Meghan Chard is many things at once — principal dentist, practice owner, mum of three, and quietly passionate evangelist for childhood airway health. In this episode, she sits down with Payman for a wide-ranging conversation that takes in meeting her husband Simon at dental school, buying his family's Leicestershire practice a month before their first child arrived, and the very particular chaos of juggling clinical work, business ownership, and family life. Then there's the airway thread — and once Meghan gets going, you can see why she's hooked. Sleep disordered breathing in children is, she argues, a dramatically underscreened problem, and dentists are uniquely placed to spot it.In This Episode00:00:55 — Introductions and Rothley Lodge00:02:30 — Meeting Simon at King's00:05:10 — Life as associates, then buying the practice00:06:05 — Running the practice: ops vs. direction00:08:25 — The dental family advantage00:12:45 — Learning the numbers — and how Pärla helped00:13:00 — Staff management and the art of delegation00:15:30 — Superpowers and self-awareness00:17:35 — The juggle: three kids, two clinical days, one nanny00:20:00 — Something has to give00:26:10 — Mary McAleese, Belfast, and family roots00:30:05 — Childhood airway obstruction: signs, symptoms and the dentist's role00:40:05 — Treatment: referral, palatal expansion and the habit-corrector appliance00:54:10 — Case studies and outcomes00:58:35 — Pärla: the emotional roller coaster of consumer business01:05:35 — Covid and the darkest days of practice ownership01:08:20 — Dental school, inferiority, and graduating second in the year01:16:30 — Blackbox thinking01:26:25 — Faith, spirituality, and community01:30:50 — Succession planning01:35:10 — How Meghan ended up in dentistry01:39:15 — Best lecture: Malcolm Levinkind on teeth, posture and the body01:41:50 — Favourite resources: Breath, Breathe Sleep Thrive, Saved by the Mouth01:42:45 — Sauna obsession and longevity habits01:43:55 — Fantasy dinner party01:45:40 — What she'd do differentlyAbout Meghan ChardMeghan Chard is a principal dentist and co-owner of Rothley Lodge Dental Practice in Leicestershire, which she and her husband Simon Chard took over from his family in 2018. Kevin Bersofsky, owner of Montagne Russe wines, is back on California Wine Country with Dan Berger and Daedalus Howell. He has been on the show before, the last time was this episode in 2024. Kevin has brought a French style sparkling Rosé. Dan likes this sparkling Rosé because it is dry. This is a 2022, 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chard, Keller estate Petaluma Gap fruit. Kevin is very light with the dosage, 2.5 grams, here. It’s like lemons and lemonade. A little sugar makes it drinkable. 2022 was a hot year, but Kevin says there are wines before the heat, and after the heat, a tale of two completely different vintages. This was picked before the heat. Kevin calls the Petaluma Gap a sort of mini-San Francisco. At about five o’clock, a coastal breeze comes in. The effects are well known. First, the wind slows the maturation of the grape. Also, the wind stops the photosynthesis of the leaves. This favors thicker skins and color. It also keeps the acid levels up.++++++California Wine Country is brought to you by Deodora Estate Vineyards. Visit Deodora to discover 72 acres in the Petaluma Gap that produce exceptional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Sip the difference! ++++++ Kevin says he waits for acidity to come down before sugars get too high. In other places, you reach sugar maturity and acid maturity at the same time. Kevin picks on 3 criteria. Flavor is first. He can taste and predict Brix. When he tastes something, he knows. He has a flavor catalog in mind. For example, the Roberts Road vineyard, he has flavor criteria, and he knows what he wants. Dan says California can have fruit, acid and body without having to sacrifice one. Greg Jones is a meteorologist and Oregon farmer, who runs a weather forecast site. Visit the Abacela winery website. Too much oak. Chardonnay in California usually has too much oak. Kevin’s Montagne Russe Chardonnay is different. It has a bit of lemon oil and tropical fruit. But the acid is holding everything together. 2023 was a cold year. He did half ML on this wine. They use Puncheon barrels, which are 2.2 times larger than regular barrels. That puts less oak per unit of volume, onto the wine. Next, they taste a 2022 Pinot Noir with spectacular color. 2022 was a difficult vintage. The fruit came from the Sangiacomo family vineyard. Dan says the grower gets credit. When you pay premium prices for fruit, you also get the grower’s expertise and personal care. Dan finds this wine faintly rustic, as opposed to the bright cherry and berry. It’s a different kind of Pinot Noir. Petaluma Gap always delivers because it has more than just cold climate. It is more subtle and has more character. When Kevin has picked, he asks around to see who else has picked. Sometimes he’s the first. Gary Farrell would often pick early too and made great wine. +++++ On June 9 at 6 pm, the Healdsburg Wine Library is opening the new Millie Howie Memorial Garden and Patio. It’s free to the public and tickets are available at the Healdsburg Wine Library events page. +++++ The last wine is the Syrah. They have 23 bottles left. 2022 Petaluma Gap Syrah from Keller Estate. The Keller estate had some extra Syrah and Viognier that they offered to him. “Co-fermentation time!” says Dan. They put it all together, 100% whole cluster, 9% Viognier. It spent the final 8 months in stainless steel. He created an entirely different label for it. It came alive after a year in bottle. Dan says that this one “identifies” Syrah, which is meaty in a fruit sense, it’s not gamey. The Wind to Wine Festival is coming, October 17, 2026. Start planning now!

