When we think of grief, we often think of death. But grief can take many forms, whether it's the end of a relationship, a change in health, or simply realizing life doesn't look the way we hoped. Yet most of us were never taught how to navigate it.Instead, we're left feeling overwhelmed, broken, and pressured to “move on.” The truth is, grief is part of being human. It touches our minds, bodies, and spirits, and it doesn't follow tidy stages or timelines. Without understanding this, we risk judging ourselves and suffering more than we need to.In this episode, master certified life coach Krista St. Germain shares how the sudden loss of her husband transformed her understanding of grief. Together, we explore why grief isn't one-size-fits-all and the practical tools that can help you ride the waves when it feels unbearable. You'll walk away with permission to grieve in your own way, strategies to support yourself and others, and a reminder that even in loss, healing and growth are possible.Connect with KristaThe Widowed Mom PodcastWebsiteWork with KristaInstagramGet Your FREE 3-Day Hunger Hormone Reset Mini Video SeriesAudio Stamps01:18 - Today's guest, Krista St. Germain, shares how losing her husband in a tragic roadside accident led her to become a master certified grief coach.04:55 - Why grief affects your entire body—hormones, sleep, heart health—not just emotions.09:10 - What grieving people truly need versus the well-meaning but unhelpful comments we typically make.11:22 - Simple ways to support physical health during grief without adding guilt.13:44 - The dual process model: healthy oscillation between grieving and restoration activities.15:54 - Why the five stages of grief model creates harmful expectations about linear healing.20:04 - Practical techniques for intense grief moments: breathing, tapping, and nervous system regulation.25:37 - How grief extends beyond death to any major life change or unmet expectation.27:08 - Krista's top three tips: return to basics, process emotions supportively, stop grieving "correctly."All of the information on this podcast is for general informational purposes only. I've covered digital and practical effects in film and TV, but creating special effects for live theater is a whole other challenge. J&M Special Effects has been up to the task for 40 years. Their crew has worked on shows from Hadestown to Harry Potter and The Cursed Child to Disney musicals like Frozen and Aladdin. I get a behind-the-scenes tour of their Brooklyn warehouse, where failure is part of the process in figuring out how to make the magic work. I talk with partner and designer Jeremy Chernick, along with pyrotechnician Bohdan Bushnell, about how theatrical effects have evolved with new technology -- and why they can sometimes be too good at their jobs in making the impossible seem possible.    This episode is sponsored by Remi and ShipStation. We break down what they actually are, why they happen, and how mindset plays a critical role in pushing through. We'll cover the biological reasons your body sometimes needs to pause before moving forward, the powerful shift from thinking “stalled” to recognizing you're maintaining (which is progress in itself), and a practical, data-driven approach for breaking through without burning out. Want to be a guest or know someone would be a great fit? I am looking for military vets, active duty, military brats, veteran service orgs or anyone in the fitness industryHave you ever wondered what it takes to transform a passion project into a thriving business? In this captivating episode of Sisters in Service podcast, I sit down with Adam Rothenberg, founder of Call Me Adam, who turned his love for celebrity interviews into an entertainment empire featuring over 2,200 interviews and attracting more than 2 million visitors.Adam candidly shares the pivotal moment when, inspired by Pink's song "Courage," he left his secure corporate job in November 2019 to pursue entrepreneurship full-time—only to face the pandemic's devastating impact on the entertainment industry just months later. His story of resilience, strategic pivoting, and finding creative solutions offers invaluable insights for anyone navigating business uncertainties. What sets this conversation apart is Adam's practical approach to entrepreneurship. Unlike those who advocate for risky all-or-nothing leaps, he reveals how he created financial safety nets before transitioning and found strength through entrepreneurial communities. Military members considering business ownership will particularly appreciate his advice to start building ventures 5-7 years before leaving service, allowing businesses to gain traction while maintaining financial stability. The discussion delves into the power of community in entrepreneurship, with Adam explaining how finding the right mentor group transformed his business trajectory after years of struggling to monetize his platform. He also shares behind-the-scenes stories from his new book "Behind the Curtain," offering glimpses into his experiences interviewing entertainment icons from Nancy McKean to his dream interview subject, Dolly Parton.Whether you're just starting your entrepreneurial journey or looking to take your existing business to new heights, this episode delivers actionable wisdom on preparing financially, finding supportive communities, and persisting through challenges. As Adam wisely notes, "Take the leap, but find the way to do it that makes you comfortable.https:/www.callmeadam.comSupport the show

