The Russia/Ukraine war has continued to go back and forth. Does either side have the upper hand? What's the America's role in it all? We talk to Ian Kelly, former US Ambassador to Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and to Georgia and now on the faculty of Northwestern University, about what he's seeing.
“It's what we call a new world disorder: 60 wars, 120 million people - refugees and displaced, 300 million people hungry, plus another 45 million according to the World Food Program as a result of the constrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. That's a disordered world. And people can inveigh against international institutions as much as they like, but the problem we're facing is not that there's too strong an international system - it's too weak.”Caitríona Perry speaks to David Miliband, President of the International Rescue Committee.Miliband, who was previously British Foreign Secretary, first took up the post in 2013, overseeing the New York-headquartered organisation whose humanitarian relief operations are active in over 40 war-affected countries. As the world navigates multiple conflicts across the Middle East and Africa, in places such as Sudan, Lebanon and Gaza, humanitarian crises continue to grow. They are further compounded by cuts to international aid, the breakdown of the rules-based order, plus trade and shipping difficulties due to the conflict in Iran. This means aid organisations like the IRC are increasingly having to adapt how they respond. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. Miguel is joined by Alexander Aviña — associate professor of Latin American and Mexican history at Arizona State University and author of Specters of Revolution: Peasant Guerrillas in the Cold War Mexican Countryside — for a deep conversation where fútbol and imperialism collide. First, Alexander breaks down Mexico's World Cup-hosting history, linking the 1970 tournament to the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre and 1986 to the 1985 Mexico City earthquake and public jeering of PRI presidents, while noting protests during 1986 and Sócrates' solidarity gestures as Maradona worked his magic on the pitch. They compare those political tensions to the upcoming 2026 tournament. Alexander and Miguel also break down the younger, Liga MX and Euro club-heavy Selección Nacional Mexicana roster, what home-field advantage at Azteca could mean, and why FIFA's hyper capitalist grip on this tournament — from displaced vendors and street workers in Mexico City to $30,000 World Cup final tickets in the US — has both Miguel and Alexander feeling less excited about this World Cup than any before.Miguel and Alexander also dig into the CNN and New York Times reporting on CIA-linked assassination operations targeting cartel figures on Northern Mexican soil, asking whether the line between intelligence sharing and outright foreign intervention has already been crossed. They also break down Mexico's Ministry of Public Education, reversing its plan to end the school year early for the World Cup, the US State Department's announced review of all 53 Mexican consulates and the far-right conspiracy theory behind it, and the broader Trump administration push to install a right-wing political order across Latin America — from Venezuela to Cuba to Mexico.Lastly, Miguel and Alexander discuss the contradictions of being a politically conscious Fútbol fan: rooting hard for El Tri while critiquing the mega-event capitalist FIFA machine hosted in the imperial core. Or, worse, have you thrown up your hands in disgust and opted for the couch? Join an empowering conversation on "How to be a strategic political donor," where you will learn that you have agency and can make a difference in determining the future of our Democracy. Based on her decades-long journey in this arena, U.S. Ambassador (ret) Suzi LeVine will paint the landscape of the political ecosystem and decode their acronyms; provide a roadmap with key elections and milestones between now and 2032; and share specific ideas on how to build your political investment portfolio so you can maximize your precious 4Ts – your Treasure, Time, Talent, and Team. She wants participants to go from being tactical, opportunistic, and worried to being strategic, effective, and determined (from worried to warrior). Her goal is for you to leave feeling empowered, engaged, and equipped to jump in and to get others you know off the couch and onto the field. Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast: 1) The US believes it’s close to an agreement with Iran to end the near 10-week war, Axios reported, as China added its voice to global diplomatic pressure to wrap up the conflict. Washington and Tehran are working on a one-page memorandum of understanding that would set a framework for more detailed nuclear negotiations, Axios said Wednesday, citing two US officials and two other sources it didn’t identify. Nothing has been agreed yet, the news agency added, and the US expects Iranian responses on several key points in the next 48 hours. Iran hasn’t commented on any progress toward a deal. 2) US President Donald Trump said he would discuss the Iran war with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during their summit next week and sought to downplay tensions over the conflict. “That’ll be one subject, but he’s been very nice about this,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday in response to a question about what he hoped to achieve with Xi on Iran when they meet. “He’s been very respectful. We haven’t been challenged by China,” the president added, even as he acknowledged that Beijing is a significant importer of Iranian oil — supplies of which have been disrupted by the war. “They don’t challenge us. He wouldn’t do that. I don’t think he’d do that because of me, but I think he’s been very respectful.” The leaders are slated to meet in Beijing on May 14-15, a high-stakes summit that comes as the Iran war brings fresh tumult to the relationship between the world’s two largest economies. The war has already delayed the meeting once, sparking anxiety in financial markets. 