In Part 2, farmer's son Col Gordon explored the ways in which the colonisation of Highland Scotland destroyed a rich pre-colonial culture and relationship to the land. But in Part 3, he learns that the story of Scotland as the victim of colonial practices is just one part of a much bigger narrative. The Highlands is one of the least racially diverse parts of the UK, and it would be easy to think of the area as far removed from the UK's grim colonial history – a place where racial justice and reparations have no direct relevance. But, as Col discovers, this would be far from the truth. Col traces the connections – some indirect, others very concrete – between the rural landscape he grew up in and global patterns of displacement, exploitation and enslavement. To dig deeper, he speaks with Josina Calliste, co-founder of Land in Our Names (LION) – a Black-led, grassroots collective committed to reparations in Britain by connecting land and climate justice with racial justice – and explores what it means to be a person of colour in rural Scotland today. Landed is produced by Col Gordon and Katie Revell, with Executive Producer Abby Rose. Our Project Manager is Olivia Oldham. Huge thanks to Josina Calliste for her guidance and input and to Sarah Nicholas for all her help and support. Thanks also to Jo Barratt. The music for Landed is by Dagger Gordon and me, Col Gordon. Over the last 250 years, Gaelic culture in the Highlands of Scotland has experienced what academic Iain MacKinnon refers to as “cultural devastation”. For farmer's son, Col Gordon, the forced displacement of people during the Highland Clearances, and the dismantling of Gaelic language and traditions, are best understood through the lens of colonisation. Now, only small pockets of Gaelic culture remain, detached from the conditions and ways of life that they evolved in. In this episode, Col learns about the pre-colonial attitudes of the Gaels towards the land, investigating the question of what came before the family farm. What he finds is a system based on community and collective work, with a yearly migration to the hillside “shieling” to graze the cattle and rejuvenate the spirit. Above all, what he finds is a fundamentally different way of relating to the land – an understanding that people belong to the land, not the other way around. Could a revival of these “indigenous” practices, and these relationships to the land, provide a route forward? And, if so, how might we “re-indigenise” in an open and inclusive way? Landed is produced by Col Gordon and Katie Revell, with Executive Producer Abby Rose. Our Project Manager is Olivia Oldham. In this episode of Judgment Day, Lorne Honickman examines the Supreme Court Ruling that the Estate files of murder victims Barry and Honey Sherman be unsealed. Lorne talks with media lawyer Iain Mackinnon about what the Supreme Court said about privacy and the open Court principle.
In this episode I talk with Iain MacKinnon of Tobermory. If you’re listening to this on its day of release, a very happy Christmas to you! Iain talks about his family roots here on the island, and connections to Tiree. We talk about characters from the past, with Iain bringing their memory to life by telling stories that they told him. There are tales of the First World War, Ireland in the 20’s and more passed on from the mouths of MacGochan and others. We talked together one evening with Ishbel, Iain’s wife joining us for little bits of the conversation. It was so lovely to speak to both of them, I think I may have to chap their virtual door again some day soon to hear Ishbel’s tales, too! We caught up again a few days later to chat about Iain’s role in the Fire Brigade. So you’ll hear a bit of a leap as we talk about Gibby towards the end of the episode, which then leads us to talk about Iain’s long standing service in the Fire Brigade. There’s a couple of bits that I’ve not included in the episode, which I’ll put out as a short special at some point in the coming weeks, once the festive season has passed. At a couple of points you can hear bits of background noise in the recording, as we were recording over Zoom, due to the current situation. So please excuse this. Back in episode 9 of the podcast Iain Performed a pitch invasion while I was talking to Janet MacDonald. I think I said “I’m coming to get you…” Well, 45 episodes later, here we are, at long last. For links and more information please visit whatwedointhewinter.com Thanks for listening! Have a lovely Christmas!
Dr Andrew MacKillop and Dr Iain MacKinnon discuss their new research with Mark and Euan.
In 1994, a group of activists tried to blow up a statue on Ben Bhraggie, overlooking the town of Golspie in Sutherland. In November 2011, some more activists tried to bring it down with chains. Neither attempt was successful, but each represented the deep rooted hurt that highland communities feel due to the brutality of the Highland Clearances. Last week I examined the Clearance story and picked apart the misconceptions, and discovered what the age of Clearance was really about. But this week I delve deeper, discovering how the British Empire and its horrific trade in slaves has connections to the Clearances, how our culture was made illegal by that same Empire, and how those ideologies may still exist today - forcing us perhaps into a new era of Clearance.Interviews in this episode:Dr Nicola Martin, historian from the University of the Highlands and Islands, specialising on British imperialism and highland culture.Dr Domhnall Uilleam Stiubhart, senior lecturer at Sabhal Mór Ostaig at the University of the Highland and Islands about Gaelic culture and highland history.Dr David Alston, historian and author with a research interest in highland history and Scotland's involvement in the slave trade.Dr Iain MacKinnon, historian and researcher for the centre of governance and land reform at Coventry UniversityMeg Bishop, National Secretary for Living Rent, Scotland's tenants unionAndy Whightman, Green MSP for Lothian and land reform activistRaoul Curtis-Machin, Operations Manager at Culloden Battlefield See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In 1746, thousands of Jacobite soldiers were killed during a battle against the British at Culloden. One hundred years later, the clans are virtually gone, towns and villages have disappeared, and the highlands are owned by a handful of monied gentry. Today, only a pitiful few people own the millions of acres of land in Scotland, so what happened, and why? In the first of this two-part special, let's examine the Highland Clearances to find out the history of this extremely emotive part of Scottish history, what it means, and who, if anyone, is to blame.Interviews with:Dr Nicola Martin, historian from the University of the Highlands and Islands, specialising on British imperialism and highland culture.Dr Jim Hunter, historian from the University of the Highlands and Islands, and author of fourteen books on highland history and clearance.Dr Domhnall Uilleam Stiubhart, senior lecturer at Sabhal Mór Ostaig at the University of the Highland and Islands about Gaelic culture and highland history.Dr David Alston, historian and author with a research interest in highland history and Scotland's involvement in the slave trade.Dr Iain MacKinnon, historian and researcher for the centre of governance and land reform at Coventry University See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode I talk to Janet MacDonald of Tobermory. Janet is a well-known figure in the local community, having grown up in the town. To many of the people of North Mull she’ll be long remembered as the Gaelic teacher at Tobermory High School. Janet is also well known in Gaelic circles for her singing, and her involvement with both the local and national Mòd. I spoke with Janet by the fireside at her home in Tobermory. Archie, Janet’s husband, was there with us, and he occasionally joins in with the conversation. At one point there was a pitch invasion by a gentleman who I’m hoping to talk to soon. Mr Iain MacKinnon, who has plenty of stories about life on the island that would be of interest, I’m sure. There’s a really nice local flavour to Janet’s memories, there are many people and places mentioned, some no longer with us. We talk about houses and the people who used to live in them, drawing a map in my head with both people and place. For more info, please visit: www.whatwedointhewinter.com