When nineteen-year-old Patty Hearst was kidnapped from her apartment in February 1974, everyone assumed the heiress had been abducted for the purposes of ransom. However, in the days that followed, Hearst's kidnappers, the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), made themselves known when they sent a letter demanding the Hearst family provide food to every needy family in California. For nearly two months, the SLA held Patty Hearts captive, or so it seemed to the public. But when the group's demands were met and Hearst was given the opportunity to leave, the teenager shocked the world when, rather than flee her captors, she joined their ranks in support of their cause. Hearst's decision set in motion a chain of events that resulted in several acts of explosive violence and forever changed the way we think about victims of kidnapping. Yet in all the analysis of the case over the last fifty years, one question remains unanswered, and possibly unanswerable: Was Patty Hearst a willing accomplice to the SLA or was she a brainwashed victim trying to survive a traumatic ordeal?Thank you to the Amazing Dave White (of BRING ME THE AXE PODCAST) for research and writing assistance!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1974. Think of it as a behind-the-scenes tour as to why you shouldn't ignore the people behind the curtain.  Sarah shares her multifaceted journey, hopping from academia to the industry, kind of like a superhero changing outfits—except her cape was probably a lab coat. She unpacks the art of juggling her responsibilities and her knack for customer interaction. Spoiler alert: building trust with clients is crucial, unless you want them to think you're just some mad scientist in a basement! They explore how remote work has flipped team communication on its head. You might think it's just a lot of Zoom calls and pajama pants, but there's more to it. Sarah reflects on her career path, her growth, and the ups and downs with impostor syndrome along the way. And to top it all off, she dishes out some golden advice for aspiring application scientists — hint: humility and adaptability are your BFFs. So, grab a snack and settle in for a fun and insightful chat that might just inspire you to embrace your inner scientist — or perhaps become one.

Send us a textIn this episode, we analyze the Malfoy family and discuss what should be carried over into the TV show. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:·      1:53 Something has to change. I'm not saying something is wrong, that's just a fact. The books are the books and the films are the films. The TV has to show us something new, and that will mean they have to change something. They can either put in more, or less. More would make them worse and more potent, and less would draw the curtain back a little and show us a softer side to them.·      11:03 Lucius is terrible. Should we keep that? I think we should, but not for the reason you might expect. We saw enough in the films to understand that there is so much more under the surface than we might imagine. I want to see more of that.·      14:53 Narissa is the good guy. Should we keep that? For her, it might be worth a change. We don't know her as well because she was introduced later in the story, so if we can change some moments around to gain more perspective on her sooner, that might be more valuable. ·      19:41 Draco is the victim. Keep that? For sure. There isn't much wrong with how he was portrayed. We got more of those deep, vulnerable scenes from him that really show us who he is. Draco is under immense pressure when Voldemort orders him to kill Dumbledore, and that should be preserved.·      25:17 More Malfoy inner workings. We didn't get many scenes where the three Malfoys were interacting with each other outside of other company, and those kinds of scenes might be the most important in terms of understanding who they are as a family.Having anything you want to hear or say? This week on The Vergecast, we enter the Jen-era of Hot Girl Vergecast Summer, with a deep dive into the business of the smart home. The Verge's smart home reviewer, Jennifer Pattison Tuohy (aka Jen), chats with Ken Fairbanks, a longtime customer of Insteon who ended up buying the smart lighting company when it went into bankruptcy. Ken shares the story of how one of the original smart lighting protocols, founded in the post-X10 era when home automation moved from wired to wireless, floundered, and how he and a band of users brought it back from the dead. He dishes what he's learned about how to keep the lights on — from customer loyalty and the value of subscriptions, to what tariffs are doing to the industry and how some hardware companies are just pyramid schemes. Then, in a special supersized (and we mean SUPER) Vergecast Hotline (call 866-VERGE11 or email vergecast@theverge.com), Jen is joined by smart home expert Richard Gunther, co-host of The Smart Home Show, to tackle a bunch of your burning smart lighting questions. They answer everything from how to move your smart home to which Thread border router you should buy for your Matter setup. Plus, they run down their own smart lighting set-ups.
