Trickle-downers love to pretend that "Econ 101" is a convincing argument against policies like the minimum wage that invest in working Americans. But the truth is that mainstream economists are terrible at predicting how the economy will behave in the future…Is Econ 101 broken? In this key foundational episode for the podcast, we dismantle the myths of orthodox economics and expose Econ 101 for what it really is: not a science, but a simplistic story used to justify inequality and defend the status quo. Our guests Eric Beinhocker (The Origin of Wealth) and James Kwak (Economism) explain how outdated assumptions about markets, people, and growth have warped economic thinking—and why it's time to write a new, better story about how the economy actually works. Part of our Back-to-Basics summer series. Essential listening for anyone ready to move beyond trickle-down talking points and think middle-out. This episode originally aired December 17, 2018. Eric Beinhocker is the Executive Director of the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the University of Oxford. He's the author of The Origin of Wealth, which applies complexity science to economics and challenges traditional market thinking. James Kwak is a writer, law professor, and former entrepreneur. He co-authored 13 Bankers and wrote Economism: Bad Economics and the Rise of Inequality, a sharp critique of how Econ 101 ideology shapes public policy and deepens inequality. Wow, what a week for those who love cycling tech!If four new dropbar groupsets from SRAM weren't enough, then Shimano certainly fills that glass with its sudden release of XT and Deore Di2. Join Escape's Dave Rome, Suvi Loponen and Alex Hunt as they discuss what's new and some things to be aware of.Meanwhile, the UCI released some upcoming rule changes that have many riders and cycling businesses upset. The geeks discuss why some of these rulings have been blown out of proportion, and why one of them is arguably just wrong.Of course, there are a couple of new bikes (Cervelo and Orbea) to discuss, and CeramicSpeed has released its first do-it-yourself hot melt wax which promises a whole lot of distance. As always, members of Escape Collective have access to the Ask a Wrench segment at the end of the episode. Here, Dave Rome is joined by pro race mechanic Brad Copeland to answer a number of geeky questions, including a trick for keeping valve nuts in place without over-tightening them, our thoughts on the best cone wrenches, mixing-and-matching chainring sizes on SRAM, a rear shock that's fussy to inflate, and a Shimano front derailleur that's hard to shift.Enjoy!Time Stamps:2:15 - Explaining the UCI's Handlebar width ruling and specifically where it's wrong17:00 - SRAM's new Force and Rival AXS27:30 - Shimano's new XT and Deore wireless shifting36:30 - Cervelo's new Aspero 543:45 - Orbea's Terra gravel bike gets overhauled47:00 - CeramicSpeed's new long-lasting hot melt wax52:00 - Ask a Wrench (Member-only!)55:00 - A tip for tubeless valve nuts in place58:30 - A deep dive and our top suggestions for good cone wrenches1:10:00 - Mixing-and-matching chainring sizes with SRAM AXS1:15:00 - Rear shock inflation woes and shock pumps1:21:00 - Fixing Shimano Ultegra front derailleur that's hard to shift

Trickle-downers want you to believe that in America, freedom is a narrow idea—freedom from taxes, from regulation, from government itself. But what good is that kind of freedom if you can't afford rent, see a doctor, or feed your family? So, this week we're revisiting one of our favorite conversations—our interview with economist Mark Paul about his book, The Ends of Freedom: Reclaiming America's Lost Promise of Economic Rights. In it, he challenges the myth of economic freedom and offers a bold alternative: a 21st-century Economic Bill of Rights. Drawing on the unfinished work of FDR and Martin Luther King Jr., Paul argues that true freedom means more than just being left alone—it means having access to the basic goods that make life possible: housing, healthcare, education, and a decent job. From the lasting damage of neoliberalism to a vision for a fairer, more humane economy, this conversation reframes what freedom really means—and what it will take to build an economy that works for everyone. Mark Paul is an assistant professor at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University and a member of the Rutgers Climate Institute. His work has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The American Prospect, The Washington Post, and The Financial Times. In 2023, he published his first book, The Ends of Freedom: Reclaiming America's Lost Promise of Economic Rights. This episode originally aired on May 16, 2023. Inflation Adjusted US Domestic Box Office for the last 25 years: Summary: In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the box office experienced significant growth, with yearly receipts reaching new heights. For instance, in 2002, domestic box office revenues hit a peak of approximately $16 billion when adjusted for inflation. Since then, total box office receipts have fluctuated, especially reacting to global events, such as the 2008 financial crisis, which led to a decrease in consumer spending on entertainment. The last two decades have seen a dominance of comic book adaptations and franchise films (e.g., Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, etc.) at the box office. These films often dominate annual box office charts, with some grossing over a billion dollars domestically. Sequels, remakes, and adaptations became staples as studios sought safe investments. The trend has been reinforced by the success of properties with established fan bases. The rise of streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, etc.) has changed how audiences consume films, often leading to decreased box office attendance for certain genres, particularly dramas and non-franchise films. The pandemic and writers strike severely impacted the film industry, with theaters closing and productions halting. The domestic box office fell dramatically in 2020. This decline prompted many studios to rethink release strategies, leading to more simultaneous releases on streaming platforms. Post-pandemic, there has been a gradual recovery, with some films performing exceptionally well, while smaller films continue to face challenges in recapturing pre-pandemic audience levels.

How can you achieve sustainable high performance in your work? Stefan Underwood, Senior Vice President of Methodology at Exos, has supported the performance goals of pro athletes, elite military operators and leaders at Fortune 100 organizations.Stefan sits down with Ginevra Czech, FS Investments Director of Client Value Add Programs, to discuss how to attract top talent by cultivating performance, the current revolution in women's performance and how his team understands and achieves flow state. “The analogy that I give is, does water running over stone make a change? No. But when it consistently does for a long time, it carves canyons. And so, to be a trickle of water, I used to tell athletes that, intensity is king, but consistency rules.”–Stefan Underwood
At every turn, Kamala Harris has favored draconian government intervention into the private sector - including penalties for businesses who pay men more than women, and the confiscation of patents from drug companies if they don't 'play by the rules.' Communism is not just a pejorative term to describe her policies, it undergirds her policies and philosophy. For these, and many other reasons, Dan believes it may be Donald Trump who enjoys a bounce in the polls coming out of the Democratic National Convention.
