V2G, V2H, V2L ...

Maynooth University has joined an international space science mission with the successful launch of Mauve, a small ultraviolet telescope developed by UK-based company Blue Skies Space. The satellite, which was launched aboard SpaceX's Transporter-15 on November 28th 2025 at 18:18 GMT, marks the beginning of a three-year mission to study how stars behave and how their activity influences the habitability of distant exoplanets. With funding from Research Ireland, Maynooth University became a member of the Mauve Science Programme in August 2025. A research team from the Department of Physics, led by Dr Emma Whelan, will use Mauve to investigate how stars and planets form, focusing on a class of young stars known as Herbig Ae/Be stars. Herbig Ae/Be stars are in a critical stage of development before they begin hydrogen fusion and become main sequence stars, like our Sun. Dr Whelan's team will study their brightness over long periods to identify variability and search for signs of early planet formation. "I am very excited to be embarking on this adventure with Mauve and eagerly anticipate the research opportunities it will bring," Dr Whelan said. "Until now, my work has primarily relied on ground-based eight-metre-class telescopes, so Mauve represents an exciting new direction for me. Its monitoring capabilities will provide a fresh window on star formation and offer valuable new insights." The group plans to build light curves for a large sample of these stars, tracking how their brightness changes daily for up to three months. Comparing this data to observations of less massive stars may provide key insights into whether larger young stars form and develop planets in the same way as Sun-like stars. The importance of the Mauve Space Programme is not only in its scientific goals but also in how it represents a new, faster, and more collaborative approach to doing space science. Designed and built in under three years, Mauve is a small, suitcase-sized satellite, weighing around 18kg, and equipped with a 13 cm telescope that observes in ultraviolet and visible light (200-700 nm). Its compact design and commercial access model allow research institutions worldwide to subscribe to the science programme, gaining direct access to space-based data without relying on highly competitive national telescope allocations. Research institutions worldwide have already secured subscriptions to access data collected by Mauve. These include Boston University, Columbia University, INAF's Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri, Konkoly Observatory, Kyoto University,National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Maynooth University, Rice University, Vanderbilt University, and Western University. Speaking about the launch, Professor Giovanna Tinetti, Chief Scientist and Co-founder of Blue Skies Space said: "Mauve will open a new window on stellar activity that has previously been largely hidden from view. By observing stars in ultraviolet light, wavelengths that can't be studied from Earth, we'll gain a much deeper understanding of how stars behave and how their flares may impact the environment of orbiting exoplanets. Traditional ground-based telescopes just can't capture this information, so a satellite like Mauve is crucial for furthering our knowledge." "Our vision is to make space science data as accessible as possible," said Dr Marcell Tessenyi, CEO and Co-founder of Blue Skies Space. "Mauve will undergo commissioning before delivering datasets to scientists in early 2026 and serve as a springboard to launch a fleet of satellites addressing the global demand for space science data." Rewatching Star Trek: Enterprise Season 1, Episode 7 — “The Andorian Incident.” Directed by Roxann Dawson, this tense bottle episode introduces Shran (the great Jeffrey Combs) and repositions the Andorians as more than blue-skinned bruisers. We dig into the Vulcan monastery of P'Jem, the hidden sensor array twist, T'Pol's loyalty test, Archer getting absolutely walloped, and why this hour is often cited as the moment Enterprise “found its voice.”We also riff on transporter anxiety, Andorian antennae, “pink-skins,” and how this early Human-Vulcan-Andorian friction foreshadows the United Federation of Planets.

Whether you're stuck in traffic, waiting at the airport whilst delay after delay is announced or just really missing someone far away, a lot of us have probably wished we could teleport. But is this superpower the stuff of science fiction? Or could it, one day, become a reality?Listener Faith wants to know whether Star Trek's Transporter could ever deconstruct and reconstruct humans in the real world, and it turns out quantum physics holds some tantalising potential for this seemingly impossible task. To search for answers Hannah and Dara dive down the quantum rabbit hole, exploring entanglement, superposition, and trying on some very special socks.

We schedule another deep cut themed week titled No Holds Barred: Darren Gaskell (HD Movie Podacst) rejoins and helps do a mini-outline of The Transporter movie/TV franchise. Was this essentially the movie version of the whole GTA formula of delivering packages and getting to checkpoints in time while outrunning the police and rival criminal affiliates? What themes from Luc Besson's earlier action-crime movies come into play for this? Is Frank Martin still the best franchise character Jason Statham has portrayed to date? SONG USED: "Fighting Man" by DJ Pone & Drixxxe

This week, we're doing something a little different in honour of Cris's birthday – and what better way to celebrate than by diving into a handpicked selection of actors whose careers, films, or sheer star quality connect (tenuously or not) to our resident birthday boy. There's no Top 5 this time around – instead, it's all about Helen Mirren, Kate Beckinsale, Kevin Spacey, Jason Statham, and Sandra Bullock, with a war film classic anchoring the episode: Full Metal Jacket.

This week, we're talking about The Transporter -- a movie that only WISHES it was The Beekeeper. We chat about an inciting incident that is NEVER explained, truly deranged musical choices and ASMR oil fights. This week on Kill James Bond: A wrong righted. As much as we wanted it to be the case, the Transporter series featured ZERO HEISTS. So today, November and Devon meet in a shady basement to give Jason Statham his Due. Based in broad strokes on a true-ish story, The Bank Job is the story of the 1971 Baker Street Robbery, where several- presumably jammy- bastards tunnelled into the safety deposit boxes of the Baker Street branch of Lloyds' Bank. ----- Remember to check out our reasonably-priced Patreon for our bonus episodes! In this episode, Jeffrey Allen, a passionate advocate for rare disease awareness and a dedicated father to Lucas, who has creatine transporter deficiency. (CTD is also referred to as SLC6A8 Deficiency, CRTR, and X-linked Creatine Transporter Deficiency.Mutations in the SLC6A8 gene result in CTD.While patients with CTD have the necessary AGAT and GAMT enzymes to form creatine, the creatine transporter does not function properly. This results in creatine in the bloodstream, but not in the brain and muscles.) Jeffrey shares his journey of parenting a child with a rare disease, the life lessons he has learned from Lucas, and his experiences participating in the Ruck for Rare and the Beast Games. He emphasizes the importance of community support, advocacy, and the beauty found in challenges. The conversation highlights the significance of genetic testing and awareness for rare diseases, as well as the need for connection and communication among parents in similar situations.

This is a preview of a bonus episode! Find the rest on our increasingly reasonably-priced patreon! ----- Neatly positioned between Transporter 1 and 2 in our release schedule here is a movie that frequently sees mention in conversations about the 'greatest movies ever made': Andrei Tarkovsky's 1966 biographical historical epic 'Andrei Rublev'. Andrei Rublev, since canonised by the eastern orthodox church, was an icon painter who lived in the 1400s near Moscow. Little is known of his actual life, so what Tarkovsky gives us is instead a fictionalised biography set against the backdrop of a realistic 15th-century Russia. ----- FREE PALESTINE Hey, Devon here.
