Die Regeringsinstellings Pensioenfonds het die opening van die Goreangab-winkelsentrum van 300 miljoen Namibiese dollar verwelkom en dit beskryf as 'n tasbare uitkoms van sy beleggingstrategie. Die winkelsentrum is ontwikkel deur 'n vennootskap tussen Oryx Properties en Safland Property Group, beide ontvangers van beduidende fonds-gesteunde beleggingsmandate wat daarop gemik is om Namibië se kommersiële eiendomssektor uit te brei en ekonomiese groei te bevorder. Ek was onlangs deel van ʼn span veldwerkers wat met dagloners en straatkosverkopers gesels het. Ons het ook ʼn fotograaf op die span gehad en een van die skote wat hy wou kry is ʼn handvol kleingeld. Groot was ons verbasing dat kontant baie skaars is en die kiosk met kota's langs die groot pad in die nywerheidsgebied verkies dat jy met jou kaart of foon betaal. Dit gaan natuurlik oor die misdaadgevare van omkontant by jou te hê, maar daar is ʼn groter storie.

De opvanghuizen voor mishandelde vrouwen ontstonden in een tijd waarin geweld tegen vrouwen absoluut niet serieus werd genomen, zelfs niet door hulpverleners. The county remains a major producer of avocados, citrus, nursery crops, floriculture products, and specialty crops, supporting thousands of jobs and contributing significantly to the local economy. “The public has this image of farming that's often large industrial-scale farms,” Groot said. “San Diego County, we're family-owned farms, specialty crops, and sell a lot of what we grow here locally.” One of the biggest concerns discussed during the interview was the increasing cost of doing business in California. Groot noted that farmers must compete against imported products that are often grown under very different labor, environmental, and pesticide regulations. “The consequence will certainly be imported foods,” Groot explained, warning that California growers continue to face higher production costs than many foreign competitors. Labor remains another significant challenge. According to Groot, San Diego County growers struggle to attract workers due to high housing costs and long commute distances between urban residential areas and rural farming communities. “The issue in our county is really the available housing tends to be in the more urban locations, and the farms tend to be in the more rural locations,” Groot said. The discussion also highlighted the importance of San Diego County's nursery and floriculture sector. California leads the nation in nursery production, and San Diego County remains the top county in the country for nursery and floriculture products. However, industry consolidation has changed the landscape over the past several decades, leaving fewer independent retailers and more reliance on large chain stores. Groot discussed ongoing efforts to protect citrus production from the Asian citrus psyllid and Huanglongbing disease, while also noting increasing challenges from invasive pests and plant diseases impacting ornamental crops and strawberries. Despite these challenges, San Diego agriculture continues to benefit from one of the most favorable growing climates in the country. The region's mild weather allows growers to produce crops year-round, providing a unique advantage compared to many other agricultural regions. Groot also emphasized the importance of public education and outreach, encouraging consumers and policymakers to learn more about farming and understand the role agriculture plays in food security, economic development, and environmental stewardship. “We all stand a better chance of thriving,” Groot said, “if we all work together.” The interview underscored a common theme heard throughout California agriculture: farmers continue adapting to rising costs, labor shortages, water concerns, and increasing regulations while working to maintain local food production and support rural communities.

