For the first time in three years, Maigh Cuilinn are back in AIB Connacht Senior Football Championship action this Sunday (9th November 2025) when they travel to take on Sligo winners Shamrock Gaels. The west Galway men won their third Frank Fox two weeks previously against Salthill-Knocknacarra and they'll now hope to add to their 2022 provincial success.  But even though they'll start as favourites, the Yeats County did produce last year's winners (Coolera-Strandhill), so a tough test is expected. Leading up to the game, Maigh Cuilinn manager Cathal Clancy has been chatting to Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly. == Throw-in at Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry on Sunday is 1.30pm and we'll have LIVE coverage here on Galway Bay FM.

Celebrating our Language, Arts and CultureComhghairdeas to all of those who helped make Oireachtas na Samhna the huge success it was. Thousands of Irish language speakers from across the island of Ireland spent part of last week enjoying the music, dance, culture, arts, craic and discussions that are part of the oldest Irish language and arts event on the island of Ireland. The Waterfront Hall and other venues were filled with the very young to the not so young Gaels, all actively and enthusiastically enjoying the enormous diversity of Oireachtas na Samhna. Many took part in competitions, including sean-nós singing, sean-nós step dancing and lúibíní (poetic verses).A special well done to Máirín Nic Dhonnchadha and the leadership team which ensured the smooth running of an amazing and ambitious occasion. The presence of President Elect Catherine Connolly, due to be sworn in as Uachtarán na hÉireann next week was a special bonus. The Oireachtas was her first visit North following the presidential election. So too did the presence of Pól Deeds, the new Irish Language Commissioner, who along with Lee Reynolds the Ulster Scots Commissioner, will take up their posts next week. This is another important step forward. The Irish Language Commissioner will play an important role in enhancing the opportunities for the growth of the Irish Language.Ról na nGael i dTógáil Éire NuaCeann de na himeachtaí ag Oireachtas na Samhna eagraíodh é ag Coimisiún Shinn Féin ar Thodhchaí na hÉireann. Lá i ndiaidh lae, tá níos mó daoine, eagraíochtaí agus grúpaí a rá go bhfuil dualgas ar an Rialtas i mBaile Átha Cliath tabhairt fán phleanáil agus ullmhúchán do reifreann agus d'athaontú na tíre.The Olive is never just a TreeThe number of people killed by Israel's genocidal war on the Palestinian people of the Gaza Strip has passed 68,000, with a further 10,000 at least still buried under the rubble. Over 150,000 have been wounded, many of them permanently disabled.  The most recent figures on Israeli actions in Gaza reveal that the so-called ceasefire that began on 10 October is far from that. So far Israeli forces have violated the ceasefire on 194 occasions, including 55 shootings and 55 shellings. Other attacks have occurred since then. At least 226 people, including 97 children have been killed. What price the ceasefire?Last week, the Israeli government allowed some heavy machinery in to help in the search for dead Israeli captives. They continue to ban heavy equipment for the retrieval of Palestinian victims.Under the agreement agreed between the USA, Qatar, Egypt and Turkey humanitarian aid should now be flowing into the Gaza Strip. However, instead of the 600 trucks cleared to enter Gaza each day less than a quarter of this number are currently being allowed in. Critically trucks carrying frozen meat, eggs and livestock are still blocked.

The sea around Skellig Michael never rests. Waves slam the cliffs like a heartbeat, and mist rises from the rocks like breath from some sleeping giant. Eight miles off the Kerry coast, this jagged island looks less like a piece of earth and more like a fragment of another world. More than a thousand years ago, monks climbed 600 stone steps to live here, chasing silence, prayer, and the edge of heaven. Today, visitors come for the same reason, though they may not know it. Whether you're drawn by faith, history, or a galaxy far, far away, Skellig has a way of making you listen to what the sea remembers. And that's where today's story begins — between exile and return, faith and freedom, stone and surf. Because sometimes, we're all just trying to find our way back to the ocean. With Music from Niamh Dunne, Wolf Loescher, and Jocelyn Pettit & Ellen Gira. This is Quest & Chorus #309 0:58 - Niamh Dunne "Ballyneety's Walls" from Portraits 4:17 - WELCOME TO QUEST & CHORUS Welcome to Quest & Chorus, where every wave might carry a myth, and every exile still dreams of home. I'm your bard, Marc Gunn, also host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, and typically host of this show as Folk Songs & Stories, but today, we call it Quest & Chorus. And today, we drift to the edge of the world, To Skellig Michael, where the sea swallows history and monks once whispered their prayers to gulls. It's also where a Jedi gave up the fight. And where a selkie sings himself back into the sea. Today's theme may seem like exile or perhaps it's where you truly belong. Quest & Chorus is a 6-part podcast series. I fuse my love of Celtic and folk music, science fiction and fantasy, and travel into a podcast with a quest. In each episode, you will get a clue to unlock a secret reward. Its name comes from the Irish Sceilg Mhichíl which means Michael's Rock. It was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The island's history began in the sixth century. Monks sought isolation and closeness to God. So they settled there because the early Irish monastic tradition valued hardship, solitude, and spiritual testing. The monks carved out a small community on narrow terraces more than 600 steps above sea level. The monastic settlement they built still survives. They built a cluster of beehive stone huts, stone crosses and terraces connected by narrow paths. Everything was dry-stone construction. That means they were fitted together without mortar. They were built so