Episode #306: John Quinley, a Director at Fortify Rights, notes that his initial interest in Myanmar arose during his high school years when he lived in Thailand, and he recounts a humanitarian mission into Shan State deeply impacted him during that time. He has been involved ever since.Quinley describes how before the coup, Fortify Rights led participatory training to build a knowledge of human rights, helping communities document abuses, and making connections with international legal mechanisms like the International Criminal Court (ICC). The 2021 coup shattered the country's tenuous transition to democracy, forcing Fortify Rights to pivot to providing emergency support—helping activists find safehouses, providing grants, and documenting the junta's abuses against peaceful protesters.Quinley speaks about the importance of regulating his own emotions while facing secondary trauma from witnessing and documenting human rights abuses. He emphasizes the need to remain empathetic while staying clinical, striving to support those in Myanmar without being overwhelmed by the suffering he encountered.A central theme of Quinley's message concerns the resilience of Myanmar's people. He highlights efforts by ethnic armed groups and the National Unity Government (NUG) to build an inclusive, democratic future, in contrast to the exclusionary policies of the military regime and even the past administrations of the National League for Democracy. To Quinley, the NUG's unprecedented step of appointing Rohingya representatives signals a shift towards greater inclusivity.Quinley remains hopeful, seeing the courage and determination of Myanmar's youth, the cooperation across ethnic lines, and the rise of local governance structures that operate independently of the junta. As he notes in closing, “The Myanmar people have said, 'We will still build a future, fight for our rights, and create alternative systems to meet our own needs.'”

The abuses started early for Jeanna…she was just a young middle-school aged girl growing up in a blended family after her mother and father divorced, and her mother re-married a woman with sons who were older than Jeanna. She missed her father and tells how missing him led to her longing for acceptance from men. One of her older stepbrothers took an un-natural interest in Jeanna, and started complimenting her, telling her she was beautiful, and paying an inordinate amount of attention to her. But Jeanna's young age and naiveté didn't recognize what was the brother was doing to her, and the grooming process filled that longing she had been experiencing since her father had left. And it wasn't long before the sexual assault started. But, again, Jeanna's awareness of the situation didn't immediately recognize what was going on as being something wrong. So, the assaults continued until the touching made her feel more and more uncomfortable. But bring up the situation to her mother and step-mother didn't really solve the problem; while the sexual assaults from this particular stepbrother stopped, the blaming and shame she received from her mother and stepmother was palpable. Fast forward several years…Jeanna, still feeling the desires of being wanted and important to older boys and men, fell for an older school mate. This relationship evolved over time to become intimate, and eventually Jeanna ended up marrying this older boy who, while at first treated her at least with some respect, later became suspicious, jealous, controlling, and abusive, both emotionally and sexually. As these dynamics progressed, so did her husbands mental illness. Jeanna learned through all of this that leaving these types of abuses can easily become a life-or-death decision, and that timing is everything. Listen to Jeanna's episode and you'll come to an understanding, like I did, of how strong and courageous Jeanna was to finally leave the marriage, take the appropriate steps to safeguard her children, and to better her and her family's situation by going back to school to get her degree and improve her lifestyle. The healing journey continues. And Jeanna continues to help heal others, too! Thank you for being here to listen to Jeanna's story. After you've heard this episode, please do all you can to share this episode with everyone you know. And also, to Start By Believing…because we all know someone whose life has been impacted by rape or sexual assault. Another big favor I would ask is that you rate and subscribe to this podcast. What happened last time you were upset with someone? What upset you? Knowing what upset you is helpful. Usually the thing that most upsets us about others is what upsets us most about ourselves. Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz joins Nick and Goldy to talk about his new book, "The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society.” Stiglitz challenges the orthodox economic theories that have shaped our understanding of capitalism and argues for a new approach called progressive capitalism. Stiglitz also discusses the flaws of neoliberalism, popular misconceptions about freedom, and the widespread benefits of addressing issues like climate change and inequality. He shares insights on the need for a broader set of economic policies that prioritize the well-being of all people, not just the wealthy. Their discussion sheds light on the evolving landscape of economic thought and the hope for a more equitable and sustainable future. Joseph Stiglitz is a Nobel Prize-winning economist and the best-selling author of multiple books on economics. He was also chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Clinton and chief economist of the World Bank. He now teaches at Columbia University and is chief economist of the Roosevelt Institute. His latest book, The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society, delves into the failures of the neoliberal economic model and presents a comprehensive critique of how "free" markets have led to various crises, including financial instability, inequality, and social unrest. Stiglitz has just produced an important new book, "The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society" that explores not just the merits but the urgent need to embrace progressive economics as an alternative to the distortionary, inequality-driving and freedom-limiting consequences of neo-liberalism. Ed Luce of the Financial Times and host David Rothkopf engage in an important, wide-ranging discussion with Stiglitz about his book and its relevance to the current political and economic situation in the United States and worldwide. In his latest book, The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society (W. W. Norton, 2024), Nobel laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz rethinks the nature of freedom and its relationship to capitalism. While many agree that freedom is good and we want more of it, we don't agree about what it is, whose freedom we're talking about, or what outcomes we desire. Stiglitz asks the question: whose freedom are we talking about, and what happens when one person's freedom means a loss of freedom for someone else? Narratives of neoliberalism have been accepted as gospel despite decades of research showing that less regulation and more trust in the 'hidden hand' of free market economics do not produce greater prosperity or freedom for most individuals. Stiglitz examines how unregulated markets reduce economic opportunities for majorities by prioritizing the freedom of corporations and wealthy individuals over that of individuals, resulting in the siphoning wealth from the many to ensure the freedom of the few, from property and intellectual rights to education and opportunity. The Road to Freedom re-evaluates of what constitutes a good society and provides a roadmap to achieve it. Recommended reading: The Groves of Academe by Mary McCarthy Learn more about your ad choices. Human beings have a deep need for fulfillment. It's how God made us. But things go horribly wrong when we seek satisfaction in earthly things. We end up becoming dependent on, maybe even addicted to, things that cannot satisfy us. But if we will seek our fulfillment in God Himself, we'll find that He can do what nothing else can. That's why seeking fulfillment in God is one of the key lessons on the road to freedom.
As long as we are living in this world, we are going to be engaged in a spiritual war. As A.W. Tozer said, this world is not a playground, it is a battleground. But if we will stay close to the captain of our faith, the victorious Jesus, He will give us the strength to win our battles.

Sometimes the goal we set for ourselves does not fully match God's goal for us. Here's a surprising example of this: when we make freedom from sexual sin our highest goal. In today's show, we'll talk about why God's goal for our lives is much deeper and more wonderful than that, and why pursuing His goal for our lives is a “Key Lesson on the Road to Freedom.” Resources we mentioned: Living in Victory Through the Power of Mercy (Book) By Steve Gallagher
