On this edition of Parallax Views, the Left Business Observer's Doug Henwood, host of the influential radio program Behind the News, returns to the program to discuss Trump's tariffs, Bidenomics vs. Trumponomics, the legacy of the anti-WTO/anti-globalization protests of the late 1990s, and much more! Literally a half hour before Doug and I began recording Trump announced a 90-day pause on some of his tariffs. We'll be discussing what Doug sees as Trump's nostalgia about a romanticized 1950s America and how he believes that is driving Trump's policies in many ways. Doug talks about what he sees as the nonsensical nature of Trump's tariffs and how stocks shot up immediately after Trump announced the 90-day pause. Although sometimes there's more noise than signal when looking at the stock market, in this case the response of the stock market over the past week has reflected very real economic anxieties. He also notes that the bond market has been reacting strangely in the past week in a way that is worrying. Doug notes that we'll likely see prices increase in May and June and discusses the effect these tariffs will have on those at the bottom of the income distribution. All of this will factor into Doug's analysis of why he thinks Trump has announced a 90-day pause on some tariffs. We'll also discuss in-depth the pros and cons of Bidenomics and then look at that in comparison to Trumponomics. We'll discuss industrial policy, ways of bringing back manufacturing to the U.S. in a productive rather than destructive manner, and we'll look at the effect of tariffs on poorer countries like Vietnam or Cambodia. We'll also discuss how there's been a wide backlash against Trump's tariffs from across the political spectrum including libertarians like Thomas Sowell, CNBC's Jim Cramer, and even some protectionists. Doug Henwood sums up the backlash as being driven ultimately by the crudeness of the tariff policy. The conversation will also delve into Trump's romanticism about the 19th century U.S. economy, the legacy of the anti-WTO/anti-globalization protests of the late 90s, the potential of a pro-trade internationalism that isn't neoliberal and is informed by socialist or left-wing concerns, the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, the Biden team's failure to tout the positive aspects of Bidenomics, Trump's anti-libertarian streak, DOGE, the misanthropy of the Silicon Valley right-wing, comparing and contrasting the Ralph Nader and Donald Trump views on foreign trade, and much, much more!

Nach der erneuten Wahl Donald Trumps ist klar, dass die Ära der ‚Bidenomics‘ nun endet – was konnte Joe Biden also in vier Jahren umsetzen? We open the show with what appeared to be egg on the faces of both AG Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel. Fox Legal Analyst Greg Jarrett says the SDNY FBI office opened themselves up for both investigation and possible criminality. And, I think that was the plan all along. I've said many times, when problems arise on the Left, if it goes to the FBI, it will likely be swept under the rug. Where are we with the Butler, PA assassination attempt? Federal employees continue to fill the news cycle with their wails of harassment over an email. So, I quote a private sector trucker on X who goes by American Trucker. He puts it into perspective. I am back to wanting Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) to be the permanent spokesperson for the DNC. Her rant on the value of X and of Elon Musk is nothing short of brilliant buffoonery. Yesterday, in the Oval Office, VP JD Vance was asked a question about his “free speech” speech last week in Germany. Visiting PM Kier Starmer said he was proud of the UK's stance on free speech. So, I bring you the arrest of a British citizen for sharing something that “caused another anxiety.” And, that's not the worst part of it. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is looking to pull funding out of NATO. Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) has an observation on the people yelling at Elon Musk and DOGE. Former Biden aide Michael LaRosa now says everyone knew Biden was cognitively impaired and knowingly hid it. And, Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent said, while he is a deficit hawk, there is so much broken, they need a slower draw down to fix what Bidenomics wrecked. We close with the “heated” exchange that took place today in the Oval office with the temper-tantrum throwing President Zelenskyy. While Trump was upbeat and happy about signing off on the rare minerals deal, Zelenskyy had other plans. In front of the media, he continued to challenge the US, demanding more and more, acting entitled to whatever he wanted while not committing to the minerals deal. That is what led up to the exchange and Trump admitted he allowed it to go on for over 5 minutes to show the world what we are dealing with in Zelenskyy. The Left will, of course, be all-in for Ukraine, but our Commander-in-Chief put the United States first and showed the world we are not going to be bullied by anyone.

