Episode #76: Fate of the U.S. Dollar The U.S. Dollar has been the global reserve currency since 1944, when the Bretton Woods Agreement solidified the transition from the British Pound to U.S. Dollars. Recently, several clients have asked whether the U.S. Dollar can withstand challenges from growing currencies, like the Chinese Yuan, or from digital currencies. In this episode, we will review the history of currency markets, along with a deep dive into the strength of the U.S. Dollar compared to other major global currencies. Want more Flourish Insights? EPISODE TRANSCRIPT Hi everyone, Jay Pluimer here with Flourish Insights. As the director of investments at Flourish Wealth Management, I take pride in providing our clients, colleagues, and friends with resources and information that can help them make strategic and effective choices regarding their investments. Did you know we have an Alexa Skill? To listen on your Alexa device, just say, “Alexa, play Flourish Insights.”   Today, in response to client questions, we are discussing the Fate of the US Dollar.   I appreciate when clients ask questions that challenge whether or not the foundations of the current market are sustainable in the future. Some of those questions relate to US versus International investments or the opportunities for a portfolio with 60% in Stocks and 40% in Bonds to earn an attractive return. An excellent example of client questions popped up recently when a couple different clients asked questions about the sustainability and reliability of the US Dollar as the global default currency. These questions challenged whether or not the US Dollar could withstand challenges from growing currencies like the Chinese Yuan or from digital currencies. It was a helpful opportunity to review the history of currency markets along with a deep dive into the strength of the US Dollar compared to other major global currencies. The US Dollar has been the global reserve currency since 1944 when the Bretton Woods Agreement solidified the transition from the British Pound to US Dollars. This was a reflection of the balance of power for the United States as the largest economy in the world in the 1940s, a status that the US continues to hold. Although the definition of a reserve currency can be complicated, the most effective way to explain this status is that countries selling goods and services to the US and are paid in dollars, meaning that the more business a country does with the US the more dollars they have in their Treasury. For example, China is the second largest economy in the world and a major trade partner of the United States, resulting in China holding over 1 Trillion US Dollars. The result is that it would be very difficult for the Chinese Yuan to replace the US Dollar as the global currency because that would significantly reduce the value of one of the largest assets sustaining the value of their own currency. The US Dollar represents about 60% of global foreign exchange reserves. The closest competitor is the Euro at 20% and no other currency represents more than 6%. A primary reason for the US Dollar to maintain its status as the global reserve currency is that it has consistently represented between 60% and 66% of global foreign exchange reserves, dominating all competitors by a significant margin. This consistency is impressive considering the introduction of the Euro as a global currency in 1999 and the entry of the Chinese Yuan in 2010. In addition, the US Dollar is valued relative to other currencies while the Chinese Yuan has an exchange rate that is controlled by the Chinese Government, an arrangement that has created complications for currency markets on a periodic basis over the years. A final aspect to consider for a reserve currency is the percent of global transactions that take place in that currency. Each transaction means US Dollars are being bought and sold, resulting in a transition of currency between the two countries. Right now over 96% of transactions in the Americas are in US Dollars and 70% of global transactions are also in US Dollars. Any competing currency would need to surpass these benchmarks to challenge the US Dollar as the reserve currency, something that hasn't happened over at least the past 50 years. The premise that a digital currency could replace the US Dollar would mean that almost all of the transactions would need to change to a new currency with the understanding that each transaction would effectively reset the currency value because there wouldn't be a global economy supporting the value of the currency. It would also mean that countries like China would have to be comfortable selling over $1 Trillion of US Dollars in exchange for a digital currency that is effectively controlled by consumers instead of a government or governmental agency. One of the digital currency options referenced in a currency article forwarded by a client was being launched by Russia and Iran, two countries that represent under 5% of the global economy, meaning that the other 95% of the world would need to agree that two of the smaller economies would be preferred over the United States which represents almost 60% of the global economy. Similar to the digital currency question, anything is possible but it would be hard to imagine governments and corporations taking the risk that the value of their goods and services wouldn't be supported by a recognizable economic infrastructure. Based on this research, the Fate of the US Dollar is strong. As long as the United States is the largest open trading economy in the world, as long as every country and company wants access to the US economy, and as long as it would be both an inconvenience and a big risk to switch default currencies, the position of the US Dollar as the reserve currency is secure. It was a helpful exercise to review the reasons why the US Dollar is the reserve currency and what would be required for an alternative option to take its place, but it was also reassuring to conclude that a significant change is not visible on the horizon.   For more up-to-date insights into the market, the economy, and what it all means for your portfolio, subscribe to Flourish Insights on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Episode #73: If it Bleeds, it Leads Media companies are in the business of making money, and their profit motives tend to supersede other agendas. However, we may have reached a saturation point when it comes to negative financial news stories, with some investors having a skewed view of market performance that is not based in reality. It may be time for fewer flashy headlines and more context, and that's what we'll examine in this episode. Always check back next week for more Flourish Insights with Jay Pluimer and don't forget to check out our insights blog at https://www.flourishinsights.com, Please write a review of this podcast on Apple Podcasts or Alexa EPISODE TRANSCRIPT Hi everyone, Jay Pluimer here with Flourish Insights. As the director of investments at Flourish Wealth Management, I take pride in providing our clients, colleagues, and friends with resources and information that can help them make strategic and effective choices regarding their investments. Did you know we have an Alexa Skill? To listen on your Alexa device, just say, “Alexa, play Flourish Insights.”   Today, we are discussing the role of media and their commitment to the premise that If it Bleeds, it Leads.   This will not be an anti-media podcast episode. However, the reality is that the vast majority of media companies are in the business of making money. That fact is also true for social media companies that amplify messaging and storylines from mainstream media. The profit motive supersedes any potential political agendas for media companies, in my opinion, although some stories may be skewed to appeal to certain audiences. It has been startling to meet with a large number of Flourish clients over the past few months who are honestly surprised to see that their accounts have positive returns in the first few months of 2023. The stock and bond markets have both been up pretty consistently through the first 4 months of the year, including parts of the market that have done poorly over the past years like Emerging Markets and International Stocks. Although I don't expect the media to provide a fair and balanced approach to all of their news stories, the emphasis on negative storylines may have reached a saturation point when investors are no longer aware that they are making money. For example, I was watching the news while getting ready for work in late February when a story tease before a commercial break stated “don't check your 401k statements”. That statement caught my attention because I wasn't aware of a significant market dip over the past few days, so I stopped what I was doing to look at the latest financial news stories and market movements, all of which were positive for the week. I was motivated by the tease to stick around for the news story which basically summarized that 2022 was a bad year for Stocks and Bonds, noting that globally balanced portfolios with around 60% in Stocks and 40% in Bonds had one of their worst years on record. All of that information was correct, but it wasn't any more relevant in late February than it was at the beginning of the year and there was no mention during the news story about stock markets performing well to start the year. In addition, if I was tempted to look up market performance by watching the news story, then I can only imagine how many other people did the exact opposite of the tease and checked their 401k statements that morning. My conclusion was that the story was mostly accurate while leaving out any information about positive trends, but it wasn't “news” from the standpoint that the information wasn't new. The fact is that negative storylines about bank failures or high mortgage rates or growing credit card debt can be accurate, but need more context than is being provided by most media companies to fully understand the story that is being presented. Leading a newscast by showing logos of local banks in a story about bank failures is designed to feed into fears that your local banks are in trouble. Although the news story ends up being about Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank New York, both of which failed earlier this year, the implication is that the same thing could happen to local banks that are used by the viewers. The missing context is that Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank New York had a very specific chain of events that led to their failures, so unless your local bank has huge venture capital loans, has over 25% of its customers in the Cryptocurrency industry, or has overextended themselves with bad investments your accounts are safe. Plus, FDIC Insurance supports cash and CD balances up to $250,000 which is probably more than the vast majority of viewers would have at the bank. I don't blame the media for telling stories that attract and retain viewers because that's what they need to do in order to have advertising dollars. I also don't blame members of the media for not being experts about the banking system or failing to differentiate between a healthy balance sheet at a local bank and a unique set of bad decisions at a bank in a different part of the country. However, it's important for members of the Financial Services industry to share context and information to help clients understand the news better and then allow them to make their own conclusions. For example, I had a client ask me whether or not they should use some of their cash to buy bars of gold, a question that I am guessing was motivated by fears and worries created by the media (FYI that I said “no” to buying gold because it earns 0% interest, never pays a dividend, and there is no guarantee of getting the value of your investment back compared to buying a 12-month CD with 5% interest and FDIC Insurance on the value of your investment). The goal of this podcast is to encourage listeners to look for more information and ask your own questions whenever you see a news story that provokes fear. That applies as much to a warning about urban violence and tornadoes as it does to concerns about the banking industry or your current 401k balance. In addition, it's important to remember that the person telling you the news has a motive to make money off the information they are sharing. The media isn't necessarily good or bad, but focusing most of the daily coverage on negative news stories without complete context will consistently create an environment of fear and anxiety that isn't conducive to making good long-term financial decisions.   