A former walk-on to a starter at St. Mary's (California), Luke Barrett joins this week's episode of @Notevend2 . In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, with no Division 1 offers, Barrett committed to the University of Pomona Pitzer (Division 3). Soon after his commitment, he heard from the St. Mary's coaching staff that a walk-on roster spot was available for him. Barrett ultimately decommitted from the D3 school and walked on to play for the Gaels.Barrett held the walk-on role for his first two years of college basketball. After those two years, Luke worked his way up to be a scholarship basketball player. Barrett continued to work hard throughout the years and as St. Mary's continued their success, so did he. The first ever local Hong Kong woman basketball player to play in the NCAA, Yannie Chan, joins this week's episode of "Not Even D2". Yannie committed to Emmanuel College in February of 2021; a decision that will be remembered for Yannie and others in Hong Kong forever. Yannie was a GNAC all-conference player as a freshman. The next year she would be the 2022-23 GNAC Player of the Year. Just before her sophomore season, Yannie competed for Hong Kong's national team in the Asian Games. This would lead her to be a part of more Hong Kong history as the team won their first ever game competing in the Asian Games. Due to injury, Yannie did not compete in the 2023-24 season for Emmanuel. After the year being sidelined, she would enter the transfer portal where Division 1 schools became interested in the Hong Kong native. Chan committed to play for Iona this summer, and will compete for the Gaels during the 2024-25 season. The Portree Broadcasting Corporation was a pilot for a series that was never commissioned by BBC Scotland - recorded on Skye and produced by myself in 2004, with the object of letting islanders who never meet one another explore their cultures and take o'er the airwaves for one glorious hour of mayhem. It features Gaelic speakers Prof Norman Macdonald and Cailean Maclean plus Shetlander Phil Goodlad and Orcadian Dave Gray. I made myself the cynical newshound sent north from Glasgow to lick the islanders into shape after the Gaels who took over BBC Scotland decided to shift the newsroom to Skye - hence the name, the Portree Broadcasting Corporation. It's a wee bit of history - 20 years ago there were still tolls on the Skye Bridge and the great Dave Gray was wise-cracking as only he knew how. Dave (just retired as Station Manager at Radio Orkney) died suddenly in February 2024. The historian and BBC Skye reporter Prof Norman Macleod died a year earlier in 2023.Happily Phil, Cailean and myself are still going strong.