From record-low unemployment to strong GDP growth, the Biden administration presided over what appeared to be a strong economic recovery in the aftermath of the pandemic. But these measures masked a more complex reality, argues Jason Furman in a new essay in Foreign Affairs. That reality, in his view, should reshape debates about economic strategies going forward. Furman, now Aetna Professor of the Practice of Economic Policy at Harvard University, chaired the White House Council of Economic Advisers under President Barack Obama. He traces a stark disconnect between Biden's lofty goals and real economic performance, especially as it shaped voters' lived experience. That disconnect opened the way for Donald Trump's return to the White House.  Editor Dan Kurtz-Phelan spoke with Furman about why the Biden administration's economic policy fell short—and why both Democrats and Republicans should abandon what he calls their “post-neoliberal delusion.” You can find sources, transcripts, and more episodes of The Foreign Affairs Interview at https://www.foreignaffairs.com/podcasts/foreign-affairs-interview.

Democrat Joseph R. Biden's very long political career is now over. The man first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972 reached the pinnacle of power at 78 years old when he defeated Republican Donald Trump in 2020. Biden made saving democracy against the Trump threat a leitmotif of his administration. Yet, Biden's missteps -- none worse than his decision to seek a second term -- were largely responsible for Trump's return to power. What will endure from Biden's vision? From his legislative accomplishments or foreign policy decision-making? In this episode, historian Jeremi Suri begins to assess the former president's single term in the White House.

[SEGMENT 1-1] Christmas songs repeat 2023    [SEGMENT 1-2] Learn to enjoy Christmas   It's Christmas Day and I hope you are enjoying life with friends and family. And if you happen to be alone, then thank you for including me in your Christmas, and know that I am with you in spirit. When I was an engineer, I had a friend who hated the holidays, especially Christmas. I thought he was kidding, but each year he got very depressed at this time. It was so difficult for me to understand this, because I'm a “cup half filled” person. What was so intriguing to me is that any other time of year, this guy was just like me. He was truly the Merry Mexican. One of the technicians on my engineering team, and the guy was a joy to be around…except during the holidays. In a way I get it. The most wonderful time of the year for God-loving people is almost approached with trepidation. It's the time of year to keep your mouth shut. Yes, we've spent all year fighting the lunatic Left, and now we're supposed to gather around the dinner table, smiling politely as Aunt Karen waxes poetic about “how presidential” Gavin Newsom looks in a windbreaker. The Unbearable Expectations of Christmas Christmas is supposed to be festive, but for many, it's a pressure cooker of unrealistic expectations. Let's start with the car commercials. Who are these people getting luxury cars with big red bows? I swear, I've never met anyone who's walked outside on Christmas morning and found a shiny new Lexus in the driveway. Not one. This isn't a gift—it's a financial ambush. “Merry Christmas, honey! Here's a monthly car payment the size of our mortgage.” Also, can we talk about the fact that Hollywood now feels obligated to diversify these commercials? Oh, look, it's Jamal and Shanice, living their best lives in matching sweaters, unwrapping a BMW. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but let's not pretend this is a universal experience. For most of us, the biggest thing we're unwrapping is the family pack of socks from Costco. New Year's Resolutions: The Annual Lie And then there's New Year's. We treat it like a fresh start, even though it's literally just the day after December 31. “This year, I'm going to the gym!” Sure, you are, Karen. Right after you finish the leftover pecan pie and delete Netflix. Why do we lie to ourselves like this? The same people who couldn't manage to walk their dog more than twice in 2023 are now planning to train for a marathon. Stop it. Holidays with the Left But let's get to the real Christmas buzzkill: Leftists. From Thanksgiving onward, we Conservatives are given a strict set of holiday rules. Don't wear your MAGA hat to dinner. Don't mention Trump. Don't bring up Biden unless