D'Geschicht vum Interview ass bal esou laang, wéi den Interview selwer. Als Virbereedung op de Film Love Me Tender vun der Anna Cazenave Cambet an op den Interview mat der Vicky Krieps hat de Jeff Schinker d'Buch vun der Constance Debré, op deem de Film baséiert, aus senger Bibliothéik gekroopt a vergiess, et an d'Valise ze leeën. Zu Cannes huet en d'Buch nach eemol kaf, just fir et um Sonndeg am Kino leien ze loossen, dat, nodeems en eréischt d'Hallschent dovu gelies hat – no 22 Filmer innerhalb vu 5 Deeg een Effet vun der Middegkeet. Am Bichergeschäft zu Cannes louch et net méi, well hie sech et selwer ewech kaf hat, an zwou Librairien zu Antibes war et och net ze fannen, wouwéinst dann de béise mä effikasse Liwwerservice dee mer all kennen huet missen dru gleewen. Den Interview selwer z'organiséieren war änlech schwéier, als éischt krut eise Journalist eng Ofso, duerno eng Waardelëscht fir ee Kollektivinterview mat der internationaler Press, ma quasi a leschter Sekonn ass et em gelong, net just d'Buch fäerdeg ze liesen, ma och ee One on One Interview ze kréien, dank engem immens effikassen a sympatheschen Attaché de presse. Fir eng laang Geschicht kuerz ze halen: Den Interview huet stattfonnt – a wat d'Vicky Krieps iwwert hir Roll an der Verfilmung vu Love Me Tender, hir nei Produktiounsfirma Viktoria Productions an d'Absence vum neien Jim Jarmusch Film op der Croisette ze soen huet – dat lauschtere mer elo.

In this half of the episode, we look at Bergman Island (2021), written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve. It stars Tim Roth and Vicky Krieps as a couple who have come to Faro Island as fans of Ingmar Bergman and want to take the tourist view while they complete their own work in a house they've rented. Like some Bergman films, as the characters move deeper into the story, the line between the audience and the actors begins to dissolve, and we're reminded that we're watching a movie starring these actors-as-characters. It's hard to describe in writing but Bergman fans will understand instantly when they see the film. COMING ATTRACTIONS: Next time around, the directorial inspiration is Howard Hawks, with a couple of fairly recent films: Speed (1994) directed by Jan de Bont, and The Martian (2015), directed by Ridley Scott. For our second round-up reviews of horror films that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, special guest Joe Lipsett and I cover four more horror films. We start with two ghost stories: the frosty New Zealand drama Went Up the Hill, directed by Samuel Van Grinsven and starring Dacre Montgomery and Vicky Krieps; and the rambunctious Taiwanese horror comedy Dead Talents Society, directed by John Hsu and starring Gingle Wang. We also take a look at Scott Beck and Bryan Woods' psychological puzzle box thriller, Heretic, featuring a charmingly sinister Hugh Grant, as well as Joseph Kahn's monster-on-the-loose horror comedy Ick, starring Brandon Routh and Malina Weissman. P.T.August rolls on with the only PTA movie neither host had seen before embarking on this month-long odyssey, a 1950s period piece set in the London fashion world that seems on the outside like a stuffy Oscar drama but packs some hidden humour in its dramatic depths. It's 2017's Phantom Thread, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps and Lesley Manville. While most folks would might work their way through a filmography in chronological order, we've fallen into an accidental cosmic alignment as this feels more in line with The Master than almost any other movie Anderson has made, boasting another terrific Jonny Greenwood score. Plus: Hayley's fired up to welcome her little niece into the world, while J Mo's got a theatrical field report on Deadpool & Wolverine. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Phantom Thread is currently streaming on Amazon Prime at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include The Hangover, The O.C., Deadpool 2, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men, X-2: X-Men United, X-Men: First Class, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Alias, Maestro, The Crown and Old. We'll be back next week with returning favourite Matt Pollock as P.T.August continues with a much more youthful and funny film: 2021's Licorice Pizza, starring Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman, which can currently be found streaming on Crave and the Criterion Channel. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Our newest contributor Paul rejoins the podcast as Max and Brian revisit their series pairing off the films of Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson. We've skipped ahead a bit to land on their 70mm roadshow pictures, each auteur using their clout to shoot on film, on location. In doing so they crafted two of their most personal movies, with wildly varied results. Give us a listen as we continue to pit these two geniuses against each other!Say Hi!

