His life journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, marked by a remarkable career in the U.S. Navy and a passion for promoting his own health and wellness through the concept of “Alkalinity”. In 1959, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and demonstrated exceptional dedication and skill, achieving the prestigious rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) and Chief Warrant Officer within 10 years. During this period, he collaborated with over 700 authors, contributing significantly to the literary landscape. In 1999, Richard became an Associate at the Salt Lake City "Water and Wellness Center," where his journey towards advocating alkaline water and wellness began. In 2007, Richard embarked on a 4-year sabbatical in Missouri, where he immersed himself in learning Dr. Mayr's 100-year-old natural wellness program. His commitment to health took a personal turn in 2009 when he experienced a "Massive Heart Attack." Richard's passion for educating others about the “alkaline” concept saw him conducting live classes from 2011 to 2015, and virtual classes from 2018 to present, spreading up-to-date awareness about the potential benefits of maintaining a balanced body pH level. Continuing his pursuit of knowledge, Richard explored works like “The Acid Alkaline Food Guide” by Dr Susan E. He is currently dedicated to the "Heart Attack Prevention" business, resolute in his mission to save lives and prevent heart-related health issues. With his first book set to be released in 2025, Richard's influence is poised to grow even further. His journey will culminate in a possible TEDx talk and a promising professional speaking career. This episode will leave you both inspired and reflective. In This Episode You Will Hear: • The biggest cause of an air refueling incident is the grohe – it's a big hose – you are actually only 19' from rotors to tanker. (26:26) • [During air refueling] You're doing 110-120mph over the water. (27:00) • I've done air refueling as low as 100' off the coast of Iraq. (27:08) • I get a missile fired at me so now I drop down between buildings. I'm down on the rooftops and you know what's in front of me? Kites. Hundreds and hundreds of kites. (34:10) • The older [Chinook helicopter] Delta models just had handheld maps. (43:34) • [During Operation Red Wings] I sat down with the A10's and the AC130's with my map and the imagery and said “I need you to either suppress or creative a diversion that's so big no one could help but look. (50:15) • Crew Chiefs sometimes see things that aren't there (and I hate to say it that way) but sometimes they'll see lights of a car and think they're seeing signal light signals. (53:28) • Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. (55:00) • My youngest son was a Night Stalker Flight Engineer, and my oldest son is a Navy F18 wizzo (back seater) He's a Goose. (58:05) • I did 17 years with the Night Stalkers, plus about 10 years of deployment. (59:03) • Every aircraft munition has a probable kill ratio. A surface to air missile has a “PK” of 75%, meaning that if they fired at you, you have a 75% chance of killing you. The ground has a 100% PK. (64:23) • I've got about 3,500, maybe 4,000 hours of night vision time, which is a lot. (67:51) • Anaconda was a conventional operation, such as Red Wings. There's no soft component to it. (68:57) • We had 4 or 5 people on the aircraft tail, and we are diving at about 150, [one of our men that fell out but is tethered] while they're shooting at us and his toes are tickling the trees. The crew chief is returning fire with an M60 machine gun. He looks over and pulls our guy up, and I learned we had lost Neil [another guy] and decided we've gotta go back. So I turned inbound and climbed back up and the controls stopped moving. Imagine you pulled the keys out of your car. That's what it's like with no hydraulics. So I'm like “Guys… we're done,” as in “We're going to die.” (79:03) • In the spirit of never quit, there's a saying: ”Never quit flying the aircraft.” (83:22) • Everything I do in life, I associate with movies I've seen. Summary In this episode of the Rising Tide Leadership Podcast, host Mo interviews his friend Dave, a retired Chief Warrant Officer from the United States Army. They reminisce about their time in the Army and discuss the role of a Chief Warrant Officer. Dave shares his journey from enlisting in the Army Reserves to becoming a Warrant Officer specializing in food service. He explains the unique position of Warrant Officers as specialists in their chosen fields, advising commanders and keeping them out of trouble. Dave also shares a funny story about a deployment where soldiers were fed nothing but chili dogs for several meals. Overall, the conversation provides insights into the life and responsibilities of a Chief Warrant Officer in the