As of late, Portland, Oregon has become a focal point of news again as Federal Police stand off against Antifa. The solutions that are unfolding and the rhetoric in the information cycle is binary... each side standing against each other with violence and hate as the driver. Yet, in 2012 Portland Police demonstrated another way when faced with the Occupy Portland protest. Instead of taking a heavy hand, they used influence operations to build trust, transform behavior and to forge respect and peace in the city. The history of denim takes us back to the 16th century and Neme, France. However, it is not until 1872 that denim fabric was transformed into the iconic clothing item that we now know as blue jeans. In 1872 a tailor, by the name of Jacob Davis, was asked to make a pair of pants for a miner that would last longer. He added copper rivets to the key stress points on the paints. He was working for Levi Strauss, a Bavarian-born dry goods merchant. It was the peak of the Gold Rush. The pant design became an instant success. Davis asked Strauss to help him fund his design patent. Strauss agreed. The patent was issued in 1873 and a business partnership was established. Levi Strauss Jean company was formed. On 3 October 1993, an operation lead by US Army Delta Force (SOF-D) and US Army Rangers was launched into the city of Mogadishu, Somalia. This Operation was known as Operation Gothic Serpent. The mission was intended to be a short 45 min operation to capture Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. What ensued was a 17 hour battle that later become known as the Battle of Mogadishu, or what the movie named, Black Hawk Down. SGM (RET) Joe Vega, SOF-D was there. A year ago, Hurricane Helene slammed into Western North Carolina. What followed was one of the greatest storm disasters in our history, with uncounted deaths and destruction across the rural mountain communities. Federal assistance and response was wholly inadequate, leaving many even today still without basic needs. But from the wreckage rose community and an unstoppable Faith. President Trump's press conference today about autism leads the story tonight. The Smith-Mundt Act was passed in 1948 to separate influence operations the US was doing abroad from communication the US government was doing here at home. The Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012 removed the mandatory separation allowing the programs and products the US government was using to influence governments to be able to be available for research in the US. Today is a somber day in remembrance of one of the darkest days in modern history. The loss of over 3000 lives and the launch of endless wars. Our nation was changed, tyranny took hold, and yet there are memories we must never forget. Following 911 we became of nation united under God caring once again for each other.