REBROADCAST FROM May 31, 2024] Viggo Mortensen joins us to discuss writing, directing, and starring in the new Western romance, "The Dead Don't Hurt," about a couple relearning each other after the wife's husband returns from the Civil War. Mortensen is joined by actor Vicky Krieps, who plays Vivienne in the film. This segment is guest-hosted by Kousha Navidar
This week, it's the first week of P.T.August as we're set to spend the next five Fridays indulging in the works of Paul Thomas Anderson, beginning with a Blu-ray J Mo's been carting around for 11 years now without having ever actually watched before now. It's 2012's The Master, written and directed by P.T. Anderson, and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Rami Malek, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, Ambyr Childers and Kevin J. O'Connor. Watching it now, it feels like PTA was a good four years ahead of the culture in exploring the dynamics of cults, how they operate and why people get sucked in to them -- a subject on which there are now countless documentary series, but must have felt cutting edge in 2012. Loaded with visual flair and anchored by a trio of tremendous lead performances, it's Anderson's own personal favourite of his films. Will our hosts agree? Plus: Hayley's still boiling over the cut kiss from the end of Twisters. If you'd like to watch the film along with us this week, The Master can be found streaming in Canada on Amazon Prime, Hoopla and the Criterion Channel at the time of publication, the latter of which is also celebrating P.T.August with an August collection of Anderson's work. Other works discussed in this episode include The Fabelmans, Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Species, Species II, Under The Skin, Evil, Plane, There Will Be Blood, Arrival, Night Bitch, Nocturnal Animals, Ren Faire, Fight Club and many more. P.T.August continues next week as we get back at it with an unseen film-on-disc from Hayley's collection, as we watch Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps in 2017's Phantom Thread, also available to stream at the moment on Amazon Prime. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

In this episode of Girls On Film, Anna Smith highlights some feminist favourites from Sundance London Film Festival. She catches up with director Shuchi Talati, whose debut feature Girls Will Be Girls follows headgirl Mira (Preeti Panigrahi) as she strives to get As in the classroom and the bedroom, and struggles with a third-wheeling mother (Kani Kusruti). Anna is joined by Shuchi as well as lead actress Preeti Panigrahi as they reflect on women's filmmaking in India, reveal how they tackled intimacy on set together, and share Shuchi's initiative Undercurrent, a scheme to train women to work in the lighting department on film sets in India. Next up, Anna hears from the singer turned actress Maisy Stella, who stars opposite Aubrey Plaza in Megan Park's My Old Ass. The pair chat about what attracted Maisy to the role of 18 year old Elliott, who meets her 39 year old self while tripping on magic mushrooms and has to deal with the consequences of knowing how her teenage decisions will impact her later life. Maisy recalls the refreshing nature of Park's script, which portrays a queer lead without feeling tokenistic or trite. Finally, Anna chats to Vicky Krieps about starring in Viggo Mortensen's new feminist western, The Dead Don't Hurt. She talks with Anna about ‘becoming your own department' when your co-star is also the director, and Viggo speaks about the inspiration behind the character of Vivienne. Vicky also dispels some of the myths of progress in the film industry, while acknowledging the importance of portraying women like Vivienne in The Dead Don't Hurt in order to move towards a more feminist cinema, but also a more feminist film set. "The Dead Don't Hurt" had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received decent reviews for its direction by Academy Award-nominee Viggo Mortensen, his score, and the performances from him and Vicky Krieps. An emotionally sweeping romance set against the backdrop of the old West, Mortensen and Krieps were both kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their views on the material, working alongside each other, and more. What a week for movies! Megan and Dave watched writer/director/composer/co-star Viggo Mortensen's THE DEAD DON'T HURT (2:30), a bittersweet drama set in the 1860s. Viggo (the only actor Dave permits being called by first name, because it's fun to say “Viggo”) is Olsen, a Dane, and Vicky Krieps is Vivienne, a French-Canadian, who meet in San Francisco, fall in love, and make a life together in a tiny Nevada town. TDDH is Vivienne's movie, as it traces her tough, tender, and resilient character from childhood to adulthood. It's a dense story with lots of twists and turns (and too much to get into in this description) and superior performances by Viggo and especially Krieps, and Megan and Dave loved it. Then Evan, Megan, and Dave talk director D.W. Waterson's BACKSPOT (28:56), a drama about a high school cheerleading team with a cutthroat coach (Evan Rachel Wood) and a squad that will do almost anything to prove themselves. Riley (Devery Jacobs), the squad's backspotter, thirsts for the coach's approval, putting a strain on all of her relationships, especially with her girlfriend, Amanda (Kudakwashe Rutendo), who's also a teammate. We had divergent opinions on this one. And over on Patreon, Ang Lee's THE WEDDING BANQUET won our May poll! If you're a patron, you can listen here (and if you're not a patron, you can become one!).
Escuchar audio

