Tanečná scéna, v ktorej sa v detsky hravej choreografii pohráva so zemeguľou patrí k ikonickým scénam v histórii kinematografie. Scéna, ktorá vás rozosmeje a súčasne vás z nej mrazí. V dvojúlohe židovského holiča a diktátora sa Chaplin súčasne lúči s Tulákom. Chaplinov Diktátor je vrámci svetovej kinematografie dodnes neprekonanou politickou satirou. V cykle Fenomény sa o tomto, žiaľ stále aktuálnom, diele rozprávala Mariana Jaremková s filmovým teoretikom Martinom Cielom.

From the days of silent films to adapting to sound, few have been able to do it as well as Charlie Chaplin. Playing the dictator Hynkel and the barber during an alternate style to WW2 shows a hilarious yet horrifying side to war. In standard Chaplin style, there is definitely slapstick comedy but he's able to evolve it with the times to make a memorable story that everyone should check out if nothing else, for the last few minutes of the film. It really shows that it's not easy trying to be emperor of the world.

Dana and Tom welcome back Sarah Duncan for a record-tying 4th time to discuss one of her favorite movie stars, Charlie Chaplin, who wrote, directed, produced, and starred in two roles for The Great Dictator. Plot Summary: After dedicated service in the Great War, a Jewish barber (Charles Chaplin) spends years in an army hospital recovering from his wounds, unaware of the simultaneous rise of fascist dictator Adenoid Hynkel (also Chaplin) and his anti-Semitic policies. When the barber, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Hynkel, returns to his quiet neighborhood, he is stunned by the brutal changes and recklessly joins a beautiful girl (Paulette Goddard), her neighbors, and the disgraced Commander Schultz (Reginald Gardiner) in rebelling. On today’s episode, I am joined by Logan and Brayden from the Absolutely Gobsmacked Podcast who picked Charlie Chaplin’s 1940 satiric triumph, The Great Dictator. Charlie Chaplin is one of the most recognizable, and most important comedians of all time. By the late 1930s however, he had still not made the transition to sound causing critics to doubt the comedian’s future. As Nationalism and Fascism were out for all to see with the rise of Italy’s Benito Mussolini and with the similarly mustachioed Adolf Hitler and his Nazi thugs Chaplin chose to be a voice for the voiceless by wielding his comedy and humanist ideals against the world’s evil and intolerant. From his depiction of Hitler’s ridiculous mannerisms and hypocrisy to the now-viral sensation that is often called The Greatest Speech Ever, The Great Dictator was the first and is now the last laugh in face of Adolf Hitler and his current wannabees. The Great Dictator follows the story of a Jewish barber who develops amnesia after a plane crash during the last days of WWI. Over the next twenty years, while the barber is sheltered in a mental hospital, his countrymen turn their eye to evil as they give their beloved country of Tomainia over to the anti-Semitic fascist dictator Adenoid Hynkel who looks exactly like the Jewish barber. After being persecuted by Hynkel and his cronies, our barber soon has his memory restored, begins to rebel, and maybe the only one in the world that can stop Hynkel’s agenda of hate. So sit back, relax, and become a little more absent-minded. Heads up, Proud Buttheads, the 366th Ellises' Analysis is politically polarizing, but we make zero none NO apologies for how we feel. We're starting Funny Movie Month the day before the American election because we all need some laughs after a monumentally terrible year. Charlie Chaplin's mixture of politics and humour isn't a smooth one though. We preferred the farcical Hynkel scenes because what sane person doesn't like seeing Adolf Hitler being brutally mocked? The Tramp scenes...wait, the "Jewish Barber" scenes are necessary for the plot, but they're just in the wrong movie. What an ending with the barber's passionate speech though! It's sappy and so very on the nose, but it's advice everyone needs and they should heed it no matter the decade or the dictator involved. So don't be a phony poseur buffoon in 1940, 2020 or anytime.

We continue with our series of discussing 5 of the most famous and greatest speeches from the movies. Charlie Chaplin was a genius, his speech in this movie still applies today. It was made in 1940! The Great Dictator was Chaplin’s first film with dialogue. Chaplin plays both a little Jewish barber, living in the ghetto, and Hynkel, the dictator ruler of Tomainia. In his autobiography Chaplin quotes himself as having said: “One doesn’t have to be a Jew to be anti Nazi. All one has to be is a normal decent human being.” Chaplin and Hitler were born within a week of one another. “There was something uncanny in the resemblance between the Little Tramp and Adolf Hitler, representing opposite poles of humanity, ” writes Chaplin biographer David Robinson, reproducing an unsigned article from The Spectator dated 21st April 1939: “Providence was in an ironical mood when, it was ordained that Charles Chaplin and Adolf Hitler should make their entry into the world within four days of each other.  Each in his own way has expressed the ideas, sentiments, aspirations of the millions of struggling citizens ground between the upper and the lower millstone of society.  Each has mirrored the same reality – the predicament of the “little man” in modern society.  Each is a distorting mirror, the one for good, the other for untold evil.” Chaplin spent many months drafting and re-writing the speech for the end of the film, a call for peace from the barber who has been mistaken for Hynkel. Many people criticized the speech, and thought it was superfluous to the film. Others found it uplifting. Regrettably Chaplin’s words are as relevant today as they were in 1940. "The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way." CC The following is the end scene from Charlie Chaplin’s 1940 "The Great Dictator" where he was both a little Jewish barber, living in the ghetto, and Hynkel, the dictator ruler of Tomainia. Chaplin himself wrote this impactful speech: I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power: the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite!

In 1940, Charlie Chaplin put aside the Tramp character to write, direct, and star in "The Great Dictator." Rather than his usual slapstick comedy, "The Great Dictator" was a thoughtful political comedy, that not only satirized but also denounced authoritarianism. In the film, the Barber, played by Charlie Chaplin, is mistaken for Hynkel, the great dictator. Hynkel, being an obvious stand-in for Adolf Hitler. Rather than letting this opportunity of mistaken identity slip through his fingers, the Barber addresses a crowd as Hynkel, to explain that he's had a change of heart. And Charlie Chaplin delivers what many consider to be one of the greatest speeches ever to be recorded. Though "The Great Dictator" was a criticism of the Nazis, it rings especially true today. Because in many ways, the Nazis won. Now, I'm not going to go into the typical storyline about racism in America. No, that's too obvious. What everyone ignores is the not-so-obvious, but the one we're constantly immersed in. Like fish, since Nazi efficiency has become like water, we no longer see it. But it makes sense then that World War II was the marriage of Nazi efficiency and Japanese Imperial efficiency. The Nazis and the Japanese didn't win World War II but in many ways, they won the war of work...