In this episode of Can Marketing Save the Planet, we are joined by Dr. Simon Chard, cosmetic dentist and co-founder of PARLA Oral Care. PARLA is a B Corp certified challenger brand on a mission to give people toothpaste that is better for them, whilst ridding the industry of single-use plastic. Simon, a high-profile dentist, was being used by one of the world's biggest toothpaste brands in their TV adverts, at the same time, he was watching programmes such as Blue Planet, and becoming acutely aware of the plastic crisis, he's also just become a father. “Every tube of toothpaste you've ever used still exists somewhere on the planet," he says. With 20 billion plastic toothpaste tubes ending up in landfill or ocean each year, (yes read that again! 20 billion!), Simon and his fellow co-founders, also leading dentists, felt a responsibility to act, and PARLA was born. Launched in 2020, the solution is twofold: first, toothpaste tablets in 100% plastic-free packaging, and later, infinitely recyclable aluminium tubes. PARLA rejected the "recyclable plastic" route taken by big multinationals. "It's greenwashing. It's better than non-recyclable, but it's not a solution," Simon explains. PARLA's other differentiator is its "smarter science", ingredient decks built on peer-reviewed research, formulated by dentists who understand what the mouth actually needs, “It's got everything in it that you need and nothing that you don't," says Simon. Simon shares the brand's journey which has been one of constant learning, from Dragon's Den to securing listings in major retailers, to winning the Sky Zero Footprint Fund. It's been a journey which has led Simon and the team t PARLA to learn a lot about the importance of messaging. "We've changed our language to be much more focused on what's in it for the consumer, with a secondary message of being plastic-free. If I try to give my kids a broccoli smoothie, they'll say no. But if I mask it with something they're interested in, they still get the vegetables." For Simon, authenticity is everything, PARLA is building a tribe of dental professionals who recommend their products. Authentic advocates in this category is critical, as 30-40% of purchasing decisions are influenced by dental advice. Tune in as we talk to Simon about: · The moment of realisation that led three dentists to take on the oral care giants. · Why "recyclable plastic" isn't the solution. · The science behind smarter oral care, and the ingredients that actually matter. · The challenge of balancing sustainability messaging with consumer desire. · Why,"what's in it for me?" comes first. · Building authentic advocacy through the dental profession. · The power of professional partnerships and recommendations. For more information and to learn more about the back story and the products visit PARLA's website. Episode 258 Rorke's Drift part two. It's important to listen to Episode 257 because that sets everything up for this episode - there's too much to repeat particularly in the layout of the buildings which were fully described in Episode 257. There were around 330 British and Natal Native Contingement troops marooned at Rorke's Drift, about to be attacked by 4000 Zulu warriors. Approaching rapidly, the reserve amabutho of the Zulu army, led by Prince Dabulamanzi - a man who was driven by pride and personal valor — loyal to his king and brave, yet impulsive compared with Cetshwayo kaMpande's politics of restraint. Dabulamanzi's name means the one who conquers waters, and most apt because he had decided to lead the warriors across the Mzinyathi River into Natal. A literal crossing and a metaphorical defiance. Zulu oral tradition refers to this battle as Shiyane by the way, or kwaJimu, Jims land after Jim Rorke who build the trading store. It was 4pm, January 22nd 1879. The barricades were still going up the drift, the sacks of mielies, the boxes of bully beef and biscuits, when Lieutenant Henderson and Hlubi Molife of the baTlokoa Native contingent rode up with 80 of their men. Lieutenant John Chard of the Royal Engineers who commanded the post realised they'd managed to make their own way across the Mzinyathi pontoon, and he asked the horsemen to reccie up the river beyond Shiyane mountain. If you remember, that was the high point immediately behind Rorke's Drifts two buildings, the house slash hospital, and the trading store, slash church, slash commissariat. Henderson offered to help defend the supply depot - a hollow offer as you'll hear shortly. Chard had been operating blindly since his observers had scurried back down the Shiyane after they realised three