I'm excited to have Kathy Shihadah back with us. Kathy is a Writer/Editor/Researcher at "If Americans Knew"—a media organization focused on the Middle East. She's also a Blogger at Patheos with the title, Grace-Colored Glasses. Moreover, she has close family living in Gaza and at least one family member who has fled Gaza. She has a well-researched and personal perspective on what's going on in the Israel-Gaza-Hamas War. We talk about the Gaza Ceasefire and what's going on today. There is so much to this story that can make your head spin, so we're glad to have Kathy on to help us sort through a lot of stuff—some of it just plain misinformation you hear in the media. The Ceasefire deal, which was supposed to be into Phase 2 last weekend, is hanging by a thread. Learn what's happening now in Gaza, Israel, and the West Bank, and where things might be headed. In the last part of a series on the Israel lobby in the United States, Margot Patterson talks to Alison Weir, founder and executive director of If Americans Knew, a non-profit established more than 20 years ago to educate Americans about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Weir discusses some of the many groups and individuals that comprise the Israel lobby, why and what Americans should know about the lobby, and how Israel's advocates have been responding to the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel and the controversy over Israel's war in Gaza.
A journalist for "If Americans Knew," Kathy Shihadah has a deep connection to Palestine through her Palestinian relatives living in Gaza. Drawing on her experience as a professional researcher of the Israel-Palestinian conflict, as a progressive Christian blogger, and and her personal relationship with Gaza residents, Kathy shares this story of "A Refugee Family's Quest for Survival." As an independent journalist, Alison Weir went on her own to see what was happening during the Second Intifada (uprising) in Occupied Palestine. What she found was the complete opposite of what was being reported in the corporate media. Upon her return, she founded "If Americans Knew" and has been covering Occupied Palestine and the Israeli state in a fact-based way ever since. We speak with Weir about the extent of US support for the Israeli State, the most prominent misconceptions being pedaled in the United States and the reality Palestinians experience. She also describes how to reach people in the United States who are misinformed and what we can do to end the injustice.
"Anti-Zionism" is now being equated to "Anti-Semitism" by Israeli partisans as well by the U.S. State Department. A recent international campaign orchestrated by four Zionist organizations, including the ADL, tried to prevent Alison Weir of If Americans Knew from speaking on the subject, “Uncovered, Israel’s Occupation of Palestine,” (link to talk) at a community college in Fresno, CA by accusing her of being an "Anti-Semite." Local sponsor GV Wire did not back down and said they believed in free speech and would even sponsor another event featuring a supporter of Israel. The event went off with no protesters present as promised by the Israeli partisans. Fresno members of We Hold These Truths were there to support Alison Weir with signs like "No More Wars For Israel." Ms. Weir remarked that the campaign to stop her from speaking was the most intense that she has witnessed to date. This 21-minute podcast reveals some interesting insights into the event and her attackers who appear to be becoming desperate in their attempts to prevent the truth of the Israeli occupation from being broadcast. "One Day In Gaza" is a BBC documentary that has been shown in the UK, but was cancelled by PBS in the US. It was scheduled to air on May 14, 2019, the anniversary of the "Gaza March of Return" massacre, that occurred one year earlier. Sixty Palestinians in Gaza were killed and On May 14,, 2018, the same day as the dedication of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem. This documentary shows both sides of what took place but there is too much damning documentation about Israel's action's that Israeli partisans don't want Americans to know about. The contention of the WHTT podcast, "Does Israel Have a Shoot to Cripple & Maim Policy Against Palestinians?" by Chuck Carlsono, is confirmed by "One Day In Gaza." An excellent analysis of the documentary is done by Alison Weir of If Americans Knew, "View the Frontline Documentary on Gaza that PBS pulled."
My guest today is journalist Alison Weir. Her best-selling book Against Our Better Judgment: The Hidden History of How the U.S. Was Used to Create Israel has been called a must-read for all Americans and her websites, If Americans Knew and Israel Palestine News are invaluable sources for information on Palestinian human rights and the pernicious influence of the Zionist lobby on US politics.
Senator Bernie Sanders called the killing of over 30 Palestinian demonstrators and the wounding over 1000 by the Israeli Defense Forces, that inculded 100 snipers, as "tragic." Is the rest of the Congress blind? This three minute report from If Americans Knew does an excellent job of countering the Zionist apologists in our government and main stream media who always paint Israel as the victims no matter out outrageous their measures. Several demonstrators running away from the border fence were shot in the back. Gaza has been under a suffocating blockade by Israel since 2007 that threatens to make Gaza unlivable by 2020.
The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, explained at the 2017 AIPAC convention how she led the charge to cover Israel's apartheid tracks as documented by the UN's report, "Israeli Practices Toward the Palestinian People and the Question of Apartheid," This report clearly exposed Israel as an apartheid state. And, most of the world already knows this. Armed with no arguments against the carefully researched and documented report, Haley resorted to attacking one of the report's authors, Richard Falk, a respected international law and international relations scholar who taught at Princeton University for 40 years. Richard Falk also happens to be Jewish. An ad hominem attack like this on a Zionist Jew would have been met with cries of antisemitism and calls for a resignation. This poweful, 4 minute video of UN Ambassador Haley's appearance at the AIPAC convention on March 27, 2017 was put together by our friends and allies at If Americans Knew. For details and analysis of the UN report, listen to WHTT's podcasts, "The Israeli Emperor Has No Clothes, Part I - The Unveiling" & Part II - Exposing the Facts."
In this thought provoking, 23 minute program, Craig Hanson and Tom Compton join Chuck Carlson to discuss the issue of property rights in Israel. What about the indigenous Philistines that are now referred to as Palestinians? Do they have any property rights or do the Biblical concepts about property rights not apply to them anymore? The Zionists claimed that they have occupied "a land with no people for a people without a land" and that the Palestinians are an invented people. The inspiration for this program was from a revealing news story aired on mainstream media MSNBC, that talked about the shrinking lands of the Palestinians. (See - the story and the retraction made after pressure from Zionists applied on MSNBC and a story by Alison Weir of If Americans Knew, "MSNBC, Martin Fletcher Disavow Map of Palestine Being Wiped Off the Map"). Craig Hanson provides his interpretation in his article, "Property Rights In Israel."
On the February 26, 2015 edition ofTell Somebody, the subject was the relationship of Israel, Palestine, and the U.S. Allison Weir is the founder of If Americans Knew, a national organization that provides information on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and on U.S. foreign policy regarding the Middle East, that is often missing from U.S. press coverage. Ahead of appearances in Kansas City by Allison Weir sponsored by Citizens for Justice in the Middle Eastand AFSC-KC, we had a conversation with Katy Escobar, the social media director and outreach coordinator at If Americans Knew.