you're praising his “resilience.” It's like the PC police have infiltrated our homes, ready to pounce if you so much as hum “God Bless America.” Even in victory—and Trump's 2024 win was a victory for America, the world, and maybe even Mars—we're told to tone it down. “Don't gloat,” they say. Meanwhile, they've spent four years calling us racists, fascists, and worse. Well, guess what, Aunt Karen? This Christmas, I'm drinking eggnog from my TKJN Trump Nickname mug and flaunting my Trumpiness like a MAGA elf at the North Pole. Why Conservatives Need Christmas Here's the thing: We Conservatives need Christmas. It's our time to recharge, to celebrate faith, family, and freedom. While the Left spends the season trying to cancel Rudolph for being “problematic” (too red, obviously Republican), we're out here keeping the traditions alive. Caroling? Check. Nativity scenes? Double check. Loudly pointing out that Jesus was not a socialist? Triple check. And let's not forget, Christmas is the ultimate reminder that good triumphs over evil. It's like a Hallmark movie on steroids. The world needed a savior, and boom, Jesus arrived. And in the spirit of that divine intervention, let's celebrate another miracle: Trump saved us from Bidenomics, open borders, and the Ministry of Truth. You better believe that's worth a toast. Dealing with the Lunatics   Potential Funny AdditionsA fake Christmas letter from the DNC: “Dear Conservatives, Please don't celebrate too loudly. It's making us look bad.”A MAGA-themed Christmas song parody: “It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Freedom.”A holiday card: “All I want for Christmas is four more years!”    I hope today you have on your Trump MAGA hat, drink from your TKJN Trump Nickname mug, and flaunt your “Trumpiness” like Trumpian elves.      [SEGMENT 1-3] Christmas toys repeat 2023      [SEGMENT 1-4] Government trophy girlfriend   I was thinking about this, and I've said many times that it's the rough patches in life that teach you lessons. You learn little from the good times. That's why so many billionaires' kids end up in rehab. And plastic surgeons feast on the insecurities of their wives. Money can't buy you everything, but it does keep the kids close. Government is like that billionaire's kid. It's gotten so much without doing anything that now it expects it. And no matter how badly government behaves or performs, it wants what it wants.  Trauma and Government Incompetence: A Match Made in Dysfunction And trauma also unites us, which is why we revolted against our government in the last election. We finally dealt with the trauma. Similarly, government incompetence echoes life's trauma—it unites us in shared disbelief. And much like those trauma support groups, we form bonds over mutual suffering:DMV Survivors Anonymous.Post Office PTSD Support.TSA Group Therapy: “Hi, my name is Kevin, and I was randomly selected for a cavity search.”The People Who Really Show Up Government is that chic we met at the bar who was HOT. She met us at our financial best, not when we were trying to make it. So we took our arm-candy all over the world, galivanting. And when we went to Thailand for her plastic surgery, she denied the bag with the coke in it was hers, and we had to do her time in that Thai prison. She headed straight to the yacht in Monaco to meet up with some dude she met at the airport while you were detained. Who did you call to get you out. That fat girl you ghosted in college after that one night you pretend didn't happen. And that girl jumped on a plane to Thailand to get you an attorney with her life savings. Refusing to return to America until you are free, she's now working as a stripper to pay off guards in the Thai prison to keep you from being violated. Meanwhile, your trophy girlfriend, aka the government, doesn't even remember your name. The Hilariously Dysfunctional Government Wish List I've been thinking a lot about what government should actually be doing for us. Instead of wasting money on things like gender-neutral snowplows or building sandcastles for crabs in Martha's Vineyard, why not tackle the real issues? You know, stuff that would actually make life better—or at least less absurd. The Government and Cancer: We Know You Have the Cure Let's start with the big one: curing cancer. We've mapped the human genome, people. We've sent robots to Mars, created ChatGPT, and even taught a few people on TikTok how to read. But you're telling me we still can't cure cancer? Please. I know