For more up-to-date insights into the market, the economy, and what it all means for your portfolio, subscribe to Flourish Insights on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. An updated approach is that dividends are an important aspect of total return and help grow a portfolio through reinvestment. We're exploring this topic today, using historical data from the S&P 500 to illustrate important points for investors. To listen on your Alexa device, just say, “Alexa, play Flourish Insights.”   Today, we are reviewing the impact dividend income has on long-term performance by stating that Dividends Reward Discipline.   Dividends can be a surprisingly controversial discussion topic for investors and investment professionals. The traditional approach to dividends is that they are an important supplement to generating income and can be used to support a steady withdrawal rate in retirement. An updated approach is that dividends are an important aspect of total return and help grow a portfolio through reinvestment. Basically, dividends can be used to support distributions or be reinvested for long-term growth. In this episode, we will focus on the benefits of reinvesting dividends as part of a disciplined approach for long-term investors. I will be referencing information and statistics for the S&P 500 Index throughout this episode, so this is a quick reminder that the S&P 500 measures performance for the largest 500 companies on the US Stock Market. The companies in the S&P 500 change over time, based on market movements, and can be significantly different over time. This Index has the most reliable historical data and is a good reflection of US Large Cap stocks at any point in time. Although there are other good indexes to capture historical performance for this part of the market, the data I will reference over the next few minutes is all for the S&P 500. From 1928 to the end of 2022 the stock market increased by 21,500%, which leads to an annualized return of 5.8%. That is the return for the price of the Index and doesn't include reinvested dividends. Although 5.8% is a solid return, the S&P 500 Index returned 9.9% annually when dividends are reinvested and included in the total return calculation. In other words, reinvesting dividends resulted in a return that was almost 70% higher over a 95-year time period. My initial reaction to these numbers was surprise because I did not think dividend payments of a few percentage points a year would add up to such a big difference in returns. The gap is huge when comparing the growth of $1 from 1928 with price increases alone growing to $216 compared to $7,500 with dividend reinvestments. This is where the word discipline comes in because a significant part of the performance difference is due to compounding. Frequently referenced as the 8th Wonder of the World, a quote that is most often attributed to Albert Einstein, compounding reflects the impact of dividend payments from 80 or 90 years ago that are allowed to grow over time. The disciplined part is to let the dividends continue to grow instead of cashing them out to cover short-term spending needs. The longer the time period an investor has, the more compounding will work in their favor. In fact, once the historical performance data is broken down into components it becomes clear that dividends are not a magical source of investment returns; instead, the point is that leaving money in the market for multiple decades will increase the opportunity to maximize long-term gains. Reinvesting dividends to support higher long-term performance is an important aspect of being a disciplined investor. In addition, minimizing fees and taxes will result in better long-term returns, as will continuing to add money to your portfolio regardless of the market environment. Our goal at Flourish is to help clients follow a disciplined investment approach to capitalize on opportunities that reward long-term investors while encouraging all investors to embrace these evidence-based concepts.   For more up-to-date insights into the market, the economy, and what it all means for your portfolio, subscribe to Flourish Insights on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Episode #69: “Past Performance is No Guarantee of Future Results” This common client disclosure is typically meant as a warning that positive results are not always sustainable, but what if we look at it from a different angle? Just because 2022 was a bad year for the markets, it doesn't necessarily mean the same will happen in 2023. So, let's talk through what we might expect from a typical 60/40 “center of gravity” portfolio this year. This common type of diversification is meant to provide long-term upside growth with downside protection from bonds. What will it produce for investors in 2023? Listen in for my take. Enjoying the show? Please write a review of this podcast on Apple Podcasts or Alexa - thanks! EPISODE TRANSCRIPT: Hi everyone, Jay Pluimer here with Flourish Insights. As the director of investments at Flourish Wealth Management, I take pride in providing our clients, colleagues, and friends with resources and information that can help them make strategic and effective choices regarding their investments. Did you know we have an Alexa Skill? To listen on your Alexa device, just say, “Alexa, play Flourish Insights.”   Today, we are reviewing performance of a diversified portfolio over the past year using the compliance disclosure that “Past Performance is No Guarantee of Future Results”.   The title of this podcast refers to a common compliance disclosure about investment results. Typically the disclosure is a warning that the amazing performance results being quoted in an advertisement or client report are not necessarily sustainable. In this podcast we are flipping that concept on its head with a reminder that just because 2022 performance was bad, it doesn't necessarily mean the same thing will happen in 2023. I will be referring to a diversified portfolio with 60% in Stocks and 40% in Bonds or Cash, reflecting a common mix of investments to provide long-term upside growth from Stocks with downside protection from Bonds. Investment legend Peter Bernstein liked to call a 60/40 portfolio “the center of gravity” for long-term investors. That's because the 60% allocation to stocks would produce returns not much lower than a 100% stock position, while the 40% in Bonds and Cash usually buffered the sharp declines that stocks can deliver in down years. According to an article in The Wall Street Journal by Jason Zweig, a typical 60/40 portfolio lost about 15% in 2022, which would be the 4th worst year ever for that portfolio approach. The biggest driver of bad market returns in 2022 was rising interest rates, a theme that caused bond investments to have their worst year ever. Although bonds have historically reduced risk and offset stock market losses, we just experienced a bond market that should only happen once every 130 years. So why are we taking the approach that the historically bad returns for a 60/40 portfolio in 2022 don't necessarily predict similar returns in 2023? There continue to be questions about additional interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve along with valid concerns about an economic recession. However, for the first time in recent memory bonds are yielding over 4%. That yield provides a lot of cover for falling bond prices in a rising interest rate environment, along with more confidence that we won't experience a year with double-digit bond losses like 2022 again regardless of decisions by the Federal Reserve. The outlook for stocks is uncertain for 2023, with optimistic projections reflecting upside opportunities in the second half of the year. A combination of positive economic growth rates, improving corporate earnings, and low unemployment with rising wages creates a strong foundation for a sustained stock market recovery at some point over the next few years. However, even if stocks continue to struggle in 2023, we should not expect a double whammy from bonds leading to positive return projections. There are still no guarantees that we will have good returns this year, but we can rest assured that past performance from 2022 does not predict or dictate returns this year.   For more up-to-date insights into the market, the economy, and what it all means for your portfolio, subscribe to Flourish Insights on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Show #1451 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Saturday 30th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. THE FORD F-150 LIGHTNING ELECTRIC TRUCK HAS MORE POWER THAN WE THOUGHT! - Ford just announced that the power and payload ratings it had specified for the Lightning pickup are wrong. Luckily, they're "wrong" in the right direction—meaning the final horsepower and payload figures for the F-150 Lightning area actually better than expected. - originally was quoted as offering 426 hp with the standard-range pack and 563 with the juicier extended-range setup. Ford now says the standard-range model packs 452 hp, up 26 hp from Ford's "targeted" number, and the extended-range version doles out a mighty 580 hp, up 17 hp - it makes the standard-range Lightning the most powerful F-150 pickup ever - Ford also says the F-150 Lightning's payload figures have been revised upward, though less impressively so than the horsepower numbers. Certain, unspecified versions of the Lightning can "now haul an extra 235 pounds," per Ford, lifting the maximum one of the electric trucks can carry to 2,235 pounds. · Original Source : https://www.motortrend.com/news/2022-f-150-lightning-revised-power-payload-ratings/ FORD'S NEXT-GEN ELECTRIC TRUCK WILL HAVE ACTIVE AERO, MORE RANGE - Ford launched the F-150 Lightning earlier this week, and company CEO Jim Farley hinted at what is to come next. He let slip that the company's Tennessee manufacturing facility would produce a different type of F-Series pickup when production started there in a few years. - he did speak with Laycee from the Miss GoElectric YouTube Channel, who revealed on the latest InsideEVs.com podcast episode (34:44 mark) that the new pickup would have a radical design that some could find controversial. - Farley told her that the new electric pickup would feature active and deployable aero similar to a semi-truck, with the design focusing on maximizing efficiency. - The new truck would allegedly cost about $7,000 more than the F-150 Lightning and offer about 100 miles more of range. That means the Ford could offer 400-plus miles (643-plus kilometers). The current F-150 Lightning can deliver up to 320 miles (514 km). Ford has spent the last two years developing this new truck. - Ford will produce the new pickup at its manufacturing complex in Tennessee. - Blue Oval City, will produce the next generation of electric F-Series trucks and batteries. The site will have three gigafactories. The complex will see operations begin in 2025, so it could be a bit before we see this new pickup. Rawlinson's $263 million payday is one of the largest compensation packages paid to any executive in 2021. - The company's market value remained high enough over a six-month period for Rawlinson to collect four of the five tranches of performance-based units, according to the filing. - Lucid Group recently said it needed more cash to fund its plans, which include a second factory in Saudi Arabia, expected to open in 2025. The company raised $2 billion in convertible debt in December, but Bloomberg Intelligence forecasts that the startup may have to sell more stock to raise the necessary funds. The products range from the AC wallbox for homes, businesses and retail to the Terra 360 HPC charging point. - Shell reportedly intends to operate 500,000 charging points worldwide by 2025. By 2030, this number is to increase to 2.5 million. To achieve this, the oil company needs one thing above all: lots of charging points. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/04/29/shell-awards-another-charging-infrastructure-framework-contract-to-abb/ - Shell does not provide any further details on this in the strategy, so it is unclear which markets they will cover with how many charge points. Going by past activities, Shell has been active in several markets, reaching across Europe and even Canada. Recent acquisitions or attempts include NEw Motion and Ubitricity and Shell is a partner of Ionity. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/12/shell-to-install-half-a-million-charge-points-by-2025/ BIG OIL WANTS A PIECE OF THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE PIE - The likes of Shell, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, Equinor, and BP are all backing EV projects as they expand their portfolios to include non-traditional energy sectors. - In Europe, Shell has been just one of the oil majors to expand its EV charging network over the last year. Shell's subsidiary, ubitricity – standing for ubiquitous electricity – is using innovative technologies to enhance access to EV charging stations by powering cars across cities through lamp posts. Shell's public charging network, Shell Recharge, expects to have over 500,000 charging points globally by 2025, establishing locations across supermarkets, street-charging points, and EV hubs. - Shell is also leading by example by establishing an EV charging hub in London, replacing its petrol and diesel pumps with ultra-rapid 175kW charge points - Last year, Equinor also announced a $130-million investment in Solid Power, a U.S. firm developing all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) for electric vehicles. The BMW Group and Ford have also partnered with Solid Power to acquire ASSBs for their new EV models. Equinor believes the development of ASSBs could provide lower-cost EV batteries to the market. - This April, BP sent EV stock soaring with the announcement of a multi-year contract with Tritium. Tritium will provide almost 1,000 chargers for the U.K., Australian, and New Zealand markets. They would be called Terafactories, implying they would deliver more than 1 TWh in battery packs. With the 4680 cell delays, BYD is closer to achieving 1 TWh than Tesla. - Bridget McCarthy mapped all the cell plants BYD currently has and concluded it has an amazing installed capacity above 500 GWh. To be more precise, we're talking about 522 GWh, which is not counting a huge battery factory planned for Europe and some other plants – such as Huangpi, in Wuhan – that still have not disclosed how many cells they will be able to manufacture. - Tesla planned to make 100 GWh at Giga Nevada but would be delivering around 30 GWh. Most of its cars now need suppliers such as LG Energy Solution and CATL, which provides Tesla with LFP cells. - The list provided by the financial analyst at Snow Capital is impressive. Original Source : https://www.autoevolution.com/news/byd-is-closer-to-1-twh-than-tesla-capacity-already-surpassed-500-gwh-187738.html Bridget McCarthy on Twitter: “In less than a week, 12 different business units within BYD completely shifted to mask production. In just five weeks, BYD went from producing zero masks, to being the WORLD'S LARGEST SURGICAL MASK PRODUCER. By May, BYD was producing over 50M masks per day. - In a matter of days, BYD's designers drew more than 400 renderings of mask machines, the electronics group prepared the necessary parts, & 3,000 engineers from 13 business divisions started building. A week later, BYD was producing masks to be sent around the world. - The teams (i.e. battery business unit vs. logistics department) competed to have the highest daily mask output. BYD yanked battery engineers from the then-top-secret Blade battery project to oversee mask production, one of whom continually topped the “dragon and tiger list”. ELON MUSK DUMPS $8.5B IN TESLA STOCK AHEAD OF TWITTER BUY - Elon Musk has sold off a whopping $8.5 billion in Tesla stock this week as he prepares to acquire Twitter for $44 billion – but he insists that the rest of his stake in the electric car maker will remain untouched for now. - Securities filings revealed Friday that Musk sold 5.2 million Tesla shares via open-market transactions that occurred on Thursday. That brings the total to 9.6 million shares after earlier disclosures detailed earlier stock sales worth $4 billion on Tuesday and Wednesday. - The stock sales in total amounted to 5% of his stake in Tesla - Musk still owns nearly 16% of Tesla shares, according to FactSet data cited by the Wall Street Journal. Original Source : https://nypost.com/2022/04/29/elon-musk-dumps-8-5b-in-tesla-stock-ahead-of-twitter-buy/ ANNUAL MEETING: MERCEDES-BENZ CONTINUES ITS SUCCESSFUL TRANSFORMATION - Focusing on electric vehicles and growing the top-end segment at Mercedes-Benz has paid off. Four figures illustrate this transformation: Group sales of the top-end models increased by 30%, sales of electric passenger cars increased by 64%, sales of electric Vans 118% and adjusted EBIT of the Mercedes-Benz Group grew by 123%. - This year the company expects to make further progress toward its long-term strategic goal of CO2 neutrality. With the EQS SUV, EQE SUV, EQT and eCitan models more than 10 fully electric vehicles will have been presented by the end of 2022. Moreover, with the Ambition2039, Mercedes-Benz Cars has set itself the target of reaching an important milestone as early as 2030 on the road to CO2 neutrality: to halve CO2 emissions compared with 2020 levels. Here, the most important levers are electrifying the vehicle fleet, charging with green power, improving battery technology and by extensively using recycled materials and renewable energy in production sites. Potential CO2 emissions are also evaluated as a criterion when contracts are awarded to potential suppliers. - Mercedes-Benz plans to cover more than 70% of its energy requirements in production with renewable energy sources by 2030. Lockdowns in China have worsened the visibility of semiconductors and the logistics have become the next challenge for Tata Motors given the lack of availability of containers, he said. - The impact of the chip shortage is more “acute” in electric vehicles than gasoline models, Chandra said. The waiting period for electric vehicles at Tata Motors could be as much as six months, compared with four months for cars with internal combustion engines, he said. - Tata's foray into semiconductor making will also help its group firm, Tata Motors, which makes the iconic Jaguar Land Rover brands and has suffered due to these shortages. - also announced plans to launch its first-ever pure electric car by 2025. The five-seater Avinya will have no gasoline variants, Chandra told reporters in a briefing on Friday. - Tata Motors currently sells two battery-powered models, the Nexon EV and Tigor EV, but these cars also have variants that run on fossil fuels. Show #1449 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Thursday 28th  April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VW SAID TO CONSIDER BUILDING ID. BUZZ, ELECTRIC PICKUP IN THE US - Ever since Volkswagen unveiled the ID. Buzz in early March, the automaker constantly had to answer questions regarding the possibility that the electric van will also be made in the United States. - reports claim that Volkswagen is considering an expansion of its Chattanooga plant in Tennessee. A source close to the matter told Reuters that the automaker plans to build an electric pickup and the ID. Buzz at the new facility. - VW has not confirmed plans for an electric pickup yet, although VW Group CEO Herbert Diess and VW of America CEO Scott Keogh have vaguely hinted at such plans. - The report ties in with another one from Germany's Manager Magazin from earlier today. The publication wrote that Volkswagen was planning to build a second production plant in the US that would increase its annual capacity to up to 600,000 vehicles. - VW Group announced on March 21 that it plans to invest at least $7.1 billion in North America over the next five years. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/582632/vw-said-to-consider-building-id-buzz-electric-pickup-us/ VOLKSWAGEN REPORTEDLY CONSIDERING A SECOND US PRODUCTION SITE PLUS NEW BATTERY CELL PLANT - With competitors like Nissan, General Motors, and Ford Motor Co. all manufacturing EVs in the state of Tennessee, it is very quickly becoming a mecca for electrification in the US and could soon be number one, according to the head of the Tennessee Valley Authority. - Current ID.4 production capacity in Chattanooga is expected to be from 100,000 to 120,000 units per year as the automaker adds a third production shift creating about 4,500 jobs. Combined with existing production for VW's Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, the Chattanooga plant would essentially be maxed out. - The report also states that VW is considering a battery plant near the Chattanooga plant(s) as well. - According to VW exec Scott Keogh, the company's current plan is to source its EV battery cells from  SK Innovation at the new $2.6 billion factory it is building in Georgia. In terms of a potential US battery plant, Keogh said VW will need units. Original Source : https://electrek.co/2022/04/29/volkswagen-reportedly-considering-a-second-us-production-site-plus-new-battery-cell-plant/ VOLKSWAGEN & BP LAUNCH PARTNERSHIP TO ROLL-OUT EV FAST CHARGING IN EUROPE - Volkswagen Group and energy giant bp have launched a strategic partnership that will aim to boost the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across Europe, unveiling the first charger in Dusseldorf, Germany. The partnership aims to rapidly building a fast charging network across Europe by 2024. - The roll-out will feature Volkswagen's Flexpole 150kW charging units, each of which feature two charge points, and an integrated battery storage system. - The Flexpole units can be directly connected to a low voltage grid which removes the requirement for a dedicated substation and costly construction work, while providing fast charging speeds of up to 150kW - The