Army. David Morphis shares his experiences working as a logistics officer in Northern Iraq and the challenges of being away from his family during his wife's labor. He emphasizes the importance of finding value in everyone and learning from their experiences. He also discusses the influence of his father and wife in shaping him as a person of influence. David recommends the books '12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos' by Jordan Peterson and 'David Copperfield' by Charles Dickens. He encourages listeners to strive to be better and uplift those around them. Takeaways A Chief Warrant Officer in the Army is to be a specialist in a chosen field and advise commanders. Warrant Officers manage specific areas, such as food service, and ensure the commander's decisions align with regulations and best practices. Army deployments can last for extended periods, with soldiers spending months in a foreign country before returning to the United States. The Army Reserves have a different mobilization process than the active duty Army, with reservists going to a mobilization site before deployment. Deployments can involve challenging and dangerous situations, but soldiers find ways to cope and maintain communication with their families. Humor and camaraderie play a significant role in soldiers' experiences, even in difficult situations like being fed only chili dogs for multiple meals. Find value in everyone and learn from their experiences. The influence of family members, such as fathers and spouses, can shape a person's character. Read books like '12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos' and 'David Copperfield' to gain wisdom and inspiration. Strive to be better and uplift those around you. Sound Bites "An entire training organization of 2,000-3,000 soldiers was fed only chili dogs for about four meals." "It was the best deployment I ever had, mainly because of those four months working with the special forces." "We all have those staples of influence and shifting influences." "You can overcome just about all obstacles. You just have to stick with something." "There's a lot of wisdom in organizing yourself before you try to organize others." ------------------------------------ Books Mentioned in the Show 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, by Jordan Peterson David Copperfield, by Charles Dickens ------------------------------------------ Special Thanks To: Work it out by LiQWYD https://soundcloud.com/liqwyd Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/l_work-it-out Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/erSmdVocHO0

It's Monday night at the National Guard Armory in northeast Minneapolis, which means it's time for Hmong Cornhole. A few dozen folks throw little bean bags into holes in rows of glossy wooden boards. They chat and fist bump and update scores on digital tablets. Kids occasionally run weaving through the boards, sometimes squirreling away bags from their parents. This definitely has strengthened our community.Dia Lee“Picturing my life without cornhole before this,” Dia Lee says, “I didn't know any of these people. I didn't know anybody from this club or in this Hmong cornhole community, so this definitely has strengthened our community.”Lee started playing two years ago and is now one of the top players in the state, along with her husband, Houa Xiong. “You always need somewhere to feel like, ‘Oh, this is my house.' Where you're comfortable and where you're used to playing every week,” Houa Xiong says of the Hmong Cornhole club. “I think it's important because you want to belong somewhere.” A handful of cornhole players in the Twin Cities Hmong community — Alan Lee, Kou Xiong, Sue Moua, Ger Vang and Toua Xiong — started the club on Labor Day in 2021. With about 120 players, Hmong Cornhole is now the largest cornhole club in the state. Many of the club members clock at least 15 hours a week playing cornhole. Hmong Cornhole hosts weekly events, fundraisers and raffles, both at the Minneapolis armory, as well as the one in St. Paul near the capitol. Sometimes they play at Unison, a Southeast Asian restaurant in Maplewood. On Memorial Day, they will host a tournament at Kingston Park in Cottage Grove for the 4th annual Hmong Memorial Sports Fest and Street Fair. Another tournament will be June 29-30 at the Hmong International Freedom Festival — what Alan Lee calls the “Hmong Olympics.”“It's crazy how it came to be,” co-founder Toua Xiong says. “We never thought that we would take it this far.”The reach goes beyond Minnesota, too.“It really started off as just a little tiny gathering of individuals that suddenly sparked a nationwide growth in the Hmong community,” says co-founder Alan Lee.Alan Lee says after they founded their club, other Hmong Cornhole groups popped up in Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, Oklahoma, California and the Carolinas — all states with large Hmong populations.