Auckland needs sporting events. As many as possible. As big and flash and shiny as they come. The oft rumoured State of Origin has been teasing the populace for many a year. Rumours are still thick on the ground; this time it's thought that the announcement will be as early as this month. Great if it happens, but it will be a one off I'd suggest, great for a stellar tourist weekend for the 09, but not the long term locked down major sporting event the city yearns for. We have the ASB Classic. An annual tennis-fest to be proud of, long may it be a staple of the summer. The annual All Black fixture at Eden Park. Then crickets. The insects, not the test version which the city is incapable of hosting. It's hardly big or shiny either right? I'm not sure it's sport, but the hugely popular Black Clash cricket sportainment event is in the Bay. No big motorsport event in AK, although there were attempts at bringing Formula E here, but that got quashed before it had a chance to plug in. Supercars? Taupo and Christchurch. The World Rally Championship has been and gone; it is now a rarely realised pipe dream. Sevens rugby is long dead. Aotearoa's major golf tournament is in Queenstown. PDC darts? At least we've pinched that back from the Tron. Surfing's World League? Raglan. No America's Cup, thanks Grant. All of this points to one thing, the Auckland leg of the Sail GP. If the government and Auckland city don't fight tooth and nail to keep this rapidly expanding global event here on the sparkling Waitemata, somebody will need to get in the sea. These opportunities to host a major sporting event like this as a rare as a summer without poo on our beaches. Secure it and secure it long term. During Race Industry Week by EPARTRADE, Rodi Basso, Founder & CEO of the E1 Series, shares the inside story behind the world's first all-electric powerboat racing championship and explains how E1 is shaping the future of sustainable water mobility.Born during the COVID pandemic and developed in collaboration with Alejandro Agag (Formula E, Extreme E), E1 was conceived not just as a racing series, but as a global technology laboratory for electric propulsion on water. Backed by Basso's extensive experience at Formula One, McLaren, and Magneti Marelli, the championship secured a landmark 25-year exclusivity agreement with the UIM, officially launching the World Electric Powerboat Championship in Monaco. At the heart of E1 is the revolutionary RaceBird — a purpose-built electric raceboat that uses hydrofoils to lift the hull above the water, dramatically reducing drag. Despite water being nearly 800 times denser than air, the RaceBird achieves exceptional efficiency, with the battery accounting for less than 20% of total weight and top speeds approaching 52 knots.
Two years after the transition from Honda Performance Development (HPD) to Honda Racing Corporation USA (HRC US), Honda's North American racing operation has entered a powerful new era of global alignment, advanced technology, and talent development.During Race Industry Week by EPARTRADE, Kelvin Fu, Vice President of HRC US, explains how the move to a unified global HRC structure has unlocked new technical collaboration with Japan, accelerated innovation, and expanded Honda's racing footprint across IMSA, IndyCar, Formula 1, and beyond.

Firstly, apologies for the difference in sound this week!

A single soft line on The Body Shop catalogue haunted copywriter Vikki Ross for six months. Years later, another forgettable line slipped through and ended up across London on billboards. LUKE BROWNING TO HIT THE TRACK IN ABU DHABI FP1 AND YOUNG DRIVER TEST Atlassian Williams Racing is pleased to share that Williams Racing Academy Driver Luke Browning will drive Alex Albon's FW47 in the first free practice session at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and will participate in the end-of-season Young Driver Test. Luke joined the Williams Racing Driver Academy in April 2023 following his stand-out 2022 season where he secured the GB3 Championship and won the 2022 Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award. Since joining the Academy he has continued this upward trajectory, winning the Macau Grand Prix in 2023, also taking pole position and the fastest lap, and finishing the 2024 FIA Formula 3 season in third with two race wins and a podium in Monaco. As part of the Williams Racing Driver Academy's proud tradition of giving young talent a path into F1, Luke has regularly driven in the Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) and simulator programmes with the aim of preparing him for the future. He has balanced this with a successful FIA Formula 2 campaign, currently occupying third position in the standings and going into the final two races of the season in a fierce battle for the title. Luke Browning: “It's going to be an unforgettable weekend in Abu Dhabi fighting for the Formula 2 title while getting back behind the wheel of the FW47, and it's a challenge I'm going to relish. The Young Driver Test will give me a final opportunity to help the team prepare for 2026 and I'm looking forward to being part of a Formula 1 weekend for the last time this season. Thank you to everyone at the Driver Academy and Williams for the trust once again.” Sven Smeets, Sporting Director, Atlassian Williams Racing: “Luke's development continues to impress us, and we are looking forward to closing the season with him behind the wheel of the FW47. We have an incredibly talented group of drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy, and it is important for us to give them the opportunity to progress as they move up the ladder. These final sessions of the season will give Luke another valuable chance to learn from Alex and Carlos, the wider team, and further embed with our trackside operation as he looks towards a bright future.” Mighty Sunbeam 1000 HP to Make Post-Restoration Debut at 75th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Harry Segrave beside the Sunbeam 1000 HP. (Photo: Courtesy of the National Motor. Museum) PEBBLE BEACH, CALIFORNIA (November 12, 2025) — The mighty Sunbeam 1000 HP, the first car to achieve a land speed record of 200 mph, has been asleep for over 90 years. But a team of restorers at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, England, is now in the process of gently waking this giant—and if all goes as planned, the restored beast will make its US debut