Send us a textSteve Smith of the Vapors stops by to discuss their latest release, Wasp in the Jar, their upcoming tour, and their longevity career. *****Best known for their massive 1980 worldwide hit “Turning Japanese,” The Vapors continue to bring their individually styled brand of music to fans old and new in the form of high-quality live performances and the ongoing development of critically acclaimed new material. The band, formed in 1979, had already gained a substantial live following around their hometown of Guildford, Surrey and in London, when they were brought to large UK audiences with their support slot on The Jam's iconic 1979 “Setting Sons” tour, by then managed by The Jam's Bruce Foxton and Paul Weller's father John. The release of debut single “Prisoners” in 1979 was followed by 1980's “Turning Japanese “alongside the classic first album New Clear Days. The single reached Number 3 in the UK, Number 1 in Australia, and hit the top 10 in both New Zealand and Canada whilst becoming a mainstream Billboard Top 40 hit in the US. The debut album spawned further hits “News At Ten” and” Waiting for the Weekend” before the very different, but equally well received second album “Magnets” arriving in 1981, providing the singles “Spiders” and further hit “Jimmie Jones”, with the band touring extensively in the UK, US and Australia throughout this period. The band parted company late in 1981, with all members going on to have varied and successful careers across the entertainment industry. In 2016, after a decade of Internet clamour for a revival, they announced their reformation for a short series of gigs, including a sell-out show at London's Dingwalls. Over 170 gigs and 2020's comeback album third album Together and several singles later, they're stronger and more relevant than ever. The band continue to write and perform and have completed two headline tours in the UK since the pandemic, as well as appearing at the Pasadena Rose Bowl's “Cruel World” festival in May 2023, touring the US in 2024 and recording their exciting statement fourth album Wasp In A Jar (to be released on 28th February 2025). They continue to deliver polished shows featuring songs spanning their entire 45-year history. Website: https://www.thevapors.co.uk/Lost 80s Live Tickets: https://lost80slive.com/buy-now/*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. David Plotz has been podcasting for a long time. Twenty years ago, he sat down in a conference room with his colleagues Emily Bazelon and John Dickerson to record the very first episode of Slate's Political Gabfest. Since then, he's gone on to be Slate's editor, the CEO of Atlas Obscura, and now the CEO of City Cast, the nationwide network behind City Cast Denver. Has Denver become a “neglected metropolis”? The entire GOP caucus at the state legislature signed onto a letter to Mayor Mike Johnston this week saying they feel unsafe going to work. But the mayor told a very different story about our not-so-Mile-High crime rates to Congress in his big hearing on immigration on Wednesday. So what's really happening on the ground? One of our favorite regular guests, stand-up comic Joshua Emerson, joins Producer Paul Karolyi and Host Bree Davies to talk about the crime narrative and some big new plans to turn it around. Plus, the allure of the suburbs and our wins and fails of the week.  Paul talked about the recent drama at AJ's Pit BBQ, Rep. Emily Sirota's “junk fees” bill, and the conflicting crime data. Bree mentioned Tyler Campo's memorial. Joshua talked about the Avs' hot streak and the Crosby factor.  We discussed our recent episode with Senadora Julie Gonzales about the mayor's congressional hearing and the last time he talked about his faith and immigration. He also shared this statement with us about how he felt the hearing went:  “I'm incredibly proud of this city and the way we all came together to respond to a crisis with humanity and compassion. Denver showed the world that we can solve hard problems together, and I'm glad we got to tell that story to the members of Congress who actually have the power to fix our broken immigration system.”  Get your tickets to HEYDAY now! Amid last year's national hysteria over Tren de Aragua — the Venezuelan gang that had allegedly “taken over” several apartment buildings in the Denver metro — then-presidential candidate Donald Trump came to Colorado to announce his plans for a massive crackdown on immigration, dubbed “Operation Aurora.” Now that Trump is in office, social media is rife with stories of ICE raids, security breaches, and people being detained — so how can you tell what's fact and what's fiction? Host Bree Davies sits down with Westword staff writer Bennito Kelty, who has been covering the immigration issue in his hometown of Aurora, to discuss the actual impacts of a second Trump presidency and if any of the rumors are true. Bree mentioned Bennito's deep dive on GEO Group, the for-profit prison company running the Aurora ICE facility. She also mentioned Congress's request for Mayor Johnston to come and testify on Denver's sanctuary city policies in February. For more, the Colorado Sun recently reported that Trump's Department of Justice recently ordered several local non-profits to stop their work, which will leave many people in the ICE facility in Aurora and at the immigration courts in Denver without access to legal representation.  We're doing a survey to learn more about our listeners. The National Western Stock Show is a Denver tradition — for 119 years, this event highlighting our livestock and agriculture industry has been bringing farmers, ranchers, and cowfolk from all over the country to the Mile High City each January. But once upon a time, this crucial economic and cultural legacy almost pulled up stakes and left for good. Last year, producer Paul Karolyi and host Bree Davies spoke with some of the key players in that drama about what happened when Denver almost let a beloved piece of living history leave town forever.  How much does the stock show matter to you as a Denverite? Is there an event you never miss? Or a favorite rodeo memory? Or do you wish the stock show left town for good? We want to hear from you! Text or leave us a voicemail with your name and neighborhood, and you might hear it on the show: 720-500-5418‬ Bree mentioned National Western Stock Show CEO Paul Andrews' recent decision to step down after this year's show.  Get your tickets to HEYDAY now! What's the best way to make a change in your community? You could gather signatures and put a question on the ballot, like some animal welfare activists did last year. Or, you could put on a mask, grab a bullhorn, barge into a local restaurant, and demand they stop serving foie gras, a French delicacy made from fattened duck or goose liver. That's exactly the tactic a new group of animal lovers have been trying, and the results are… mixed. Producer Paul Karolyi and Olivia Jewell Love are talking about these so-called “foie gras terrorists,” as well as an under-the-radar zoning change making waves on the west side of town and listener responses to our episode yesterday about Denver rents with Drew Hamrick of the Apartment Association of Metro Denver. Get your tickets to HEYDAY now! We're putting on an indoor fair with urban flair, like a classic county fair but with a very cool Denver twist. Paul quoted this video of Anthony Bourdain on foie gras, this video The Duck Alliance shared with us of their NYE action at Mizuna, and Westword's coverage of the Duck Alliance's previous activities in Denver.  What do you think about the foie gras protests? We want to hear from you! Is foie gras delicious? Should Denver ban it?