Another missive from the Glasgow Film Festival. On this one, we chat with the mighty Viggo Mortensen. Yes, Aragorn himself! The Lord of the Rings and A History of Violence star was in town for the UK premiere of The Dead Don't Hurt, a sinewy western that Mortensen wrote, directed, composed the music for and starred in. Set in the 1860s in a small Nevada outpost, The Dead Don't Hurt is both a beautiful homage to the great westerns of the past and a subversion of this most macho of film genres. It centres on the romance between Mortensen's character Olsen, a Danish carpenter, and Vivienne, a fiercely independent French-Canadian woman who grew up dreaming of being Joan of Arc, played by Vicky Krieps. Mortensen and Krieps are an acting match made in heaven. They're ably supported by a cast that includes Danny Huston, Garret Dillahunt, and the young Scottish actor Solly McLeod, who plays a brutish psychopath who will change Vivianne and Olsen's lives forever. The day after The Dead Don't Hurt's UK Premiere, we sat down with Viggo Mortensen and his young co-star Solly McLeod to discuss the film.
Kelsi and Trey recorded a 3 hour exploration of Paul Thomas Anderson's masterpiece 'Phantom Thread' starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps. They discuss how the film is revered as a meditation on the cost of romance, a deconstruction of the tortured great man myth, and how Anderson subverts our genre expectations with suggestions of a post-war through line with subtle themes of anti-semitism, homophobia, and class constraints. The guys debate America's fascination with character acting. We respond to Ira Sach's comment on our last pod! Oh, and we discuss Phantom Thread in depth, and the differences in acting style between Daniel Day Lewis and Vicky Krieps. Also... The stylistic differences in what Ryan and David look for in performances. And the most revealing topic of discussion...how would we each go about playing a medieval queen who believes she's ordained by god for the throne? We debate. Then we get into what we're working on right now as actors, all things happening at Adult Film, and David's play. Before we end we talk about figuring out our dynamic on the pod and what we actually want out of this career.... and this life. Okay bye. 1:00 Ira sachs listed to our pod/responding to his comment 3:35 Transformational acting discussion begins 8:00 Meryl Streep and Daniel Day lewis (Very contentious
This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a special conversation from our recent sneak preview screening of Corsage with director Marie Kreutzer and lead Vicky Krieps. In a perceptive, nuanced performance, Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread) quietly dominates the screen as Empress Elizabeth of Austria, who begins to see her life of royal privilege as a prison as she reaches her fortieth birthday. Marie Kreutzer boldly imagines Elizabeth's cloistered, late-19th-century world within the Austro-Hungarian Empire with both austere realism and fanciful anachronism, while staying true and intensely close to the woman's private melancholy and political struggle amidst a crumbling, combative marriage and escalating scrutiny. Star and director have together created a remarkable vision of a strong-willed political figure whose emergence from a veiled, corseted existence stands for a Europe on the cusp of major, irrevocable transformation. Corsage, an official selection of the 60th New York Film Festival, is now playing in our theaters. Get showtimes and tickets at filmlinc.org/corsage

Marie Kreutzer is one of Austria's most important and established filmmakers. Her new movie, Corsage, probes the inner life of Empress Elizabeth of Austria-Hungary, an iconic figure in 19th-century history. She's been represented many times on screen, most recently in a Netflix series called "The Empress." Opening this month, Corsage has already garnered enthusiastic reviews and earned a Best Actress Award for its star, Vicky Krieps, at Cannes. Eleanor Wachtel spoke to Marie Kreutzer when the film screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last September.

Despite its relative financial success and reviews that are more "mixed" than bad, M. Night Shyamalan has become such a FH all-star, that we had to check out Old: The Beach that Olds People.