first phase of the roll-out will see up to an additional 4,000 charge points at bp's Aral retail sites in Germany and bp retail sites in the UK over the next 24 months. - bp's charging network will be integrated into Volkswagen, ŠKODA and Seat/Cupra in-car dashboards ensuring drivers can find their nearest charger seamlessly. Original Source : https://www.autofutures.tv/2022/04/28/volkswagen-bp-launch-partnership-to-roll-out-ev-fast-charging-in-europe/ USPS HIT BY CAROLYN MALONEY ON LIMITING ELECTRIC VEHICLE PURCHASES - he U.S. Postal Service used “faulty” assumptions in limiting its purchase of electric mail-delivery trucks in its $6 billion fleet replacement plan, a top House Democrat said Tuesday. - The postal service used a low gas price and assumed higher maintenance costs for an electric vehicle than for gas-powered, said Representative Carolyn Maloney, a New York Democrat who is pushing for the service to buy more battery-powered vehicles. - The service last month said it had doubled, to about 10,000, the number of electric vehicles in its initial order. The trucks will be among 50,000 Next Generation Delivery Vehicles from Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corp. - Maloney referred to a Government Accountability Office report released Tuesday. The congressional watchdog said the postal service used a gas price that is almost $2 per gallon less than the current national average price of gas. - The Postal Service is moving forward over objections of the Biden administration with its $6 billion plan to purchase as many as 165,000 mail trucks over the next 10 years, with up to 90% of those running on gasoline instead of more climate-friendly batteries. It's Monday 25th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VOLKSWAGEN MAKES CHARGING EASIER AND MORE CONVENIENT - The volume brands Volkswagen, Cupra/Seat and ŠKODA are now offering simple tariffs for public charging, allowing customers to charge at fixed kilowatt-hour prices throughout the entire charging network. With this step, the company creates optimal cost transparency. - In the future, customers will have the choice between three basic tariffs, each with fixed prices per kilowatt hour charged. The new tariffs apply to customers of We Charge (Volkswagen), Powerpass (ŠKODA), Easy Charging (SEAT/CUPRA) and Elli and offer top conditions for Ionity fast chargers, among other benefits. - Depending on the country, prices can be different, but always follow the same logic.02 Elli, our in-house brand, which is responsible for all activities in the Group around the topic of charging & energy is the backbone of the offer. - charging stations will be highlighted in the e-cars navigation system and drivers will be offered the option of choosing to drive there. The quality criteria will include reliability, weather protection and if there is a catering option. This means that customers will be able to target charging stations with a canopy and coffee offering. The program is scheduled to start later this year. - Another component of the quality offensive is the market launch of Plug&Charge. The function will be activated from the middle of the year via a software update in all e-cars of the volume brands based on the MEB architecture. The vehicle identifies itself at the corresponding charging stations using the ISO 15118 standard and automatically starts the charging process. Plug&Charge is supported by IONITY, Aral/bp, E.ON and Iberdrola Original Source : https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/quality-offensive-volkswagen-makes-charging-easier-and-more-convenient-7902 RIVIAN R1T CAN NOW CHARGE AT UP TO 500 AMPS WITH NEW SOFTWARE UPDATE - the latest 2022.11.02 software update for the Rivian R1T all-electric pickup, released this month and examined by Out of Spec Reviews. - Kyle Conner, among various changes, Rivian has increased the maximum DC fast charging current from 450 A to 500 A, which is expected to slightly increase the rate of range replenishing. - Now, we saw that it can take 498 A right away at a low state-of-charge, which combined with around 400 V is over 200 kW - 204 kW at 14% SOC to be specific. The peak (according to the charger's display) was about 217 kW, above 40% SOC. That's actually very close to the 210 kW peak value declared in technical papers. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/581819/rivian-r1t-500a-charging-software-update/ HEAT PUMPS INCLUDED IN GM EVS COULD GIVE THEM A REAL-WORLD RANGE ADVANTAGE - GM confirmed Monday that it plans to include heat-pump technology in all of its current and upcoming Ultium-platform electric vehicles. - That includes the Hummer EV now being delivered and the soon-arriving Cadillac Lyriq, plus many more to arrive in the next several years. In them, the tech will help recover low-level waste heat in ways that can add up in meaningful ways—bringing them quicker acceleration, faster charging, and a longer range - the one in GM EVs employs a compressor-and-evaporator component system and a specially chosen refrigerant that undergoes a phase change. A physical reaction pays off in the release of energy as it goes from gas to liquid—to in effect amplify whatever energy it can scavenge along the way. - That extra can go toward cabin heating, low-level electrical functions, or even preconditioning of the battery—potentially extending range by as much as 10%. Original Source : https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1135681_heat-pumps-included-in-gm-evs-could-give-them-a-real-world-range-advantage GM INTRODUCES NEW ENERGY-SAVING FEATURE FOR EVS  - “Having a ground-up EV architecture gives us the freedom to build in standard features like Ultium's energy recovery capabilities,” said Doug Parks, GM executive vice president, global product development, purchasing and supply chain. “This helps us squeeze more efficiency, performance and overall customer benefit out of our EVs.” - Ultium's energy recovery even enables GMC Hummer EV's Watts to Freedom feature. Energy recovery pre-cools the propulsion system to help the all-electric supertruck accelerate from 0-60 mph in approximately 3 seconds. Original Source : https://businessjournaldaily.com/gm-introduces-new-energy-saving-feature-for-evs/ GM's EV Tech Captures Body Heat and Uses It to Warm the Cabin - Covered by 11 patents and four publications, the development of Ultium energy recovery traces its inception back to GM's first EV, the EV1, in the late 1990s, when GM engineers first developed an EV heat pump. Ultium energy recovery is available on all current Ultium vehicles and planned for future Ultium vehicles. He declined to disclose when the all-electric Corvette would be released or whether the “electrified” model would be a traditional hybrid or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. - GM's confirmation of the electrified Corvettes comes amid increased pressure from Wall Street for legacy automakers to better compete against EV industry leader Tesla. It also comes a day before GM's crosstown rival, Ford Motor, is scheduled to host an event for its electric F-150 Lightning pickup, which has received significant attention from investors and media. Show #1445 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Sunday 24th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. WHY THE F-150 LIGHTNING LAUNCH IS A PIVOTAL MOMENT FOR FORD AND EVS - Ford Motor Co. will become the first legacy automaker to launch a mainstream electric pickup — a pivotal moment for the automaker that potentially could accelerate the push to electrify America's vehicle fleet given F-150's profitability and popularity. - But being early also makes it that much more important for Ford to pull this off without any major hitches, experts say — even as the company attempts to ramp up production volumes amid myriad supply-chain disruptions, an ongoing pandemic, rising commodity costs and geopolitical tensions - It's difficult to overstate the importance of the F-Series lineup to Ford's business. - In a typical year, the truck franchise nets sales of roughly 900,000 trucks. It's been the best-selling truck in the U.S. for 45 consecutive years. And it is Ford's cash cow, generating more revenue than the major U.S. sports leagues combined, as well as Fortune 100 companies like Nike Inc. and the Coca-Cola Co., according to a 2020 Boston Consulting Group study commissioned by Ford. - Ford now is moving to boost annual Lightning production to 150,000 units by next year. Overall, the company is investing $50 billion in electrification through 2026 and eyeing annual production of more than 2 million EVs globally by then. - The company has said that the majority of Lightning reservations have come from customers who are new to Ford — not the automaker's truck base. Original Source : https://eu.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/ford/2022/04/24/ford-f-150-lightning-electric-truck-launch-ev/7382547001/ FORD PATENTS TANK TURN, POSSIBLY FOR F-150 LIGHTNING - Rivian made quite a splash with its viral video portraying one of its R1T electric pickups essentially turning on the spot, like a tank, by driving the wheels on one side forward, while the others are going in reverse. However, the feature is not currently present in its production vehicles, and Ford also patented its own version - The patent drawing below shows what appears to be an F-150 Lightning but text makes no direct mention of that truck - unlike the Rivian R1T and R1S, the Ford F-150 Lightning doesn't come with a quad-motor setup, with one motor driving each individual wheel. So far, Ford has only announced dual-motor versions, and in order for those to be able to perform a tank turn, the manufacturer will need to resort to reversing one side and not the other via gears, or just applying lock to all four wheels. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/581678/ford-patent-tank-turn-f150-lightning/ MORE AMERICANS VIEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES AS A PRIMARY CAR - A new consumer survey conducted by MINI USA reveals various shifts in American consumers' sentiment toward electric vehicles (EVs) over the last three years. The survey, which repeated the same set of questions used in a 2019 questionnaire carried out by MINI USA, indicates that more Americans – and particularly younger and female consumers – view electric vehicles as a primary car in the household more than any other use case.  This represents a shift from 2019 where more respondents selected “commuting car” and “city car” as preferred uses.  Commissioned by Engine's CARAVAN®, the survey further explores consumers‘ level of knowledge about the EV infrastructure in their regions, as well as personal attitudes toward EV ownership and travel needs. - A point that has remained consistent from both surveys is daily   travel distance, as 76% of respondents say that 75 miles of battery   range is sufficient for everyday driving. Only a 3% increase over the   course of three years, consumers' daily driving distances continue to   remain well below the current range of all new electric vehicles on   the market today. - About 63% of all respondents in 2022 still consider EV owners to     be early adopters, which is only 3% lower over the last three years.     