the cure exists, probably stored in a climate-controlled lab in Beijing next to Hunter Biden's misplaced laptop. Only the richest people in the world get access to it, while the rest of us are out here doing 5Ks in pink tutus, hoping our donation covers a box of Band-Aids for a research center. And diabetes? Oh, that's cured too. But apparently, it's reserved for Silicon Valley execs who are on a raw avocado and crypto diet. Meanwhile, the rest of us are stuck playing Russian roulette with insulin prices.Real Science We Need Forget sending billionaires to space or making vegan leather from mushrooms. How about some practical science for regular folks? The Eyebrow That Won't Quit: I have this one eyebrow hair that grows faster than my afro did in the ‘70s. Can someone in a lab coat take five minutes away from studying the mating habits of fire ants to fix this?Butt Hair Be Gone: Why do we have hair growing in places nobody wants it? Between the ears, the nose, and—let's just say it—the nether regions, I'm starting to think nature is just trolling us. And while we're at it, does my nose hair have to turn gray? Nothing screams “distinguished gentleman” like a silvery vine hanging out of your nostril.Anti-Sweat Technology: Forget curing male-pattern baldness. I'd rather have a government-funded lotion that stops my pits from looking like Niagara Falls every summer. Priorities, people.Free Wi-Fi and No Toll Roads: Is That Too Much to Ask? Here's another idea: free Wi-Fi everywhere. If we can find funding for shrimp on treadmills (true story—Google it), then we can surely give Americans free internet access. You know, so we can stream cat videos in peace without selling our souls to Comcast. And toll roads? Enough already. We've paid for these roads ten times over. What are they paving these highways with, Gucci loafers? If the government insists on charging us to drive on roads we already own, the least they could do is throw in a free car wash or a pack of gum.Government Waste: You Can't Make This Up The real comedy gold lies in what the government is spending our money on. Some of this stuff sounds like rejected plotlines from “Veep.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-kevin-jackson-show--2896352/support.

Spending Bill Fails, but GOP Vows To Cut Waste

(AURN News) — A clean spending bill failed to pass the House Thursday night following intervention from President-elect Donald Trump. The original funding bill was 1,500 pages long and, after Trump's involvement in cutting waste, is down to 116 pages. "This is Washington. This is how the lawmaking is done. It's a long process," Johnson said. "Sometimes it takes a while to reach consensus." Johnson also anticipates a major shift when it comes to government spending when he says Republicans will have greater control. "Republicans will have control of the White House and the Senate and the House, and we'll be able to make the key decisions about funding for the 2025 fiscal year," Johnson said. The bill includes $100 billion for hurricane relief and $10 billion in emergency aid for struggling farmers and ranchers. Johnson attributed agricultural difficulties to "Bidenomics and inflation, the high cost of inputs and fertilizer and seed." A key provision in the new bill extends the debt ceiling to Jan. 30, 2027. Trump, weighing in on Truth Social, pushed for an even longer extension: "Congress must get rid of, or extend out to, perhaps, 2029, the ridiculous Debt Ceiling. Without this, we should never make a deal. Remember, the pressure is on whoever is President." The new proposal marks a departure from the initial spending bill, which had included a controversial congressional pay raise before Trump became involved in negotiations. The new bill also extended the debt limit to Jan. 20, 2027. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This conversation is different—a proper "post-mortem" of the results and a bit of a group therapy, mixed with wide-ranging reflections on what it all says about the state of Democratic Party, the country, and perhaps even our souls. Topics include: a (long) list of all the reasons that might account for Harris's defeat, the deranged attempt to keep Biden as the nominee despite his obvious decline, the Democrats' decades-long defensiveness on "cultural issues," why Trump's felony convictions didn't seem to hurt his campaign, the lost promise of 2020 and a politics of care and solidarity, the debate over "Bidenomics," and much more! One small note: we mention the controversy over Harris not appearing on Joe Rogan's podcast, and after we recorded further reporting came out on the decision. Rather than re-recording that section or deleting it altogether, we thought we'd keep it in, with listeners determining for themselves what explanation makes the most sense.Sources:Zack Beauchamp, "The Global Trend that Pushed Donald Trump to Victory," Vox, Nov 6, 2024Shane Goldmacher, Maggie Haberman, and Jonathan Swan, "How Trump Won, and How Harris Lost," New York Times, Nov 7, 2024Matthew Sitman, "The Morning After," Liberties, Nov 7, 2024Gabe Winant, "Exit Right," Dissent, Nov 8, 2024Tim Barker, "Dealignment," Sidecar, Nov 11, 2024Sam Adler-Bell, "Can Liberalism Stop Being So Darn...Liberal?" This election will come down to the border and the economy, but the Democrats continue to lie about Trump's positions. Trump is running to make America great again. He emphasizes the importance of voting early and outlines his vision for America's future, focusing on energy independence and border security. Also, Donald Trump never made a threat to shoot Liz Cheney but she is and always has been a drama queen, and now the media and the White House are uniting behind her to spread another Trump lie. Kamala Harris is a pathological liar and endangers all of us with an open border and support for radical groups like Black Lives Matter. This is the last Friday before the biggest election of our lifetimes and the most important since the Civil War. Later, The private sector shrank and government jobs grew in October, which is exactly how Marxists like Biden and Kamala want it. The cumulative effect of the Biden/Harris economy is higher expenses while our wages stay the same or go down, and we cannot survive 4 more years of Bidenomics. Finally, Mark is joined by Loudoun County, VA, Sherriff Mike Chapman, to discuss recent attacks by MS-13 members and the danger Americans face as a result of the Biden/Harris border and immigration policies. Four regional trade organizations (RTO), as they're called, recently filed an amicus brief, also known as a friend of the court brief, in support of a multi-state lawsuit against the EPA over the rule. The EPA released the rules in April. They require coal-fired power plants that will be operating past 2039 to begin implementing carbon-capture technologies in just eight years. New gas-fired power plants will also need to add the technologies, with those operating 40% of their annual capacity or more to add carbon capture starting in 2032. Isaac Orr and Mitch Rolling, co-founder and researchers with Always On Energy Research, performed an analysis on behalf of the North Dakota Transmission Authority on the impacts the rules would have on the Midcontinent Independent Systems Operator (MISO), an RTO that covers a swath of the center of the U.S. The researchers say they found a number of problems. The EPA grossly overestimated the ability of intermittent wind and solar to deliver reliable electricity during peak demand periods, according to the analysis, and it also found the agency didn't perform any reliability analysis on the rules. The result would be blackouts lasting days in some cases. “So they don't say things out in the open, that maybe they should,” Rolling said. The 2019 blackouts in California, the deadly Texas blackouts in the 2021 Winter Storm Uri, and the Christmas 2022 blackouts in the Southeast, Rolling said, should have been a wakeup call for the country that there are growing risks to our electricity grid. So far, they haven't deterred the net-zero by 2050 advocates from their agenda. Source: justhenews.com Kamala releases economic 'plan' that copies Bidenomics point by point   Vice President Kamala Harris released an 82-page document explaining her vision for the economy on Wednesday, but the plan shares much in common with President Joe Biden's economic agenda. The plan, titled "A New Way Forward For The Middle Class," proposes to build upon Biden initiatives like student loan debt cancellation, industrial policy, huge subsidies for green energy and going after corporations for alleged price gouging. Prior to quitting the presidential race under immense political pressure, voters were largely dissatisfied with Biden's economy, which had come to be defined by 40-year high inflation. "Harris isn't going to stray very far from current Biden policies,"  Harris aims to "[make] corporations and the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share in...
