Bayern Munich pulled out a nice victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League after a disappointing showing against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga last weekend. While Julian Nagelsmann as done a good job of managing his personnel, the recent lack of precision, efficiency, and synchronicity on offense has some fans mildly concerned. Like always, there is plenty to talk about — including those issues listed above. Let's take a look at what we have on tap for this week's episode: Why coaching is getting more difficult every year (as Thomas Tuchel and Domenico Tedesco found out — and as Jürgen Klopp might soon learn). Also, did we mention there are some unhappy players at Bayern Munich now? The FC Barcelona is going to tell us a lot about where Bayern Munich is at this stage. Matthijs de Ligt and Lucas Hernandez look great together. The midfield conundrum...Leon Goretzka wants to start, but Marcel Sabitzer has been great? What will happen there. Bayern Munich and Harry Kane might really be interested in forging a relationship in 2023. As always, we love your feedback and appreciate all the support! So Bayern Munich open their account in the Champions League with a solid 2-0 win over Inter Milan. Beating one of the strongest teams in Italy at their home ground might be cause for celebration in other cases, but many fans feel this one was a little bit frustrating. At least this puts the team in a solid position before facing FC Barcelona on MD2. Here are our talking points from the game: Why a good result is also a disappointing performance from Bayern Munich. How Julian Nagelsmann decided to set up the team — in a 4-2-3-1, and its merits and disadvantages. Frustration at Kingsley Coman's final ball. How the two flanks felt incredibly imbalanced, with the right flank preferred by both Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Muller. A rare poor performance from Alphonso Davies. Praising Leroy Sane for an excellent performance, and contrasting it against his game vs Union. Why Joshua Kimmich needs to be acknowledged more. The difference between Leon Goretzka and Marcel Sabitzer in midfield and why the German sometimes offers more. Matthijs de Ligt's clumsy but solid defending style. Is Manuel Neuer (gasp) starting to decline? How a lack of goals should worry the Bayern Munich fanbase heading into the next set of games. It's happened again. After an amazing start to the season, Bayern Munich have suffered a second consecutive draw to Union Berlin, putting an end to the perceived invincibility of this side. With Champions League games starting up again, it's a very bad time for Julian Nagelsmann to hit a bump in the road. Here are our talking points from the game: Bayern Munich draw yet again thanks to some staunch defending by Union Berlin. Should that concern us? (Answer: Yes.) Addressing Nagelsmann's choice to have a lack of width on the pitch. Why this Union game result differs greatly from what happened against Gladbach. Sadio Mane's terrible, not-good, very bad game. Is the honeymoon over? The problem with Leroy Sane today. Addressing the rest of the forward line and their issues. Why Julian Nagelsmann needs to bring the unpredictability back to Bayern's attack. Reageren? Mail dedag@radio1.nl

Bayern Munich have been stopped. The juggernaut is slain. All rejoice, the Bundesliga is now free from tyranny. Okay, maybe not. But it is true that Gladbach have not lost to Bayern. And given the kind of performances we've been enjoying lately, that is quite an achievement. Yann Sommer saved 20 shots in what could be the greatest performance by a keeper in the history of the Bundesliga. Here are our talking points from the game: A very short mental breakdown to preface the pod. Why Yann Sommer deserves the credit for this result. A quick recap of what happened in the game. Could Robert Lewandowski have changed this result? Did Nagelsmann subbing on Matthijs de Ligt mean he needs a CF? Why Julian Nagelsmann's tactics cannot be blamed for this result. The referee was horrible. That is all. Why Thomas Muller remains one of the most effective players on the pitch, despite a lack of recent goals/assists. Sadio Mane's constant offsides — why does it keep happening? How a draw against Gladbach allows us to make adjustments for the upcoming Champions League table. Why we can't take too many negatives from this game because of Gladbach are our bogey team. OK, so it wasn't totally a vacation because the main reason we were there was for work, but that “work” involved watching Juventus during its first stop in its 2022 tour of the United States. On this week's episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Our takeaways are back! Why? Because Juventus actually played a game a couple of days ago. Sure, it was a friendly, but it was a game and we like when Juve plays. (Most of the time.) It's over to the breaking news that happened right before we hit record: Paul Pogba has a torn meniscus and it looks like he is going to miss the start of the Serie A season. Where do Juventus go from here knowing that they are potentially looking at the big summer signing in the midfield being out for a couple of months? Is it Adrien Rabiot time again?! Onto things of a more pleasant nature: The BWRAO boys — or at least two of them — went to Las Vegas to cover Juventus' U.S. tour opener against Chivas this past Friday. And while the travel getting home wasn't the best experience, the same can't be said for what happened at Allegiant Stadium. Basically, being credentialed media for a Juve game was cool as hell. Seriously, Sergio got to ask Juan Cuadrado a question! Observations from the Juve-Chivas game, including just what kind of skillset that Ángel Di Maria brings to the table and how Max Allegri may try to take advantage of that. It was a rather short preseason for Bayern Munich having only had the chance to play two friendlies in the United States against DC United and then Manchester City. There was a bit of gap in terms of quality of the opponents, but Julian Nagelsmann was able to use the opportunities to get a good look at some different players in the squad, our new signings, and some different formations. Bayern now has less than a week until the competitive fixtures start with a trip to RB Leipzig for the DFL-Supercup on Saturday. Bayern looked like they were in the mood to score for fun, beating DC United by a scoreline of 6-2 with goals from Sadio Mane, Marcel Sabitzer, Serge Gnabry, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Thomas MUller, but they were unable to find the back of the net against Pep Guardiola's Man City in