While this pioneering connotation may sound complimentary to some,     it highlights a need for more mainstream awareness of the     accessibility, daily usage, and convenience of electric vehicles today. - Greater visibility for charging stations is needed, though some     progress has been made. About 35% of consumers now know where their     nearest EV charging port is located, a slight improvement from 26%     in 2019. They have signed a framework agreement and say they will roll out the DC infrastructure “at scale.” - Mer Norway (formerly Grønn Kontakt) was founded in 2009 and has since built over 300 fast-charging stations throughout Norway. Owned by Statkraft, the company also has a foothold in Sweden, Germany, Austria, and the UK. - Kempower has a range of DC charging stations delivering 40 to 320 kW. The company did not state which type of hardware Mer will use in Norway. The system is especially ideal for electric buses and parties offering fast charging for electric passenger cars. The need for simultaneous and frequent fast charging is easily fulfilled with S-Series charging satellite posts.  Due to the modular structure, the standard Kempower charging system offers power from 40 kW to 600 kW. - The S-Series charging satellite system consists of a C-Series charging power unit and 4 double satellites or 8 single satellites, with a maximum total of 8 charging outputs. Inside the cabinet, there are Kempower power modules that each provide 40 kW of charging power. 1 to 4 modules can be installed in a single C-Series cabinet whereas one charging power unit can have 1 to 3 cabinets. All in all up to 12 modules can be installed in a charging power unit.  You can start with one module and acquire more when needed. The charging power can be distributed dynamically into each charging output. To begin, We Drive Solar has equipped 25 Hyundai IONIQ 5 BEVs with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology to send power back to homes and businesses in the region during peak energy hours. - By implementing a holistic system of solar panels, charging stations, and shared vehicles with V2G capabilities like the modified IONIQ 5s, the companies seek to power 2,530 homes in Utrecht to create the “world's first bi-directional city.” - When vehicles do need to be used, residents of Utrecht will be able to drive a shared car through We Drive Solar, offering EVs like the IONIQ 5s equipped with V2G tech. The initial rollout is 25 BEVs, but Hyundai has already shared intentions to implement 150 over the course of 2022. - In the Utrecht region, renewables like solar and wind power are the main sources of energy. That energy can then be stored in the battery packs of the IONIQ 5s to drive around as shared vehicles, but also use V2G capabilities to send that stored energy back to the city during peak hours. In the beginning Tesla mainly displayed road markers and a few vehicles, and over time started to gradually add more types of vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic cones, speed bumps, even dogs. - The 3D model Tesla uses to represent our vehicle on the display is much more detailed than other vehicle models. Tesla can make other vehicle models just as detailed, however they're purposely vague to represent any vehicle. Show #1443 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Friday 22nd April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. RENAULT WEIGHS SEPARATING ELECTRIC CAR BUSINESS VIA IPO - Renault (RENA.PA) said on Friday all options were on the table for separating its electric vehicle (EV) business, including a possible public listing in the second half of 2023. - Renault has been pushing ahead with plans to split its electric vehicle and combustion engine businesses as it seeks to catch up with rivals such as Tesla (TSLA.O) and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) in the race to cleaner driving. - Ford (F.N) said last month it would run its EV business separately from its legacy combustion engine operations. - The company said sales of fully-electric and hybrid vehicles rose 13% and accounted for 36% of the total. Prices were up 5.6% from the first quarter of 2021 as the group pursues sales of more profitable cars Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/renaults-q1-sales-fall-ukraine-conflict-semiconductor-crisis-hit-market-2022-04-22 2024 BMW I7 M70: WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PERFORMANCE MODEL - BMW with its new i7 doesn't want to challenge the most powerful electric sedans currently on the market. The current most potent version is the i7 xDrive60, whose two electric motors make 536 horsepower, sprints to sixty in 4.5 seconds - The manufacturer will launch an M-badged model, expected to be called i7 M70, which will be considerably quicker thanks to a power output of 660 horsepower and a peak torque rating of 737 pound-feet (1,000 Nm). - The i7 is powered by a 107.8 kWh (101.7 kWh usable) pack that pushes the xDrive60 version up to an EPA rated range of 300 miles - expect that to go down to maybe 280 miles in the M70. Their business model includes leasing high power charging stations to private operators to add 5,000 ultra-fast chargers (UFC) by 2025. - The Group has reportedly started installing a proprietary network of high power charging stations last March when launching the 800-volt electric vehicles, Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Hyundai says its 350 kW charging stations can charge an EV battery equipped with an 800-volt system within 18 minutes to 80 per cent - In today's statement, Hyundai also reported it is now operating so-called E-pit charging stations at twelve highway locations and six urban hubs. Show #1442 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Thursday 21st April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VW'S NEW GROWTH PLAN WILL REDUCE SUPPLY CHAIN VULNERABILITY - Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess said the automaker's new growth plan would aim to reduce its vulnerability to the effects of global conflicts, such as supply chain disruption and rising prices, by divesting more power to its regions and brands. - Diess did not specify which political events he was referring to, but automakers have been hit hard by Russia's invasion of Ukraine as Western sanctions pushed up the price of energy and raw materials. - Diess said the automaker's board saw boosting its China business, growing software division Cariad and reorganizing its brand leadership structure as the most pressing issues facing the automaker. - "Our competitors are no longer called Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Motor Corporation or Stellantis, but Tesla, Foxconn, Apple, LG Electronics, Uber etc.," he said. Original Source : https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vws-new-growth-plan-will-reduce-supply-chain-vulnerability THE RAM 1500 EV HAS 1 MAJOR ADVANTAGE OVER OTHER ELECTRIC TRUCKS - Last week, Ram CEO Mike Koval confirmed the Ram 1500 EV concept at the New York International Auto Show. Ahead of the 2024 release, the company plans to reveal or preview the electric truck sometime this year. Those who are a part of the Ram Real Talk Tour might get a preview of the EV even before that. - Koval said to Automotive News that Ram has a master plan to give customers the right design for the future lineup. - Electric trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning and GMC Hummer EV Pickup will have been on the market for two years (if all goes as planned). The Chevrolet Silverado EV is slated for production in 2023, likely still beating the Ram by a whole year. - It can adjust based on customer feedback by releasing the Ram 1500 EV after the other trucks have been on the market for a bit. Ram will get to learn what people like and don't like and be able to modify certain things as necessary. Original Source : https://www.motorbiscuit.com/ram-1500-ev-1-major-advantage-over-other-electric-trucks/ TESLA (TSLA) EARNINGS Q1 2022 - Tesla just reported first-quarter earnings for 2022 and beat analysts' expectations on the top and bottom lines. - Automotive revenue reached $16.86 billion, up 87% from the same period last year. Automotive gross margins jumped to a record 32.9% with Tesla reporting gross profit of $5.54 billion in its main segment. Regulatory credits accounted for $679 million of automotive revenue for the quarter. - Revenue growth was driven in part by an increase in the number of cars Tesla delivered, and an increase in average sales prices, the company said in its shareholder deck. - “Our own factories have been running below capacity for several quarters,” Tesla said in its shareholder deck. The company did not give detailed guidance on deliveries going forward, but said it expects 50% annual growth on a multi-year basis, and warned that supply chain constraints are likely to continue through 2022. Musk also said that he believes inflation is worse than reported, and will continue through the year. Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/20/tesla-tsla-earnings-q1-2022.html HALF OF TESLAS PRODUCED IN Q1 HAD AN LFP BATTERY - At its Q1 2022 earnings call, Tesla announced that nearly half of all EVs it produced during the quarter were fitted with LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery cells that are free of nickel and cobalt. - While LFP batteries still use lithium, they come with a number of benefits over the standard NCA and NCM batteries that have traditionally been used in electric vehicles. - Tesla announced that almost half the cars that rolled out of its factories during the first three months of 2022 were equipped with LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries. In its official statement released on Wednesday, the company said that its decision to use the new technology is largely based on the fact that "diversification of battery chemistries is critical for long-term capacity growth." - The batteries are expected to help Tesla save on input costs and improve the bottom line as they are significantly cheaper than the Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide (NCA) cells Original Source : https://screenrant.com/tesla-increases-ev-production-lfp-battery/ TESLA SHOWS THAT ORDERS FOR ITS CARS SPIKED AFTER THE SUPER BOWL - his year's Super Bowl was packed with electric car ads from various automakers. Now that EVs are beginning to come into the mainstream, people are taking notice. Seeing major automakers supporting and promoting electric cars, not to mention their outstanding performance, gets people talking and searching the internet. - Apparently, it also moves people to order a Tesla. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/581249/tesla-orders-spiked-after-super-bowl-ads/ Tesla's solar business slumps as supply shortages take a toll - The company's solar energy deployments – including the solar roof made at Tesla's Buffalo plant – plunged by nearly half during the first quarter because of problems getting supplies from outside the United States. - Tesla said it installed 48 megawatts of solar energy generating capacity during the first three months of this year, 48% less than the 92 megawatts of solar capacity it installed during the same period last year. - Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he expects the supply shortages that affected the company's battery and solar energy businesses to be resolved. - Analysts believe Tesla has installed a relatively small number of solar roofs, so even a high percentage increase likely involves a modest number of additional deployments. Show #1441 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Wednesday 20th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. KIA REVEALS NIRO PRICING AS ‘ELECTRIC EXPERIENCE' DEALERSHIP TOUR GETS UNDERWAY - Kia has revealed the pricing of its electrified Niro crossover range as it unites its zero-emissions models at an ‘Electric Experience' dealership event touring the UK. - The EV starts from £34,995 for the ‘2', £37,745 for the mid-range ‘3' grade, and £40,495 for the top-spec ‘4' model. - Kia president and chief executive Paul Philpott recently told AM that the UK's full 2022 quota of EV6 crossovers had been sold already. - Customers can now pre-order their all-new Niro from today with the first UK customer deliveries expected to commence in early Q3. - Niro EV ‘2' buyers will see their car additionally pair an 8.0-inch touchscreen display with 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and also feature 17-inch alloy wheels, 11kW on-board charger, and a battery heating system. - the ‘4' grade feature a head-up display, twin 10.25-inch touchscreen and instrument cluster displays, heated rear seats and ventilated front seats, a power operated tailgate, electric sunroof, an uprated Harman Kardon premium sound system, driver's side memory seating, and front passenger lumbar support. The new Niro EV's 64.