groups of Zulu regiments were approaching. Henderson took his mounted unit around the southern flank of the Shiyane where they could observe the territory from higher ground. Moments later scattered shots were heard, and Henderson and his unit galloped up and he shouted “Here they come, as black as hell and as thick as grass…” Henderson and another rider, Bob Hall, lingered for some moments beyond the orchard in front of Rorke's Drift, firing a few shots to the north, then turned and galloped away. They had survived Isandlwana and could not stomach further action. Chard was going to bump into these two later during the Anglo-Zulu war and they would apologize for fleeing and leaving the small group of defenders to fend for themselves. Watching from within the wall of boxes and bags were the Natal Native Contingent, and their commanders. Stevenson's men flung down the sacks they were using to construct the walls, and bolted through the barricades, following Henderson. Their white officers ran away as well, along with their NCOs, including Corporal Anderson. He was a Scandinavian who spoke very little English, and the sight of the men of the NNC he commanded running away, along with their supposed officers, panicked him and he ran off. Soldiers of Bravo Company left behind were enraged, several opened fire on the cowards fleeing the scene. Corporal Anderson was shot through the back of the head - killed instantly. It was another irony of South African history right there. The first man on the British side to die at Rorke's Drift was shot by his own side.

Elaine, the owner of Elaine Wines is our guest today on California Wine Country with Dan Berger and Daedalus Howell. She started her winery after a career as an biotech intellectual property attorney. Dan Berger discovered these wines just by tasting them at an event. He was excited to find a Chardonnay that was not overdone and that smelled and tasted like Chardonnay. It is an older style of making Chardonnay that appeals to people like Dan who remember when that style was prevalent. Elaine Wines is a small winery but has already earned a bunch of awards. This first one for tasting is the 2023 Chardonnay, the youngest one that Elaine brought. All of the Chardonnays are made with fruit from her vineyard. She has three acres with one acre of Chard and two of Pinot Noir. Dan detects a little bit of dried pineapple character and the oak is very subtle. The vineyard is at high elevation and Dan says the wine matches the smell of the vineyard. There are fir trees and oaks nearby which influence the vineyard. Dan also appreciates the good acidity. The vines are 25 feet from their house. Before Elaine moved to California, she was a biotech patent attorney, with a background in molecular and micro-biology. She got an online certificate in winemaking from UC Davis, before she moved from North Carolina. Elaine found a custom crush where she was not obligated to meet a tonnage minimum, which allowed her to start making wine with a small production. She found a community of helpful people in California, who work in wine. That is uniform throughout most wine regions in the world, says Dan Berger. Dan says that Prohibition may have ended in 1933 but it was the 1960s before winemaking woke up in the US, in California mostly. Chardonnays The second Chardonnay they taste came from the same grapes, but the first had newer barrels and the 2022 was made in one single barrel that had been used once before. That is generally considered 50% new. She only made 23 cases of this, because they had a very low yield and she had promised some grapes to another winemaker. This wine won a Double Gold at the San Francisco Chronicle wine tasting. Dan says that the problem with a lot of Chardonnay today is that it has to be big and rich. This is the other side of the spectrum of types of Chard. A lot of people making Chardonnay are trying to make a wine that they think will sell. Elaine, on the other hand, came into this without that notion at all. She just lets the vineyard do what it can do, and then handle it in a way to bring that out. Don't serve it too cold, because the flavors won't come out. What's more, this wine is a 2022 and it has had enough time to reach full maturity. She likes to do "as little as I can" and treat it gently. Pinot Noir The next tasting is a Pinot Noir that earned 99 points and a Double Gold from the American Fine Wine Competition, and Gold Medals all over the place. Dan says that the judges like it when the dominant flavor is fruit not oak. Dan describes the flavor of beets that is hiding in the wine.