at the 2026 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance before attempting a centennial run at Daytona the following spring. “The process of restoring a one-off car like this takes real dedication,” noted Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “There is no pattern to be followed. It takes time and research, effort and expertise. We are thrilled to know that the National Motor Museum intends to send the restored car to Pebble Beach, to share with enthusiasts here.” The Sunbeam 1000 HP was built to compete in the race for speed. The 100 mph barrier was first broken in 1904, and then it took more than two decades to reach 150 mph—a record Malcolm Campbell achieved in July of 1925 at the wheel of a Sunbeam 350 HP. The Sunbeam 1000 HP, crafted around two of the marque's powerful 22.4-liter Matabele aero engines placed to the fore and aft of the vehicle, came into being less than two years later and proved to be revolutionary. Driving it on the smooth sands of Daytona Beach on March 29, 1927, Harry Segrave recorded a speed of 203.79 mph. “This car has been at Beaulieu since before I was born and feels like a member of the family, but one I never expected to run again,” said Ralph, Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. “Watching the restoration take place has been fascinating as it has revealed so much I never knew about the car. It will be quite a thrill to have the car at Pebble Beach and is a great opportunity for us to wave the flag for the National Motor Museum!” The car's restoration is now well underway. The rear engine has already been disassembled, re-machined, restored, and refitted into the frame—and it was first fired up before an adoring crowd at the Beaulieu International Autojumble in early September. The museum team is now focused on restoring the front engine. When that, too, is back together and in place, the bodywork, which has already been restored, will be reinstalled. “Over the last three and a half years, the Museum's team have worked tirelessly to make the mighty Sunbeam 1000 HP roar again, with help from a wide range of supporters, stakeholders and heritage engineering specialists,” said Jon Murden, Chief Executive of the National Motor Museum. “Having experienced the first of the car's remarkable engines running once more, we are all now thrilled at the prospect of the Sunbeam returning to the United States for the first time in a century.” John, the second Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, was a motoring pioneer, who campaigned for the rights of early motorists. In the 1950s, his son Edward founded what is now the National Motor Museum to honor him, and that museum shares a long history with the Pebble Beach Concours. Edward first showed a car—his 1913 Alfonso Hispano-Suiza—at Pebble Beach in 1981, and the following year, he donated the Montagu of Beaulieu Trophy, which the Concours presents annually to the best British car shown on its competition field. Ralph, the current Lord Montagu, was in attendance at the Concours this year. Episode 332 For only the second time, the genome of an ancient Denisovan has been sequenced - thanks to the discovery of a 200,000-year-old tooth found in a Siberian cave. This ancient member of the human family has long been a mystery, so this genome is being described as a bombshell moment, revealing an early stage of Denisovan history. We explore how this reshapes our understanding about the origins of our species. Some 95 per cent of us have a dormant virus, lurking in our bodies - waiting to strike when the moment's right. Epstein-Barr virus causes glandular fever - also known as mono or kissing disease - but only in a small number of people. Though new evidence is showing that even dormant viruses may still cause long term health problems. Formula E electric race cars may have surpassed their fossil fuel counterparts. From greater efficiency to faster acceleration, this is a big turning point for the sport - but they don't have the edge on F1 cars in all areas just yet. We find out where they're winning and where they're falling behind - and how this could translate to better electric road cars for us. And the legendary science writer Bill Bryson joins the team to discuss the process of revising his bestselling book A Short History of Nearly Everything. He explores some of the most fascinating (and surprising) facts he's had to update in the 20 years since the book came out. Chapters: (00:00) Intro (01:45) Second Denisovan genome sequenced (11:15) We all have dormant viruses that are causing diseases (18:37) Are Formula E cars faster than F1? In this conversation, copywriter and brand voice specialist Vikki Ross returns to discuss the intersection of authentic creativity and AI anxiety in the modern marketing landscape. She shares her approach to finding distinctive voices for major brands like JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) and Formula E, emphasizing the importance of simplicity, curiosity, and human connection in copywriting. Ross candidly addresses the fears surrounding AI in creative industries, arguing that the noise about AI replacing copywriters is louder than the reality, while acknowledging that brands and creatives need to focus on what makes human communication irreplaceable: genuine understanding, emotional connection, and lived experience. The discussion explores how brands can navigate an increasingly fragmented and polarized world, the dangers of chasing viral trends over consistent authenticity, and why showing support for causes requires action beyond logo changes. Ross reveals her "nosiness" as a professional superpower—immersing herself completely in clients' worlds by experiencing their products, researching their audiences, and understanding their competition. She advocates for practical, accessible brand guidelines that empower non-copywriters to maintain consistent voices across organizations, proving that simplicity is the outcome of reduction and deep understanding rather than minimal effort.Key Takeaways"AI cannot replicate the human heart—creative work that moves people comes from lived experience and genuine emotional understandingTrue curiosity ("nosiness") means immersing yourself completely in a brand's world, experiencing their products as consumers do, and understanding their audience deeplySimplicity in brand voice is achieved through reduction and testing, not minimalism—it's