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack and a 204PS electric motor claims a 287-mile range and the ability to accelerate to 62mph in 7.8 seconds. Original Source : https://www.am-online.com/news/manufacturer/2022/04/20/kia-reveals-niro-pricing-as-electric-experience-dealership-tour-gets-underway BMW I7 ELECTRIC CAR REVEALED - the 7 Series is the brand's showpiece for luxury and technology. The i7 is the electric version of a new generation of the BMW 7 Series flagship unveiled on Wednesday. - With a starting price of $119,300, the all-wheel-drive 536 horsepower i7 xDrive60 will be able to go 300 miles on a full charge, which is less than the competing Mercedes EQS or Lucid Air. - While those other luxury brands' electric vehicles are based on dedicated EV chassis with little relationship to their gas-powered models, BMW emphasizes adaptable engineering as its edge. - BMW has engineered all its new models so they can be built with internal combustion engines, fully electric power or as plug-in hybrids that combine both electric and gas power. BMW executives insist this is not just a matter of fitting batteries and electric motors into cars that were intended to have gas engines. Instead, these vehicles have been designed, from the outset, to be built with any of these drive systems. - BMW chairman Oliver Zipse said, is that customers needn't choose between two completely different models when deciding whether they want an electric or gas-powered car. They can just decide they want to buy a BMW 7 Series, then choose whether they want the gasoline or electric version, - The downside of a common engineering platform is that, to enable both electric and gasoline power, designers need compromises. - BMW 7 Series buyers can get an optional 31-inch high-resolution video screen that folds down from the roof to provide entertainment for back seat passengers. - The 7 Series can automatically drive itself into and out of parking spaces even with the driver outside the vehicle using a smartphone app. It can also drive itself through a pre-programmed course, such as around pylons in a parking garage, on its own, a feature somewhat similar to Tesla's Summon mode - A sophisticated "head up display" which displays data in the car's windscreen can align images and text so they appear as if laid over roads and other features in the real world. Original Source : https://edition.cnn.com/2022/04/20/business/bmw-i7/index.html 2022 BMW I7 ELECTRIC CAR REVEALED: PRICE, SPECS AND RELEASE DATE - Arriving first in xDrive60 form, the new i7 will be powered by front and rear-mounted electric motors that together produce 537bhp and 549lb ft of torque, propelling the car to 62mph in just 4.7 sec. Power is drawn from a 101.7kWh battery, giving the i7 an official range of up to 388 miles. That's significantly more than the figure for the Audi e-tron GT (298 miles), but less than the Mercedes EQS 450+ can officially do (an impressive 453 miles). - The i7 will have a maximum charging speed of up to 195kW from a DC charger, and if you can find a suitably powerful charging point, approximately 100 miles of range can be added in just 10 minutes - In the back seats, passengers will be just as well looked after as those in the front, because all models will be long-wheelbase variants, so legroom in the back should be plentiful. What's also plentiful in the back is technology: each rear passenger will have a 5.5in touchscreen to operate the audio system, seat adjustment settings, climate controls, and ambient lighting. Original Source : https://www.whatcar.com/news/2022-bmw-i7-electric-car-revealed-price-specs-and-release-date/n23842 2023 BMW 7 SERIES AND I7 EV REVEALED: YOU CHOOSE BIG V8 OR BATTERY POWER - Every 2023 7 Series gets a standard four-corner air suspension system with automatic self-leveling and electronically controlled dampers. The adaptive suspension lowers the 7 Series by 0.4 inches in Sport mode or raises it up to 0.8 inches for rough roads and small obstacles. Furthermore, the i7 automatically lowers a bit above 75 mph for aerodynamics. And with the addition of integral adaptive steering, which gives the car more precision at higher speeds, the 7 Series has rear-wheel steering at a rate of up to 3.5 degrees. - Front and center is the new Curved Display, which is a single continuous piece of glass that houses two plus-sized screens: a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a 14.9-inch central touchscreen. And a new Interaction Bar, exclusive to the 7, features a crystalline surface with touch-capacitive controls for things like ventilation and climate control functions. Original Source : https://www.motor1.com/news/580864/2023-bmw-7-series-i7-debut/ 2023 MERCEDES-BENZ EQS SUV: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW - Mercedes-Benz's first all-electric, U.S.-bound SUV, the 2023 EQS SUV, was revealed in a press release Tuesday. Hot on the heels of the EQS sedan, the SUV gets the same egg-like styling as the electric S-Class, along with a similar 107.8 kWh battery setup and dual-motor drivetrain. Opt for the most expensive EQS 580 4Matic, and you're looking at 536 hp and 633 lb-ft of torque going to all four wheels. - Mercedes will sell two different EQS SUV trims: the EQS 450+ and the EQS 580 4Matic. Both get the same 107.8-kWh battery in the floor, but the 450+ gets a single motor for the rear wheels, while the 580 gets two motors; one at the front and one at the back. So if you want all-wheel drive, you'll need to step up to the 580. - And because rear axle steering up to 10 degrees is standard, expect some proper agility from the all-electric Benz. - The EQS SUV will be built at Mercedes's Tuscaloosa, Alabama factory thanks to a new battery systems plant in nearby Bibb County. Deliveries are set to begin in late 2022, though the company has yet to release pricing. Considering this is essentially a direct competitor to the Model X and the iX, expect a starting price in the low $100,000 range. Show #1440 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Tuesday 19th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. APPLE RANKS BEHIND DISNEY AND TESLA IN NEW BRAND INTIMACY SURVEY  - In MBLM's Brand Intimacy 2022 Study, Apple has ranked third in how consumers bond with the brands they use and love, staying behind Tesla (second place) and Disney (first place). Here are the top findings of the report. - According to the study, three technology brands are featured in the top 10 (Apple, Tesla, and Android), up from two in 2021. - According to the survey, Apple continues to dominate stages, which identify “the depth and degree of intensity in the relationship between a consumer and a brand. There are three stages of intimacy with criteria for each progression: sharing, bonding, and fusing.” - Here are the top 10 brands, including their scores: Disney – 68.1 Tesla – 67.4 Apple – 65.3 Sony – 65.0 YouTube – 64.3 Original Source : https://9to5mac.com/2022/04/19/apple-ranks-behind-disney-and-tesla-in-new-brand-intimacy-survey/ FORD COPIES TESLA AND ADDS VIDEO GAMES TO INFOTAINMENT SYSTEMS - it sounds like Ford may be following Tesla's lead and bringing games to its new electric truck – but you'll only be able to play them when parked. - But the rollout was marred by a report from the New York Times that quoted one Tesla Model 3 owner who found that they could play the games while driving. - the NHTSA soon stepped in and ordered that Elon Musk and Tesla issue a software update to disable the ability to play games while driving. - The Blue Oval is preparing to rollout its all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck. And, ahead of its release, Darren Palmer, vice president global EV programs at Ford, has teased a glimpse of things to come in the new truck's infotainment system. - While Tesla initially had no processes in place to make sure people weren't gaming while driving, a Ford spokesperson has confirmed to Jalopnik that the “games are only active when the vehicle is in park.” Original Source : https://jalopnik.com/ford-copies-tesla-s-gimmicky-games-in-the-f-150-lightni-1848807655 DEALERS AND OWNERS OFFER "USED" EVS AT MASSIVE PREMIUMS TO NEW CAR PRICE - The scarcity of new electric vehicles coming into Australia has led some car dealers and EV owners to ask as much as $25,000 more for their “used” electric cars than the price of a new car. In some cases, drivers are attempting to sell their vehicles before they've even taken delivery. - One of these examples is a Hyundai customer who has listed their all-wheel-drive Ioniq 5 – which sells from $75,900 new – on Carsguide for $94,300. According to the listing, they received the vehicle at the end of March after initially being told it would not arrive until June, and had bought another EV in the meantime. - A second all-wheel-drive Ioniq 5 has been listed by Lavender Bay showroom Classic Throttle Shop for just shy of $100,000. - As RenewEconomy's David Leitch argues, it is average Australians that are paying the price for Australia's vehicle emissions policy vacuum, and it is absolutely no surprise that enterprising players are seeking to zero in on profits. - a Tesla customer is looking to sell their Model 3 Performance – which Tesla sells for just under $100,000 driveaway depending on your state or territory – for $115,000. And it hasn't even been delivered yet. Ever since, the carmaker has been looking for a way to revitalize the iconic design. - The MX-30 was Mazda's first mass-produced electric car, released in 2020. Sales have struggled to take off, however, due to its short cruising range. It can travel about 250 km on a single charge, significantly less than other carmakers' EVs. Show #1439 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Monday 18th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. BMW BELIEVES TESLA HAS LOST ITS UNIQUE SELLING POINT - With 936,172 cars delivered in 2021 and 310,048 units only in the first quarter of 2022, it's safe to say Tesla is doing better than ever. However, BMW Group sales chief Pieter Nota believes Elon Musk's company has lost its USP - “Tesla had a unique selling point for quite some time. That's over.” - Later this week, the i7 will receive its world premiere as a response to the Mercedes EQS and Model S. The end of 2022 will bring us the iX1 to serve as the EV equivalent of the next X1 compact crossover. Come 2023, the smaller i5 will follow as an electric variant of the next-generation 5 Series Sedan. The greater BMW Group is going to roll out the MINI Countryman EV and Rolls-Royce Spectre next year. - For the time being, the