Oded Shakked, Longboard Vineyards Oded Shakked from Longboard Vineyards is back on California Wine Country with Dan Berger and Daedalus Howell. He has been on CWC several times before, the last two times were this episode on September 20, 2024. and a year before that, this episode on November 17, 2023. Today he has brought more Longboard wines to taste and to discuss. Oded Shakked’s episodes on California Wine Country have the distinction of holding the N.1 and N.2 positions for the most traffic (streams plus downloads) among all CWC episodes in the last eight years of the podcast. Congratulations to Oded and Longboard Vineyards! Daedalus Howell begins by remembering that his last film premiered at Longboard Vineyards, as part of what is now the True West Film Fest. Oded Shakked remembers that he liked the movie. 40 Harvests! This morning, Oded Shakked finished his 40th harvest, 28 for Longboard and the rest, for others. He still gets energized during harvest, when you work 12-18 hour days and feel jazzed afterwards. Oded wants to find a balance, for Sauvignon Blanc, using grapes from different regions and 40% in neutral barrels, the rest in stainless steel, so partial ML, but still good natural acidity. They are tasting the 2024 SV from Russian River Valley. A lot of SV has been converted to Pinot Noir, but not this vineyard. “It has a nice snap to it, … green pea… melon… Meyer lemon…” says Dan. It has a character that Oded likes to call sun-dried linen. Dan says that unfortunately, California Chardonnay is produced for people who like something rich. Dan considers those Chardonnays to be cocktail wines. SV is more fascinating because it has more nuances of flavor. In this Chard from Longboard, the ML is subtle. And unlike some New Zealand SVs, it is not too sweet. It is not served too cool, so the flavors are more evident. Watergirl Rosé Oded always wanted to make Rosé, and initially he made it from Syrah. However it did not sell. At the time, Rosé had not yet become fashionable. Most people in Russian River Valley make Rosé from Pinot Noir. Oded makes his Rosé mostly from Grenache, with some Syrah and Caringnane. He is looking for that southern French style. The name Watergirl Rosé comes from the wine’s previous name, which was Wahine. That means a surfer girl in Hawaiian, and nobody knew the word or could pronounce it. Oded is a lifelong surfer. He noticed that whenever there were women in the water, they had to work twice as hard to compete for space to drop in. He has a lot of respect for them because of that and so the wine is named for them. This Watergirl Rosé has juicy berry notes and watermelon at first, then the finish gets a little bit of the red wine component. Later in the show Oded tells the story of how he grew up 100 yards from the beach in Israel. He started surfing as a kid and he still surfs. After his military service he made surfboards for a living, for a while. He would close shop in September and go to surf the west facing beaches in Portugal, Spain and France for months at a time. His interest in wine started in Spain on surf trips, drinking Albariño. It took some time for him to get so interested in wine. A friend of the family told him about a winemaking school in the US, and he took the suggestion. At 101 years old, Reg Chard sits down for what he declares “the last interview I'll ever do.” This powerful and poignant conversation takes us on a journey through his extraordinary life and it's unlike any other episode we've recorded. We begin before the war: a young baker's apprentice, the youngest of ten children in Dulwich Hill, NSW, whose heart guided him to leave civilian safety and enlist at just 18 despite bakers being exempt. We travel next to the brutal jungles of New Guinea, where Reg endured malaria, scrub typhus, and unimaginable hardship along the Kokoda Trail. He shares vivid stories from Milne Bay and Imita Ridge, recalls the airstrip built under fire, and recounts losing mates at Sanananda all while recounting the sheer endurance he found in the harshest conditions .Then the challenge of returning to civilian life. With his homeland's baker offering his old role, Reg chose instead to work in iron foundries and the trucking industry, building a life alongside his sweetheart Betty, whom he married in October 1945 .Now, in this stirring final interview, Reg reflects on courage, loss, survival and community. At 101, he's not just a veteran; he's an educator, a guide at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway, and a custodian of a legacy that he believes should be remembered not by him, but by those who never came home .This episode is a rare and intimate tribute Reg's swan song as one of Australia's last surviving Kokoda soldiers. Don't miss this final testament of bravery, resilience, and the quiet dignity of a Digger's life. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
