The Numbers Game.As I pen these lines it is too soon to attempt a deep analysis of the Leinster House election. Not all the counts have concluded although there is enough to form general impressions of the outcome. I outline them in no particular order.Christmas in Long Kesh 1976It's three weeks to Christmas. The decorations, inside and outside of the houses and shops. and the Christmas trees in all of their finery are everywhere as we prepare for the festive season. It puts me in mind of another Christmas which was not so jolly but where the spirt of friendship and family rose above the place we were in.Solidarity with the Palestinian PeopleLast Friday – 29 November – was the annual International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. It was a day set aside by the United Nations General Assembly in 1977 to mark the date in 1947 when the United Nations Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II)). The 1977 resolution was intended to encourage UN member states to give the widest support and publicity as an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people. The United Nations designates such days as a means of raising issues of concern and to mobilise political will and resources to address global problems.

A Clare Historian fears the Palestinian people will face annihilation without real and meaningful intervention from the Irish Government. It follows a tree planting ceremony held in conjunction with the East Clare for Palestine group in Tuamgraney Memorial Park over the weekend in solidarity with the people of Gaza. Last night a further 30 innocent civilians lost their lives in the ongoing conflict after an Israeli airstrike struck an all girls school. Event Organiser and Secretary of the East Clare Memorial Group Dr Tomás MacComara says western democracies cannot continue to turn a blind eye to such atrocities.

As peace efforts and proposed solutions abound, it is imperative that we listen to the voices of Palestinians themselves, whose aspirations and grievances have often been overshadowed or misrepresented. Matthew Petti from Reason shares that the latest polling data from the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research offers a rare glimpse into the sentiments and priorities of the Palestinian public, challenging preconceived notions in the news headlines. It is another example that we need to dig deeper and see past the personal agendas to look at the facts. As we do, we might just be able to pave the way for a more just and lasting resolution in the Middle East, one that genuinely addresses the hopes and concerns of all those affected by this enduring conflict.

Episode 320 features Wafa Ghnaim, a Senior Research Fellow at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Curator for the Museum of the Palestinian People and Founder of The Tatreez Institute, alongside Dr. Tanveer Ahmed, a Senior Lecturer in Fashion and Race at Central Saint Martins and also Course Development Lead for MA Fashion and Anthropology at London College of Fashion. “Inherently, just by being Palestinian and by teaching about Palestinian life and history, and including oral history in my work as a foundational aspect of my research, I am threatening these kinds of structures, in and of itself. And so, simply my existence is resisting that colonialism and the normalization of destruction and death of Palestinian bodies.” -Wafa “Translating lots of decolonial thought around the canon and Eurocentrism and what shapes our ideas of art and design is really crucial to understand how we then deconstruct the canon. It's not just a question about changing reading lists or to me, about representation and bringing in more Black and Brown academics into our institutions, although that is part of the equation. I think what we need to do and what I think is the most important role for me is to undue the harms that coloniality has done to our disciplines and within our institutions.” -Tanveer APRIL THEME — COMING TOGETHER TO BUILD A BETTER FASHION FUTURE Decolonizing fashion, intersectionality, identifying the knowledge holders, cultural inheritance and systems change were some of the key themes we explored in this week's episode. We take a look at some of the areas that fashion educators are dismantling when it comes to heteronormative and Eurocentric views on fashion education and design. And how this knowledge can translate from the classroom or across cultural communities into practical ways. Building off of our last episode, we question – what are the biggest challenges we still face and how can we work toward more transformation? We learn from one of our guests that this focus and lens on decolonising fashion where marginalization and othering is built into the foundation, is very different to the offerings of cultural preservation, which holistically exists to share lived experience, pass over craft practice, history, culture and honor the hands and bodies of the people at the center of this. As our guest shares, what else is there if we cannot honor the people preserving culture. Fashion as it exists, still has a ways to go in embracing this at its roots, but our guests give us hope as they move through the world, sharing their wisdom and truth, and teaching us the meaning of how to be good custodians and stewards, so we can uphold this legacy with care and intention and continue to center Indigenous craft, culture and practice. Expanding the debate on UnityA recent report - "Northern Ireland Subvention: Possible Unification Effects" - published by the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) caught the headlines. It contained the startling claim that Irish Unity could cost the South up to €20 billion annually. It was grist to the mill of those who oppose unity. Before the day was out contrary and critical opinions of the report began to emerge with other senior economists criticising it for its failure to acknowledge that a united Ireland will not have responsibility for much of the subvention and that the amounts involved are significantly smaller. Whatever one's view of the merits of the IIEA report it succeeded in creating a debate around the shape of a future economy for the island of Ireland and that is a good thing. It highlighted the absence of any planning by the Irish government and reinforced the call for a Citizens' Assembly to discuss future constitutional arrangements. A group of Chicago writers brought together by the worker/owners of Pilsen Community Books gathered to support and raise resources for our comrades in Atlanta fighting to Stop Cop City. But events ran ahead of us, as they often do, and by the time we gathered, the preannounced genocide against the Palestinian people was in full swing. The connections were clear: militarism and violence abroad, out-of-control militarized police forces at home; land seizures and occupation everywhere; repression and the violent suppression of dissent. We stood up and spoke out—for an immediate ceasefire, for an end to the genocide in Gaza and the murderous violence in the West Bank, for an end to Cop City in Atlanta, for self-determination for the Palestinian people and for an end to US aid to Israel.Rashid Khalidi, The Hundred Years War Against PalestineNathan Thrall, One Day in the Life of Abed SalamaThe One Democratic State Initiative Ta-Nehisi Coates on Israeli ApartheidOn Antisemitism, Anti-Zionism and Dangerous Conflations from Jewish Voice for Peace, and antisemitismcurriculum.org/

Hanan Schlesinger is an Orthodox rabbi and teacher, and a passionate Zionist settler who has been profoundly transformed by his encounters with Palestinians and the Palestinian People beginning in late 2013. The world is witnessing in real time a genuine mass slaughter of humans. Since Hamas's deadly attack on Israel on Oct. 7, a lot has been said about the militant and political group and whether or not they represent the Palestinian people.Hamas has been declared a terrorist group by dozens of countries, including the United States. And many Palestinians in Gaza think the political party is corrupt. The Palestinian Liberation Organization, which controls the West Bank and is led by Mahmoud Abbas, has condemned Hamas's violence. It's been over 15 years since the last parliamentary election that brought Hamas to power, one that many Palestinians weren't old enough to vote in. We discuss how Palestinian leadership and how war and displacement has shaped the lives of Palestinians. Want to support 1A? Give to your local public radio station and subscribe to this podcast.