“For the community to boom like that in such a short time is phenomenal,” Alan Lee says.Alan Lee says they started a club so the Hmong community could compete on an even playing field as cornhole is a predominantly white sport. “Genetically speaking, we're not as tall, we're not as fast, we're not built,” Alan Lee says.Dia Lee and Houa Xiong say the Hmong community is very competitive. Many Hmong Cornhole players say the sport took off in the Hmong community because it's a mental game first: Success relies on technique, strategy and repetition.Alan Lee says they soon learned that it was already an even playing field.“When we actually started playing, we go, ‘Nah, it's not a race thing, it's not a genetic thing,'” Alan Lee recalls. “Anybody could play, anybody could win in this game. All because you have longer arms, that doesn't make you a better player, all because you're taller, that doesn't make you a better player.”So Hmong Cornhole opened up and welcomed everyone to play, no matter their background. And players from all over the state flocked in, wanting to play with them.“The Hmong community felt empowered by everybody else that has been playing for so long, that all of a sudden it just spread,” Alan Lee says.Jim Bruce, who is not Hmong, is one of the folks who wanted to play with the Hmong Cornhole club. Alan Lee calls him the “OG of Cornhole.” Bruce has been playing for 14 years.“They have raised the bar exponentially for all of us that have been playing for a long time,” Bruce says. “The majority of their high-level players are in the top 5 percent of all the players in Minnesota now.” Bruce says it's been a boon to the community.“I feel like I've known them for years,” Bruce says. ”We just have a common bond of, you know, cornhole.”At the armories, Bruce says there are always kids running around, spouses checking in, and support for community businesses whether through fundraisers or popups. We just have a common bond of, you know, cornhole.Jim BruceAlan Lee says they play at the armories because he's a Chief Warrant Officer 2 with the National Guard, where he's served for 20 years, so he was able to secure the space. Lee was first introduced to cornhole by a roommate in 2007 during his first deployment for Operation Iraqi Freedom.“We played overseas so much that when I got home, I actually went and bought a $40 set from Target,” Alan Lee says.“The Minneapolis armory has a lot of history with the Hmong community as well,” he adds. In the Nineties, he says this was the site where many Hmong Minnesotans, including himself, came to pick up gifts from Toys for Tots. “A lot of the members from Hmong Cornhole really love the fact that this has come full circle of like childhood, hanging out here, now to actually throwing bags here,” he says.At the St. Paul armory on Friday night, May 10, the club is hosting a fundraiser for a member of the local Hmong community, Dani Adele, who is competing for the 2024 Miss Minnesota USA. The vendor Yaoson is selling what they describe as a “Hmong salsa” with whole pickles in it.Dia Lee, who is now one of the club administrators, is throwing bags. Cornhole, she says, has strengthened ties between the Hmong community and greater community, too.“It expands your horizon, definitely,” she says. “I would have never imagined myself going to so many bars or VFWs, or just so many cornhole tournaments that I would have never been to and interacting with so many people and creating new relationships.”Dia Lee encourages everyone to come play with them. “You don't have to be Hmong to be part of our family, we're accepting of everybody,” Dia Lee says.” The Minnesota cornhole community in general — It's a great community.” Hmong Cornhole high speed Correction (May 24, 2024): An earlier version of the story had an incorrect date. The article has been updated.

Joined by an elite covert operations team, Julian heads to New Orleans, searching for the only person capable of taking the cartel head-on: Elle Anderson. Three years ago, on September 5th, Chief Warrant Officer 5 Joseph Rosamond was the pilot in command of a California Air National Guard CH-47 that rescued hundreds of trapped campers in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The campers were cut off and surrounded by wildfires. The actions of CW5 Rosamond, his crew, and a fellow UH-60 Blackhawk crew risked their lives to land and recover 242 individuals in the Mammoth Pools. Despite local, state, and Homeland Security officials advising against them attempting a rescue they pressed forward, knowing they might not return. For their actions, the 7 crew members were awarded Distinguished Flying Crosses. This episode originally aired back in 2020. Stay tuned for a follow-up interview with CW5 Rosamond.