3) US Ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder said Washington will implement 25% tariffs on cars and trucks from the European Union “relatively soon” if the bloc doesn’t swiftly ratify a long-delayed trade deal. “Unless we see some substantial progress, I think you probably should expect those relatively soon,” Puzder told Bloomberg Television. US President Donald Trump recently vowed to slap 25% tariffs on European vehicles, accusing the bloc taking too long to ratify the agreement, which was initially reached last July. The EU, meanwhile, is frustrated over several Trump moves it argues undermine Washington’s commitments under the pact.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After studying law under Thomas Jefferson, he later served in the Virginia House of Delegates, as the US Ambassador to France and England, as governor of Virginia, as the Secretary of War and then Secretary of State. Finally, in March 1817, James Monroe became our country's 5th President and in 1823 he famously introduced the Monroe Doctrine. Quite a legacy for a teenager wounded in the Battle of Trenton at just 18 years old. It was a masterclass in the "dark arts" of Number 10, with Emily Thornberry leading a blistering critique of the decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as US Ambassador before his security vetting was even complete. Over the past weeks those watching the Eastern Mediterranean can't help but notice that tensions are heating up between Turkey and Israel as Erdogan's escalatory posture has some wondering what the wider risks are should this current war of words take on new dimensions. Questions range from what this will mean for US efforts to manage an already tense Middle East, to how this will impact Greece, which has developed close ties with Israel over the past decade and a half? Deciding that he needed to chime in, we heard some headscratching remarks from US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, where he dismissed these tensions as “rhetoric”, and added that “Turkey is not a country to be messed with.” These comments drew the criticism of many, including The Wall Street Journal, which accused Ambassador Barrack of undermining US policy and interests. Sinan Ciddi, Henri Barkey, and Vassilis Nedos join Thanos Davelis as we look into this escalating war of words in the Eastern Mediterranean between Turkey and Israel, break down how US Ambassador Tom Barrack is effectively pursuing his own Middle East policy that's undermining US interests, and discuss the wider impact of these developments for Greece. This week we're also putting the spotlight on a founding member of HALC, Bill Matsikoudis, in our latest “I am HALC” segment. A successful attorney and founding partner of Matsikoudis & Fanciullo, Bill's career has also seen him work in the Administration of New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey, for Jersey City where he made headlines suing Fortune 500 companies guilty of polluting, and on Governor Mikie Sherrill's transition team for housing. A little more info on our guests: Sinan Ciddi is a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and director of its Turkey program. On the eve of talks in Washington between leaders in Lebanon and Israel, Beirut has signaled a push to extend the 10-day, U.S.-mediated ceasefire set to expire this Sunday. The ongoing conflict with Iran has put its proxies' regional struggles into the limelight, as flashpoints continue to emerge, Lebanon chief among them. As a platform for Hezbollah, Lebanon is in a unique political position, balancing an adversary at home while aligning itself more closely with the West amid regional confrontation. Donald Trump has a historic opportunity to rid the Middle East of the Iranian regime if he is willing to commit to the persistence and patience needed to see this operation through. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. US President Donald Trump unexpectedly announces an extension of the truce with Iran hours before the April 22 deadline, reports Magid, adding that the president's recent spate of muddled messaging hasn't helped matters. Magid notes that a divide within the Iranian leadership is slowing decision-making, as it continues to play hardball. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee heads to the US for a second round of Israel-Lebanon talks that appear to have some momentum, says Magid, but will require the ability of the Lebanese government to crack down on Hezbollah if any real progress is to be made. Magid notes that the April 11 deadline set by the Board of Peace for Hamas to respond to the disarmament deal has passed. Hamas doesn't want to be blamed for the collapse of talks, says Magid, but the Board of Peace is still aiming for a phased disarmament. Finally, Magid reports on another deadly incident in the central West Bank village in which two Palestinians were killed, allegedly shot by an IDF reservist from the Hagmar regional defense unit. This week: the Mandelson row deepens – and a bigger question about Keir Starmer's judgment and authority. After a bruising appearance from Olly Robbins at the Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael and Madeline ask whether the Prime Minister's defence still holds and assess the weaknesses this whole debacle has exposed in Keir Starmer. For example, why did he want Mandelson to be US Ambassador in the first place, given the numerous red flags and the fact that – as Michael suggests – he doesn't particularly like Mandelson or his style of operating? They also discuss whether this will end up being a resigning issue – and, if Starmer does go, what comes next? With potential successors circling and the local elections looming, would removing him would solve the problem or make it worse?Produced by Oscar Edmondson. Hosted on Acast. AP correspondent Jill Lawless reports the U.K.'s prime minister is facing growing political pressure over his appointment as ambassador to the U.S.