well that they have lasted over a millennium. The monks grew small gardens, caught seabirds and fish, and collected rainwater in cisterns. They survived off of what the island would allow. Skellig Michael was a center of devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel sometime after the 8th century. The island was also a pilgrimage site for centuries. Climbing its steps was seen as a form of penance and spiritual renewal. By the 13th century, life on Skellig Michael had become too difficult. Storms, isolation, and changing Church patterns led the monks to relocate to the mainland, near Ballinskelligs. But the island remained a place of pilgrimage well into the modern era. Skellig Michael is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is recognized for its exceptional preservation of early Christian monastic life and its haunting natural beauty. It's also become familiar to a new generation as Ahch-To, the oceanic world where Luke Skywalker lived in exile in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Even now, Skellig Michael stands as a symbol of endurance, of faith carved into stone, of solitude turned to sanctuary, and of the fragile bridge between human devotion and the raw power of nature. LEGENDS OF SKELLIG MICHAEL One of the more famous legends involves the Tuatha Dé Danann and the Milesian invasion of Ireland. It is recounted in the Lebor Gabála Érenn (the Book of Invasions). According to this myth: As the Milesians sailed toward Ireland around 1400 BC in the mythic narrative, a storm was caused by the Tuatha Dé Danann. They are one of the faerie-like supernatural race in Irish mythology. Skellig's cliffs are sometimes mentioned as one of the treacherous places where ships were driven ashore. One version says Irr, a son of Míl Espáine (the mythic ancestor of the Gaels), was travelling from the Iberian Peninsula. He drowned and was buried on Skellig. MY THOUGHTS on SKELLIG MICHAEL 20:02 - Marc Gunn “Selkie's Life” from Come Adventure With Me Check out my blog of the puffins of Skellig Michael. Selkie's Life, Selkie Call of the Sea #234 Thank you for returning to the sea with me. Skellig Michael is not the end of the story. But it's where stories are kept safe. Next time, we wander the great alignments of Carnac, stones older than myth, standing like trees in time. Until then… If the sea calls you, don't be afraid to answer. 23:39 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Quest & Chorus. This episode was edited by Mitchell Petersen. 2005 – Twenty Years OnNext Monday one of the most historic and transformative events in the Irish Peace Process took place. Twenty years ago on the 28 July 2005 the IRA issued a statement which ended its decades long armed struggle. In its statement the IRA said: "The leadership of Óglaigh na hÉireann has formally ordered an end to the armed campaign. This will take effect from 4pm this afternoon.  All IRA units have been ordered to dump arms. All Volunteers have been instructed to assist the development of purely political and democratic programmes through exclusively peaceful means. Volunteers must not engage in any other activities whatsoever.”The IRA leadership also said that it had authorised its representative to engage with the IICD (Independent International Commission on Decommissioning) to “complete the process to verifiably put its arms beyond use in a way which will further enhance public confidence.” This was confirmed two months later on the 26 September by the Commission. The IRA initiative opened up opportunities for progress.Peace processes are by their very nature challenging and difficult. They frequently fail. Many of the wars of the 1960s and 70's were a response to the colonial occupation and exploitation of native peoples by colonial powers.  Africa saw many examples of these. Some conflicts went on into the 1980s and 90s. Algeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), Angola, Mozambique, and others, including in Asia the Vietnam War and in the Middle East the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. The South African peace process brought an end to apartheid and witnessed the election of Nelson Mandela as President of that country in 1994. In our own place our peace process brought an end to decades of conflict and heralded processes of change.Today, in a world still bedevilled by wars, the Irish Peace Process is frequently held up internationally as an example of a peace process that is working.  The governments occasionally try to root it in the Anglo-Irish Agreement of 1985. But the truth is that it started in the 1970s when Republicans began to claim back the word ‘Peace.'A Welcome Electoral ChangeThe decision, announced last week by the British government, that it will be lowering the voting age to those aged 16 and 17, is a welcome move. There is already widespread support for a reduction in the voting age. Last September the Assembly backed a Sinn Féin motion calling for this change. In the South the policy has received widespread cross-party support from Sinn Féin, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, The Green Party, The Labour Party, Social Democrats, People Before Profit, and many Independents. The London government is focussed on the 2029 Westminster election but the North will have local government and Assembly elections in 2027. The focus now must be on ensuring that the necessary legislative steps are taken to ensure that 16 and 17 year olds can vote in those elections.Updating the electoral register and ensuring that this new tranche of young voters have suitable identification, will be a big job of work but with political will it can be done. It would also send entirely the wrong message to future voters if the 2027 deadline is missed.Legislating for young people to have the right to vote is the right thing to do. All parties in the North, with the exception of the DUP, support changing the voting rules. Young people should have the right to vote on decisions that impact on their lives, including voting for a united Ireland.Gaels le Cheile In Conversation with Peter CanavanMonday 28th July, 7:30pm - Naomh Eoin CLG Corrigan Park

