Show #782   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 18th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Thank you to Patron PHILIP TRAUTMAN who is now an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER.   POLESTAR ANNOUNCES FIRST US RETAIL CITIES “Polestar will begin by selling its electric performance cars this year in New York, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. In the first half of 2021, its retail footprint will grow to include Boston, Denver, Texas, Washington DC, and Florida regions.” Says electrek: “The all-electric $60,000 Polestar 2 sedan provides 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet torque in an all-wheel-drive configuration. Its 78-kWh battery pack is expected to offer an estimated (albeit optimistic) 275 miles of range. “   https://electrek.co/2020/05/18/polestar-announces-first-us-retail-cities-selling-evs-from-coast-to-coast/   FORD SAYS THE MUSTANG MACH-E CAN ADD 61 MILES OF RANGE IN 10 MINUTES “2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, which Ford said Friday can add 61 miles of range in just 10 minutes. That's at a charging rate of 150 kilowatts, available for example at an Electrify America DC high-speed charging station.” Reports Motor Authoirty: “The pace is comparable to what similar sized battery-electric SUVs like the Audi E-Tron and Jaguar I-Pace deliver, though Tesla's latest V3 Supercharger is claimed by the company to be capable of delivering 75 miles in 5 minutes for the Model 3 thanks to charging at 250 kw.”   https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1125693_ford-says-the-mustang-mach-e-can-add-61-miles-of-range-in-10-minutes   VW SETS THE STAGE FOR ID.BUZZ WITH AN ELECTRIC VERSION OF THE TRANSPORTER   “Volkswagen is in the process of transforming the deliciously retro ID.Buzz concept it unveiled at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show into a production model. In the meantime, it's catering to van drivers who want or need to go electric by releasing a battery-powered variant of the Transporter developed jointly with German tuning firm ABT” says Autoblog: “Called eTransporter, the van looks just like a diesel-powered model when it's viewed from the outside, with the exception of a small ABT emblem on the grille. Volkswagen hasn't released images of the interior, but it noted a power meter replaces the tachometer in the instrument cluster. It's what's under the sheetmetal that counts here. Pricing for the Volkswagen eTransporter starts at £42,060, or about $51,000 at the current (and volatile) conversion rate. In comparison, the diesel-powered Transporter carries a base price of £27,626 (around $33,000).”   A range of up to 82 miles on a single charge. Charging is carried out via a Type 2 CCS inlet, with a 7.2 kW on-board charger fitted, and rapid DC charging possible at up to 50 kW. This makes for a rapid charge in around 45 minutes, topping up the 37.3 kWh battery (32.5 kWh net) to 80%.   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/18/vw-electric-transporter-van/   JAGUAR CANCELS I-PACE ETROPHY “Jaguar has axed the I-PACE eTROPHY series, announcing on Monday that the single-make all-electric series will end following the 2019-20 FIA Formula E Championship season.”  According to e-racing365: “Launched in 2018 utilizing production-based SUVs, the eTROPHY served as the exclusive support series for Formula E, although has struggled with car counts from the onset. The British manufacturer had initially targeted 20-car grids but saw on average 12 vehicles during its inaugural season in 2018-19, which was won by Brazilian Sergio Jimenez. Season 2, which kicked off with a double-header at Diriyah in November, featured nine cars, with an additional race taking place in Mexico City prior to the suspension of events due to the coronavirus pandemic”   https://e-racing365.com/i-pace-etrophy/jaguar-cancels-i-pace-etrophy/   FERRARI SLAMS THE BRAKES ON AN ELECTRIC SUPERCAR ”Ferrari has poured cold water on the idea of a pure electric supercar, claiming current battery technology is not good enough. The bold statement comes despite a number of rival brands planning to release electric supercars in the near future.” Says CarAdvice.com.au: “In an interview with UK magazine AutoCar, Ferrari’s chief marketing and commercial officer Enrico Galliera said suitable battery technology is more than five years away. “We firmly believe that battery technology is not yet developed enough to meet the needs of a supercar,” Mr Galliera told AutoCar. “In the next five years, we do not believe the technology will be able to meet the needs of a Ferrari.” Swedish brand Koenigsegg also unveiled its 1270kW electric Gemera 'Mega-GT' earlier this year. Lotus has also planned delivery of its 1470kW/2000Nm Evija electric hypercar to begin in 2020. Earlier this month, Tesla announced it would defer production of its electric Roadster model, which is expected to have supercar levels of performance, however did not cite battery technology as a reason.“   HOW E-BIKES COULD ANSWER OUR COMMUTING PROBLEMS “Demand has rocketed as people consider how to get into work after lockdown. They enable riders to avoid car use and the close contact of public transport – but just how safe, affordable and healthy are they?” asks The Guardian: “Many in the cycling world are wondering if this could be the moment when e-bikes, which are hugely popular in some other European countries (about 40% of bikes sold in the Netherlands are e-bikes), could take off in the UK as well. The biggest barrier in the UK is cyclists feeling unsafe on the roads. In places such as the Netherlands and Denmark, riders of e-bikes, as well as of any other bike, enjoy the fruits of decades of work to make roads safe for cyclists. Now such countries are braced for a further e-bike boom. The European Cycling Federation says that, Europe-wide, e-bike sales grew 22% year on year in 2019, and are expected to rise much faster this year.”   https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/may/17/i-can-just-glide-through-traffic-how-e-bikes-could-answer-our-commuting-problems         QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? All dies erfährst du in der aktuellen Folge unseres Podcasts. Einschalten und zuhören.