Britain's Prime Minister is accusing officials of withholding information from him before he appointed Peter Mandelson US ambassador. Sir Keir Starmer sacked Mandelson in September last year over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Starmer says officials deliberately didn't tell him Mandelson has failed security vetting, and he wouldn't have cleared Mandelson to the role if he'd known. UK Correspondent Rod Liddle told Mike Hosking neither the arguments of the Government nor those of then-Foreign Office boss Sir Olly Robbins make sense. He says the situation is catastrophic. Senator Lisa Murkowski and Governor Mike Dunleavy gave featured remarks during luncheons on Thursday and Friday that added important leadership insights about the current state of affairs as well as the importance of maintaining alliances among all of the Arctic Nations. This year's challenges in the Arctic felt like a 'Summit' since the tensions, war in Iran and a disrupted world order have greatly impacted the trust between long time allies and alliances. The moderators that played a key role in the intensive discussions held over the three days were Mike Sfraga and Libby Casey, both being as seasoned as they come. Sfraga, a former US Ambassador for Arctic Affairs, and Casey of NPR and former Washington Post and Alaska Public Media, tactfully led panels of leaders, scientists, politicians, and Indigenous leaders thru fascinating and sometimes difficult topics about the current affairs in the Arctic. Founder and CEO of the Arctic Encounter, Rachel Kallander and her team, Jackson Blackwell, Reed Davidson, and Board of Directors created a welcoming atmosphere at this year's 2026 Arctic Encounter Summit that fostered discussions, collaboration, friendship and renewed bonds for an inclusive exceptional Arctic Policy event. https://www.arcticencounter.comI'd like to thank Rachel Kallander, Jackson Blackwell, Reed Davidson, and their incredible teamwork in putting on this year's Arctic Encounter Summit. The row over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as US Ambassador erupted again this week. Sonia discusses the issues raised over security clearance with Hannah White, Director of The Institute for Government and Caroline Slocock, a former civil servant who was private secretary to Margaret Thatcher and John Major. Sonia discusses the impact on the UK economy of the war in Iran with Labour peer Stewart Wood, who is a former adviser to Gordon Brown and Chair of the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee. And Rupert Harrison, who worked alongside George Osborne at the Treasury, and is now a senior adviser at the investment management company Pimco.Earlier this week, the Prime Minister spoke of closer ties with the EU on food and other goods. To discuss this Sonia is joined by Labour MP Catherine West who is a former Foreign Office Minister and Reform UK MP Danny Kruger. And, last month legislation was finally passed to remove the remaining hereditary peers from the House of Lords. To reflect on their removal Sonia is joined by two hereditary peers: crossbencher Charles Courtenay, the 19th Earl of Devon and the Liberal Democrat Lord Thurso, who is also a former MP.
The Peter Mandelson scandal just got more scandalous. Last night the story broke that Mandeslon actually failed his enhanced vetting before being made US Ambassador. Number 10 are pleading ignorance. Their defence sits on the suggestion that the Foreign Office's most senior official unilaterally decided to ignore the findings and – what's more – that he told no one. It's a stretch and, as Tim Shipman says MPs' 'fury is overwhelming'. There are a number of outstanding questions, including: what could possibly be in it for the FCDO to withhold this key information? Now Sir Olly Robbins has been sacked, will he go public? Did Starmer knowingly mislead parliament when he said that the vetting process was followed? And, considering he found out this information earlier this week, why didn't he correct the record? Tim Shipman and Isabel Hardman join Oscar Edmondson to react to the latest in what is shaping up to be one of the most challenging scandal of the Starmer era.Produced by Oscar Edmondson and Patrick Gibbons.Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. “The fact that we are now the world's largest funder of the World Health Organisation should be a major embarrassment to every country on this planet.”Sam Fenwick speaks to Mark Suzman, CEO of Gates Foundation, the world's largest philanthropic organisation, about why he thinks cuts to global aid spending is costing lives. He says the Foundation has overtaken world governments to become the largest financial backer of the WHO. Last year, the United States scaled back parts of its overseas aid budget. It wasn't the only county to do so, with many governments including the UK, Germany, France and Japan all spending less. For an institution with little democratic accountability, Mark Suzman is asked whether there is too much reliance on the Gates Foundation globally and whether its priorities are the right ones.Thank you to the Business Daily team for its help in making this programme. A foundational principle that distinguished and continues to distinguish our country from most other governments in the world is that our government exists by the "consent of the governed." Why was this idea so paramount to the establishment of our republic, and what is its origin? From Aristotle to Locke, we see the genesis of this idea that was at the core of the American Revolution and continues today. To further expound on principle of "the consent of the governed," we are delighted to welcome the Honorable Bob Pence, former US Ambassador to Finland.