i4 and iX are the commercial hits for the Bavarians. We mustn't omit the iX3, but the company has decided against bringing it to the United States. - Indeed, Nota mentioned dealers have hundreds of orders for the two and the waiting time has increased to six months. - The automotive conglomerate will kick its electric efforts into higher gear in 2025 with the launch of Neue Klasse, a dedicated EV platform. This time it's more in line with what the US wants: an SUV. - EQS SUV is to the sedan EQS what the GLS is to the regular S-Class — an upright take on its ultra high-end model. It was unveiled recently in Germany - In addition to having room for seven, the electric SUV has an off-road mode and special running boards that help reduce drag. - While Mercedes is mum on pricing and range details for the US, we do know that its European range will be "up to 600 kilometers" based on the WLTP standard, which should make the range top out at a shade over 300 miles in the US' more stringent EPA ratings. Show #1438 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Sunday 17th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VOLKSWAGEN CEO HERBERT DIESS ON 60 MINUTES - CBS NEWS - Lesley Stahl: Volkswagen pulled out of Russia very early. I wonder how hard a decision that was for you. Herbert Diess: It is quite a hard decision for us because we have about 7,000 people -- loyal people working for us in Russia. We have three plants there. We have customers since many years, so it's very difficult decision. But strong sanctions are probably the only measures we have currently, because what we see in Europe is really an appalling war. - Lesley Stahl: You know, in the United States, the best-selling vehicles are trucks. As far as I know, you do not have plans to make an electric truck for the American market.      Herbert Diess: Not yet Lesley Stahl: Not yet? - Herbert Diess: Yeah. It is a big challenge. And historically there haven't been too many cases where the successful companies in the old world could demonstrate that they are still successful in the new world. Lesley Stahl: And you have so many competitors in the electrification area. Herbert Diess: Yeah. It's really the new competitors which are especially challenging for us, no, coming from software background, battery background, Apple being said to entering at some stage, no? Those are probably the competitors we have to take most seriously. Original Source : https://www.cbsnews.com/news/electric-cars-volkswagen-herbert-diess-60-minutes-2022-04-17/ RIVIAN CEO WARNS CHIP SNAG 'APPETIZER' FOR BATTERY SHORTAGE - Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe warned that a shortage of electric-car batteries could soon eclipse the issues that the automotive industry has faced from the computer chip shortage. - "Semiconductors are a small appetizer to what we are about to feel on battery cells over the next two decades," Scaringe said, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The Rivian CEO made the comment while giving reporters a tour of the company's plant in Normal, Illinois. - "Put very simply, all the world's cell production combined represents well under 10% of what we will need in 10 years," Scaringe said, according to The Journal. "Meaning, 90% to 95% of the supply chain does not exist," he added. - Last year, the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) released a report that found that battery cell production will not be able to meet demand until 2030, causing an estimated shortage of over 18.7 million electric cars between 2022 and 2029. - "I'm on the phone with semiconductor supplier CEOs every day," Scaringe said, according to report from Axios. "It's a day-in, day-out battle for allocation and the number we get is precisely equal to the number of vehicles we build," he added. Audi previewed the EV's sleek design with a concept, and it appears as if the production version will retain the majority of the styling. Our second batch of A6 E-Tron spy shots captures the electric sedan testing at the famous Nurburgring race track. - The new photos continue to show the Audi covered in a full-body camouflage wrap. - The new electric sedan will ride on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture jointly developed between Porsche and Audi. While we know the car's platform, we don't have any powertrain details. Audi previewed the A6 E-Tron with a concept that packed a dual-motor setup making 470 horsepower (350 kilowatts) that could send it to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in less than four seconds. The PPE architecture will also underpin the upcoming electric Porsche Macan and the Audi Q6 E-Tron crossover. In Q1, 9,470 units of all types were delivered, which is 4% more than a year ago. - The Taycan family accounts for 13.8% of the total Porsche global volume and its sales exceed the 911: The Porsche Taycan is the third most popular model in the lineup:  Cayenne: 19,029 Macan: 18,329 Taycan (all versions): 9,470 (up 4%) Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/580298/porsche-sales-electric-cars-2022q1/ TESLA WILL NO LONGER INCLUDE MOBILE CONNECTORS WITH EVERY CAR - Tesla has stopped including its mobile connector with new car purchases and will instead sell its Gen 2 (Level 1) bundle separately for a lower $200 price, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed in a series of tweets. The mobile connector bundle comes with an adapter that allows drivers to charge their cars from a standard 110v household outlet, with other adapters available for purchase separately. - In a reply to a user's reaction to the situation, Musk confirmed that the company will no longer include the Gen 2 mobile connector with new car purchases. “Usage statistics were super low, so seemed wasteful,” Musk explained, adding that Tesla “will be including more plug adapters with the mobile connector kit” in the future. It's unclear which adapters Tesla will start including with the kit. - The Gen 2 mobile connector is still listed as costing $275 on Tesla's site, and you couldn't purchase one even if you wanted to; the mobile connector is currently out of stock, and the same goes for the Gen 1 connector. That said, it's unclear how long either accessory has been out of stock or whether a supply chain shortage is contributing to Tesla's decision. The Forbes report indicates Tesla had only applied for a “small portion” of the money to build its first four stations, which would also accept non-Tesla EVs, much like a “pilot” program the company has started to test in Europe. The proposal also calls for zero-emissions sales to account for 68% of total sales by 2030. - The board is expected to vote on the proposal in August. Show #1434 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Wednesday 13th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. REPORT: MADE-IN-TEXAS TESLA MODEL Y STARTS AT $59,990 - According to Drive Tesla Canada, new reports - based on Reddit posts and internal email sent to Tesla employees a week ago - reveal that Tesla will offer the first MIT cars at a price of $59,990 (USD), which would be some $3,000 less than the current price of the Model Y Long Range AWD. As we understand, it was also the price for those employees. - It's good news that the price is lower, but let's not forget that the new MIT version has also a slightly lower EPA range - 279 miles (449 km) vs 330 miles (531 km), assuming the same 19" wheels. Also, the acceleration is a bit slower - 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds instead of 4.8 seconds. - Some of the numbers of the new Model Y were reportedly noted in the Tesla's website code In the comments: “Just looking at a couple factors, 85% of the range for 95% of the price doesn't seem like a good deal.” “The ID.4 has 280 miles of range for almost 1/2 the price.” with tax credit. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/579535/report-mit-tesla-modely-59990-price/ TESLA WILL RELEASE A CHEAPER MODEL Y WITH BIGGER BATTERIES SOON - This Model Y also includes a few features not seen on any previous trim level, such as a magnetic center armrest and a parcel shelf. Tesla reportedly delivered a handful of these EVs to workers at its "Giga Rodeo" event in Texas last week. - The 4680 cells are twice as large as Tesla's existing units, but they have five times the capacity. That lets Tesla either extend the range of its vehicles or use fewer batteries to maintain the same range, potentially shrinking costs. In the new Model Y version, they're implemented in a structural battery pack that should reduce complexity and weight, further improving efficiency. Original Source : https://www.engadget.com/tesla-model-y-standard-range-awd-new-battery-152038143.html TESLA CHANGES OFF-PEAK HOURS AT SUPERCHARGERS IN CALIFORNIA TO ENCOURAGE OWNERS TO CHARGE LATER - Tesla has announced that it is changing the timeframe of its off-peak hours at Superchargers in California to encourage owners to charge their cars later. - It was only a few years ago that Tesla owners didn't have to pay anything to stop and charge at a Supercharger station. In the early days of Tesla and electric vehicles, it made sense in order to create a seamless experience and encourage ease of travel as many were still on the fence about electric vehicles. - This week, Tesla announced an important change to its off-peak hours in California, its biggest market: - Starting April 12, 2022, off-peak hours will change at California Supercharger locations. Charge for less at select Superchargers before 11 AM and after 9 PM. Tap the Supercharger map pin in your in-car touchscreen to view specific rates and eligible sites. Navigate to your destination using Trip Planner and your battery will automatically precondition before you arrive. - Rates are different depending on the station, but they can often charge around $0.48 per kWh during peak hours versus $0.24 during off-peak hours. Tesla requires a $5,000 credit card payment for the Roadster due on the spot and a $45,000 wire transfer ten days after the initial order. The $5,000 credit card payment is fully refundable. Tesla does not state whether the $45,000 wire transfer is refundable, but reservations will not be final until the wire transfer is officially received. - The next-generation Tesla Roadster debuted in November 2017 Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/2023-tesla-roadster-reservations-reopen/ FIRST DRIVE REVIEW: 2023 TOYOTA BZ4X EV IS SET AS THE SIDESHOW BUT UPSTAGES HYBRID HEADLINERS - it surprised us to hear that Toyota only plans to deliver about 7,000 BZ4Xs through the end of 2022 in the U.S., with an emphasis on California ZEV states at first but no guarantee the pace will accelerate. While Ford looks at 200,000 Mach-Es for 2023 split between the U.S. and Europe, and VW eyes 100,000 ID.4s in the U.S. in the next year or two? Record-scratch moment. - Toyota has owned California in hybrid sales, and it's hard to imagine it's not looking at the 60,394 Tesla Model Y SUVs registered in the Golden State alone in 2021 and seeing that it could catch up. - To put it in context a bit, that's a slower U.S. sales pace than the plug-in hybrid RAV4 Prime. - Both of the plug-ins are eligible for the full $7,500 EV tax credit amount for just a few more months. And for the time being, they both upstage those models without charge ports. Sorry, Toyota. Original Source : https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1135571_first-drive-review-2023-toyota-bz4x-ev-is-positioned-as-the-sideshow-but-upstages-hybrid-headliners 2023 TOYOTA BZ4X FIRST DRIVE REVIEW | TOYOTA'S