Ceasefires NowShould we have been surprised by the decision of the US President Donald Trump to attack Iran? No. Shocked maybe but not surprised. The weapons of mass destruction spin, that was used to justify the invasion of Iraq two decades ago, was already in wide usage by some western governments and sections of the media before B 2's dropped so-called ‘bunker buster' bombs on Iran. And we all remember what a disaster the Iraq war was for the people of that nation and for world politics. An estimated million Iraqi citizens died. The attack on Iran was an act of aggression against a state that had not attacked the USA. It was in clear breach of international law and it almost certainly broke US domestic and constitutional law. Moreover, two nuclear powers – Israel and the USA – have attacked a nation that does not have nuclear weapons. And applauding in the wings are Britain, France and Germany and others who are colluding in the genocide of the Palestinian people.Mol an ÓigeThe boys and girls of Rang A Seacht graduated from Bunscoil an tSléibhe Dhuibh last Friday.  Protecting our environmentThe blue skies and warm weather of recent days is a reminder that spring will soon give way to summer. Everywhere the trees and flowers are coming into bloom and the dark evenings are retreating as our daylight hours increase. Regrettably, this change in weather also brings with it acts of vandalism, in particular the setting of wildfires that present a real danger to hill walkers, animals, local wildlife and the natural fauna.  Build Casement NowThe delay in building the new Casement Park is totally unacceptable. Like many Gaels of my age I grew up with Casement. I played there for our school teams and enjoyed sports days as well. I have watched umpteen games over the decades. Until 2013. That was the last time Casement Park hosted a game. On 10 June 2013. International Palestinian Child DayFirst, let me congratulate Francesca Albanese who despite a despicable campaign by Israel and its allies to have her sacked, will continue in her role as UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories until 2028. She has been a champion for the people of Palestine as Israel's genocide continues to kill and wound hundreds every day.  Trade War Demands United responseThe U.S. President Donald Trump has initiated the most dangerous trade war of modern times. His widespread imposition of tariffs threatens untold damage to the world's economies. In the USA the stock market has declined sharply and senior economists are warning of a deep recession. These too will adversely impact world economies. There is no indication that President Trump intends to change direction. On the contrary he appears to be digging in. Campaign for Moore Street Continues.

In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, with no Division 1 offers, Barrett committed to the University of Pomona Pitzer (Division 3). Barrett ultimately decommitted from the D3 school and walked on to play for the Gaels.Barrett held the walk-on role for his first two years of college basketball. After those two years, Luke worked his way up to be a scholarship basketball player. Barrett continued to work hard throughout the years and as St. Mary's continued their success, so did he. The Gaels lose three starters from last season (Aidan Mahaney, Alex Ducas, and Joshua Jefferson). But SMC returns Conference Player of the Year Augustas Marciulionis. The Gaels are going to need Marciulionis to step up into more of a shot creation/scoring point guard role rather than a do-it-all type guy. Mitchell Saxen also returns for his 5th season. Saxen provides a steady presence in front of the rim on both sides of the ball with a knack of scoring in the post. Can Saint Mary's get a surprising Sophomore breakout or could a Freshman burst onto the scene to help make the Gaels nationally relevant again this season? Mark Few has Gonzaga nationally relevant in the preseason once again. The Zags return 81.5% of their minutes and are the most experienced and talented roster in the league. Anton Watson was the only starter they lost, but he was their best player on both sides of the ball last season. The Bulldogs' dynamic guard duo in Andrew Nembhard and Nolan Hickman come back for another year, along with big man Graham Ike. Can Khalif Battle or Michael Ajayi add the shot creation aspect that Gonzaga was looking for? What should be the expectations for the Zags this season? What other programs can challenge the two titans atop this conference? Mac and Bieniek finish the West Coast Conference College Basketball Preview with some takes. The College Basketball Experience (@TCEonSGPN) on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network talks about the newest round of Conference Realignment. Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) and Noah Bieniek (@NoahB77_) talk about the biggest West Coast Conference storylines. At the end of the episode Mac and Bieniek conduct a draft. They rank the WCC basketball teams based on their likely success, or lack there of, over the next five years. Oregon State and Washington State are transitioning from the PAC 12 to the WCC in college basketball. Washington State is experiencing turnover on the roster and coaching staff as well. Wayne Tinkle remains the head coach of the Beavers. Can OSU fare better against competitors on a more neutral playing field? Who got to make the first draft selection between Mac and Bieniek? Can anything slow Gonzaga down in the West Coast Conference? How far behind the Zags is Saint Mary's? Is a Final Four realistic for the Gaels in the next five years? Is anybody else on those two program's level? Which program of Washington State, San Francisco, or Santa Clara will have the best "Next Five Years?" Can David Riley lead the Cougars to a successful stretch of seasons? Will Herb Sendek continue to ascend with Broncos like in recent seasons? Can San Francisco prove to be coach proof? What other basketball teams in the WCC have potential to climb in the top half of contenders?