Iran, Patriotism, Fed-Up White Working Class, Fighting Authoritarians, Will He Run for Office? Opening Day and A Little Yankees Red Sox Smack Talk. FDNY vs NYPD Hockey! Independent Americans host Paul Rieckhoff chops it up with Dropkick Murphys fiery and beloved frontman Ken Casey for a high-energy, no-BS conversation about patriotism, protest, and pushing back on authoritarianism at home and abroad. From Red Sox–Yankees trash talk and World Series rings to Ukraine, ICE, Iran and Trump, Ken explains why the band has spent 30 years standing with workers, veterans, cops, firefighters and immigrants—and why staying loud now is a moral obligation, not a branding choice. The Dropkick Murphys are loved and respected worldwide. And if you don't know them already, after this episode, you'll understand why. Ken and Paul dig into how Trump and MAGA captured huge parts of the white working class, how the “algorithm” changed people we thought we knew, and why courage from artists can help millions find the off-ramp from Trumpism without having to become Democrats. Ken breaks down the power of the No Kings protests happening nationwide this weekend, the possibility of a general strike, and what real patriotism looks like when billionaires, racists and would‑be kings are calling the shots. And, if the “No Kings” protests need a new name. They also go deep and keep it real on parenting through dark times, the mental health toll of nonstop crises, the healing power of community at shows and in the streets—and if Ken will ever run for office. Bible Prophecy Under the Microscope-Episode 84 Gary comments on a recent interview that Tucker Carlson had with Carrie Prejean Boller about the nation of Israel. It's also an opportunity to discuss another Tucker interview, one with the US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee.
"Not our war" is the message from America's top allies this week, after President Trump asked them to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. Many NATO allies view his war on Iran as illegal, and, coming from a President who just two months ago was threatening Greenland, the request fell on deaf ears. Meanwhile, America's enemies may see a the situation as an opportunity. As US Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns witnessed Beijing's push for power up close, and he understands the complexity of America's diplomatic relations all too well. He was also US Ambassador to NATO, and he joined Christiane in London. Also on today's show: former Pentagon analyst Wes J. Moment of Clarity - Backstage of Redacted Tonight with Lee Camp
On this episode of Unredacted Tonight, comedian Lee Camp breaks down a heated interview between Tucker Carlson and former Arkansas governor and U.S. ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee. The conversation quickly turns tense as Carlson challenges Huckabee on religion, geopolitics, and the arguments used to justify modern policies in the Middle East. Lee Camp analyzes the exchange, highlighting the contradictions, rhetorical tactics, and the broader political narratives shaping the debate. The show also explores the complex history behind the creation of Israel in 1948, the role of religion in modern geopolitics, and how discussions about national identity, sovereignty, and international law often unfold in political media. Lee Camp dissects key moments from the Carlson–Huckabee interview and examines how different commentators frame questions about Israel, U.S. foreign policy, and the ongoing conflict in the region. In the second half of the episode, Unredacted Tonight shifts focus to rising tensions involving the United States and Iran. Lee Camp explains how global energy markets, the petrodollar system, and international trade routes influence geopolitical strategy. The segment explores how oil markets, global reserve currencies, and economic competition with China shape major foreign policy decisions—topics that rarely get explained in depth on mainstream media. If you're interested in political satire, media analysis, and deeper discussions about global power structures, this episode of Unredacted Tonight with Lee Camp delivers sharp commentary and context you won't hear elsewhere.
