In this episode Kristina McClendon, Deputy Director of Development, Magdalen College School, Oxford joins me to discuss their regular giving programme.Kristina shares views on differences she has seen between US and UK regular giving fundraising. There's a great deal we can learn from best practice in the US, from building a culture of philanthropy, being unafraid to ask, and creating a donor journey from regular giving into larger gifts.Regular giving lets people raise their hands and say ‘Yes, I want to support the school. I want to support what you're doing', which is why this work is critical in creating a sustainable fundraising function. Joe Tilley's Great Canadian Sports Show | EP 108 | GERRY MEEHAN Gerry Meehan is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger and the former general manager and Senior Vice President of the Buffalo Sabres. Meehan was born in Toronto, Ontario and raised in Newmarket, Ontario. He played minor hockey for St. Michael's College School and junior for the Toronto Marlboros. He played for the 1966–67 Marlboros that won the Memorial Cup. Meehan was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1963 NHL Amateur Draft, fourth round, 21st overall. He played for the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers, Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks, Atlanta Flames, Washington Capitals, as well as the Ontario Hockey Association's Toronto Marlboros, American Hockey League's Rochester Americans, CPHL's Tulsa Oilers, Western Hockey League's Phoenix Roadrunners, Seattle Totems, and the World Hockey Association's Cincinnati Stingers. He served as captain for both the Sabres and Capitals. One of Meehan's career highlights as a Sabre remains a lowlight to Flyers fans. In the last game of the 1971–72 regular season, the Flyers needed a win or a tie against the Sabres to beat out the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final playoff spot. The score was tied, but with just four seconds on the clock, Meehan took a shot from 80 feet (24 m) away that somehow got by Flyers goalie Doug Favell – ending the Flyers' season. In 1984, the team made Meehan the first former Sabre to serve in a front-office position, as assistant general manager under Bowman. During the 1986–87 season, Bowman stepped down, and Meehan was promoted to general manager. With the departures of Bowman and superstar Gilbert Perreault, the Sabres finished the season in last place overall that year, but rebounded the next year as NHL's most improved team, with a record of 37–32–11 – and 21 points higher in the standings. Meehan's years as a general manager were marked by the addition of a number of top-caliber players, including No. 1 draft pick Pierre Turgeon, Soviet defector Alex Mogilny, Dale Hawerchuk, Pat LaFontaine, and Dominik Hašek. In 1993, Meehan was named the executive vice president of sports operations, taking a more active role in the organization's business and legal affairs. In 1996, Gerry left the Sabres organization and founded GMM Consulting Services, now Cardinal Consultants Ltd., which provides a wide variety of consulting services to sports teams, leagues, associations, and athletes. Cloverleaf Radio's host The Host with the Most Jimmy Falcon welcomes back Author Dacre Stoker, The Great Grand Nephew of Dracula Author Bram Stoker! From Wikipedia:. Dacre Calder Stoker (born August 23, 1958) is a Canadian-American author, sportsman and filmmaker. Stoker was born in Montreal, Quebec. He is the great-grandnephew of Irish author Bram Stoker, the author of the 1897 Gothic novel Dracula. He lived in his childhood in Montreal, Quebec and attended the Bishop's College School. He taught for several years at Appleby College. Stoker is a former member of the Canadian men's pentathlon team. He coached the team at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Because of the Stokers' frustrating history with Dracula's copyright, Dacre, with encouragement from screenwriter Ian Holt, decided to write "a sequel that bore the Stoker name" to "reestablish creative control over" the original novel. In 2009, Dracula the Un-dead was released, written by Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt. Both writers claim to have "based [their work] on Bram Stoker's own handwritten notes for characters and plot threads excised from the original edition" along with their own research for the sequel, though the plot and characters often directly contradict the original novel. This also marked Dacre Stoker's writing debut. Winnipeg Free Press reviewer Kenneth MacKendrick called it "tempting enough to read and bad enough to be controversial, striking a balance between sensationalism and mediocrity". Stoker contributed to Dracula in Visual Media: Film, Television, Comic Book and Electronic Game Appearances, 1921–2010, along with Caroline Joan Picart, David J. Skal, J. Gordon Melton and John Edgar Browning. Stoker directed, produced and wrote the 2011 documentary film Dracula meets Stoker. Stoker, with his colleague Hans C. De Roos, is currently working on a Bram Stoker Dracula travel guide which will identify real-life locations mentioned in Stoker's novel as well as highlight the places Bram grew up in. In 2018, he released Dracul, a prequel to Dracula which he wrote alongside J. D. Barker. Paramount has purchased the rights for the movie. Director Andy Muschietti, It producers Barbara Muschietti and Roy Lee have been hired to work on it. Dacre, his wife, Jenne Stoker, and their two children live in Aiken, South Carolina, where he is the executive director of the Aiken Land Conservancy. In this episode, I am joined by Susie Baker, Director of Waynflete Office, Magdalen College School, Oxford. We discuss a whole range of fundraising issues around bursaries and particularly focus on the shift from fundraising for immediate bursaries to endowment fundraising.Susie has raised £3 million to build a sixth form centre and is now working towards an impressive goal of £15 million, specifically for endowment to secure the future provision of bursaries. We discuss how to build effective partnerships with donors to make them feel that they are truly playing a role in the school's success. The key to this is being transparent in letting them know where their donation is going and the difference it is making within the school community. We also talk about the power of storytelling in a fundraising campaign and how it can compel people to get behind your cause and become donors.