The man who helps finance Europe's defence: Robert de Groot, vice president of the European Investment Bank There is a particular kind of power that comes with someone who decides, quietly, which ideas get funded and which don't. Robert de Groot, and his team, holds that power over an extraordinary range of things: military bridges in Poland, rocket launchers in Spain, satellite-to-smartphone startups in Luxembourg, drone intelligence software in Estonia. As Vice President of the world's largest multilateral lender, the EIB sitting on the Kirchberg plateau, his brief covers security, defence, space, and innovation. It is, as he puts it with characteristic understatement, "quite a new direction" for a bank that, not long ago, wouldn't touch defence at all. That has changed. Dramatically. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the EIB has rewritten its mandate, opening five distinct financing pillars across the defence and security ecosystem, from large-scale infrastructure to venture equity for startups building things that didn't exist five years ago. De Groot has spent the last two years touring every European capital, sitting down with defence, finance, and interior ministers, and asking “What does Europe actually need, and can we finance it?” "The urgency I hear in private is far greater than what you see in public." What he found on the road was a continent with a perception gap. The Baltic states are operating in a different psychological reality from much of western Europe. For Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the threat from the east is not geopolitics but geography. However, de Groot is cautiously optimistic. Germany has made a near-complete reversal on defence spending in three years. The Nordics have joined NATO. Ministers of Interior are now showing up to defence finance meetings, because the boundary between military security and civil security has dissolved. Cyber attacks, compromised energy grids, sabotaged undersea cables are happening now. The physical problems, meanwhile, are startlingly concrete. Bridges that cannot carry battle tanks. Ports unable to defend against unmanned underwater vehicles. Roads along NATO transit routes from Antwerp through Germany deep into Poland that haven't been maintained to handle today's military hardware. "It sounds absurd," de Groot says, "until you realise it's a multi-billion euro problem." The financing exists. The fixes are underway. But getting three countries to agree on a shared corridor before one of them goes its own way remains the harder challenge. For innovators and entrepreneurs building the dual-use technologies that now sit at the heart of European defence strategy, de Groot offers a map through the financing ecosystem. Early stage? Venture capital funds backed by the European Investment Fund. Series A and B? Venture debt, a product barely known in Europe five years ago, now scaling fast, with Luxembourg companies OQ Technology and Artec 3D among its beneficiaries. Series C and beyond? The European Tech Champions Initiative, designed explicitly to stop European unicorns from decamping to California. And for defence tech specifically, a new Defence Equity Facility of up to one billion euros: real, patient, European capital, with no American relocation clause attached. "The companies I meet across Europe mostly want to stay. We need to make sure the financing is there when they do." On the day of interview, a loan was signed for the Luxembourg Fire Brigade's logistics infrastructure. Security exists at multiple scales simultaneously, from orbital launch capability to the speed at which a fire engine reaches a crisis. Both matter and both require investment. Both represent the same underlying bet: that Europe, if it chooses to move with enough conviction, is more than capable of defending and financing its own future. De Groot, for his part, seems to believe it. The question, as ever, is whether the institutions can move as fast as the moment requires. The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY!  They take a job from gold lady Ayesha to protect some batteries from a space squid monster, which they do, in exchange for Gamora's sister. But then Rocket immediately steals those same batteries because of course he does. CLASSIC Rocket. This leads to an all-out attack, a crash landing into a ship planet thing that just kind of appears, and the arrival of a mysterious shirtless dad: Ego. Surprise! He's Quill's father.  Ego invites Quill, Gamora, and Drax to his planet, while Rocket and Groot stay behind with Nebula to keep an eye on her. Peter and Ego hash things out. He explains why he wasn't around but says he wants to be the father he always hoped to be now.  Meanwhile, blue whistle boy Yondu is hired to track them down. Things go sideways FAST when Yondu refuses not to give up Quill location. He ends up being imprisoned with Rocket and Groot, but they escape with some wild arrow work. Back on Planet Daddy Issues, Ego reveals he's basically a god who's been planting himself all over the universe (red flag), having kids everywhere (bigger red flag), and murdering them when they don't have powers (biggest red flag).  Oh, and he casually admits he gave Quill's mom a brain tumor. Cool cool cool. Quill snaps, the team reunites, and it becomes a full-on “let's destroy dad” situation. They head to Ego's literal brain at the planet's core, plant a bomb. The bomb goes off, Ego is toast, and Quill loses his powers in the process. But the emotional gut punch? Yondu sacrifices himself to save Quill, proving he was his real dad all along. we cry. You cry. Everyone cries.  the Ravagers show up to give Yondu the send-off he deserved all along. And we get a thousand mid credit scenes and none of them matter.