the outcome of hard work, not the starting pointA free focus group exists 24/7 on social media—ignoring how audiences naturally express themselves about your brand is foolishBrands should avoid sounding like wallpaper—saying the same things as competitors provides false comfort but prevents differentiation and long-term successEffective tone of voice guidelines are instructions for action, not lengthy descriptions—non-copywriters need practical "how" over theoretical "what"Jumping on viral trends only works if it's already embedded in your brand personality—otherwise it's embarrassing, late, and damages long-term strategyGenerosity and showing interest in others' work creates more opportunities than self-promotion—relationships matter more than portfoliosConsistent action supporting causes matters more than temporary logo changes—one-hit campaigns feel empty and leave audiences feeling empty tooThe AI anxiety narrative is largely unfounded noise—clients who value good copywriting still need human copywriters, and those who don't never valued it anyway Daring Creativity. I had one of those conversations that reminded me why I'm so passionate about exploring the intersection of technology and society. Speaking with Mark Smith, a board member at IBC and co-lead of their accelerator program, I found myself transported back to my roots in communication and media studies, but with eyes wide open to what's coming next.Mark has spent over 30 years in media technology, including 23 years building Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. When someone with that depth of experience gets excited about what's happening now, you pay attention. And what's happening at IBC 2025 in Amsterdam this September is nothing short of a redefinition of how we create, distribute, and authenticate content. The numbers alone are staggering: 1,350 exhibitors across 14 halls, nearly 300 speakers, 45,000 visitors. But what struck me wasn't the scale—it's the philosophical shift happening in how we think about media production. We're witnessing television's centennial year, with the first demonstrations happening in 1925, and yet we're simultaneously seeing the birth of entirely new forms of creative expression. What fascinated me most was Mark's description of their Accelerator Media Innovation Program. Since 2019, they've run over 50 projects involving 350 organizations, creating what he calls "a safe environment" for collaboration. This isn't just about showcasing new gadgets—it's about solving real challenges that keep media professionals awake at night. In our Hybrid Analog Digital Society, the traditional boundaries between broadcaster and audience, between creator and consumer, are dissolving faster than ever. The AI revolution in media production particularly caught my attention. Mark spoke about "AI assistant agents" and "agentic AI" with the enthusiasm of someone who sees liberation rather than replacement. As he put it, "It's an opportunity to take out a lot of laborious processes." But more importantly, he emphasized that it's creating new jobs—who would have thought "AI prompter" would become a legitimate profession? This perspective challenges the dystopian narrative often surrounding AI adoption. Instead of fearing the technology, the media industry seems to be embracing it as a tool for enhanced creativity. Mark's excitement was infectious when describing how AI can remove the "boring" aspects of production, allowing creative minds to focus on what they do best—tell stories that matter. But here's where it gets really interesting from a sociological perspective: the other side of the screen. We talked about how streaming revolutionized content consumption, giving viewers unprecedented control over their experience. Yet Mark observed something I've noticed too—while the technology exists for viewers to be their own directors (choosing camera angles in sports, for instance), many prefer to trust the professional's vision. We're not necessarily seeking more control; we're seeking more relevance and authenticity. This brings us to one of the most critical challenges of our time: content provenance. In a world where anyone can create content that looks professional, how do we distinguish between authentic journalism and manufactured narratives? Mark highlighted their work on C2PA (content provenance initiative), developing tools that can sign and verify media sources, tracking where content has been manipulated. This isn't just a technical challenge—it's a societal imperative. As Mark noted, YouTube is now the second most viewed platform in the UK. When user-generated content competes directly with traditional media, we need new frameworks for understanding truth and authenticity. The old editorial gatekeepers are gone; we need technological solutions that preserve trust while enabling creativity. What gives me hope is the approach I heard from Mark and his colleagues. They're not trying to control technology's impact on society—they're trying to shape it consciously. The IBC Accelerator Program represents something profound: an industry taking responsibility for its own transformation, creating spaces for collaboration rather than competition, focusing on solving real problems rather than just building cool technology. The Google Hackfest they're launching this year perfectly embodies this philosophy. Young broadcast engineers and software developers working together on real challenges, supported by established companies like Formula E. It's not about replacing human creativity with artificial intelligence—it's about augmenting human potential with technological tools. As I wrapped up our conversation, I found myself thinking about my own journey from studying sociology of communication in a pre-internet world to hosting podcasts about our digital transformation. Technology doesn't just change how we communicate—it changes who we are as communicators, as creators, as human beings sharing stories.IBC 2025 isn't just a trade show; it's a glimpse into how we're choosing to redefine our relationship with media technology. And that choice—that conscious decision to shape rather than simply react—gives me genuine optimism about our Hybrid Analog Digital Society.Subscribe to Redefining Society and Technology Podcast for more conversations exploring how we're consciously shaping our technological future. Your thoughts and reflections always enrich these discussions.
