Galatians - The Real Gospel - Part 10 Real Life is in a multi-week series through the book of Galatians, Paul's great Epistle (pastoral letter) to the churches near and around Galatia. In 'Part 10' of our series we reenforce that Christianity is not about rule keeping; though people have reduced it to that. It is about Christ. Law based Christianity and religion is a miserable place to live. People who have spent any time at all in a church can see how living a wild and sinful life can be a miserable one. John 8:38 informs us that those who practice sin are slaves to sin. This being a slave to something is where our disappointment and oppression come in. And it's the same with legalism and law based religion. You are given a list of rules from figures in your childhood, maybe from a preacher, and are left to just follow every single on. Anxiety is a constant because you have to live up to every expectation that has ever been given to you. 'Live like this', 'don't go there', 'can't watch that film', etc. The truth is that living for Legalism's sake is miserable. Just as miserable, if not more, than living in blatant sin. It is oppressive and restrictive and shadows a huge blind spot in your life. It's hard to see the reality of your sin when you are living under legalism. It's just the truth. Relationship or Christ based Christianity is all about the person and work of Christ. It's about resting in the fact that He sets us free, He redeems us, He gives grace upon grace. We no longer have to earn this, we just get to love and treasure Jesus. We are freed up to seek Him in His word and through prayer. Galatians - The Real Gospel - Part 9 Real Life is in a multi-week series through the book of Galatians, Paul's great Epistle (pastoral letter) to the churches near and around Galatia. In 'Part 9' of our series we find that Christianity is not about rule keeping; though people have reduced it to that. It's about Christ. The understanding for Christians, then, isn't about what rules there are but who Christ is and how we relate to Him. This is because rule based religion is miserable. It reminds you every time you mess up. There is always pressure in the back of your mind about what you need to do and what you can't do. Christ gave His all to redeem us and we are all now 'sons' (which refers to the ancient legal term for obtaining inheritance). This means that as children of God, male and female, we are made co-heirs with Christ of God's mercy and glory. Heirs with God share the greatest identity and common ground there is: Christ and the Kingdom. The Ground at the Foot of the Cross is Level. Galatians - The Real Gospel - Part 8 Real Life is in a multi-week series through the book of Galatians, Paul's great Epistle (pastoral letter) to the churches near and around Galatia. In 'Part 8' of our series we learn about the function of the Law. What is it? What does it do? What doesn't it do? Many Christians get hung up on the 'rules' of Christianity but don't understand the freedom and love for God that is built in us when we become a Christian. Our greatest need is justification. All of us have gaps in our goodness. We may seem like we are generally good as a person but upon real and honest reflection it becomes obvious that we are selfish people who have a track record of sin and extortion. Since that's the case, justification is our greatest need. The Law acts as a mirror. Following the Law doesn't get us any close to the Father. Following the Law simply shows us how little we are able to follow the good rules and standards of God. If there is a hot surface on the counter and we are told not to touch in, at least once in our life that's the thing we most want to do. The Law is a mirror that shows us that we couldn't ever possibly reach God by being good enough. It shows us the truth that, although we are decent people within society, we are still fundamentally flawed when compared to the perfect of God. The Law shows us our need for a Savior. In fact, the best part about the Law is that Jesus is the whole fulfillment of the Law and attribute to us His Goodness and Righteousness (Propitiation). This is our Great Hope! In 'Part 7' of our series we discuss the Reason, the Reality, and the Result of the Cross. Our greatest need is justification. All of us have gaps in our goodness. We may seem like we are generally good as a person but upon real and honest reflection it becomes obvious that we are selfish people who have a track record of sin and extortion. Since that's the case, justification is our greatest need. In this message we find the pivotal difference that many do not understand; Relying on law and relying on faith are completely different. We can't be perfect to get to God so He must come to us. Jesus assumed the curse that we earned and He gave us His righteousness which He earned by being the perfect Son. In 'Part 5' of our series we begin to understand that the Gospel is not just a truth to Believe once, but it is truth to walk in every day. It is a well of continuous water that is meant to satisfy us at every turn in life. Not something that we believe or profess once but always. Galatians 2:15-21 15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. 17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. Paul was quick to act upon knowing that certain Jews (including the apostle Peter himself) were not acting according to the commonness we share in Christ but thought differences of ethnic traditions. These cultural and ideological differences caused there to be a divide within the church that Jesus never called for. The Gospel calls every man to Jesus. Not just those who look like you. And as Jesus conforms each person into the image of himself, we can start acting like a family; like the church. It doesn't matter the cultural differences, the variety of skin colors.