FIRST REAL EV - Last summer, a whopping 40% of would-be electric vehicle buyers said they had heard of Toyota's EV. Of that, 21% said they considered buying it. Funny thing was, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X wouldn't be revealed for months, and we're just reviewing it now. In other words, all those people were keen on a car that didn't exist … which is more than those who had heard of the Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf, cars that actually existed for years. - there is very little revolutionary about Toyota's first from-scratch EV. You won't see any bladder-busting range numbers, wait-saving charge times or neck-snapping 0-60 sprints. This sucker is aimed straight at the average new car buyer rather than EV enthusiasts. You know, like the people who thought it was already on sale. - Well, the front-wheel-drive bX4Z actually has a different battery pack than the all-wheel-drive twins. Their capacities are similar at 71.4 kWh for FWD and 72.8 kWh for AWD, but they're in fact different packs produced by different suppliers. Why? The answer is demand, as in Toyota couldn't get enough of a single battery to supply all 13,000 or so Toyabaru EVs it intends to build for 2023. Original Source : https://www.autoblog.com/2022/04/12/2023-toyota-bz4x-first-drive/ SHORT SUPPLY MEANS A RIVIAN TRUCK NOW COSTS FERRARI MONEY Original Source : https://www.motorbiscuit.com/short-supply-means-a-rivian-truck-now-costs-ferrari-money/ TRUCK COMPANIES' ELECTRIC ENTHUSIASM DOESN'T EXTEND TO POLICY - Some of the world's largest truck engine manufacturers say they're all-in on electric vehicles. So why is their main trade group still lobbying against them? - Volvo said it would try to sell 50 percent of its heavy-duty trucks as EVs by 2030, and the company is trumpeting new models and sales figures. Daimler is touting investments in truck charging infrastructure along the West Coast and a million miles driven in its electric Freightliners. Navistar is making the case that its electric school buses can help slash greenhouse gases. - Yet the trade group they all belong to, the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association, is arguing that federal and state rules intended to boost numbers of zero-emission trucks are too onerous. - EMA's president, Jed Mandel, said the demand isn't necessarily there. “Their customers haven't bought them yet, and there's no guarantee they will,” he said of Volvo and Daimler's plans. Mandel also argued that EPA's proposal creates more regulatory uncertainty because the agency had already settled on greenhouse gas standards through model year 2027 under the Obama administration, which he said are already “very challenging.” - Only about 6,000 of the roughly 4.5 million medium- and heavy-duty trucks on U.S. roads last year were battery-powered, according to ACT Research, a firm that does analysis and forecasting for the commercial vehicle industry. Most of them were buses, which typically make shorter trips than trucks. Show #1432 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's  Monday 11th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. GIVE AND TAKE: THE TAYCAN AS A BUFFER FOR THE POWER GRID - In future, when electric cars are not being driven, they could also feed energy back into the public power grid. As part of a wider pool of vehicles, they could effectively act as a power plant and help supply what is known as balancing power – electrical power that balances out fluctuations in the power grid. - A realistic pilot test conducted by Porsche, the grid operator TransnetBW and consulting firm Intelligent Energy System Services (IE2S), has demonstrated that electrical balancing power can be stored in the high-voltage batteries of an intelligent swarm of electric cars. Five series-production Taycan were connected to the power grid via the Porsche Home Energy Manager (HEM) both in a domestic environment and under laboratory conditions. Experts from Porsche Engineering had already adapted the software of these control centres beforehand for the field test. - With the expansion of renewable energies, balancing power will become even more important in the future for secure grid operation. This is because the power grid must always be stable, even though the wind and sun are not always producing consistent amounts of energy. If power grids are not stabilised at a constant 50 Hertz power frequency, there is a risk of power cuts. Until now, conventional power plants in particular have been responsible for cushioning these fluctuations. Using high-voltage batteries as a buffer would be a win-win situation: drivers of electric cars could be financially compensated for their contribution to balancing power. - During the pilot test, detailed measurements showed that the target values from the grid control system were met. This applied to both the primary (FCR: frequency containment reserve) and secondary (aFRR: automatic frequency restoration reserve) balancing power. Show #1430 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Saturday 9th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. TESLA CEO ELON MUSK HOSTS 'CYBER RODEO' PARTY TO OPEN AUSTIN FACTORY - On Thursday night, Tesla CEO Elon Musk spoke at a grand opening event for the electric vehicle maker's new $1.1 billion factory near the Austin airport in Texas. - At the event, he spoke about how massive the new factory is, and teased products that are still in development, including the Cybertruck, and a robotaxi that he promised would look quite futuristic. - Tesla aims to make 500,000 units of the Model Y in a single year in Austin - “In trailing twelve months, we've delivered over a million cars worldwide,” Musk said. “There's still a long way to go.” - “We're aiming to go to wide beta for almost all Full Self-Driving customers in North America this year,” - Musk said on Thursday night that the Model Y vehicles being produced in Texas feature what's known as a “structural pack,” meaning the cells in the cars' high voltage battery packs carry the load of the vehicle. Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/07/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-hosts-cyber-rodeo-party-to-open-austin-factory.html TESLA'S 4680 CELLS & STRUCTURAL PACK REVEALED AT CYBER RODEO - While Tesla CEO Elon Musk did reveal a few juicy bits of information at Tesla's Cyber Rodeo delivery party last evening, there wasn't a whole lot of "new material," and future plans, details, and dates were lacking. That said, tweets and videos from fans, owners, and investors attending the event delivered more compelling information. - Tesla had several unique displays prepared for the event, including one that revealed production-level 4680 battery cells manufactured at Giga Texas. - The text on the hanging metal plaque above reads:  “Made at Gigafactory Texas, our new tabless 4680 cell lowers the cost per kilowatt hour. We have everything we need under one roof to produce and assemble the first high-volume structural battery pack, using our fully integrated process. The structural pack greatly reduces the number of parts used in both the battery pack and the car, allowing our pack manufacturing line to be less than half the size of previous factories." Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/578801/tesla-structural-pack-4680-cells-unveiled-cyber-rodeo/ TESLA OFFICIALLY OPENS TEXAS GIGAFACTORY - The milestone was achieved less than two years after Musk declared that Austin would be the site of the company's next Gigafactory and less than one year after Tesla officially moved its headquarters to Texas from California. - Tesla has said it expects to make 1.5 million vehicles in 2022, after producing slightly less than 1 million vehicles last year - The company has said it will hire up to 5,000 workers at an average salary of $47,147, with entry-level positions starting at $35,000. Today, Tesla employs about 10,000 people at its only US car plant in Fremont. Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2022/4/8/23008731/tesla-texas-gigafactory-open-cybertruck-elon-musk TESLA WILL SELL ITS CYBERTRUCK NEXT YEAR, ELON MUSK SAYS - Tesla will begin producing its much-delayed electric pickup, the Cybertruck, next year along with numerous other new products, Elon Musk, the carmaker's chief executive, said late Thursday. - Tesla's chief executive has a long history of promising products that materialize later than he said they would or not at all, but his timeline for the Cybertruck is more definite than the one he gave to investors in January, when he said delivery in 2023 was “most likely.” - Delays in producing the Cybertruck have allowed rivals to come to market sooner with pickups, one of the most popular types of vehicle in the United States. Ford Motor is expected to begin delivering the Lightning, a battery-powered version of its F-150, this summer. Rivian's electric pickup went on sale late last year to rave reviews, but the company has had trouble ramping up production, a common problem for new car companies. - “This year is all about scaling up,” Mr. Musk said. “Next year, there is going to be a massive wave of new products.” Original Source : https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/08/business/tesla-cybertruck-elon-musk.html TESLA DELIVERS FIRST MODEL Y VEHICLES WITH 4680 BATTERIES FROM GIGA TEXAS - On Friday, April 8, Elon Musk officially announced that the first production Model Y units were delivered. He thanked the Tesla team for their hard work. A few of the new Model Y owners already shared their joy with the community online. - Tesla technician Regan Janssen announced that she received the first Model Y with 4680 battery cells produced in Giga Texas on LinkedIn. Janssen happens to be an Engineering Process Technician at Tesla. She started her Tesla career just last month. Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-texas-model-y-4680-battery/ CATL PAVES THE WAY FOR TESLA TO BEGIN BUILDING LFP-BASED VEHICLES AT GIGA BERLIN - CATL's $1.8 billion investment in Germany will supply carmakers in Germany with LFP batteries. Although CATL does not name any specific company, Tesla is probably the only carmaker in Germany that could use enough LFP batteries to justify the investment. Other carmakers, like Volkswagen, have agreements in place with Korean battery makers like SK Innovation and LG Energy Solutions while also investing in battery technologies on their own. - The initial capacity for the CATL battery factory is 8 GWh per year which is enough for 100,000 electric vehicles provided they have an 80 kWh battery. In the case of the Chinese Model Y with an LFP battery (Standard Range), the battery capacity sits at 60 kWh, so CATL would be able to equip more than 133,000 cars. - The first German-made batteries should go to partners by the end of the year when the plant should employ 1,500 workers. Electric vehicle owner Max Wilkinson - who is also a Cheltenham Councillor - recently bought a four-year-old hybrid Mini Countryman. He went home - but returned two hours later by which time the hybrid Mini was about half-charged. A week later Max received a penalty notice saying he'd been fined £90. Mr Wilkinson has paid the fine and doesn't dispute it. But he does think it doesn't quite make sense to restrict car charging to 90 minutes as well. - He said: “It seems illogical that quite a lot of EV and hybrid owners won't be allowed to spend enough time in the car park to get a full charge.” Email me any feedback to: hello@evnewsdaily.com It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.