Green Bay. Gnabry had a goal ruled out for offside, but the replay suggested Joao Cancelo was actually keeping Muller on in the buildup. It's now also expected that Stade Renne's Mathys Tel will become one of Bayern's last signings of this summer window, as it looks like Bayern has agreed upon approximately 30-million Euros to sign the young striker. While he's certainly no Robert Lewandowski, Nagelsmann has said that he does feel the youngster can become a striker that's good for nearly 40 goals in a season once he's had time to develop. In this episode of the Flagship show, Tom and Teddy discuss: Grading Bayern's preseason overall The win over DC United The loss to Manchester City Players that impressed us during the preseason matches Things we didn't like from the two matches Nagelsmann formation choices Predicting how productive of a signing Mathys Tel will be Learn more about your ad choices. Hello Rank Squad! With pre-season firmly in full swing and the transfer merry-go-round showing no signs of stopping, we wanted to take a look at some of the big question marks ahead of the new season getting underway. We start at Manchester United, where the addition of Lisandro Martinez at CB has posed a dilemma - will it be club captain Harry Maguire or Champions League legend Raphael Varane who starts next to their new man? Then we shift to Bayern Munich, who have similar personnel dramas after the addition of Matthijs de Ligt - how does everyone fit in, in Julian Nagelsmann's system? Finally, we turn to Barcelona, whose plethora of attacking riches has just been massively added to with Robert Lewandowski joining their ranks. Xavi's front three in their first league game is anyone's guess for now! Things We Love discusses some of the big names who are said to be on the move but haven't actually secured their new homes yet, and the anticipation of where the big switches will come in August; as well as discussing Paulo Dybala's switch from Juventus to Roma, and the excitement surrounding having a player of Dybala's quality in a system that will actually suit him. Finally, Melon of the Week is awarded to a man struggling to get into his (or his team's) new groove in pre-season so far, and then in the Gibberish Rankings we each pick the three albums we would listen to for the rest of our lives, if we were forced to renounce all others. Juventus' best defender is heading to Bayern Munich, with what's to come and how the club will spend the money they now find themselves with very much a giant question mark. On this week's episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Another blog announcement: With the Las Vegas friendly coming up and BWRAO having a pair of writers covering the game, we have decided to document it on our new Instagram page! Follow us on IG at @BWRAO_SBN. Now, to the main topic of the show: Matthijs de Ligt is heading to Bayern Munich after Juventus agreed to the German giants' offer Sunday night. É fatta, folks. Did Juventus get a good price for de Ligt or did Bayern having no true competition for him over the last couple of weeks hurt things? Now that de Ligt is about to leave, who should take his place? We know the main names by now with Torino center back Gleison Bremer, Villarreal's Pau Torres and Gabriel of Arsenal being the biggest players already linked with Juventus. Seriously, you know there are about to be a bunch of names linked with Juventus over the next couple of days and there's nothing you can do about it. With de Ligt set to leave, does the United States tour become even more important for somebody like Federico Gatti considering he's a player with no Serie A experience? Twitter questions — including who's the biggest “what could have been” transfer at Juventus, if there's anybody worth paying attention on Chivas' roster, who will be the crowd favorite in Las Vegas and trying to predict Juventus' midfield depth chart if there are no more signings this summer. Matthijs de Ligt wants to join Bayern Munich - that point has been clear by the player and his representatives. At this point, Bayern just has to negotiate an appropriate transfer fee with Juventus for the defender, but it is understood that the Serie A club want between 80 and 90 million euros for him. As June turns to July, the Juventus transfer rumor mill is centered around one very large and muscular Dutchman, who is going to command a lot of money wherever he ends up going. On this episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: It's Matthijs de Ligt transfer rumor mayhem! Chelsea want to sign de Ligt. We know this. But how much could Juventus actually get for de Ligt this summer now that it basically seems inevitable that he's leaving? How much hardball should Juventus play knowing that they've got such a valuable asset in de Ligt? Is not selling de Ligt because a suitable offer never arrives really a bad thing? A chat about something that we already know will happen — the Serie A schedule release. What do we like about Juventus' schedule? What do we not like about the schedule? Just how much is the World Cup being in late-November and December absolutely creating an idiotic situation close to the midpoint of the 2022-23 season? Juventus' best defender as well as the club itself will have to make some tough decisions soon, with Chelsea hot on the trail to sign Matthijs de Ligt this summer and an even bigger rebuild potentially in the cards as a result for the Bianconeri's front office. On this week's episode of The Old Lady Speaks, we discuss: The sudden burst of rumors involving Matthijs de Ligt potentially leaving Juventus and heading to the Premier League, with Chelsea being the No. 1 suitor for the 22-year-old Dutchman. Chelsea's first reported offer for de Ligt was ... pretty funny. The benefits and shortfalls of selling de Ligt this summer compared to next summer. Just how much trust we have in Juventus' front office to spend that money wisely whenever they do end up parting company with de Ligt. In the end, do we believe Juventus will sell de Ligt this summer? Looking at Juventus' reported deal for Ángel Di Maria, which at the time of recording was still inching toward the finish line. Looking at Juventus reported pursuit of Nicolo Zaniolo, which looks to be something that is happening no matter what happens with the Di Maria deal. Twitter questions — including would a Christian Pulisic plus €45 million be enough for de Ligt, what the right kind of profile for a backup to Dusan Vlahovic should be, how bad would losing de Ligt be for Juve's already-suffering defense and if Juve has the makings of a really good midfield with Paul Pogba's arrival this summer.
