of service and attention. As Ernest said, they want to be with you on your biking journey no matter where you are. If you have not been on a bike in a while (like I was), give it a shot! But first... Have a listen! Bad gun owners are a problem. Good gun owners aren't. Today, we speak with Brian Johnson at Silverback Firearms and Defensive Training about what makes a good gun owner. Having trained nearly 4,000 people on the responsible use of guns and how to effectively protect yourself, he knows what he is talking about. We touch base on the many aspects of responsible gun ownership, from training at Silverback to obtaining a carry permit to buying a gun and registering it. If you have ever wondered who applies for a carry permit in Maryland, we discuss that along with the ins and outs of the training Brian and his team will provide. According to Brian, the most important thing in responsible gun ownership is humility. As he said, if you are in a situation where someone starts jawing off at you--just leave. But also if you are in a situation where you are in danger, your firearm can save you. It was a fascinating conversation for me since I am not a fan of guns! Have a listen! Today's Local Business Spotlight will be filed under the "Who knew?" section. Homaltro may not be a household name unless you are a member of the first responder world, but their North American headquarters are based right here in Anne Arundel County! And for those NOT in the first responder world, listen up as we speak with Shelly Elliott, the president of the company that may save your life someday! Homaltro makes hydraulic rescue tools. You've seen them tearing apart cars to get to a crash victim. But they are a lot more than that. In addition to the "standard" rescue tools, they manufacture tools for police officers to open doors without placing themselves in danger, air bags to lift portions of a collapsed building, jacks and rams to lift heavy loads, and a few others as well. They serve fire departments, police departments, the military, and Indy car racing. The tools are researched, designed, manufactured, tested, and shipped from their headquarters, which takes raw steel and produces lifesaving tools. Generally, the tools are sold through a distributor network, but the headquarters offers training, and repairs. I hope you never need to see the tools in action, but if you do, this podcast will assure you that you are in good hands. Have a listen! For a healthy (and sometimes not) way to pick you up, there's a store at the Harbour Center going strong after 20 years--Robeks! Today, we head over to speak with Dawn and Chuck Jeffries who took a leap of faith 20 years ago to start only the second location of Robeks in Maryland! Despite a challenging start and of course the problems surrounding the pandemic, they not only survived but thrived. The secret sauce? The community and word of mouth! Today, we cover a lot of ground from the first five years to the benefits of a franchise, to the increase in the competition, and exactly why Robeks continues to thrive in Annapolis. But as for the menu, it goes well beyond smoothies and fresh juices, Robeks offers great toasts (avocado is the fave), acai bowls, and wellness shots to get you through your day. So, the next time you are out for a movie, stop next door and get a great-tasting and healthy (maybe) smoothie or bowl! Have a listen! LINKS: Robeks Annapolis (Website) Robeks Annapolis (Facebook)

Time and convenience! We all want more time, and anything that makes life more convenient is a win. Admiral Cleanerssells both! And you thought they were just a dry cleaner! Today, we speak with Whitney Kerridge, the third-generation owner of this 93-year-old local business. We discuss its origins, challenges, and changes she has seen in her tenure and what they are doing to thrive in the community. Did you know they cleaned and distributed 5,000 coats this winter? Did you know they have a wash-and-fold service and deliver all over the area and the Eastern Shore? It's rare to find a company that is nearly 100 years old, and this conversation was fascinating! Dr. Britney Ometz established her practice in 2024 to help people with hearing issues. And her passion began back in high school! There's a little production studio tucked in a building off of Chinquapin Round Road in Annapolis called Riggo Productions. Some days, you might find them creating content for Homestead Gardens, maybe Jos. A. Banks, Blades of Green, or the Annapolis Film Festival. Other times, they might be with Madison Rising, Chic-Fil-A, the Blue Angels, or in the Saudi desert, making training films for the Army. That's just a taste of what they can do and the respect this small Annapolis firm has earned. We sit down with Torrey Pocock to learn more and to find out why every business really should have some video presence (guilty as charged for not having one) in today's world. We learn about the golden nuggets that lay on the cutting room floor and how valuable they are, and we hear what thumb-stopping entails! Curious? Have a listen! You know when you go out on the town and disocver a great band? Thank a musician. Annapolis has a very robust music scene and the talent in our musicians runs deep. The only problem is that it's a tough way to make a living! Enter the Annapolis Musicians Fund For Musicians, or AMFM (much easier). Today, we chat with PJ Thomas who is the President of this fantastic non-profit! With anything in life, $#!% happens and musicians are not exempt. Gigs get canceled, fingers get broken, and all of a sudden making ends meet becomes very difficult. AMFM has a fund for them to help bridge the gap. If there is a death, there is a fund to lend a hand. Or if there's a pandemic (as if) and all the venues shut down--there's a fund for that. AMFM is ingrained into the music community and they don't stop with musicians. They award scholarships to students looking to study music in college. They award grants to non-profits who have a music component to their program. And they put on shows! Perhaps the most well-known is the Annual AMFM Christmas Show, followed by the quartely "In the Vane of" shows. AMFM leaves their mark on nearly every aspect of the music scene, and PJ tells it best! When you bring a retired librarian and a retired principal from Tyler Heights Elementary together, you end up with a passionate force to be reckoned with! (Sorry about ending that sentence with a preposition--just deal with it.) Paula Hendry and Tina McKnight head the local affiliate of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library! Less than 50% of students entering the Anne Arundel County School system are reading at grade level. And for less than $100, the Imagination Library will send an age-appropriate book to a child from birth to age 4 every month to foster a love for reading. At the end of the program, the child will have amassed a library of their very own with 60 beloved books! Currently, they serve about 3,700 children in Anne Arundel County; but the need is closer to 30,000. If that number seems staggering to you, please give this LBS a listen--there are many more staggering statistics! Can you help a child succeed in life? Please consider a donation! But first...
